Surgery vs Weight Loss Drugs
Ozempic and Wegovy have gained a lot of attention in the past year. The diabetes drugs have the added benefit for many to help them lose weight. Dr. Anita Courcoulas is a medical doctor and a Ph.D. She is chief of Minimally Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery at UPMC. She was a guest on The Rick Dayton show after she was the lead researcher on a paper published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study showed that Bariatric Surgery is more effective than medical and lifestyle interventions for diabetes control and emission.

You can understand why Danielle Dallas Roosa is so excited about a private US company landing on the moon Thursday evening. Roosa is the founder of Back to Space, a space entertainment company located in Dallas. Alison Morris with Francey Not Fancy shares her favorite items that you need to have -- but at a price that won't break the bank. She is the founder of the company and says these are things you need, but don't need to spend a ton of money to buy.

A man making art he can't see
At 25, Benny Schwartz was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called NeuroMyelitis Optica, something only 4,000 to 8,000 people have in the United States. That caused Benny to lose his vision. Now at 35, he is legally blind, but he has turned to art as a way to deal with his blindness, mental health and emotional wellbeing. The Pittsburgh-based artists works under the name Benny Blindspots. He just had 50 pieces of his art included in a collection that is being displayed at Bank of America locations across the county.

Teaching the youth about overcoming addiction
Lindsay Olyha says she got involved with drugs and alcohol when she was 12 or 14. By the time she was a sophomore at North Allegheny High School, she got kicked out of school. By the time she was in her early 20's the self-described "troubled youth" had three DUI's and a criminal record -- and the stigma that came along with it. Now, the owner of Scrubd Esthetics and Certified Licensed Nurse Practitioner is going to be the keynote speaker for 300 at North Allegheny HS at a leadership conference for girls. Olyha was a guest on The Rick Dayton Show on KDKA talking about her journey and what she plans to share with the young women.

Local resources for victims of domestic violence
When the Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh opened in 1974, it was one of the first six domestic violence facilities to open in the nation. Now, one in four women and one in seven men are victims of domestic violence. Nicole Molinaro is the CEO/President of the center. She was a guest on KDKA with Rick Dayton to talk about the work they have done in their first 50 years and how they are serving men and women in 2024.

Can you eat TOO much protein?
High protein diets have become very popular for those hoping to bulk up and for those hoping to shed pounds. However, too much dietary protein could trigger a molecular mechanism that could increase the risk of atherosclerosis. The research, conducted by scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was published this week in the journal Nature Metabolism. Dr. Babak Razani, MD, PhD, a cardiologist at Pitt was a guest on the Rick Dayton Show to talk about the research -- and looking ahead to what work still needs to be done as it relates to protein sources (plant vs. animal proteins.)

Ethnic risk factors for stroke
Research released this month at the International Stroke Conference in Phoenix suggests Black women who have high blood pressure before the age of 35 have triple the risk of a stroke. Dr. Rahul Chandra was a guest on KDKA Radio with Rick Dayton talking about the study and why it matters. He points out that there are countless risk factors at play -- and all of them need to be considered by clinicians as they discuss stroke management and prevention with their patients.

The link between stroke and dementia
Researchers in Canada looked at more than 15 million people who live in Ontario. they looked closely at data on nearly 181,000 of those people who had suffered a stroke. That research suggests the odds for dementia nearly triples in the first year after having a stroke. Dr. Russell Cerejo is an Interventional Neurologist at Allegheny Health Network. He joined The Rick Dayton Show on KDKA to talk about the research and what people can do to avoid have a stroke in the first place.

Fighting drug-resistant bacteria
Drug-resistant bacteria has long been a problem for doctors in hospitals around the world. Today, a case study by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine scientists was published in the American Society for Microbiology journal mBio. The senior author on the paper is Dr. Daria Van Tyne. She explained to Rick Dayton how they found success with Phages in combination with antibiotics.

Using scents to fight depression
Smelling a familiar scent may help depressed patients recall specific memories which may potentially assist in their recovery. A paper published in JAMA Network Open features work done by Dr. Kymberly Young, PhD and researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC social workers. The study shows scents are more effective than words in assisting individuals recall specific events. Dr. Young joined Rick Dayton on KDKA to talk about the important research.

Shannon Baker-Mayer is the president of Gatesman, an advertising agency with offices in Pittsburgh and Chicago.
