Turning the Page With Chris Bennett, Nike Running Global Head Coach

For many of us, 2020 has been filled with one-too-many hurdles. It's finally (!) time to turn the page onto 2021, and in order to do that with a little bit of flair, I'm calling in the reinforcements. This week, I'm launching five back-to-back episodes with some of my all-time favorite guests, starting with Nike Running's global head coach Chris Bennett. We're chatting about some of the biggest changes in his life this year, the lessons he's learned, his big hopes for the next 365, and so much more. Perhaps the best part? Reinvigorating his moldy strawberry discussion (you'll have to listen to understand).  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE 120. S4 Ep 142142. Emily Sisson, Pro Runner

To say that New Balance athlete Emily Sisson is on the come up would be a major understatement. Recently, the 29-year-old snagged a shiny new half-marathon personal best of 67:26 at the Valencia Half, falling one single second short of the American record. For episode 142, we chat about how she got so speedy, starting with her upbringing as a multisport athlete leading her to a strong collegiate running career at Providence. Emily shares with me how inspired she is by good friend, mentor, and training partner Molly Huddle, and gets really honest about how she felt after her performance at the U.S. Olympic marathon trials earlier this year. We also swap virtual racing stories, she shares some of the biggest takeaways she has from working with a sports psychologist,  and offers up how she keeps her mind right when injuries happen. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: So, I Decided to Spend Christmas Alone

This week, I made the final call that I'd be spending Christmas alone cozied up here in New York City. Growing up in a multidenominational household, Christmas Eve has always been one of my favorite days of the year. But in 2020, we've all come to learn some difficult lessons. One I'm leaning into: it's important to not waste energy on the things we cannot control. I am consciously choosing the safe, more sane option (especially because COVID). For 5-MINUTE FRIDAY, I'm chatting about how the "right" choice still feels a little selfish. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: About the Time I Drank Champagne In the Bathroom

This week, I rode my bike near one of my old favorite spots. Known for complimentary champagne service in the women's bathroom and their soup dumplings (also, as a bougie New York establishment catering to A-listers and the well-dressed), Beauty & Essex was one of my go-to picks when I first moved to New York City back in 2012. I haven't been back in years, until this week, when I rode by it en route to find caffeine post-workout. S4 Ep 139139. Mindy Grossman, CEO & President of WW

This is one of those episodes that I've been after for a long time. I feel humbled and excited to bring the Hurdlers my conversation with Mindy Grossman, CEO and President of WW — formerly known as Weight Watchers. (For those who may not know about my weight loss journey, I lost 70 pounds with the help of Weight Watchers in college.) For episode 139, she's telling me about how she got to where she is today — growing up with adopted parents, graduating both high school and college early, and pivoting from the path to law school to follow her passion for business and move to New York City. We chat about her insane career journey, from leading teams at Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren to Nike and HSN, and she shares the best advice she's received in hers. Also: Top three words she'd use to describe Oprah IRL, we discover some comical similarities between the two of us, and swap feelings on NSV (non-scale victories). S4 Ep 137137. Emily Harrington, Pro Rock Climber

This conversation is magical. This week, I am so elated to bring you my chat with Emily Harrington, pro rock climber and adventurer. On Election Night, when most of us were glued to CNN and other coverage, she was making history — starting a free climb of the route Golden Gate on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Over the course of the next 21+ hours, she became the first woman to free climb this route in under 24 hours, a huge accomplishment. I knew instantly that I had to have her on the show, ASAP. For episode 137, Emily talks to me all about this impressive goal — from the planning to the execution — and details a super scary moment when she  fell during her climb, completely puncturing her forehead. She also gives me some of her backstory — how she got involved in climbing in the first place growing up in Boulder, Colorado — and how at one point she was deciding between becoming a lawyer or taking on the sport professionally. S4 Ep 136136. Marielle Hall, Olympic Runner

Olympian Marielle Hall and I have a few things in common. We both navigated the pandemic living solo, for starters. We both also have spent a chunk of our lives in the northeast. And, we also both love running, she just does it a lot faster than me. In episode 136, we chat about her upbringing and love for all things active from a young age, what it was like to run in college in Texas, and her path to the 2016 Olympic Games. We also talk about her recent pieces for Runner's World, and she gives me her honest feedback on how she feels about the Olympics being pushed back. One note: We recorded this last Thursday, November 5, 2020, and it’s really, really insane how much can change in four days. S4 Ep 135135. Remy Park, Creator of @Veggiekins & Holistic Nutritionist

Remy Park's authenticity is refreshing as all hell. We met at The Big Quiet last year — hosted by past hurdler Jesse Israel — and have enjoyed keeping up with one another since. Today, she's garnered quite a following, sharing her vegan recipes, wellness tips and tricks, and New York City life over on her website Veggiekins. But her day-to-day hasn't always been matcha lattes and gluten-free desserts. In episode 135, she talks about her constantly evolving relationship with food, and details disordered eating habits that started at age 7 and lasted through her first year of college. We chat about what it was like for her to attend her first AA meeting, talk with a therapist on the regular, and begin keeping track of her day-to-day intake. She tells me how she developed embraced a healthier day-to-day, ultimately becoming a holistic nutritionist and sharing her eats with strangers (and friends!) near and far. 134. Tim Brown, Co-Founder of AllBirds

Tim Brown once had a thriving career as a pro soccer player. But the New Zealand native had a curiosity about merino wool and a passion for design that had him walking away from one career in favor of another, founding Allbirds in 2016 with friend Joey Zwillinger. For episode 134, he gives me the lowdown on how it all happened, creating a smarter sneaker that we know today as the wool runner. He talks to me about the brand's original Kickstarter that caught on fire but resulted in the "worst year of his life," and the big lessons he's learned along the way to growing a thriving company. Fun fact: Today, Allbirds — a once-e-comm only brand — has 20+ stores globally, selling much more than a single sneaker. When Gwen Jorgensen graduated from the University of Wisconsin, she had every intention of becoming a CPA. Within a year of working, she did her first triathlon, doing well enough to achieve elite status. Before she knew it, she had qualified for the 2012 London Olympics and life was never really the same. In episode 133, Gwen talks to me about the #hurdlemoment of navigating a flat tire in London, causing her to come in 38th place, and inspiring her to work harder than ever to make it back to the olympic stage in 2016. We talk about the big life decisions she had to make to follow that dream, including a move abroad and the relentless support of her partner Patrick, and what it was like to be the first woman to win Olympic gold in triathlon. Of course, we also get into her decision to leave triathlon for running full-time, what life’s like in Portland right now, and how motherhood and injury have both played big roles in her recent training. What’s GOOD, Season 4!? Excited to kick things off with Cody Rigsby, the Cycling Director at Peloton.  You know what I love most about Cody? He is so unapologetically himself. For episode 132, he chats with me about growing up in North Carolina and knowing from the first time that he visited New York City that he was meant to be here. We talk about everything from when he accepted he was gay and what it was like telling his mom, to working three different jobs at once just to make rent at his first New York apartment while following his goal to be a dancer. He also tells me about Peloton “falling in his lap,” and how the job has been one of the biggest blessings of his life. The inspiration in this episode? It is literally endless. S3 Ep 130130. Miles Chamley-Watson, Olympic Fencer

Miles Chamley-Watson never wanted to blend in with the crowd. Moving to the United States from London at a young age, he picked up fencing to deal with the criticisms he faced from his classmates when it came to "fitting in." That decision changed his life, excelling at the sport early on and eventually becoming world champion as well as a two-time Olympian. In episode 130, I chat with the Red Bull-sponsored athlete about how he got to where he is today, fending off the naysayers and staying the course to do what he loves, despite "not looking like anyone in his sport." He talks to me about the ins and outs of sponsorships, his lofty goal to be the first-ever fencer to make $1 million, and how he navigates the newfound fame that comes with success. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Getting Unstuck

This was one of those weeks where I felt like I was staring at my computer for far too long without doing anything. After day two of experiencing minimal wins at my desk, I made the conscious decision to do something about it and step away. In today's episode, I'm talking about how I got unstuck, and the lessons I learned along the way. S3 Ep 129129. Briohny Smyth, Yoga Teacher

Briohny Smyth knows a thing or two about overcoming hurdles. In fact, today’s conversation is full of so many hurdles, that at one point I was sitting next to my microphone literally holding my hands over my heart. Today, she’s an Alo Moves instructor, yoga teacher, and mother of two based in Los Angeles. But growing up, Smyth was actually a young pop star in Thailand, creating 10 albums in 10 years. For episode 129, she tells me all about the challenges that came hand-in-hand with fame at a young age, battling drug abuse and disordered eating while trying to keep it all together, create music, and perform. Smyth talks to me about how she first tried yoga in India during a work trip, and how that experience ultimately changed her life forever. We also chat the hardships of divorce, figuring out how to make a living doing what you love, and the scary side of pivoting during the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m telling you, this is an episode you don’t want to miss. SOCIAL @yogawithbriohny @alomoves @hurdlepodcast @emilyabbate Please note: There are some sensitive topics discussed in this episode. I find that September is a time that everything happens at once. Summer is winding down, everyone is trying to get on top of their to-do list, and life feels hard to catch up with. S3 Ep 128128. Olivia Perez, Entrepreneur & Host of 'Friend of a Friend'

At 26, Olivia Perez (called Livv by her friends) is motivated as all hell, and it's invigorating. For episode 128, I chat with the serial entrepreneur, co-founder of System of Service, Forbes contributor, and host of the 'Friend of a Friend' podcast about her journey thus far — from her first-ever internship at Teen Vogue to her partnerships with big-name brands like Coach and Tory Burch (plus, all the fun stuff in between). She also shares what it was like to grow up as a serious dancer, how she navigates life today "with blinders on," and the ways she's had to pivot during the pandemic. Olivia's got a no-BS attitude that I'm on board with, and this conversation felt like a breath of fresh air. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What's ONE Thing You Can Do For Someone Else Today?

This week had its fair share of small, annoying instances. (Don't they all?) The intercom/buzzer in my building went out, and I didn't know. This caused a slew of packages to be returned to sender. Funnily enough, the technician that came to fix it actually gave me an important reminder, which I'm sharing today on 5-MINUTE FRIDAY. PROMPT: What’s one thing you can do for someone else today? #HURDLEMOMENT: So, I Did a Virtual Race — Here's What I Learned

I told myself for months and months now that virtual racing was NOT something I was on board with. Then, my curiosity got the best of me. Last week, I ran a half-marathon PR doing the Seawheeze Virtual Half, and this week — I'm talking all about it for #HURDLEMOMENT. In today's episode, I'm offering up my five best-practice tips if you too want to tackle a virtual race, and get real honest about how the effort made me feel. Today's real MVP is Brett Williams, who was my safe-and-socially-distanced rabbit for the adventure. Thanks, Bud, for pushing me to a new personal best! S3 Ep 127127. Aisha Praught-Leer, Pro Runner

There's something about this conversation with Aisha Praught-Leer that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Sure, she may be married and an Olympian, but it felt like we were just two women in our thirties rapping about life and our similar struggles. In episode 127, the steeplechase athlete-turned-middle-distance runner talks to me about hitting her stride in her sport within the last 5 years, and what it was like to pivot on the track. We also chat about her fueling strategy, navigating injury, the newfound appreciation she has for her body and fluctuations in-season versus off-season, and what life's like in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. We also connect on the importance of good friendships (and how to form deep connections) later on in life, and how hers inspire her to be a better human — on and off the track. S3 Ep 126126. Allyson Felix, Sprinter & 6x Olympic Gold Medalist

Man, was I excited for this one. Allyson Felix is officially a hurdler! (Just, not at the actual track.) She's also a total legend. For episode 126, I'm chatting with the most decorated female athlete in track and field history. Felix realized her Olympic dreams early on at age 18, and has been unstoppable ever since. In today's episode, we talk about all of it. She tells me about what it was like to succeed in her sport at a young age, and what it was like to fall short of her goal in back-to-back Games. She tells me about simultaneously tackling college while thriving in her sport, the evolution of emotions through four different Olympic Games, and how she feels about the shift to 2021. We also chat about her exciting new chapter — becoming a mom — and how that has been both the best and scariest challenge of her life. She tells me about her new collection with Athleta, and how she's excited to finally feel like she has value to a sponsor beyond her racing times.
