134. Tim Brown, Co-Founder of AllBirds

Tim Brown once had a thriving career as a pro soccer player. But the New Zealand native had a curiosity about merino wool and a passion for design that had him walking away from one career in favor of another, founding Allbirds in 2016 with friend Joey Zwillinger. For episode 134, he gives me the lowdown on how it all happened, creating a smarter sneaker that we know today as the wool runner. He talks to me about the brand's original Kickstarter that caught on fire but resulted in the "worst year of his life," and the big lessons he's learned along the way to growing a thriving company. Fun fact: Today, Allbirds — a once-e-comm only brand — has 20+ stores globally, selling much more than a single sneaker. Just last week, they launched their debut clothing collection including T-shirts, crewnecks, and cardigans. #HURDLEMOMENT: 3 Simple Tips That Will Help You Run Faster

Three. Simple. Tips. This is probably one of the questions that lands in my DMs and email inbox most often. S4 Ep 133133. Gwen Jorgensen, Runner & Olympic Gold Medalist

When Gwen Jorgensen graduated from the University of Wisconsin, she had every intention of becoming a CPA. Within a year of working, she did her first triathlon, doing well enough to achieve elite status. Before she knew it, she had qualified for the 2012 London Olympics and life was never really the same. In episode 133, Gwen talks to me about the #hurdlemoment of navigating a flat tire in London, causing her to come in 38th place, and inspiring her to work harder than ever to make it back to the olympic stage in 2016. We talk about the big life decisions she had to make to follow that dream, including a move abroad and the relentless support of her partner Patrick, and what it was like to be the first woman to win Olympic gold in triathlon. Of course, we also get into her decision to leave triathlon for running full-time, what life’s like in Portland right now, and how motherhood and injury have both played big roles in her recent training. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: F@!k Expectations

The mile itself was cool. Heck, it was effin' awesome. But one of the biggest highlights for me last week was the immense amount of love I felt from friends, family, and this community combined. In today's installment of 5-MINUTE FRIDAY, I'm talking about how I've learned to implement gratitude and leave behind expectation (tough!), and how this practice has made a dramatic impact on how I feel in my day-to-day. #HURDLEMOMENT: Running My Fastest Mile EVER, A Recap

5:56. FIVE FIFTY-SIX! I'm still pinching myself. Last Friday, I ran a mile time trial with a friend with the goal to break 6:00. Well, I did it, and I have the Strava data to prove it. For #HURDLEMOMENT this week, I'm chatting about why the mile distance means so much to me and all the details surrounding the build-up to this particular effort. I offer up my pre-race routine, talk about my strategy going in, share the hardest part of the entire shebang, and how the entire experiment made me feel. (FYI: Super emotional TBH.) S4 Ep 132132. Cody Rigsby, Cycling Director at Peloton

What’s GOOD, Season 4!? Excited to kick things off with Cody Rigsby, the Cycling Director at Peloton.  You know what I love most about Cody? He is so unapologetically himself. For episode 132, he chats with me about growing up in North Carolina and knowing from the first time that he visited New York City that he was meant to be here. We talk about everything from when he accepted he was gay and what it was like telling his mom, to working three different jobs at once just to make rent at his first New York apartment while following his goal to be a dancer. He also tells me about Peloton “falling in his lap,” and how the job has been one of the biggest blessings of his life. The inspiration in this episode? It is literally endless. I definitely wanted to start off the new season with a bang, and I’d say this convo definitely gets the job done. S3 Ep 130130. Miles Chamley-Watson, Olympic Fencer

Miles Chamley-Watson never wanted to blend in with the crowd. Moving to the United States from London at a young age, he picked up fencing to deal with the criticisms he faced from his classmates when it came to "fitting in." That decision changed his life, excelling at the sport early on and eventually becoming world champion as well as a two-time Olympian. In episode 130, I chat with the Red Bull-sponsored athlete about how he got to where he is today, fending off the naysayers and staying the course to do what he loves, despite "not looking like anyone in his sport." He talks to me about the ins and outs of sponsorships, his lofty goal to be the first-ever fencer to make $1 million, and how he navigates the newfound fame that comes with success. Briohny Smyth knows a thing or two about overcoming hurdles. In fact, today’s conversation is full of so many hurdles, that at one point I was sitting next to my microphone literally holding my hands over my heart. Today, she’s an Alo Moves instructor, yoga teacher, and mother of two based in Los Angeles. But growing up, Smyth was actually a young pop star in Thailand, creating 10 albums in 10 years. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What's ONE Thing You Can Do For Someone Else Today?

This week had its fair share of small, annoying instances. (Don't they all?) The intercom/buzzer in my building went out, and I didn't know. This caused a slew of packages to be returned to sender. Funnily enough, the technician that came to fix it actually gave me an important reminder, which I'm sharing today on 5-MINUTE FRIDAY. PROMPT: What’s one thing you can do for someone else today? #HURDLEMOMENT: So, I Did a Virtual Race — Here's What I Learned

I told myself for months and months now that virtual racing was NOT something I was on board with. Then, my curiosity got the best of me. Last week, I ran a half-marathon PR doing the Seawheeze Virtual Half, and this week — I'm talking all about it for #HURDLEMOMENT. In today's episode, I'm offering up my five best-practice tips if you too want to tackle a virtual race, and get real honest about how the effort made me feel. Today's real MVP is Brett Williams, who was my safe-and-socially-distanced rabbit for the adventure. Thanks, Bud, for pushing me to a new personal best! S3 Ep 127127. Aisha Praught-Leer, Pro Runner

There's something about this conversation with Aisha Praught-Leer that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Sure, she may be married and an Olympian, but it felt like we were just two women in our thirties rapping about life and our similar struggles. In episode 127, the steeplechase athlete-turned-middle-distance runner talks to me about hitting her stride in her sport within the last 5 years, and what it was like to pivot on the track. We also chat about her fueling strategy, navigating injury, the newfound appreciation she has for her body and fluctuations in-season versus off-season, and what life's like in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. We also connect on the importance of good friendships (and how to form deep connections) later on in life, and how hers inspire her to be a better human — on and off the track. S3 Ep 126126. Allyson Felix, Sprinter & 6x Olympic Gold Medalist

Man, was I excited for this one. Allyson Felix is officially a hurdler! (Just, not at the actual track.) She's also a total legend. For episode 126, I'm chatting with the most decorated female athlete in track and field history. Felix realized her Olympic dreams early on at age 18, and has been unstoppable ever since. In today's episode, we talk about all of it. She tells me about what it was like to succeed in her sport at a young age, and what it was like to fall short of her goal in back-to-back Games. She tells me about simultaneously tackling college while thriving in her sport, the evolution of emotions through four different Olympic Games, and how she feels about the shift to 2021. We also chat about her exciting new chapter — becoming a mom — and how that has been both the best and scariest challenge of her life. She tells me about her new collection with Athleta, and how she's excited to finally feel like she has value to a sponsor beyond her racing times. #HURDLEMOMENT: Everything You Need to Know About Adaptogens

I've included adaptogens — non-toxic plants that help the body resist stressors of all kinds — in my regular diet for over 2 years now. I know why I like them: They make me feel more capable, sort of like meditation. My stress feels more at bay, and although I may not be able to attribute that all to the herbs — I swear they help. I wanted to dive into this topic, because a lot of the products I talk about on the show include them. That's where Danielle Ryan Broida comes in, the national educator for Four Sigmatic, a registered herbalist, and holistic nutritionist. In today's #HURDLEMOMENT, we talk about adaptogen basics: What are they, what are popular types, how much is the right amount, who is safe to take them, and a few other hot questions.  SOCIAL @danielleryanbroida @foursigmatic @emilyabbate @hurdlepodcast MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Herbalists! The first time I heard Jesse Israel tell his story inside the Guggenheim at The Big Quiet, I knew I wanted to know more. The second I knew more, I knew I needed to share his story with the hurdlers. Now the brains behind the mass meditation movement, Israel went to NYU and started his career doing something entirely different — heading up a record label. After signing multi-platinum artists like MGMT, the Los Angeles native started battling crippling anxiety and panic attacks. So, he took a step away from the music industry, and eventually found his way into the meditation space.  In episode 124, we chat about his journey between the two, and how he used his experience touring with big bands to concept all that The Big Quiet would become. We also talk about what it was like to host events in some of the country’s most iconic venues (including Madison Square Garden), his best-practice tips for incorporating mediation into your regular routine, and how it felt to go on tour with Oprah (!) at the beginning of this year. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Are You Overlooking The Most Important Part?

The moments before the run are big. Monumental, even. I argue, the most important part. They're slightly anxious, a little excited, and often hesitant. During those give-or-take 30 seconds where you’re debating initiating the actual effort, oftentimes you encounter some sort of minuscule annoyance, like the fact that your watch isn’t picking up a GPS signal or perhaps a wonky, unsettled feeling in your right knee. In these moments, you make the valuable, conscious decision to do something for you. To believe in your own potential. You accept whatever comes with the miles and minutes that follow. It’s a bold act, to open yourself up to the beauty that can come hand-in-hand with wanting to take this time for yourself. I'm talking about this for today's 5-MINUTE FRIDAY. #HURDLEMOMENT: How NOT To Talk To Someone About Their Weight

Weight is a pretty taboo topic, like money or sex. This week for #HURDLEMOMENT, I'm sharing a recent conversation I had about mine with a follower, and offering up some insight on how NOT to address such a touchy subject (especially with someone you may not know all that well). S3 Ep 120120. Chris Bennett, Nike Running Global Head Coach

This is about running. This is not about running. Chris Bennett, better known to athletes worldwide as Nike Running’s Coach Bennett, has a special way with words that encourages athletes of every level to be their best. In episode 120, the first of Hurdle’s season three (!), Bennett talks about the things you may expect from a coach, like best-practice tips for newbies and veterans alike, as well as strategies for nailing hot, summer workouts. But we ALSO get into a subject he rarely talks about: Himself. We chat about his backstory, running from a young age in New Jersey through college, and the #hurdlemoments he had along the way (including a sour relationship with the 4:00 mile). He confesses that without his wife, he may not be a run coach today, and talks to me about his hopes for the running boom we’re in right now. As someone who’s constantly showing up to be everyone else’s cheerleader, I found it super, super interesting to get to know the man behind the Nikes. Fun fact: Bennett was one of my original “dream guests.” Thanks for encouraging me to be a better me, Coach. #HURDLEMOMENT: 8 Essential Lessons I Learned As A New Cyclist

At the beginning of April, I got beautiful new bicycle — a Specialized Roubaix. Since then, I've learned a helluva lot. From the must-carry essentials for every ride to the ins and outs of urban cycling, I can vouch that there's a huge learning curve when it comes to being a total newb. Good news: I've got you covered. For #HURDLEMOMENT this week, I'm giving you the download on what I've learned over the past 90 days. From the ins and outs of "clipping in" to the honest truth about padded bike shorts (spoiler: You need them). Plus, offering up some of my favorite gear picks. A huge thanks to my friends at Specialized for making this possible. About 900 miles in, I'm so grateful for my new hobby and the lessons it's teaching me. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Are You Where You Really Want to Be?

I spent a better part of my day yesterday writing. But unlike most days, when I’m working on fitness content or offering up health tips, today’s words were mostly about my love for New York. Every day lately, it feels like someone new is telling me that they’re leaving this special place. Some permanently. Others just for now. New York has been one of the greatest loves of my life, and this week for 5-MINUTE FRIDAY I'm sharing why I'm not going anywhere, not yet.  PROMPT: If you could be anywhere with anyone, where would you be and with who? S2 Ep 118118. Jay Ell Alexander, CEO & Owner of Black Girls Run

Jay Ell Alexander wants to squash the notion that Black women don’t run. She herself recalls a time when she was the only Black female running with her training team, as a recent college graduate who wanted to incorporate more physical activity into her routine and get healthier. Today, she’s the CEO and owner of Black Girls Run, an organization that encourages and motivates women to get active and make a change in some tough statistics (as listed on their website), including that about four out of five African American women are overweight or obese. In episode 118, Alexander talks to me about her early days involved in the organization and the leap of faith she took to become the CEO and owner in 2018. We chat about the current social climate in the U.S., and her best tips for anyone asking “what can I do now?” or “how can I help?” She also serves up her best-practice tips for new runners, and gets real honest about the difficulties that come hand-in-hand with being a new mom and an entrepreneur. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: I Have to Get Something Off of My Chest

In April I was in a really bad place. Emotionally and physically. On the 10th of that month, I shared a story on Instagram about going into my kitchen 14 different times in one day. I was using food to cope with my problems, and I wasn't feeling good. I wrote about it some for SHAPE. Stepping on the scale was the final straw, reminding me of a difficult college #hurdlemoment, and thus began a lot of inner work trying to get to a better place. Journaling. Talking. Therapy. Strengthening. Less judgement. More acceptance. Setting boundaries. Better interactions. Now, a couple months later, I'm really proud of my progress. But here's the thing: No one's reaching out to me and commenting about my attitude. What I'm hearing, from friends and complete strangers alike, are comments on my appearance. In today's 5-MINUTE FRIDAY, I'm opening up about how that makes me feel.  PROMPT: What is something you're working on that no one knows about?
