Our guest this week is an avowed fancier of English Coonhounds but that has not always been the case. Ep 346EP 346: Gone To The Dogs Out On A Hunt

As they contemplate the trip and all it will entail in the coming days, they take time to recall the Autumn Oaks 25th anniversary event in Jasper, Indiana in 1984, 39 years ago! Nubbin remembers well the years 1984, 1985 and 1986 when his Black and Tan Hank was declared National Grand Nite Champion of the Black and Tan breed in each of those years was overall winner in 1984. The boys talk about the upcoming trip to the White River National Wildlife Refuge in this episode and admit, with some remorse and no little trepidation that they are getting older and may be needing to seek younger hunters to join the trips going forward to assist in handling the dogs. They’re not there yet but that picture is obviously coming into view. The Gone To The Dogs podcast is nothing if not a candid discussion whomever the guest may be and this one is no exception. But true to form, the boys have a good time when they get together and that’s evident throughout the episode. We’re betting you’ll enjoy the stories and the banter in this latest account of Fielder and Moore On The Road. Ep 341EP 341: GONE TO THE DOGS WITH THE REDBONE MAN

E

In this episode Steve and Fred catch up after their brief visit at the 2023 Autumn Oaks where, true-to-form, Fred was on his way to catch up with his cast for the Saturday night hunt. Ageless it seems, Moran continues to compete with his beloved Redbones long after most hunters have retreated to the recliner but that’s not Fred Moran. This episode is vintage Moran with stories, accounts of hunts recent and long past, and recollections of the good Red dogs he’s had on his leash over his many years. This one is for flannel-shirt wearing, tailgate-sitting, tobacco-spitting, long-shaving- whittling good ole boys (and girls) to enjoy. E

Jason and Cody get to talk about the age-old decision of going with a registered dog or a grade dog when building or adding to your pack. This is a very laid-back conversation, but hits on some heavy stuff. We all need to pay respect to the efforts of each other because we are all striving for the same goal. Making the best dog to fit our needs is the ultimate challenge with an ultimate payoff. Do you know what’s behind your dogs? Knowing where you came from can help you get where you’re going. Ep 339EP 339: Gone To The Dogs For Breeder’s Only

In this episode we journey to western Pennsylvania to pick the brain of master coonhound breeder Randy Smith of Lone Pine Kennels. Smith has been a guest before but this episode dives deeper into the whys and how’s of one of the nation’s most successful coonhound breeding programs.Smith has built his breeding program on a nine to ten-generation, female-centered Lone Pine line-breeding effort. Using his females, he reaches out to tap a vast network of stud dogs that have been evaluated according to his standards. Smith discusses the criteria he uses in making the all-important decisions that result in his obvious success. Steve asks Smith why and how he comes to choose popular studs like Bone Collector, Coma’s Stylish Legend, All Grand Track Man and several others to augment his years of work with the Lone Pine females. This episode will be most appealing to those that either want to breed coonhounds successfully or are simply intrigued by hearing how Smith has chosen the right pieces to create a masterful program that is producing results for pleasure and competition hunters alike throughout the coonhound word. As Steve’s dad Homon Fielder, the houndsman, would have said, “This one is a good’un.” Randy Smith may be reached by phone at 724-525-1892. Ep 337EP 337: Gone To The Dogs - Road Trip Part Two – Randy Smith

Smith joins the boys at his Lone Pine Kennels guest quarters where the trio participate in a laidback conversation about family, friends and of course, those world-famous Lone Pine Treeing Walkers.Smith’s “Lone Pine” resume reads like the win record for Kentucky’s Calumet Farms or, to keep it local, the six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith’s hounds had a breakout year in money-hunt competition in 2023, with Lone Pine Lady and Lone Pine Bella respectively, winning a truck and a first-place finish worth $100 grand. Both occupy prominent spots in the conversation. This is a coon hunter’s episode with all the elements that push the hot buttons of hunters of all persuasions; pleasure hunting, competition and breeding to name a few. With coon seasons in full swing and autumn woods ablaze, you can’t get much closer to our favorite sport at our favorite time of year than with this conversation. It’s a plumb good’ un! Ep 327EP 327: Gone To The Dogs with Robert Raxter

Ball’s Stylish Hickory Nut Harry, House’s Lipper, Rock River Sackett, Jr., Rat Attack, Schmersal’s Stylish Queen, Logan’s Wild Clover and of course, Hardwood Bozo all appear, and some more than once, in Mojo’s five-generation pedigree, dogs that made the hound one of the most popular stud dogs in the history of the raccoon-hunting sport.. Robert Raxter of Brevard, North Carolina is the man responsible for purchasing Mojo as a pup seventeen years ago, for training that pup and for winning the 2008 PKC Spring Super Stakes with him before selling half interest in the legendary hound to Scott Engle as a three-year old. Mojo would win the 2009 Spring Super Stakes and the 2009 UKC Triple Crown under the ownership of Engle and his partner, the late J.C. Ellis.Raxter is widely recognized as a hound man of the first order, a superb pup trainer, and of course for the big-winning hounds that have eaten his feed. In this interview, Steve explores the methods that made Raxter and his Boogar Hollow Walkers famous. It’s a candid interview in which Raxter openly discusses his experiences in a sport that he has now set aside in favor of squirrel hunting with mountain cur/feist crossed dogs, dogs that he has owned and bred for twenty years. Ep 323EP 323: Gone To The Dogs at Autumn Oaks

The episode begins with the “First Family of Autumn Oaks” consisting of Curtis Elburn and his two daughters Nikki Elburn Rorvik and Andi Elburn Emory. Curtis has attended fifty-one consecutive Autumn Oaks events dating back to 1972 and his daughters have attended thirty-eight and forty events consecutively themselves. Steve remembers the ladies as babes in strollers as their parents attended Autumn Oaks. Shortly after the interview was conducted, Andi won the prestigious National Grand Show Champion of Autumn Oaks with her Redbone Coonhound. Newcomers Shane Richard of Idaho and Esther Weimer traveled across the nation to attend their first Autumn Oaks and present an interesting interview including their first impressions of the event and an inside look at the part UKC-registered coonhounds play in their hunts for bears and mountain lions in the American West. Rounding out the episode is an entertaining visit with three young hunters, ages 13 through 15, from New York and Tennessee, that met at Autumn Oaks. It’s a look at the grand old event in the eyes of the future and will be much enjoyed. Ep 318EP 318: Gone To The Dogs ARE MAGAZINES RELEVANT TODAY?

Steve invited Corey Gruver back to the Gone To The Dogs microphone, after a recent guest appearance, and the two seasoned contributors tackle the question, “Are coon hunting magazines relevant today?” Gruver will be working with the revived publication and reveals some of the mission planned for the periodical going forward. The discussion begins with news of Gruver’s newest project, training his first Plott female. Steve’s experience with the breed spanning seventy years, and Gruver’s recent experiences including treeing a black bear, make for interesting banter involving the brindle breed. Steve finishes the episode by sharing an article his father, Homon Fielder had published in Full Cry in 1971, fifty-two years ago. Ep 316EP 316: Gone To The Dogs With Gary Knapp

Steve and Gary became acquainted through their legislative activities and the mutual love for the Plott breed and have had many conversations over the years. Gary is a humorist with a gift for telling stories from his native West Virginia, many centered on hunting with hounds and jam-packed with local color. Knapp provided material for Steve’s monthly columns in American Cooner magazine under the heading “Mule Tales.” Gary was given the nickname Mule as a result of his strength and work ethic when a younger man. This one is seasoned with mountain flavor like smoked pork sausage or country ham. Get yourself a biscuit and pass the blackberry jam. We’re about to share country word-vittles, Gary Knapp-style. Ep 315EP 315: It's Puppy Time!

E

For today’s episode, Buddy and Don sit down and dive deeper into the topic of picking a pup. They talk about things to consider when picking your first pup, the family dynamic when picking a prospect, and the intuition of a bitch to select the strongest and most viable pups. They also touch on the topic of not just picking the best pup, but the right pup for you and your hunting/living situation around the 20 minute mark of the podcast. Ep 314EP 314: Gone To The Dogs With Troy Hoffman

From the first episode in September of 2021, the aim of the Gone To The Dogs Podcast has been to reach out to guests from across the whole spectrum of the hound-hunting sport, competitors, breeders, trainers as well as forks of the creek practitioners that ply their trade on the creek banks and woodlots down home. The podcast seeks out the guys that know good hounds and always seem to have one at the end of their leashes to fill the guest’s chair in every episode. Troy Hoffman is that kind of guy. A heavy equipment operator that manages the 500-acre family farm in western Indiana on the side, Hoffman hunts coons and coyotes with hounds, outwits big gobblers and trophy-class bucks with gun and bow and still puts up the occasional coon hide for area buyers to bicker over. His appeal to Steve and hopefully to the listener of this episode is that our guest is neither enticed nor enamored by the spotlight of major league competition hunting. He’s a tell-it-like-it-is kind of average guy that, if you listen closely, you’ll agree has an awful lot to say. Ep 311EP 311: Gone To The To Dogs Geezer Ville

On the evening of the recording of this episode Moran hunted his dog in a UKC-licensed Nite Hunt despite record heat and all the other challenges of summer hunting. Moran reveals his plans to attend and hunt at Autumn Oaks and that sparks a conversation about the trademark UKC Labor Day event, now in it’s 64th year. Moran reveals the unthinkable news of his hunting a Walker dog and the cronies go down an e-collar rabbit path that will no doubt trigger the one or two bunny huggers that routinely listen to the podcast.Moran’s story is remarkable and no matter the tale, he has a way of making it interesting to oldest and the youngest among us. Turn the fan up to high, grab a cold beverage and listen to a coon hunting conversation straight from the front porch swing in Geezer Ville. Ep 309EP 309: Gone To The Dogs with Team Perrin

Jamie has been a long time Black and Tan fancier and admits his search for another great black dog is a never-ending quest for the elder of the pair of men. Trey is Jamie’s son, a hard-to-please-competitor at the highest levels of coonhound competition. Currently Team Perrin is relying upon a pair of competition-bred and trained Treeing Walkers which are discussed in some detail. The Perrins are part of the annual hunting party to which Steve belongs at the White River Refuge in Arkansas and the discussion naturally drifts to stories from those annual hunts. Jamie discusses his partnership with the late Mike Harrell of Flora, Illinois and their famous Harrell’s Anne female, a big winner in her day. Trey and Jamie represent the hard-to-find father/son team that is rare in the sport today. This is a podcast that covers good dogs, good friends and the proof that families that hunt together stay together. Ep 308EP 308: Buddy and Mike's Bear Hunt Report

E

Today's episode it the product of an awesome anniversary trip for Mike! Many of you know Mike as he has been with DU for 10 years and is our Director of Operations and Service. To celebrate Buddy took him up north of the border for a very successful bear hunt. But don’t think that it was all roses and sunshine, it wouldn’t be a “Buddy Story” if there weren’t a few trainwrecks or speedbumps. Let’s just say that were just happy they both made it back across the border and back home. Ep 307EP 307: Gone To The Dogs in Sweet Home Alabama

Clint, a high school head football coach, uses motivational skills to encourage the youth in our sport. He and Steve discuss the temperature of coon hunting in Alabama which Chase has determined to be very good. A Black and Tan man from the start, Steve digs deep into the breed with Chase who has extensive knowledge of the top dogs and their successes in major competitions. Seizing the opportunity, Steve drills down to the core of Chase’s love for the breed, comparing the dogs of yesterday to today’s winning hounds and how the breed has changed over time. Ep 303EP 203: Gone To The Dogs with Lee McBride

E

When Steve’s brother Randy introduced him to the wit and wisdom of professional speaker Lee McBride, there was an immediate connection to the rotund comedian and pastor from the Land of the Crimson Tide. Later, when Randy revealed that McBride had penned a poem that had spoken to his sportsman’s soul like none he had heard, Steve knew he wanted McBride on the podcast. This episode introduces Lee McBride to the Gone To The Dogs audience with the promise that this will not be his last appearance. McBride is a storyteller in the mold of Jerry Clower; down home, southern, and with an affinity for real life situations, many of them revolving around hunting and especially hunting with hounds. This is a pop-a-top-on-grape-Nehi-and-take-a-seat-on-the-pop-cooler type of episode that anyone with a soul’s connection to the out-of-doors will love and appreciate.
