S8 Ep 196196. Keira D'Amato, Pro Runner & American Record Holder In the Marathon
Welcome this new record holder (also, my new BFF) to the show! For episode 196, Keira's talking about how she got here: From post-college running to the injury that had her taking a step back. She talks about having children, getting married, and diving head-first into her career as a realtor only to come back to running as a "hobby," — knowing that it was a big risk that could go well or set her up for disappointment. It wasn't long until she started taking her hobby to new heights, setting fresh goals, and aiming to go after Deena Kastor's American record — set in 2006 back in London. We cover it all: From what it felt like in Houston, how she feels about doing things "differently" than other pros, her favorite Oreo flavors, and what's next. #HURDLEMOMENT: How To Make Yourself a Morning Person
Mornings are pretty polarizing, right? Either you love them and fully embrace the phrase “the early bird gets the worm,” or you’re more of a snooze button enthusiast. If you’re the latter, you may want to reconsider your daily kickoff, and here’s why: Research shows that morning people are more proactive, happier, and more consistent with their workout routines. In today’s episode, I’m answering the most popular question I see in my DMs: How do I become a morning person, too? Good news! I'm giving you the insights on my early days, and offering seven tips you need to become a morning person, too. You're going to need a fresh notebook and some willpower (a sweat-friendly playlist won’t hurt, either). S8 Ep 195195. Chrissy King, Writer, Fitness Coach & Creator of The Body Liberation Project
Today I am chatting with Chrissy King. She’s a writer, speaker, and educator, with a passion for creating a diverse and inclusive wellness industry. She is also the creator of The Body Liberation Project, through which she empowers individuals to stop shrinking, start taking up space, and use their energy to create their specific magic in the world. What I thought was special about Chrissy is that we both started getting into fitness with a desire to lose weight, but found so much more within this world beyond the physical. For episode 195, she talks to me about how that shift happened — finding love in power lifting, competing on a national level, and steering her inner dialogue toward body positivity and what that looks like for her in practice. She talks openly about her breaking point, a #hurdlemoment that affirmed there’s so much more to life than being small. She also talks to me about the diversity and inclusion work that she’s been doing in the wellness industry and how a business coach really helped her find her voice and home in on growing her brand. My favorite thing about the New York-based entrepreneur? Her passion to empower others from all backgrounds to be celebrated and feel seen. #HURDLEMOMENT: An Expert On How to Maintain Weight Loss
Today I'm connecting with Dr. Gary Foster, Chief Science Officer at WW, a psychologist and obesity investigator. Statistics show that weight loss maintenance is extremely difficult, so much so that a majority of people who lose weight gain some (or all) of it back. After losing 70 pounds in college and keeping a majority of it off myself, I was excited about the opportunity to offer up what worked for me with some expert feedback in today's episode. S8 Ep 187187. Courtney Dauwalter, Ultra Runner
Today I sit down with arguably the best female ultra runner in the world, Courtney Dauwalter. You may recognize her name from her most recent dominant performance at Ultra-Trail Cape Town, finishing in first place with a time of 11:20:04, and for those who don’t know, that's a 100K (62+ -mile!) trail race. Superwoman is an understatement here. She has a slew of other medals under her belt, which we talk about in this episode, but we also dig into so much more. From the ins and outs of all things trail running, to Courtney’s journey into the sport, to how it’s never too late to pivot and follow your passion. (Courtney’s professional running career started at 32-years-old.) Plus: Her advice for anyone going through a tough hurdle of their own and her go-to pre- and post-run eats (hint: pancakes are involved). Season Eight! What’s up!? This week, Emma Coburn, three-time Olympian & 2017 steeplechase World Champion, joins me for episode 186. We had the chance to catch up when she was in town recently over NYC Marathon Weekend, and got into it all from her backstory to her recent trip to the Tokyo games. Emma tells me that she didn’t truly love running at first, what changed her attitude toward the sport, and the impact that team has had on her training and life. We also unpack what it’s like to train with all of her best friends in Colorado on Team Boss and be married to your coach. Plus, we talk about some tough stuff: Despite being favorited to come back home with a medal this year at the Olympics, Emma came up short. We talk about the ~why~ plus how she navigated the emotions of that. Emma also opens up about how she’s been doing since her mom was diagnosed with cancer in December 2019, and shares a beautiful perspective about consciously choosing optimism and happiness even when life’s hurdles get you down. S7 Ep 185185. Jordan Chiles, Gymnast & Olympic Silver Medalist
In 2021, millions learned Jordan Chiles name. The 20-year-old made waves at this year’s summer games by stepping in for best friend and teammate Simone Biles after Biles withdrew from the team competition following a shaky showing on the vault. For episode 185, we talk all about that moment in Tokyo, what it felt like to get that silver medal, and the necessary conversation that team USA gymnastics sparked about the prioritization of mental health. Plus, we learn about Jordan’s beginnings in Texas, how she unwillingly went to her first-ever gymnastics practice, how she navigated verbal abuse early in her gymnastics career and the impact it's had on her. As a runner, to get advice from 4-time Olympian (and silver medalist!) Shalane Flanagan the day before running the New York City Marathon is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But as the host of this show? It was unbelievable to sit down with her LIVE and in-person at the culmination of Project Eclipse, a 6-marathon journey over 42 days in which Shalane taught us all that sport is for life. We chat about it all: From how she got started with running (fun fact: her mom once held the world record in the marathon!) and what it was like being a collegiate athlete to the sacrifices she made along the way to make a name for herself. We laugh over stories from her world travels and marathons past (Boston 2018, anyone), and she tells me what it means to her to be the 2017 New York City Marathon champion. We also chat big, hairy, audacious goals, why she decided to go after the back-to-back six world marathon majors this year, and what it's like for to wear the Coach hat with the Bowerman Track Club. S7 Ep 182182. Will Valderrama, Runner
On May 7, 2021, Will Valderrama (called Willy by some of his friends) found out that he has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). On May 10, while at in-person treatment at Weill Cornell, he signed up for a marathon. At the time, he was in a wheel chair — unable to walk in a straight line. Fast forward five months and a lot of difficult moments: On October 16, not only did he run that marathon — but he conquered it, racing through Atlantic City, New Jersey in 4 hours, 22 minutes. When I saw the video of him crossing the finish line, I knew I needed to have him on the show to tell his story. Today, we get into it all, from what it was like to start experiencing MS symptoms and getting a diagnosis to training while symptomatic. Plus: How he had to change his day-to-day, the debate of whether or not to move from his Brooklyn home, and a complete rundown of race day. This was truly an honor, to hear from Willy and to be able to share his vulnerability with the Hurdle community. I am more empathetic because of this conversation, and I'm forever inspired by his story of grit and determination.
