189: Ted Ryce: How To Get Bigger With Time Under Tension Training

Focus on the time and tension components of your exercise technique for huge size and strength gains. "Your Muscles Don't Count But They Can Tell Time." This is something I say to my clients a lot to help them understand that while counting reps is important, it's how much time to take to do each rep that counts. Don't believe me? Excellent. I want you to do the same thing that I have all my clients do when they don't immediately buy into this idea. I want you to do two sets of 10 reps of push ups. On first set, I want you to perform those 10 reps taking 2 seconds to lower and 2 seconds to push back up. On the second set, I want you to take 5 seconds to lower and 5 seconds to push back up. Which one was harder? The second set was, right? But why? Well, the fist set you took 40 seconds to complete those 10 reps. On your second set, you took 100 seconds to complete 10 reps. That's over twice the amount of time of time that it took to complete the first set. Again, muscles tell time a lot better than they can count. Time Under Tension Time under tension (or TUT for short) is a commonly used term in the strength and conditioning and bodybuilding circles. In short, TUT refers to how long the muscle is under stress during a set. Look around in the gym. You'll see different lifting speeds and different times under tension. Some lifters will be doing their reps as fast and aggressively as possible while others use slow and controlled speeds. Research show that the time that a muscle works and tension (tension = how heavy the weight is) are key factors in determining muscle growth. By putting the muscle under longer bouts of tension, you can cause more muscle breakdown leading to the sleeve-busting muscles that you're working so hard for. Listen to this episode for the practical tips on how to use time under tension training to get the best results!

Ep 183183: 3 Reasons Why You Should Watch "I Am Not Your Guru" (Even If You're Not A Tony Robbins Fan) with Ted Ryce

Friday night, Gisele and I stayed in and watched I AM NOT YOUR GURU, the new documentary about Tony Robbins on Netflix. To be honest, I wanted to watch something else but Gisele was insistent because Tony is one of her heroes. And I have to say that it was one of the most engaging and inspiring movies I've ever seen. Here are three reasons why you should watch it (even if you're not a Tony Robbins fan): Advanced Communication Skills: In the movie, you'll watch Tony go through some unbelievable situations with some of his attendees. You'll watch how Tony is able to cause a state change in the person he's speaking with. It's simply incredible to watch Tony navigate tough situations with empathy, grace and control. You'll also see how he's able to help people with their struggles on the spot. Although I've enjoyed some of Tony's CDs in the past, I've never been to one of his events. And I wouldn't call myself a "true fan." But after watching, him in action at his Date With Destiny seminar, I've made it a point to attend one of his live trainings to experience it for myself. Simplification: If you're like me, you might sometimes tend to overanalyze things. (Or always overanalyze things haha) When you watch this movie, you'll get a first hand look at how simply the human brain is wired. ...and how it's really the "little things" that make the biggest differences. I think you'll find this especially inspiring! It's being surrounded by like-minded people, making friends, exercise, trust and having a plan is. You just may come away feeling like, "I can totally do this!" Motivation And Inspiration: Which is weird ...because it's not a motivational movie. Motivation is not the point of it at all, actually. It's really an inside look into one of Tony's $5,000 Date With Destiny events. But I challenge you to watch it and not feel motivated and inspired. I shed a few tears watching as well. What I advise you to do is to watch it and immediately after write down your health & fitness goals for the week. And make them habit-based like: I will take a walk every day or I will workout with weights 3 times this week. Anyway - I just wanted to share it with you. I think it's only on Netflix for now and totally worth the watch. Have a great week! Ted

179: Ted Ryce: 5 Science-Backed Ways To Take Control Of Your Health And Prevent Chronic Disease

In my 17 years as a health & fitness expert and personal trainer in Miami Beach, I've known and trained some great doctors…interventional radiologists, plastic surgeons, emergency medicine doctors and more. But I've also had my share of frustration and disappointment with some doctors as well. When I went to a cardiologist after a panic attack landed me in the emergency room, he gave me an echo stress test and said everything was fine. There was no evidence of a cardiac infarction and my echo stress test showed that my heart was normal and healthy—even though everything was NOT fine. It took me months researching stress on my own and finding ways to manage stress because doctors I saw didn't have any solutions for me. Have you had a negative experience with a doctor as well? It seems like they're trained to deal with bacterial infections, blood diseases, and broken bones. And they're great for those medical issues. But when it comes to chronic health issues, traditional doctors don't have ANY helpful answers. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy to have doctors who can perform life-saving surgery and prescribe drugs when it's called for. But the reality is that YOU need to be your own health advocate. Medical doctors will not save you. It's your responsibility to take control of your health and save yourself from financial ruin by learning to take care of your body. Let's take a look at the cost of chronic disease in the United States. Chronic diseases—such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, type 2 diabetes—are some of the most common and expensive health problems in the United States. Approximately half of all adults in the United States had at least one chronic health condition in 2012, while 1 in 4 adults had two or more chronic health conditions. Another important fact is that in 2010, more than 83 percent of healthcare spending in the United States was for people with at least one chronic (and preventable!) health condition, with heart disease and stroke costing $315.4 billion alone! So where do you start if you want to look great, feel great AND save money? Listen to my 5 Ways To Take Control Of Your Health And Prevent Chronic Disease

178: Ted Ryce: Burn More Fat & Build More Muscle: 5 Ways To Personalize Your Workout For Better Results

Getting results from exercise is more than just selecting good exercises or pushing yourself in the gym. It's about the picking the best options for your goals, body type and ability to recover. If every workout were created equal, they would create the same results for every person. But all workouts aren't created equal and neither are we. We all have different genetics, body types, stress levels, eating habits, sleep quality and responses to exercise. While most effective workouts boil down to the same principles, there's a reason why many of the best bodies in the world used very different strategies to build them. And if you'd like to here how I teach the principles of exercise, check out my episode on The 7 Most Important Exercise Training Principles For Getting Better Results. Part of it has to do with understanding the science of building strength and muscle as well as fat loss. The other part is the art of applying the science and principles to the unique person you have in front of you. That's what I've specialized in for the past 17 years working with my personal training clients here in Miami Beach. I had to be an "exercise agnostic" to be successful with my clients. Not all of them wanted to do the big lifts like squats and bench presses—especially the women! And not all of them could even perform all the different exercises correctly so we had to try easier versions. Some clients showed up as complete beasts and I had to work hard to figure out how to challenge them! Personalizing your workouts to your goals, body type, recovery ability, etc will help you get the best results for all your effort in and outside the gym. However, I know that everyone can't be part of my fitness coaching program so I wrote this article to help you get better results from all your hard work in the gym by personalizing what your workouts. Below are 6 ways you can personalize your workouts to help you achieve what most of us are after: a better looking and feeling body!

173: Ted Ryce: The Ultimate Diet For Building Muscle (And Improving Your Health)

Are you confused about exactly what to eat for optimal health AND physical performance? You're not alone. I've been studying nutrition in college and on my own for over 17 years…and I still get confused at times! It's no wonder. A search on Amazon for "diet books" yields over 200,00 results! There's so much conflicting information… "Eggs are good for you." Vs. "Eggs raise your cholesterol and will clog your arteries." "Carbs are evil." Vs. "You need carbs to train hard and build muscle." "Protein is essential for building muscle." Vs. "Eating meat will give you cancer and ruins the environment." It's leaves you frustrated, confused and feeling like, "Screw this nutrition thing, it's too complicated!" It doesn't have to be this way. And you don't have to be a "diet zealot" who practices an almost religious adherence to a particular nutrition philosophy. And there's no need for you to beat your head against the wall trying to figure out the perfect nutrition plan that makes you look AND feel great! I get results for my clients and myself by following what I call "Nutrition Basics." And we don't eat boiled chicken breast and steamed broccoli out of Tupperware six times a day either. In fact, I'm telling you that you can look and feel great AND eat delicious meals…and a desert every once and a while. (Yes, for real.) Below you will find my 8 basic principles of nutrition that will give you everything you need to lose fat, build muscle, improve your health, boost your energy and ultimately look and feel great. This list is the result of nearly 30 years of formal study, self-study, experimentation and working with hundreds of clients. It also includes essential lessons I've learned from countless conversations with nutrition experts, performance coaches, behavior change experts, strength coaches, as well as medical doctors who specialize in health, anti-aging and longevity. By following these principles, you can expect to achieve… Faster fat loss ● Faster muscle gains (without added fat) ● Less mood or energy highs and lows ● More focus and concentration ● Better digestion ● Better immune system (i.e. less colds and sick days) ● Increased libido ● Less aches and injuries Enough talk…listen to the episode to get the whole story!
