Ep 201EP 201: Gone To The Dogs At The Barber Shop

E

Bob and Steve spend the better part of two hours talking about the hounds and the hunters of the region of which there are many. No doubt Bob honed his story-telling skills in the shop where he has had a captive audience for decades. Come on in, climb into the chair and prepare for your coon hunting itch to be scratched and your own experiences doused with Bob’s special blend of coon hunting memorabilia as only a life-long coon-hunting barber can. When done, a glance into Bob’s mirror will reveal lots of familiar images of hunters and hounds that you will remember too. Ep 199EP:199: Born 100 Years Too Late, Dale Lee 17

E

A 14 day Jaguar hunt was not uncommon, but staying the duration was another story. Dale found himself with plenty of time for training/working dogs and scouting the next hunt as most hunters would harvest their animal and quickly return to their normal lives. The rugged and rough country was not something they found to be a pleasurable “walk in the park”.Dale recalls a conversation with fellow hunter/trapper Shorty Lyons about some Jaguar advice.Shorty seemed to be getting on plenty of good tracks, but the dogs just could not seem to close the deal. In Dales normal and humble manner, his advice hit like a Mac truck… “You better find yourself a new pack of dogs if you want to catch them.” And Dales words rang true over the rest of Shorty’s trip along with his next as he never caught a jaguar with his hounds. This leads into a great insight into the secret to big game hunting, grit! We also get to hear about the “Bonus Bounty Bear” responsible for over $30,000 in cattle loss! https://www.youtube.com/c/InterviewsStoriesandTales https://www.youtube.com/c/BrettVaughnCBVTV https://www.patreon.com/CBVTV?fbclid=IwAR3_ezq3oZf93eocipThrARo4zeuFGiMEzLbH0hxK--0K- IXn7rgXyEXax8 http://www.specialty-feeds.com/valu-pak.html?fbclid=IwAR1lhK2rm6ftnTzEtkP7AozLvW6Z2vyH5tpNf_TdgzIWctcCAmAh2Sx5k4o https://podcast.dusupply.com/ We would like to thank those who support this podcast.  Special thanks to Double U Hunting Supply for sponsoring this episode.  www.dusupply.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@DoubleUHuntingSupply/podcasts

Ep 198EP 198: Gone To The Dogs with Ricky Hawkins

E

Steve catches Hawkins tending the fire as he hickory-smokes jalapeno and cheddar cheese-laced summer sausage, a six-hour process at 165 degrees. The two old friends use a third of the time to catch up on memories of their days with PKC hunting, with mutual friends like Tam and Clay Young and publisher Terry Walker. This one is also for the straight-talking good ole boys among us as Hawkins talks straight about today’s dogs and hunters and the way things have gone in the hunts from his many experiences over the years. The boys talk on into the night as the smoker breaks down the fat and the back and forth renders some pretty solid content, proving that all coon hunting conversations are not just about good ole boys blowing smoke. Get yourself a beverage and savor the coon talk, Arkansas-style. Ep 195EP 195: Gone To The Dogs at the Tennis Center

E

Steve joined the PKC staff in 1998, the same year his guest Rusty Jones made the final four and placed second overall in the PKC Youth World Championship at Aurora. A recent phone conversation between the longtime friends prompted Steve to record this look back at one of the most enjoyable times for both he and Jones as well as thousands of other coon hunters, in all their years of experience with the sport.Jones and Steve paint a mental picture of the Tennis Center, not only by describing the physical attributes of the legendary venue but also by sharing stories of the people that made each visit to Aurora so special each year when October rolled around. This is coon hunting conversation with a nostalgic twist that will make those that never experienced Aurora wish they had, and all that were fortunate to be there, to yearn passionately to go back again. Ep 193Born 100 Years Too Late, Dale Lee 16

E

Today we go back to the early 40’s as Dale tells a tail of a great hunt and even has a little US history lesson for us. We get another great story of a Jaguar hunt in Mexico and Dale recalls being genuinely scared. Dale also introduces us to a couple of his dogs we have not heard about so far called “the fighting dogs” that were a sight to be seen on a bear. https://www.youtube.com/c/InterviewsStoriesandTales https://www.youtube.com/c/BrettVaughnCBVTV https://www.patreon.com/CBVTV?fbclid=IwAR3_ezq3oZf93eocipThrARo4zeuFGiMEzLbH0hxK--0K- IXn7rgXyEXax8 http://www.specialty-feeds.com/valu-pak.html?fbclid=IwAR1lhK2rm6ftnTzEtkP7AozLvW6Z2vyH5tpNf_TdgzIWctcCAmAh2Sx5k4o https://podcast.dusupply.com/ We would like to thank those who support this podcast.  Special thanks to Double U Hunting Supply for sponsoring this episode.  www.dusupply.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@DoubleUHuntingSupply/podcasts

Ep 192Gone To The Dogs with Lee Logan

E

The mission of this podcast, in part, is to entertain listeners each week with content that scratches that “scanlous coonhunt itch” affecting us all at set of sun or with the mere mention of hounds and hunting. Three thousand listeners per episode, over the last twenty-six weeks, indicate that the effort is hitting the mark in that regard.Secondary to the desire to entertain is the firm determination to record for posterity, the stories of as many of the coon hunting’s major influences and exceptional contributors as possible in the afforded time. In this episode the two longtime friends discuss Logan’s beginnings, his introduction to Treeing Walker hounds, the individual stand-out hounds that made “Logan’s Wild” a familiar by-word, and descriptions of the hounds that made the brand famous. The show finishes with a then-and-now look at the sport from which neither veteran hunter is remotely considering retiring despite the fact each is nearing the four-score mark in age. This one has something for coon hunters of all ages and levels of experience. There’s history, humor, hyperbole and hope, all wrapped up in an hour and forty-minutes of vintage coon hunting conversation that we’re willing to bet you will thoroughly enjoy. Alvin Withey has been hunting dogs longer than a lot of our listeners have been on this earth and he has the stories and the knowledge to show for it. From a young boy Alvin has been drawn to dogs, especially of the bear hunting variety. Eddie and Alvin swap stories from their days of hunting together, the dogs that kicked their bear hunting into high gear, and some interesting tales of clients they have guided over the years. Alvin also paints a picture of the past when good dogs were not real common and what lengths they had to go to for a good one. Ep 188EP 188: Beaver Ponds, Porkies and Bears with Elijah Keller

E

Today Elijah takes time away from his training season to talk some dogs. Elijah has been around hounds from an early age. But when the bear hunting bug sunk its teeth into him, it was game over. As soon as Elijah could drive, he chased the passion of bear hunting that can simply not be explained to its full glory. “If you know, you know”, but if you have not yet experienced a bear hunt over hounds Elijah does a pretty good job painting a picture. And if you’re a trainwreck fan, this episode has got your fix with plenty to spare. E

Risk was injured in a HALO (High Altitude, Low Opening) jump that ended his SERE active-duty career, but he continues to teach military skills to soldiers at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The boys discuss favorite hounds and a myriad of coon hunting’s most recognizable personalities, including Jess Dickerson and the late Timothy Ball, both of which Risk was and is well-acquainted.Risk reveals his affinity for Iowa-Style Walker dogs and how he includes the slogan of the 19-time National Championship-winning University of Iowa wrestling program in the names of his hounds having Hawkeye roots. Ep 181EP 181: Born 100 Years too Late, Dale Lee 14

E

Today's episode starts of with some of Dales work on a biological survey in the depths of winter. To add to the challenges, Dale had to do this one without the aid of his horses. We also learn that even the Lee dogs had a train-wreck here and there, so Dale gives us some hope for trash dogs. One could say this hunt had its share of hiccups but as usual it makes for a great story. Dale's humor shows through while he tries to pull the wool over his brother’s eyes, but a keen ear ruins his fun. Ep 177EP 177: Gone To The Dogs with Larry “Duke” Proulx

E

This episode travels back to the heyday of competition hunting when UKC events were experiencing their highest levels of participation, when the Purina Outstanding Nite Hunt Coonhound Award was competition-hunting’s most difficult most-sought-after prize and when hunters crisscrossed the countryside in search of coveted points to be counted at year’s end. It was the greatest of times in terms of national recognition for one’s achievements in the game and a time when the name Duke Proulx was legend among all others. With two UKC World Championships and two Purina Award championships to his credit, Proulx (pronounced Prue) was one of the most successful competitors of the day and in fact, of all time. This episode contains a lengthy conversation between two individuals who remember the era well, one from the field and one from behind the administrative desk. If you have heard of the guy with the unusual name and wondered what makes him tick, now’s your chance to meet The Duke. You will enjoy the experience. Ep 176EP 176: Working Backwards

E

Joeri Goedertier has spent most of his life working with and training dogs. Today we get to dive a little deeper into his new approach on training in reverse. While watching and learning from others is a great jumping off point in training, there comes a time that you will find yourself asking the infamous question, why? Why did this exercise work? Why did this dog react so differently to the others? Why am I awake at 2am thinking about what happened? Here is a new perspective and some logic behind his method of working things backwards. Ep 174EP 174: Gone to the Dogs with Martha Brown

E

Steve shares the Gone to the Dogs microphone this week with a charming and equally interesting guest from the State of Florida, Martha Brown. Coming from a bird dog background as a child, Brown learned the coon hunting sport from a local hunter affectionally known as Uncle Fred. When the coon hunting bug bit like a Florida mosquito, for Brown there was no turning back. A nurse professionally, Brown competition-hunted early on with English dogs but switched to the Treeing Walker breed and never looked back. Thinks came to a screeching halt when Hurricane Michael devasted her hunting territory in 2018. Brown’s newly completed home was mildly damaged but her property, including her kennels and all her trees on her were destroyed. If that were not enough, Brown was soon diagnosed with cancer. But Brown is no quitter, and her story has a happy ending.Steve met Martha Brown as she competed in the UKC Winter Classic coonhound competition in Albany, Georgia and was immediately impressed by her knowledge of hounds and hunting, qualities he judged to be on equal footing with some of the most knowledgeable hunters in the game. Brown, at the height of her hunting career was recognized as a topflight competitor, judge, and trainer of quality hounds. The conversation between two friends is ripe with memories and gets good when Steve coaxes Brown to share tales from her glory days in the sport. Ep 173EP 173: On the Road Again

E

In this week’s episode Jason travels to the Prineville OR field trial to do some “in the field” recording with Wes York, a true dyed in the wool Houndsman that has been involved in hounds his entire life. They talk a little about the event and how it has become an annual gathering place for hunters near and far, as well as the comradery that is built between Houndsmen at events like these. It’s not often you talk to someone who has ran the same line of dogs for 30 years, but when you find something that works, you stick with it. Wes has some great stories of hunting with his Grandfather Ken Craddock, Uncle Ted Craddock and other influential Houndsmen in his life. Ep 171EP 171: Gone to the Dogs with Steve Fielder

E

Ernest Hemmingway said, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” A longtime lover of books and especially those about hound hunting, Steve takes his listeners on a literary journey in this episode, an unusual “guest-free” trip in which he shares two old and dear book-friends from his personal library. A chapter from Steve’s book, Gone to the Dogs – A Coon Hunter’s Journey provides the basis for the first conversation centered upon a historic coon hunt in southwestern Michigan in the year 1924. Fielder builds his story upon the original story, published in Hunter-Trader-Trapper magazine from coon hunter Guy Beeman in which he and a friend capture a giant ringtail that stretched the tape to 50 inches, tip to tip. Steve embellishes Beeman’s tale with an in depth look at the times including the vehicles driven, the equipment used and the startling realization that the hunt takes place as the nation finds itself in the throes of an influenza pandemic the likes of which we have now experienced some one-hundred years hence. A second story from the aged classic turns comedic as Steve shares contributor Orma Winter’s tale of a city slicker on his first coon hunt with hounds. Also, in this episode Steve reflects upon three years of podcasting in which 157 episodes have been produced. Give this one a listen and we’ll celebrate together from our vantage point aboard a coon hunting time machine. Enjoy. Ep 170EP 170: Have You Done Your Homework?

E

Michal is no stranger to the DU Podcast, but today he joins Jason one on one to talk specifically about the process of prepping a dog for that monumental day, its first hunt. There is a lot that happens between a pup’s birth and its first trip to the woods. We all want to give our pups the best opportunity possible to succeed, so the guys take some time to talk about the “behind the scenes” work that you can do to give your pup the best advantage possible. They talk about some simple things you can do to put the odds in your favor, and how the results will benefit you and your four-legged companion. Ep 168EP 168: Gone to the Dogs with Mark Dufresne

E

Mark Dufresne is the quintessential outdoors renaissance man. Wildlife biologist, world-class taxidermist, professional Maine guide and hunter/breeder of some of the most-respected and acclaimed Plott bear dogs in North America are labels he deservedly wears without justifiable argument from his peers. In this episode Steve and Mark discuss his upbringing in the Massachusetts hill country inhabited by “simple hill folks,” and explore the varied aspects of the guest’s many-faceted and interesting life in the outdoors. But the conversation soon takes a hard turn into the realm of bear hunting with hounds and a lengthy discussion of Mark’s personal best hound to date, a female Plott dog named MD’s Elephant Mountain Brin. Lovers of hounds with heart and desire, that also appreciate a good story about just such an exceptional hound, will enjoy this podcast from beginning to end. Dufresne is a great storyteller with a resume as long as a cold trail and as exciting as a fresh jumped race. This one’s for bear hunters and it covers the sport from truck to tree. Enjoy. Ep 165EP 165: Gone to the Dogs with Larry Meeks

E

It’s old home week on the Gone to the Dogs podcast as Steve connects with his longtime friend and former boss, Larry Meeks. Meeks was the owner and served as CEO for Professional Kennel Club for thirteen years following his purchase of the popular coonhound registry in the fall of 1997. Fielder joined the organization in June of 1998 and served as its Senior Vice President through November of 2004. Conversation flows freely as Fielder urges Meeks to recall his meager upbringing in and around the Terre Haute, Indiana area. It’s a Horatio Alger story of a kid raised by a single parent, his dad, that was largely left to his own devices until he discovered his affinity to all things involving trucks. Meeks and his son Jeremy own and operate Gibco Motor Express, one of the nation’s top commodity haulers that haul, in Meeks’ words, everything from coal to bread.Meeks coon hunting background and an early affiliation with PKC led him to purchase the registry and catapult it into a thriving business in his 13-year tenure. He and Fielder relive the days and nights at the Tennis Center at Ken Lake State Park in West Kentucky where the Super Stakes and World Hunt were held back-to-back in a ten-day coon hunting marathon. Stories, some that include an inside look at the workings of a major coon hunting organization, abound in this entertaining episode. Enjoy. Ep 164EP 164: Risk and Frequency with Stephan Roaque

E

Buddy, Jason and Stephan talk about risk and reward. It’s amazing how a “normal” day in the woods, doing the same thing you have done 1000 times can turn into a train wreck in a split second. Something that we have not mentally prepared for or catch us off guard can have very different results than expected. The three focus on “high risk, low frequency” events and how they leave the most room for error and for things to go south. How exactly can a low risk event make the rapid an drastic shift to high risk? The guys have a couple good examples to ponder. Check out this great explanation by Gordan Graham for a quick crash course in the risk/frequency chart for a better base understanding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=Og9Usv82CdU&fbclid=IwAR3EU3CEswDzZuK7_SRodcEKvGdzXTM_t80n-HXgncIAyXddt1Z8P8yCmQE We would like to thank those who support this podcast.  Special thanks to Double U Hunting Supply for sponsoring this episode.  www.dusupply.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@DoubleUHuntingSupply/podcasts

Ep 159EP 159: Gone to the Dogs with JR Gray

E

In 2018, Kentuckian J.R. Gray made coon hunting headlines by winning, in the short span of two weeks, coonhound world championships in two registries, UKC and AKC. GRNITECH, two-time World Champion Rack Em Willy became one of the most recognized hound in the sport overnight. Winning one world championship in a lifetime of coon hunting is something most coon hunters never realize. Winning two in that span of time is unthinkable. J.R. Gray, at 27 years of age, has compiled quite a coon hunting resume with his hounds. Prior to winning two world championships, Willy made the All- Grand Top 16 at Autumn Oaks and was named the UKC Male Performance Hound of the Year, both in 2017. Willy is also a PKC Platinum Champion having earned more than $20 thousand in that registry’s events. As if Willy’s accomplishments weren’t enough, Gray finds himself basking in the limelight of one of today’s most prestigious wins, the UKC Tournament of Champions with a son of Rack Em Willy called Grand Nite Champion Gray’s Conor McGregor. Conor captured the coveted first place win and a check in the amount of $50 thousand at the second annual UKC Tournament of Champions in Greencastle, Ind., in April.Steve catches up with J.R. to discuss his amazing career with Willy and Connor in this timely and extremely interesting episode. Ep 156EP 156:Gone To The Dogs One on One with Stormin' Norman

E

One on One with Stormin’ NormanThe Gone To The Dogs Podcast this week features one of the most controversial figures in the sport of raccoon hunting, Norman Starling. From the State of Ohio, Starling is known throughout social media for his videos involving the 1 on 1 Coon League, essentially a challenge hunt with Starling calling out the owners of advertised coonhounds to go mano y mano against his flavor-of-the-day Bluetick in a three-hour competition where, in his words, the viewers are the jury as to who is packing the better hound. Starling’s outspoken demeanor, unorthodox views and flamboyant antics have divided his viewing audience into two distinct groups, those that disparage his flamboyance and in-your-face attitude and those that consider him one of the sport’s greatest influences. In this interview, Steve is determined to peel back the layers in an attempt to reveal the real Norm Starling and finds, to his surprise, that things are not always as they may seem. This will be one of the most-listened-to podcasts in the genre of coon hunting podcasts to date. To miss it is an admission that as a listener you really aren’t on the cutting edge of coonhound pop culture today. It may also mean you are a purist with no interest in the way that cookie crumbles.Either way, you owe it to yourself to see what Stormin’ Norman has to say when the record button turns red and Steve and Norm go 1 on 1. Ep 155EP 155: Picking a Puppy with Don Gilbert

E

For today’s episode, Buddy and Don sit down and dive deeper into the topic of picking a pup. They talk about things to consider when picking your first pup, the family dynamic when picking a prospect, and the intuition of a bitch to select the strongest and most viable pups. They also touch on the topic of not just picking the best pup, but the right pup for you and your hunting/living situation around the 20 minute mark of the podcast. This one is full of great insight and perspective on a very personal decision. So if your looking at picking a new pup or want something to ponder until its time to add that next pack member, this is a great episode for you. E

Bear and Nick talk a bit on beagles, bassets, and deer (not in the order). They also talk about the shrinking hunting opportunities around the US, and how it affects the average working class Houndsman. They also discuss crazy hounds that think they are Rambo at 5 months, and how Nick can tell his basset hound is getting tired by the tracks he leaves in the sand. It’s been a while since the two caught up, and that always makes for a great conversation. So Kick back and enjoy some good laughs along with some serious conversation. Readers readily recognize the work of one of the most prolific writers on the tree dog scene today, that of Missourian Amy Kovac Thomas. As a feature writer for American Cooner, Full Cry and Prohound magazines her articles appear regularly, whether breed columns for the National Treeing Cur Association or feature articles on major event winners, her ability to get the story promptly and tell it in the familiar vernacular of the sport, are well-established.Not only is Thomas a writer, she also breeds her family’s strain of Treeing Curs and also works closely with young coon hunters through Professional Kennel Club’s successful youth program for which she has served as National Director until her recent retirement.Amy is well-known throughout the coonhound world for her ready smile, love of a good laugh, and her contagious positive outlook on our sport and on life in general.Listeners will enjoy this episode as we discuss the many-faceted life of one the nicest folks I have had the opportunity to meet in my many years of involvement with the sport of tree dogs.
