Dr. Paul Moore DMD
The American Dental Association has come out with new guidelines for opioid prescriptions. Dr. Paul Moore, DMD, PhD, MPH is professor emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He also was a senior author of these new guidelines and panel chair. He joined The Rick Dayton Show to talk about how the use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen in combination with Tylenol often are more effective at managing pain than opioids.

An LPGA Hall of Famer
The newest member of the Board of Directors for Folds of Honor is Nancy Lopez. The LPGA Hall of Famer is legendary for her success on the course, but also for her humanitarian efforts and willingness to help others. She was a guest on The Rick Dayton Show talking about how she met Folds of Honor founder Lt. Col. Dan Rooney. She also explains why she is delighted to help fund scholarships for family members of fallen military and first responders.

Dr. Raagani Jawa - National Policy for Harm Reduction
UPMC's Dr. Raagani Jawa is a clinician and researcher at the University of Pittsburgh. She is trained in addiction medicine and infectious disease. She also is an expert in the area of harm reduction -- and that is part of the reason why she will be participating in a two day public workshop next week to inform the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy on harm reduction research. She says the goal is to advise the federal government on how to create a national policy for harm reduction.

Special Olympics in Pittsburgh
The Special Olympics North America Softball Championship is coming to the Pittsburgh Area in September. Andrew Fee, a Regional Executive Director for Special Olympics Pennsylvania was a guest on The Rick Dayton Show on KDKA to talk about what it means to have a competition of this size come to Pittsburgh.

Helping kids process loss
Julie Thomason is a mom, an Instagram sensation, and a widow. In losing her husband Charles in a car crash, Julie became a single parent. She also decided to become an author of a children's book called "Why Did the Snowman Have to Melt?" She calls the book a parable about grief to help kids who need to process loss. Thomason was a guest on the Rick Dayton Show to talk about the book that was edited by Amanda Fillipelli of Pittsburgh.

How to care for your skin
Are young people too concerned about their skin? Are they doing things that are unhealthy? Are they trying things in their early years that could create problems for them later in life? Dr. Bruce Hermann is a plastic surgeon and has been a frequent guest on the Rick Dayton Show. Dr. Hermann says there are many reasons to be concerned about your skin -- and has some suggestions about the most important things to remember about caring for it. What to do with blighted properties
Westmoreland County is doing something that many other counties are struggling to do: tearing down blighted properties. Since 2022, the Westmoreland County Redevelopment Authority and Land Bank has torn down 104 such properties which is says has countless advantages for the county. Brian Lawrence is the Executive Director of that organization. He joined Rick Dayton on KDKA to talk about what they have done and why it matters to the residents of his county.

Why is there a maternal crisis in the United States?
January 23rd is Maternal Health Awareness Day. Dr. Michael Aziz, a Maternal-Fetal Medical Specialist with Allegheny Health Network, wishes there was no need for such a day. However, he says the United States is in a maternal crisis when it comes to mothers and babies. He says there are many reasons including the opioid epidemic, women waiting longer to have children, and many are ignoring suggestions to get the COVID-19 vaccination as a way to protect themselves and their unborn child.

The cost of unhappy workers
Unhappy workers in the United States are costing American companies nearly $2 trillion a year in lost productivity according to polling from Gallup. It seems that American workers do not feel engaged in their work -- and as a result -- they are doing the bare minimum to keep the job. Dr. Daren Martin, PhD is a best selling business author and consultant who helps companies across the country help their employees feel "engaged." Dr. Martin was a guest on The Rick Dayton Show Tuesday afternoon talking about the challenges to the American economy.

One of the things he says is that packing up your financial documents and taking them to your accountant isn't the only way to do things. He says there are many on-line and pieces of tax software that can handle even the most complex tax filings.

The relationship between cancer recovery and addiction
Doctors have long seen the connection between those who drink, smoke or use drugs and a higher risk of cancer. Yet, adult survivors of certain types of cancer are more likely to struggle with addiction. Dr. Jessica Merlin, MD, PhD at UPMC is the co-author of a new study looking at these issues with collaboration from colleagues at Duke University. Merlin has experience treating cancer patients and those with substance use disorders. She talked about her important research on The Rick Dayton Show.

Duquesne's new College of Medicine
Duquesne University raised the curtain on its brand new College of Medicine this morning. The first class of physicians will report to Pittsburgh this summer to start four years of medical school at Duquesne. Eighty-five students, many from Pennsylvania have been selected from more than 4,000 applicants. Gormley says the addition of a medical school is the largest investment for the University since it launched the Law School in 1911.

A clothing drive in North Versailles
Seed & Harvest Ministries in North Versailles is looking for gently used clothes to help the homeless population of Pittsburgh. Kenya Littrice joined The Rick Dayton Show to explain that they are looking appropriate articles of clothing "that you would wear" for adult men and women. They need coats, blankets, shoes, as well as hygiene items, mouthwash, and toothpaste. Littrice says items can be dropped off at the church in North Versailles or you can call (412) 664-4400 to make arrangements for the items to be picked up.

Brad Rhoads, CEO of GraceMarriage.com joins the Rick Dayton Show for his monthly marriage message. Brad emphasizes that when it comes to being married, love is a verb. It is something you do. It needs to be active. He also says that many people go into a marriage thinking they are going to change the other person rather than concentrating on growing with the other person.
