Paula Reed Ward - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Robert Bowers, the suspect in the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting must undergo psychiatric evaluations. That was the opinion of U.S. District Judge Robert Colville. Paula Reed Ward is covering the Bowers trial for the Tribune-Review. She tells Rick Dayton the judge was very specific in his instructions to the prosecution and defense as to what his expectations are for the evaluations, how long they should take and made it clear they are not to interfere with the timeline for the next phase for the trial.

"This is a monumental day for breast health," said Dr. Matt Miller, a guest on the Rick Dayton Show Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now recommends women should get screened for breast cancer every other year starting at age 40 instead of 50. Dr. Miller is a radiologist and breast imaging specialist with Allegheny Health Network.

Dr. Raymond Pontzer
Late last week, the US Food & Drug Administration gave preliminary approval for a vaccine for RSV. It is for people over the age of 60. Dr. Raymond Pontzer, MD is a infectious disease doctor at UPMC. He says 60,00 to 100,000 adults are hospitalized each year and as many as 10,000 older Americans die each year from the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV.) However, Dr. Pontzer told Rick Dayton there is good news on the horizon as it relates to protection for infants from RSV.

Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw tells Rick Dayton the company has already spent $31 million on the clean-up effort in East Palestine. They announced to investors in a recent earnings call they are setting aside $385 million more to rectify the derailment in eastern Ohio. Shaw said the company will do whatever it takes to help the community. Three long-term funds have been established to address these issues. Shaw reaffirmed the safety of rail traffic, but said he personally wants to lead the way to improve safety standards in the United States so something like this does not happen again.

The Passing of a Legendary Basketball Coach
One of the greatest basketball coaches in Western PA has passed away. Rudy Marisa led the greatest era of basketball at Waynesburg University so much so they named the field house in his honor. WGA Strike Begins
More than 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America walked off the job this morning. They are on strike for the second time in 15 years. This time, they say their wages are lagging, there are fewer people in the TV writing rooms, and the determination of how to calculate residual income for syndication is out of date. Matt Pelphrey was a screenwriter for MTV's "Skins" and now works as a professor at Point Park University teaching screenwriting. Pelfrey was a guest on the Rick Dayton Show. He said the line between network television and streaming "is gone. That's why the strike is happening."

A New Biden Policy Has Outraged State Treasures
Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity penned a letter to President Joe Biden and FHFA Director Sandra Thompson saying "It is already clear that this new policy will be a disaster." Garrity is referring to a decision by the Biden Administration and the Federal Housing Authority to charge highly-qualified mortgage borrowers extra fees to pay for those borrowers who have lower credit scores. Treasurer Garrity added, "It amounts to a middle-class tax hike that will unfairly cost American families millions upon millions of dollars. And – at a time when the real estate market has already slowed considerably due to high interest rates – it will further depress home sales." Millions of non commutative autistic people face challenges everyday with no real way of breaking through their wealth of knowledge to the world. A recent documentary Spellers, that won Best Documentary Award at the Phoenix Film Festival, examines a new way of communicating with non communitive autistic people. Melinda Kutzer, a Pittsburgh mother of a 26-year-old non commutative autistic son, went to a meeting about a new to communicate with her son. She went expecting nothing only for her to leave in tears of joy. Helping Ukrainian Children
The Pittsburgh Ukraine Relief Coalition was founded in March 2022. Since then, they have raised more than $100,000 to provide assistance in Ukraine. Now they are working on a fundraising campaign to purchase a playground for special needs children in the western Ukrainian city of Buchach. The town has provided the land and will install and maintain the equipment. Matt Blackburn is the president of the Pittsburgh Ukranian Relief Coalition, and Tetiana Borysenko is a Ukrainian attorney who is doing graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and is volunteering with PURC.
