Dr. Spinella - University of Pittsburgh Trauma Study
Dr. Phil Spinella was a guest on the Rick Dayton Show Thursday afternoon. He is a professor at the Pitt School of Medicine and is co-principal investigator of a new clinical trial that tackles the leading cause of death in children: traumatic bleeding. The study is funded through a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services and has a budget of $34 million for the first five years. That budget could expand to $81 million over ten years. Among the things they will study is whether whole blood is better than transfusions of individual blood parts like red cells, platelets and plasma.

The family of Ian Brunner has started an endowed scholarship at The University of Dayton to honor the memory of their son, a UD graduate back in May. Ian graduated in May with a degree in mechanical engineering, but died a few hours after graduation in an accident while repairing his car. Ian's family wants others to be able to attend the University of Dayton while remembering his love for engineering and for people.

What is Camp Cadet?
Allegheny County Deputy Sheriff Jason Tarap was not at work last week. He was working with 43 kids who are 12 to 14 years old at Camp Cadet. In the past 18 years, nearly a thousand young people have graduated from Allegheny County Camp Cadet. It puts the kids through a week-long camp that mirrors what police officers go through at the Police Academy. Tarap was a guest on the Rick Dayton Show Monday to talk about how the kids change in seven days away from home -- and how they adjust to not having any electronics for the entire week.
