Ep 298EP 299: GONE TO THE DOGS WITH COREY GRUVER
EIn this episode Steve talks with Corey Gruver of Greenville, Pennsylvania. Steve and Corey have a common denominator in their backgrounds, each having worked for United Kennel Club, the recognized chief registry of coonhounds worldwide. Furthermore, each worked with coonhounds and coonhound activities in what is now the Hunting Ops Department. Steve became interested in having Corey share the Gone To The Dogs microphone as he recognized Gruver’s wide interest in several breeds and combinations of breeds of tree dogs. Steve wanted to, and does, explore the reasons his guest has chosen to enjoy several breeds instead of being a single-breed hunter as most are. While at UKC Gruver wrote several articles that piqued Steve’s interest as well convincing the host that his guest would be an interesting speaker and he certainly doesn’t disappoint. He’s a very interesting guy and has no difficulty expressing himself on several subjects of interest to listeners of this podcast. Sit back and spend a couple of hours with Corey and you’ll readily see why Steve invited him to join the impressive list of hunters that have shared the Gone To The Dogs Podcast microphone with the old coon hunter. Ep 298EP 298: A Blast From The Past With Mark Dufrense
EWe cover a lot of ground on this one starting off with some Black tail studies, bad taxidermy and preserving pet ducks. We all have some good laughs, but it was also nice to hear Mark get deeper and explain what he looks for in a hound along with the true meaning of heart. He also talks about how some Plott dogs turned things around in the bear catching department. Some lion hunting tales and a couple guide/client mishaps get thrown in just for some more laughs as we wind things down. Thanks for some great conversation Mark, we hope you all enjoy! Ep 297EP 297: Gone To The Dogs – Tribute To Cas Walker
EThis TRIBUTE TO CAS WALKER episode will no doubt hit the mark for older hunters that remember Cas’ ads in Full Cry magazines over a span of many years. But everyone, no matter the age, should love the stories contained in this episode told by one of Cas’ closest associates, David West, a man that played in his tv show band and was his personal driver for many years. The stories are amazing! How Cas helped Dolly Parton get her start. How Cas fired the Everly Brothers from his show. How Cas lost a finger in a fight and retaliated by biting off his opponent’s ear. How he buried a man alive for 10 days in front of his store and how “Dog Dipping Day” grossed several thousands of dollars in grocery sales. And there’s the story of how Cas was the originator of the turkey drop stunt that became tv show WKRP In Cincinnati’s most famous episode. The story of Walker’s coon dog-selling technique alone is worth the listen and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Funny, funny stuff! We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 295EP 295: Gone To The Dogs, Triple S Threat
EFresh off their $100 K first place win in the Pro Sport extravaganza, the guys were ready to roll with candid answers to my sortedlist of questions. Smith the engineer, Strickland the greatest competition mind in the game, and Sizemore, the relative new comer with a $100 K win under his belt, reveal the inner workings of a team that’s become the force to be reckoned with when it comes to today’s game of exorbitant entry fees and enormous purses. Breeding, training, handling, dog work and travel are all on the table with Steve dealing the question cards. It’s a great episode with these key members of a cutting-edge team, honed to razor sharpness at the absolute highest levels of coon hunting competition. Big names, big personalities, big results. Owner Eric Henry and handler Steve Yant, each who hail from southeastern Missouri are veterans of the competitive coonhound circuit, having won prior National Championships. Yant is a two-time winner of the prestigious event. We talk about each hunter’s experience, some of the famous hounds they have owned and hunted, including two-time Super Stakes and one-time PKC Futurity winner Flatrock Thrasher. There’s a lot of meat on this bone and those that love to see hounds compete, want to know how the pros do it in the breeding pen, the training woods and out on the cast, and just have that ole hankering for some great coon dog conversation will enjoy this one for sure. Ep 291EP 291: Gone to the Dogs - Road Trip to Pennsylvania

He is currently hunting two Lone Pine-bred hounds and had lots of interest in and enthusiasm for the trip.Jessee recaps two nights of hunting with nine individual Treeing Walkers, all females, and has perfect recall of the events. The old friends talk about Fred’s recent hunts with fellow coon hunter Patty Bizitch, about treeing bears while coon hunting, about hunting spots where he maybe shouldn’t ought to go and the perennial summertime nemesis of coon hunters, snakes. Fred was in rare form for this one and Steve struggles to get a word in edgewise. But that’s fine because like fine wine, Fred’s stories get better and better with age. Held annually in Greencastle, Indiana, the annual competition consists of more than one thousand eligible coonhounds competing for the overall win.Our guest in this episode is Jeff Ricklefs, a former guest on this podcast, who emerged the overall champion with a Treeing Walker Coonhound owned by John Strickland and Doug Galbreath of Kentucky named Grand Nite Champion Strick’s Hardtimes Hobo. Ep 283EP 283: Gone To The Dogs with Adam Barnhart “Going It Alone”
“The morning Lilly joined us in camp, he had come on foot through the thick woods, followed by his two dogs, and had neither eaten nor drunk for twenty-four hours; for he did not like to drink the swamp water,” said Roosevelt. “It had rained hard throughout the night and he had no shelter, no rubber coat, nothing but the clothes he was wearing and the ground was too wet for him to lie on, so he perched in a crooked tree in the beating rain, much as if he had been a wild turkey.” - Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, describing his first meeting with hound-hunting legend Ben Lilly. Our guest this week typifies the Ben Lilly persona as much as any modern-day hunter in existence. A single man, a man that hunts his pack of Treeing Walker coonhounds bear and coon on foot in the rugged environs of southwest Virginia, and a man that hunts alone. Frequent guest Kesten Jessee introduced Steve to Adam Barnhart and the result is this interesting episode that we’ve sub-titled, Going It Alone. If you’ve wondered how Lily was able to travel the great southwest on foot, enduring incredible hardship in following his hounds, this episode will provide some insight. Although armed with modern electronics to aide in following the hounds, which is considerably better than Lily’s method of tying a hound to his belt to provide direction, the mere suggestion of bear hunting alone as does Barnhart, should pique the interest of anyone that has hunted bears with hounds under today’s considerably better conditions. Jason and the boys recap the hunt that produced a lot more than just a bobcat. It produced memories with family and friends that will last a lifetime and beyond. Ep 281EP 281: Gone To The Dogs with Chuck Pudil
ESteve Fielder’s Coon Hunting Conversations group page, overseen by his friend Alan Bridges of Georgia, is the most popular gathering spot for coon hunters on Facebook. With 10,600 members and an active weekly participation by nearly 8000, the site’s popularity lies in the “friendly conversation” concept that has been the mainstay of the group since its inception. Coon hunters share stories of their experiences, post photos and video clips of their dogs and offer help to fellow hunters on a wide range of dog-hunting topics without fear of reprisal by fellow members. One year ago, retired Army Lieutenant Charles Pudil of Alabama began to post hunting stories on the page and immediately gained a wide audience of readers. Steve found Pudil’s (pronounced Pew Dell) stories particularly entertaining and invited him to join in this conversation on Gone To The Dogs. If you enjoy Pudil’s stories on the screen, you’ll enjoy them in this episode even more. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. This one is full of tips for beginning or novice hunters and comes off as a good old-fashioned bull shooting session of the first degree. If you’re looking for the deep and profound, you may want to move along. If you want some coon talk without the frills, pull up a chair and pour yourself a long one. Much of the conversation centers upon the differences in Plotts and other hound breeds. This one covers breeding, competition and pleasure hunting and unveils the secrets that have made Shininger a successful breeder in a relatively short span of time. He was recently named the American Plott Association’s Coon Hunter of the Year. His stud dog Saddle Up Lazarus has twice been named Coonhound of the Year. Recker presents the story from a handlers perspective and reveals the passion and skillset that makes him a successful handler. If Plotts intrigue you, this one is full of answers. EIn this episode Steve takes the opportunity to discuss legislation and legislative issues that affect hound people across the nation and particularly in Utah and Michigan. Guests include Corey Huntsman, President of the Utah Houndsman Association an Mike Thorman, Legislative Director for the Michigan Hunting Dog Federation. Huntsman discusses the immediately pending threat of Utah HB469 that if signed into law, will decimate the cougar population in favor of protecting mule deer numbers. Increased seasons and lax regulation may leave the state’s houndsmen and women out in the cold when it comes to running their hounds.Steve calls upon veteran hunting dog defender Thorman for strategies and tactics to help hound people build strong offence and defense in the ever going battle to save our hounds.Every one that runs a hound, no matter the game pursued, needs to be active and aware. If nothing more, listen to this podcast and use the information to encourage friends that actually want to do something to protect, preserve, and promote hound hunting now and for future generations We would like to thank those who support this podcast. A trip to the first Leafy Oak field trial in 1927 is worth the listen. If trivia is your thing, this episode will have you hankering to turn back the clock to the pretty good old days. Ep 264EP 264: No GPS Signal-Tips From The Field
EToday Buddy and Jason talk with Rachae Stewart about her dogs recent “adventure” and give some tips and tricks to locate your dog even when there is no GPS. Sometimes you have to go a little bit old school with this new equipment when things go south. We hope you never have to use them, but just in case here are some tools to keep in your toolbelt. This episode is a true example of the special bond and determination of hound and Houndsman… or should we say Houndswoman. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 263EP 263: Gone To The Dogs Pup Training For Dummies
EBilly Dwyer of Slidell, Louisiana and Kesten Jessee of Lebanon, Virginia share a common goal; to finish a well-bred coonhound pup from scratch without help from other dogs. Both are accomplishing what they intended to do and this episode covers their stories.Billy’s hound Ruby is a Treeing Walker female and Kesten’s hound Clyde is a Treeing Walker male. Both are less than two years old and each of them had their owners often questioning their future outcomes. The boys discuss how they accomplished the goal of having each hound treeing raccoons on a regular basis and making their owners proud. This is a short list of basic steps that enabled the hunters to realize their goals. Each hound remains a work in progress but with more than one hundred coons treed to date, the plan is working to near perfection. This is an episode for the hunter that would rather have it his or her way than to purchase a hound created by someone else. Don’t let the title of this episode fool you. These guys know their stuff. Ep 261EP 261: Born 100 Years Too Late With Jim Buhler and Steve Smith
EThis week we have a great episode with Brett Vaughn that starts off with Brett's eyewhitness account of a lion picking its scent up and how the dogs reacted. We all speculate what happens out there when the dogs make a loose, but its not often you actually get to watch it happen. For the meat and potatoes of this episode Brett is joined by good friends and fellow dry ground lion hunters Jim Buhler and Steve Smith. Jim and Steve are a wealth of knowledge and great storytellers to boot! We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 260EP 260: Gone To The Dogs Story Hour
EAudible books, for many, are replacing hardcopy for many reasons but mainly for convenience. Hunters particularly enjoy the ability to listen while logging windshield time to and from the hunt. Testing the waters so to speak, Steve has chosen to read an essay from his book titled Time Travel. The piece spotlights Steve’s physical journey to the land of 1950’s author and self-proclaimed “perfect” hunter/houndsman Samuel J. Hunnicutt who wrote the cherished Twenty Years Hunting and Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains. Steve read the book in the 1950s and it remains one of his favorites.Additionally, Steve visits by phone with octogenarian coon hunter Fred Moran the Redbone Man to catch up on the night-hunting exploits of one of the sport’s oldest and most active hunters. The visit is vintage Moran with hunting stories and humor to burn. Want to hear the rest of Steve's story? Ep 257EP 257: Gone To The Dogs with Jim Meeks at the Grand American
EJim Meeks was, at his peak, known as one of the hardest hunters in the sport of raccoon hunting. He is most noted for his association with the Yadkin River strain of Treeing Walkers. He takes no credit for naming the strain but no man has hunted and promoted more of the famous dogs from the line. Hounds like Yadkin River Tom, Jeff, Champ, Chico, and Tar Rattler lace his conversations like rawhide on a well-worn pair of Irish Setters. Jim Meeks and Yadkin River Walkers are forever intertwined. Jim and Steve have been sharing conversations around the barns at the Grand American for over forty years. This episode is but the latest collection of coonhound-related chatter that flows when the two get together. Readers have enjoyed Jim’s writing in coonhound magazines through the decades as well. Never claiming to be a competition hunter, his Just Coon Hunting columns are ripe with some of the most entertaining stories to be found. Coon hunters wet behind the ears and long in the tooth alike will enjoy this episode recorded live at the largest annual gathering of coon hunters in the nation, the incomparable Grand American. Ep 255EP 255: Gone To The Dogs With The Coon Hunting Confidential Boys
EThis episode could be likened to a fur trapper’s rendezvous as Steve brings the dynamic trio of Daniel Felker, Ryan James and Dustin Faukner to the table in an end-of-day session that results in word-rasslin’ and yarn spinning and an hour and a half of mayhem and monkey business. The trio, a virtual Larry, Larry and Darrell combo of wit and wackiness, search out little furry forest animals, dogmen and cryptids, and the stories generated by same on a regular basis and serve them up on their weekly podcast titled Coon Hunting Confidentials on the Houndstooth Podcast Network, the creation of Felker.Fielder caught the show in the early days and became a big fan. He seized the opportunity to record with them on the evening of the first day of the Grand American Raccoon Hunt in Orangeburg, South Carolina, now in its 58th year, and this is the result.
