UPMC Heart Institute Expansion
Get ready for construction in Lawrenceville as UMPC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh announced plans for a Heart Institute Expansion project today. Diane Hupp, the president of UPMC Children's joined Rick Dayton on KDKA Radio to talk about the 50,000 square foot addition at the Lawrenceville hospital. In the past year, more than 600 children have had heart surgery at UPMC Children's Hospital.

Veterans, reservists, National Guard members, and their families have great value -- and many skills -- that make them very attractive to UMPC and the UMPC Health Plan. One of the PA's largest employers is holding a Veteran's Career Fair at Acrisure Stadium on November 9 from 3 to 7 PM. Erik Orient spent 22 years in the US Marine Corps before his career took him to UMPC as their Director of Military Affairs and Student Initiatives. A drug that could prevent Lyme's Disease
Approximately 100,000 cases of Lyme Disease are diagnosed in Pennsylvania each year, the most in the country. Tick-borne illnesses like Lyme's Disease cost the healthcare industry 1 billion dollars each year. Dr. Jill Henning is a professor of Biology at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown. She and a team of researchers at Pitt have received money to develop a tick repellent. Dr. Henning tells Rick Dayton, they are making good progress and could have a product on the market in less than two years.

What are the factors in keeping a job?
Nearly sixty percent of employees say they will be looking for a different job in the next year. Julie Bauke, president of The Bauke Group, is a career counselor. She is not surprised by those numbers because she says loyalty to a company has changed over the years -- as has loyalty to employees. She also tells Rick Dayton many workers realize that money is not the most important factor when considering whether to take -- or keep -- a job.

AJ Jefferson - Willie's Wagon
In southwestern PA, more than 3,100 school-aged kids are homeless and that is a challenge for families, school districts and teachers, too. Enter the Homeless Children's Education Fund and its brand new Winnie's Wagon. The portable classroom will allow the HCEF to go to where the kids are to help bridge the learning loss. It is the only mobile classroom of its type in the country. AJ Jefferson, the CEO of the Homeless Children's Education Fund, was on the Rick Dayton Show talking about how the new tool will help make a difference in children's lives.

Dr. Thomas Kessler is a family practice physician with MedExpress. He is a frequent contributor to The Rick Dayton Show. On Thursday afternoon, he joined the show to talk about how to lessen the chance of something happening that puts a damper on one of the favorite holidays for kids. He addressed issues of physical safety, food safety (1 in 13 kids have food allergy issues,) and contact dermatitis issues from face paint or materials in costumes.

Helping out the Hill
McAuley Ministries, the foundation arm of Pittsburgh Mercy, is donating $2.3 million to 18 non-profit organizations in Pittsburgh. The organizations concentrate their efforts in the Hill District, Uptown Pittsburgh, and West Oakland -- three areas that are very important to Pittsburgh Mercy which was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in those sections of Pittsburgh. Marisol Valentin, the executive director of McAuley Ministries, joined The Rick Dayton Show to talk about the grant money and where it's going and how it will help many people and families around Pittsburgh.

Did you know you can appeal a denial by your insurance company?
Norm Mitry, the CEO/President of Heritage Valley Health System, was a guest on The Rick Dayton Show Tuesday afternoon. He and Rick talked about the number of times insurance companies deny coverage -- and how patients can and should appeal that decision. Mitry says some insurers have a target of denying 40% of all claims. The uncertainty of whether that bill is covered then trickles down to the providers who may or may not get paid

Child Care Centers Unlikely Source for COVID-19 Transmission
Child care centers are not spreading COVID-19 at significant rates to caregivers or other children at the center. That is part of the findings of Dr. Timothy Shope, MD, MPH, a professor of pediatrics at the Pitt School of Medicine and a pediatrician at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The findings from Dr. Shope's team of researchers were published today in JAMA Network Open. Among other things, they found rates of transmission of COVID-19 are much higher at home (50% among children) than they are at child care centers (at only 2% to 3%.)

She says the money will make a huge difference in the fight against overdoses by providing holistic recovery and therapy practices.

Lewie Pugh is the Executive Vice President of the OOIDA, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Foundation. In 25 years behind the wheel of big rigs, Pugh logged more than 2.5 million miles. Today, he was a guest on The Rick Dayton Show talking about how Pennsylvania mirrored California legislation relating to the environmental restrictions placed on truckers.
