Episode 113 Being well with Lauren Life source breathing a simple exercise in happiness Hello, Lauren here. I am a mum of four incredibly awesome, amazing children including twins. I am a passionate blogger, podcaster, writer, personal trainer, and You Tuber. My podcast is about spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being. Welcome to my podcast Today I read from my book 'Daily Rituals For Happiness' a simple exercise I call 'life source breathing.... "This idea of space is a really important to me because for much of my life, I simply did not allow myself any room for happiness. I was too busy rushing around, keeping fit for my next triathlon, trying to find or keep a relationship, seeking approval from others, gaining another qualification, holding onto the past, and worrying obsessively about the future. Does this sound like you? So many of us have lives like this. We are busy, distracted and bouncing around without any true focus or clarity. We keep looking towards a brighter future that never seems to arrive, rather than experiencing happiness in the now. We allow ourselves to be drawn into other people's stories. We ruminate, we obsess and we overthink our lives. On top of that, will fill our physical environment with all kinds of possessions. We fill our bodies with junk. We try to cram so much into every single day that our lives end up being overcrowded. It is no wonder we lack the space to be happy. Space can be defined as being a continuous area or expanse which is free and available. Just think about those words 'free' and 'available' for a moment. What do they mean to you? How do you feel when you say them out loud? What images appear in your mind? For me, I imagine feeling free to love, free to run, free to be myself, and free to be available to possibility and opportunity. I visualise myself walking along the beach, holding hands with a friend, playing with my children, or laughing with friends. I also imagine a spacious room with natural light streaming in as I meditate in contentment. You might like to write about your responses to these words or draw images of them in your journal. Ask yourself if you have a sense of freedom and availability in your life. Often we end up being distracted and cluttered by habits, objects, people and places that take us away from ourselves and our happiness. So how do we get this back? How do we get back to our true selves? When we create space, it is like pruning back an overgrown tree and seeing the sun shine through the branches. When we clear away the physical and emotional clutter in our lives, we are making room to focus upon one sensation at a time. We allow ourselves the calmness and clarity to practice the art of noticing and to become fully aware of ourselves and our surroundings. We also rediscover what really matters to us and can begin to see who we really are. As I went through the process of grieving after my marriage ended, there were several stages when I needed to create space in order to heal and be happy. I kept so much stuff from my marriage. I had in a treasured box every card and letter my ex-husband ever sent me, along with gifts and other things which reminded me of my married life. And yes, at times I would look inside this box and reminisce. Sometimes it is positive to hold on to memories, but in this situation, all this stuff was taking up space and keeping me stuck in the past. It was cluttering up my mind and stopping me from moving on. On one occasion, one of my friends pointed in frustration at a wedding picture still displayed on the kitchen buffet and said, "For heaven's sake, get that dinosaur out!" After a while, my girlfriends began coming over to my house and to help me declutter. With their assistance, I cleared out the house and let go of the things I no longer needed. The funny thing was that as much as I felt better when I decluttered and gave things away, it was still hard for me to let go. I think this is because we sometimes allow our emotional baggage to define us so much that we almost become attached to it. I think that's what it was like for me. Life-source breathing exercise This is a pranayamic inspired breathing exercise to help you create the space to be in the moment. I find pranayamic breathing to be incredibly healing in my own journey, especially when I feel overwhelmed or a lack of balance. Prana is a Sanskrit (ancient language of India) word for 'life force', and yama means 'to control'. Pranayama therefore means regulating the breath or respiration. The way we do this is through the formal practice of exercises that control the breath in order that we may feel aware, in the present moment, and vital. Prana or life force enters the body through the action of breathing. Likewise, breath is life – not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Episode 110 of podcast Being well with Lauren True strength comes NOT from fighting or flighting BUT from sitting in the silence As a single Mum, age 51, with four kids, life can be challenging. One of the challenges I continue to face is the precarious ever-changing balance between mothering and maintaining my sense of self. How do you keep a sense of calm in the mayhem of your life? It is Sunday morning. I have just got back from basketball practice, and I have tried( emphasis on the word tried) to clean the house. I have picked up banana peels and apple cores. I have cleaned out the garage. I have washed dishes, put a wash on, Put washing away, cooked food for the next three days( I hope the food lasts that long)cleaned the kitchen, vacuumed and somehow the house still looks pretty terrible. Yes, my life with four kids life can be quite challenging. One of the issues which keep coming back to test me is how to be a Mum( I love being a Mum) without it becoming my only label. After all, Mothering is one of the labels I wear among of so many labels. I am not one story I am many stories. Sometimes in life parenting can tend to dominate our sense of self and like a tsunami drown out everything else. Thats why It is important to find ways to always maintain a sense of self, but this is easier than it sounds. How do you so it? How do you define the balance? How to plan around the mayhem of life without placing yourself under too much pressure? And let's face it Panic just doesn't help but staying calm in the chaos of life is hard work. My gratitude for my four beautiful children is one amazing story in my life. However, four beautiful children also bring with it many stories; stories which need to be heard each day. So, without further ado let's have a lovely chat about how to be happy every single day...It has been a few days since we have spoken...too long...too long I feel...I start with a quote today from one of my favourites Leo Tolstoy 'If you want to be happy be" Isn't that lovely? This quote really says so much doesn't ? It is so simple yet there is so much meaning behind these words. Today I talk about current happiness theories. What I found and what I regularly continue to find when combing the internet is that some blogs have pictures of beautiful young people and these people are smiling by a luxurious pool with a tropical backdrop....with the appearance of wealth suggesting that these elements automatically bring happiness. Yes perhaps these elements of youth, wealth, and beauty may help happiness...to be young beautiful with a healthy smoothie in the hand by a scenic outlook may indeed help our state of mind BUT sustainable is so much more than beauty, bliss, and the perfect circumstances. And to believe that these elusive elements come hand in hand with happiness is simply not true and quite misleading. Happiness is not a byproduct of being young, beautiful with wealth. We all have the right to happiness at any age, regardless of aesthetics, and without depending simply on money. What I think is that happiness is a practice. Just like golf, piano and maths times tables requires a devopment of skill so does the learning of how to feel happy. Today I refer to chapter one in my book "Daily Rituals For Happiness". We need to cognitively learn to feel and practice feeling happy every day. Wouldn't life just be a game of russian roulette if our happiness was simply dependent upon such transient states as beauty, wealth and bliss? How are you feeling?...I mean how are you really feeling at this moment? It is the morning here and people are busily going to work, driving this way and that, harem scarem, and I have just dropped off the kids at school( the boys that is..the girls are SUPPOSED to catch the bus). It is very busy in the streets around my home. There are dogs barking and there is a lot of life happening here....a lot of morning noise. Do you have a lot of noise in your life? Do you have a lot of responsibilities? Do you ever feel like you are drowning under the weight of life without any time to simply feel happy? Well I think that we can do both, we can find a sense of balance and still feel happy. I want you to take a moment to really consider how you are right now...stop what you are doing( safely) and take a moment to be in the present. How are you feeling right now? This morning I woke up to the noise of my girls( teenage girls mind you) arguing about losing shoes....they were screaming....'I can't find my shoes'...they were late for the school bus...( not uncommon I am sorry to add)aah the juggle of life. On this occasion, I hid my head under the covers and imagined myself as a clown juggling balls and trying to keep them in the air. So how do you feel? Now notice your dominant feelings like waves in the ocean and then notice the quieter grains of sand beneath. What feelings forms those grains? The grains are like all those good feelings we have surrounding a dominant emotion which sweeps in at times. Is it the nice cup of tea that you are currently drinking, the comfy chair, or the green plants by your window? Feelings are never simple, there are always layers and ultimately we decide how we feel. Being happy takes practice...lots of practice. Today I talk about 'how to feel happy' while maintaining the juggle of life. Enjoy. Episode 96 - Being well with Lauren
Episode 96 - An awareness exercise to increase happiness & reduce stress Today we are going to do a fun exercise in awareness to help you feel happier every single day...Would you like to try that? Now this is a really simple exercise you can do at any time to help your mind learn to focus, deliberate, and essentially think more clearly ...so it is really super useful and has a range of benefits. I ask you at the beginning of this episode to bring an item or a thing which gives you comfort. We use this for the awareness practice. And yes by practice I mean this is an exercise you repeat regularly. I recommend daily. The more you practice the better you get at it. And the more you practice the happier you get. Sound good doesn't it? Now with your chosen item in your hand I want you to explore, enjoy, and immerse yourself in that item. Today I use a cup of tea( Because I just love tea and find it comforting). Throughout the episode today we notice our chosen item, we touch it, listen to it, look at it...possibly taste it. This exercise is all about really sitting in the present moment enjoying, appreciating, and focusing on what we have right in front of us. In this way we teach our minds to focus deliberately on what we have in this present moment rather than being distracted, ruminating, over thinking or wandering away from the moment. As we do bicep curls in order to increase our bicep strength, or we may run in order to increase our cardio fitness so we do happiness exercises in order to teach our brain to feel familiar with happiness. In other words we train our happiness muscle. So the feeling of happiness becomes more of a 'go- to' emotion for our brain rather than the emotions of anxiety or negative stress. A trained brain is also more resilient and able to think more clearly which helps with problem solving and stress. So go and get yourself an item which brings you comfort and resonates with who you are and come back and sit down and let's do a simple exercise to train our happiness muscle. Episode 95 Are you just being too nice? Hi everyone Lauren here... How have you been? I have a lovely cup of English Breakfast tea here and I am looking forward to having a nice chat with you. Today I respond to a business letter addressing self-esteem, negative self-talk, internal dialogue, and maintaining a sense of self. Interspersed with these interesting topics we look at setting boundaries. Ah What a lovely mix! So seat yourself down -pour yourself a hot cuppa and let's get chatting. Here is the letter I'm responding to... What would you say if you respond to this letter? And...What would you say if I asked you to respond to this letter? Why don't you respond below? "Well I've had some problems at work. I've started a new job and there's some girls there who are talking bad about me and I usually don't have low self esteem I usually feel pretty good about myself. But I'm starting to feel like a weakling, I feel like I can't stand up for my self in a positive way. I feel like I'm losing my self in a sense like I'm just letting what those people say effect me in a bad way. I want to be strong like proud of myself and it's not only them I feel like my friends even sometimes take advantage of me. I'm "too nice" I guess I should say so when I say I want to be my own hero I just want to know how to get my courage to say "No" or " I don't like that" I feel like I've lost my voice in what I want or don't want in my life because I'm being too gentle and too nice. I would just like some motivation on how to stand up for myself, be positive, and strong like I think a hero would be. Kind of like a super hero. Episode 94 Using a 'reflections wheel' to learn to feel happiness Hello there, Lauren here...How have you been? Are you well? Have you been exercising? Are you sleeping? Are you taking care of yourself?I do hope so... ...And now a question for you...How have you been reflecting? Yes that's right...How have you been REFLECTING..in other words how have you been perceiving the experiences of your life? Because your ability to reflect is not only a skill but it helps determine your happiness. Yes that's right HOW WE REFLECT HELPS US TO LEARN TO FEEL HAPPY.This is a really important topic......I have my cup of tea in already in hand ...Go and get yourself a nice hot cuppa and let's get going..But be warned you will need to Roll up your sleeves....and let's do some work on our happiness practice...today I have my diary in hand and have taken some notes... we all want to feel happy and feel a sense of well being don't we?...is that what you want? Do you want to feel good? Do you want to feel happy every day? What do you want from your life? How do you want to feel? Reflections are really important...our cognitive ability to reflect determines how we learn to feel now in the present moment and leads us to how we will feel about the future. And one day you will want to look back on your life. I am not ancient I am only 51 but as my dear son says to me "Mum you have only lived half your life"...I wish! Bless him. Our mind is like a horse and we are the riders...we choose whether to use the reins or allow our horse to gallop wantonly without direction or guidance...Is your horse of life all galloping all over the place? We do choose our thoughts. We choose what thoughts to associate with an event in our life. We choose our feelings. We choose our values. And these choices help determine our journey of life. In today's podcast I talk about making yourself a 'Reflections wheel' in order to help you learn how to feel happy. I saw a 'reflections wheel on the hall wall while I was watching my boys play basketball at a local school yesterday. It was a learning tool used by the school and displayed up on the wall to help children learn to feel more resilient, happier, and open to learning. And I thought why don't we do one today together during the podcast episode. So today we discuss the Reflections wheel and how our way of reflecting upon our lives determines our ability to sit in the present and also shapes the person we become in the future. Today I talk about how we choose how to internalise sounds. The amazing composer John Cage who composed 4.33 says "If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all." ― John Cage. Sound by itself is merely sound we choose what meaning to give it. Episode 76 Being well with Lauren
Hi every one, I hope that you are well. Do you ever have a moment of self realisation? Sometimes we have moments in our life during which we have an epiphany. In the last couple of days I realised I truly realised that when we wish for something we do not have in the present moment we are essentially stealing time from our authentic self and giving this to our egoic self. When we look towards the future rather sit in the present we lose the amazing opportunity to live. And when we wish for tomorrow or next week or next year we steal today and the following days from ourselves. It is so important to walk in each step to breathe in each breath and to notice each sunset. Do you sit in the present? Do you experience each amazing moment that life presents us with? Or do you look back in time or wish forward in time? It's challenging isn't? To truly sit in the present takes dedication and practice. But it's so worth it. What thoughts are you having during stress? Do you ever wonder how much your thoughts have to do with your stress? Today we look at journalling in order to reduce stress. We Look at negative thought patterns and mapping out how are our thoughts contribute to stress. We look at where are mind is pointing and what control we have over this. We Look at being in the moment and we also look at ruminating and how overthinking thinking can contribute to distress. We also look at the difference between distress and eustress. Yes some stress can be good for us. Its hard to believe isnt?
