S5 Ep 148148. Trent Shelton, Motivational Speaker & Former NFL Player

Prepare to be inspired AF. Trent Shelton dreamed of being a professional football player from the time he was 5 years old. He bounced between three different NFL teams after playing at Baylor, and then made the decision to move onward and pursue a different path — battling hard emotions in the process. That career pivot lead him to motivational speaking and ultimately founding Rehab Time, a non-profit organization aimed at empowering struggling individuals to find their voice, passion, and purpose. For episode 148, the father-of-three talks to me about what it’s like to have a devoted social following including 2.1 million on Instagram, and how he’s grateful for the extra time he’s had to spend with his family over the past pandemic year. He also offers up his best advice on how to come into your power, what it really means to “do the work,” and how to make more confident decisions. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Progress Is Rarely Linear

On Monday's episode of Hurdle with Tunde Oyeneyin, we talked about the idea that progress is rarely linear. On your journey to success, whatever that looks like for you, there will be tough times. I’ve learned that both the highs and lows bring us lessons — lessons that help us progress. And while the tough stuff may be more difficult to navigate, these moments happen to teach us something. One “bad” day doesn’t rid you of the wins that came before. It informs you of how to better show up the next, and the next one after that, on the continuous quest for progress. Today, I'm talking about my progress as a runner, and how the not-so-stellar days are an important piece of the puzzle on my journey. PROMPT: What’s something you’re doing in your life right now that’s taking away from you making positive progress toward a goal? #HURDLEMOMENT: Trainer Taylor Rae Almonte On Having Conversations About Racism

February marks Black History Month, a time for education and celebration of Black culture. Today, I'm grateful to have Taylor Rae Almonte, an Afro-Latina actor and activist, on the show to share her story and have an open, honest conversation about race. Taylor’s a trainer at Rumble, a Reebok-sponsored athlete, and co-founder of an anti-racism wellness program ACTIV-ISM — which combines regular movement and mindful activities (from equipment-free workouts and walks to journaling) with anti-racism education. For today’s installment of #HURDLEMOMENT, she’s chatting with me about how she's combined her passions for social justice and health to find new purpose over the past year. We also unpack a handful of racial justice terminology to empower us to continue to have thoughtful, progressive dialogue going forward.  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE 96. S5 Ep 147147. Tunde Oyeneyin, Peloton Instructor

To say that Tunde Oyeneyin is a bright light would be the understatement of the century. Even though the Peloton favorite has been through her fair share of hurdles, her outlook on life is optimistic. In episode 147, she talks me through the toughest of them, from a dramatic weight loss and dealing with not getting the instructor job at Peloton the first time she auditioned to the loss of both her brother and both of her parents. I know on the show we talk about the tough stuff often, but to hear someone who has dealt with so much loss have such a beautiful outlook — it really reminds us all about the power of gratitude. Tunde also tells me about her career before finding Peloton, and I love how she expands upon this idea that it’s OK for your goals to evolve and change over time. The Hey, Girl podcast host opens up about her traumatic teenage years and details how writing and therapy saved her life. #HURDLEMOMENT: Sugar 101, An Expert Answers Your Top Questions

Ready for a sweet chat? (Pun, intended.) In today's installment of the podcast, I'm catching up with registered dietitian, author, and intuitive eating counselor Alissa Rumsey to chat all about sugar. We talk about everything from the difference between added sugars and natural sugars, what sugar alcohols are, if it matters what time of day you’re consuming sugar, and whether or not smoothies are just "healthy-branded sugar bombs." Also: We touch on diet soda, our feelings on labeling anything as "bad," and discuss our current relationships with the sweet stuff.  Note: It is necessary, from a medical perspective, for some people to pay extra close attention to their sugar intake, especially if they have diabetes. The Australian-born entrepreneur and former Australian Football League player shares his inspiration for the massive career pivot into hospitality, and how he knew from early on that their concept would be bigger than just the first couple shops. 144. Dave Asprey, Biohacker, Author & Founder of Bulletproof

By now, you've probably heard of Dave Asprey, or at least of the company he founded — Bulletproof 360 (home to The Bulletproof Diet and Bulletproof Coffee). Aside from having those tidbits on his resume, he's also the founder of the biohacking movement. As he defines it, biohacking is the art and science of changing the environment around you and inside of you so you have full control over your own biology. This week, Asprey has a new book out called Fast This Way, and in today's episode he tells me how he got to this point. He talks to me about what life was like when he weighed 300 pounds, Was a computer hacker, and dealing with a slew of health issues including arthritis — which lead him into learning and inventing biohacking. He explains how he started to spend money on getting "better than he ever had been," and what that really looked like.  Now, obviously we address that we don’t all have hundreds of thousands of dollars to hack our own health, so naturally Dave offers some low cost and free examples of small ways we can all safely level up, whether it be through our diet or other practices — like cold showers. We also talk about his impressive career history — how he made a small fortune by the time he was 26 and then lost it when he was 28. Plus: The episode kicks off with a beautiful discussion on the importance of gratitude. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Focusing On Life Offline

I went through a phase in mid-2020 when I made the conscious decision to unfollow a slew of people on social media and “block” others from viewing my Instagram story. Recently, one of them reached out to me, and we had a reckoning of sorts. I noticed that since we reconnected, the person made a concerted effort to check in from time to time, more so than before. S4 Ep 143143. Becs Gentry, Peloton Instructor & Runner

With personal best times of 1:16 in the half marathon and 2:37 in the marathon, Becs Gentry is a stellar athlete — proud of the body she’s built that enables her to show up every single day. But in episode 143 of Hurdle, she tells me about a time in her life when she actually didn’t feel super comfortable in her own skin. The Peloton instructor details what it was like to first start integrating more walking into her day to day back home in England, and how that routine slowly developed into a running habit.  She tells me about the conversation she had with her uncle that changed everything, empowering her to get out of a bad relationship and pivot in her career, what it was like to travel the world for nike during the early stages of Nike Run Club, and the call from Rebecca Kennedy had her packing her bags and moving to New York to join the Peloton team. She also shares her best advice for how to handle negative self talk, something I know we all can be guilty of from time to time. This one's jam-packed with goodness, it’s also an episode that ya’ll have been DM-ing me asking for! So! I’m happy that it’s one of the first in the new year. For episode two of the series, I'm chatting about the power of positivity with Nichelle Hines, activist, actor, and chief ride officer at Cycle House. Inspired by the tough year that was, I think it's safe to say that many of us could use a little motivation to look on the bright side. In today's episode, Nichelle is talking us through how to focus on the good, the one thing you should do as soon as you wake up (and before you go to bed) that can make a major difference, and how embracing your authentic self can make a world of difference.  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE 123. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: How to Come Back Stronger After An Injury — Or Any Hurdle

In last night's Hurdle Session, we had a really special conversation about navigating life post-injury. I knew that I needed to share my sentiments on it on the feed. Injuries, and all of life's hurdles, are tough. They make us feel like we're not good enough, and it's hard to figure out the "right" way to move forward. S4 Ep 137137. Emily Harrington, Pro Rock Climber

This conversation is magical. This week, I am so elated to bring you my chat with Emily Harrington, pro rock climber and adventurer. On Election Night, when most of us were glued to CNN and other coverage, she was making history — starting a free climb of the route Golden Gate on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Over the course of the next 21+ hours, she became the first woman to free climb this route in under 24 hours, a huge accomplishment. I knew instantly that I had to have her on the show, ASAP. For episode 137, Emily talks to me all about this impressive goal — from the planning to the execution — and details a super scary moment when she  fell during her climb, completely puncturing her forehead. She also gives me some of her backstory — how she got involved in climbing in the first place growing up in Boulder, Colorado — and how at one point she was deciding between becoming a lawyer or taking on the sport professionally. You want some motivation? This episode is full of it. 5-MINUTE Friday: An Honest Look In the Mirror

For years now, I've had this mental block about wearing my hair naturally. You see, when I was overweight back in high school and college, I wore it that way all the time. #HURDLEMOMENT: The New York City ~Virtual~ Marathon, A Recap

It still doesn’t feel real, TBH. On October 31, I ran myself a virtual marathon, and managed to snag myself a personal best time of 3:23:56. In today’s #HURDLEMOMENT episode, I’m giving the full recap — from the preparations before the big day and how I fueled to the biggest mistakes I made and how I felt when I … didn’t cross any actual finish line. Plus, how this big milestone felt different from last year’s (previous) personal best marathon in Chicago. Warning: tears, a few expletives, and a bunch of feels ahead. S4 Ep 136136. Marielle Hall, Olympic Runner

Olympian Marielle Hall and I have a few things in common. We both navigated the pandemic living solo, for starters. We both also have spent a chunk of our lives in the northeast. And, we also both love running, she just does it a lot faster than me. In episode 136, we chat about her upbringing and love for all things active from a young age, what it was like to run in college in Texas, and her path to the 2016 Olympic Games. We also talk about her recent pieces for Runner's World, and she gives me her honest feedback on how she feels about the Olympics being pushed back. One note: We recorded this last Thursday, November 5, 2020, and it’s really, really insane how much can change in four days. S4 Ep 135135. Remy Park, Creator of @Veggiekins & Holistic Nutritionist

Remy Park's authenticity is refreshing as all hell. We met at The Big Quiet last year — hosted by past hurdler Jesse Israel — and have enjoyed keeping up with one another since. Today, she's garnered quite a following, sharing her vegan recipes, wellness tips and tricks, and New York City life over on her website Veggiekins. But her day-to-day hasn't always been matcha lattes and gluten-free desserts. In episode 135, she talks about her constantly evolving relationship with food, and details disordered eating habits that started at age 7 and lasted through her first year of college. We chat about what it was like for her to attend her first AA meeting, talk with a therapist on the regular, and begin keeping track of her day-to-day intake. She tells me how she developed embraced a healthier day-to-day, ultimately becoming a holistic nutritionist and sharing her eats with strangers (and friends!) near and far.
