Ep 248EP 248: Gone To The Dogs with Burchel Davis Jr.

Steve and Kesten engage Burchel in a number of topics from discussing Phrogger’s ancestry, including the local and popular dogs that comprise his pedigree, to a discussion about local hunters that have come together to make the upper left corner of Ohio a hotbed for good hounds and equally good men that hunt them. This is the sequel to the episode we called The Phrogger Phenomenon and answers virtually every question listeners are likely to raise about the phenomenal hound from listening to the initial episode. Davis intimately knows his hound from its birth to the present and, without boasting, reveals all the components that comprise his truly remarkable hound. To borrow a much over-used phrase in podcasting, you’re not going to want to miss this one. Ep 246EP 246: Gone To The Dogs The Phrogger Phenomenon

The subject of the day is the phenomenal popularity of Burchell Davis’ Rosedale Phrogger, a four-year-old Treeing Walker with an impressive competition resume and a mouth that’s drawing coon hunters to the hound like mosquitos to a good dose of bug dope. The impressive part of the Phrogger story is the hound’s habit, on a consistent basis, of passing his coon-treeing ability and his indescribably loud and unique mouth on to his pups through what Steve calls the Phrogger Phenomenon. Each of the boys have some degree of experience with Davis’ Rosedale Phrogger or his offspring.Stark is hunting a 10-month-old pup for Davis and Kesten is starting a four-month-old Phrogger/Lone Pine-bred pup that he and Steve co-own. In each case, the boys come away being more than impressed with the results.Phrogger is on center stage on this one and it’s a story that can only be labeled as phenomenal, told by guys that have nothing to gain in the telling.Closing the podcast, Steve and Ella share the mike to extend warm Christmas wishes and lasting gratitude to Gone To The Dogs listeners everywhere. Ep 244EP 244: Gone To The Dogs with the Good, Bad and Ugly

E

The conversation involves coon hunting and has just enough canine nutrition and puppy rearing to quality the effort as time well spent. Some listeners require useful information in their choices of podcasts. For most, the conversation will qualify as an hour and half of typical dog talk by three guys with a combined history of 180 years of following hounds and a passion that has only grown stronger through the years. When you’ve gone to the dogs, it doesn’t matter how long it’s been. What really matters is that you enjoyed the trip. Ep 241EP 241: Gone To The Dogs Shenanigans

E

The account of Mark’s recent successful black bear hunt with hounds is a pretty cool listen as he describes the hunt turning western, putting him smack dab in the middle of a man-to-bruin smack-down. Let’s just say the 350-pounder turns the tables on Mark and the pack forcing our buddy to reach deep into his bag of woods-savvy and courage to stop the bear from reeking havoc on the pack. Yee haw!Kesten remanences about early hunts with some great hounds and both the boys talk about training pups. The subject of the Nite Hunts comes up with Kesten admitting his novice status and Mark presenting a veteran’s view. It’s an easy-going, hunting-camp sort of episode just right for the season. E

We welcome Kyle Dartnell to the DU lineup and are excited to hear even more from him and his guest! If you enjoy the episode, you may want to check out Jim's book "Path of the Puma". Ep 237EP 237: Gone To The Dogs For Thanksgiving

E

Mark is a veteran, having finished several Grand Nite Champions including his current Grand (2) Walker dog that has earned the prestigious titles in the woods and on the bench. He recently finished a thirteen-month-old Plott dog that he and Steve co-own to Dual Champion in UKC. Kesten is a young hunter that hunts as hard as anyone in the game and has a fifteen-month old coon treeing artist to show for the effort. He and Steve partner on an All Grand Track Man female that routinely requires a deep reach into the resource bag for answers to the questions she routinely inspires. The discussion is light-hearted and serves as an introduction to the boys as continuing members of the Gone To The Dogs broadcast team. This episode reveals why Steve chose Mark and Kesten as partners, both as trainer/handlers and as friends. This is an episode ripe with frank admissions of shortcomings as well as modest admissions of success. It’s an all-around good-time in an episode that will surely entertain.Thanksgiving is a special time to express our appreciation for our hunting buddies everywhere and that’s what this episode is all about. Ep 234EP 234: Gone To The Dogs On Two Legs With A Stick

This episode takes us to the Ozark Mountains of Missouri and Arkansas to visit with coon hunting legend Junior Lasseter. At 73 years of age, Junior has amazing recall of events that led him from the Ozark hills to the major stages of competitive coon hunting, in the woods and on the bench. At one time in coon hunting history, there were many commercial coonhound and combination dog kennels operating out of the Ozarks. Ads appeared in the classified sections of not only the tree dog publications but in major outdoor magazines as well. Writers like Wilson Rawls created a narrative that the Ozarks were the cradle of coon hunting in America. Lasseter’s stories emanate from the same root and place him as the perfect visitant to the Gone To The Dogs microphone. Lasseter has owned National Champions on the bench in both the UKC, PKC and ACHA registries and has a final four appearance in the UKC World Championship to his credit. He’s the first, and perhaps only handler to win a pickup truck showing hounds. Lasseter’s hounds like Table Rock Flying Hawk, Table Rock Mundo, Jr., Biggerstaff’s Little Buck, and Morgan’s Tree Jamming Mundar fill the conversations in this episode. Lasseter was known far and wide in the 80’s when Steve began his career at the UKC registry. This episode is smothered with Ozark flavor, like cathead biscuits under a blanket of fried squirrel gravy. You’ll enjoy Junior’s stories. You’ll want to follow them to the source, and you will, where mountain music echoes off the ridges and swells up from the cold stream hollers of tree dog country. It’s all right here so, enjoy! Ep 232EP 232: Gone To The Dogs with The President

Bear hunter Holt Collier, who was the guide for the famous “teddy bear” hunt that earned President Theodore Roosevelt his nickname, can lay claim to taking a sitting president bear hunting. That’s a distinction similar to that of our guest but not quite. Our guest Mark Israel of Smithfield, Georgia, took the 39th President of the United States coon hunting and not just once, but several times following the family friend’s term in office.Steve met Israel during his PKC days and Mark related to our host, several stories of his hunts with the peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia turned governor and ultimately president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. Carter’s famous farm in Plains sits a mere six miles from the Israel family’s homestead.Carter served the State of Georgia as its governor from 1971 to 1975 and the nation as president, from 1977 to 1981. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian work. This exclusive Gone To The Dogs podcast presents an interesting conversation involving hounds, coon hunting, secret service agents and an inside look at a man that once was the most powerful man in the world. Ep 229EP 229: Gone To The Dogs with Duel Murphy

This episode features a young hunter, both in years and in the number of years he has been involved in the sport. Like many young hunters, the lure of competition has been at the center of his involvement and he is known to be very successful at it.Duell Murphy of Huntington, Ind., is a major player on the major stage of competition coon hunting.Hunting dogs for Heather Island’s Ike Rainey, his earnings and those of the hounds he has handled have reached six figures and beyond. In this entertaining hour and a half, Steve talks to Murphy about his job with Heather Island, his early beginnings in the sport, the tragedy of losing a favorite hound and the near-death experience on a Texas highway that nearly ended, not only his career, but his life. This is one for the listener that watches the amazing changes in the world of coonhound competition, including astronomical entry fees and purses and wonders what it’s like to experience it all from the inside. Ep 227EP227: Gone To The Dogs For Breeder’s Only

E

Smith has built his breeding program on a nine to ten-generation, female-centered Lone Pine line-breeding effort. Using his females, he reaches out to tap a vast network of stud dogs that have been evaluated according to his standards. Smith discusses the criteria he uses in making the all-important decisions that result in his obvious success. Steve asks Smith why and how he comes to choose popular studs like Bone Collector, Coma’s Stylish Legend, All Grand Track Man and several others to augment his years of work with the Lone Pine females. This episode will be most appealing to those that either want to breed coonhounds successfully or are simply intrigued by hearing how Smith has chosen the right pieces to create a masterful program that is producing results for pleasure and competition hunters alike throughout the coonhound word. Ep 226EP 226: To Tone Or Not To Tone

E

If you ask 100 houndsmen, you usually get 100 answers. But the topic today usually only brings one of two answers with both sides being pretty set in their ways. To tone, or not to tone, that is the question. Will it kill a dog’s drive? Will it make them not want to tree? How will toning a dog off track or tree affect them down the road? The guys also go down a rabbit hole and do some talking on dogs homing abilities and following backtracks. Have your own point of view? Let us know!!! Ep 224EP 224: Gone To The Dogs with Bruce Janssen

Bruce Janssen of Otterbein, Indiana has devoted his life to training sporting dogs, both pointing dogs and hounds. Having hunted dogs for the public and for himself for most of his seventy-three years, Bruce has made a habit of studying the things that do and do not work in the realm of coonhound training.Steve and Bruce spend an hour and three-quarters talking about things like how dogs think differently than humans, how jealousy is a prime motivator in getting the switch flipped on a young project and how too much hunting can be as bad as too little.Sacred cows, pet training methods and popular ideas alike are fair game as the straight-talking Janssen, a standard-bearer among coon dog trainers, shares from his vast storehouse of coon dog experience and know-how. This is coon dog training spoken in a language coon hunters, regardless of level of experience, will appreciate and understand. Josh and Steve talk coonhounds and coon hunting and cover the trauma of losing a good hound, discuss coon conservation in an age when coons seem to be worthless from a monetary standpoint, and paint a picture of coon hunting in one of the most challenging areas of the country, an area with which both are intimately familiar. Josh talks about his current hounds and some pups in which he and boys are placing their future hopes and dreams. Ep 216Ep 216: Gone To The Dogs with Kesten Jessee

E

Steve sits down with a young man whom he believes to be the hardest hunter, for his age, of all the coon hunters he has met over his seventy years of following hounds. If it gets dark at close of day Kesten Jessee will be out there with his hounds. The amazing thing about this 28-year-old hunter is he is largely self-taught and his hounds are too. His success story revolves around his current hound Clyde, obtained as a four-month-old pup and trained with no help from other dogs, nor from released coons nor other popular methods. The dog has never had an e-collar on his neck and at fifteen months old, has treed more than one hundred coons in an area where coons are particularly scarce. Without letting the coon out of the crib, so to speak, let’s give a listen to an interesting interview with purist Kesten Jessee, coon hunter and dog trainer extraordinaire! This one is for those of you that are attempting to do it yourself. Ep 214EP 214: The Hunting Hound with Bear, Charlie and Nick

E

Today Bear is joined by Charlie and Nick to talk a bit about expectations, the definition of “trash” and the overabundance of “know it all’s” and the never-ending supply of advice from social media. Sometimes the owner is just as, if not more inexperienced than the dog and we should put just as much effort into novice handlers as we do the dogs. Good things come to those who wait and sometimes the best dogs just take a little work to get there. Ep 212EP 212: From Florida To Montana And Pile Of Game Between

Skip may have cut his teeth in the South, but the lions of Montana are his new found passion. Starting off as a youngster, Skip knew that he had a love for working dogs. Over the years as he grew so did his passion and experience in the dog woods. We have talked a lot in past episodes about the different requirements, and sometimes totally different dogs required to pursue a given species, but this is a great conversation with long time Houndsman that has ran everything from deer to hog, bear, lions and about everything in between. Pull up a seat and join us for some off the cuff "raw talk". If you want to check out the podcast episode that Skip and Jason mention with Aaron Kelly, make sure to check out "Whats Wrong When Everything Is Going Right?"https://podcast.dusupply.com/episodes/ep-182-whats-wrong-when-everything-is-going-right https://link.chtbl.com/5lrb67Ew We would like to thank those who support this podcast.  Special thanks to Double U Hunting Supply for sponsoring this episode.  www.dusupply.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@DoubleUHuntingSupply/podcasts

E

This week we start of in the mid-30’s with Dale taking a young man from Tucson out on a lion hunt in New Mexico. Dale also treats us with another great story of taking his old friend Doby out on his first Jaguar hunt down in Mexico, using an American outlaw as a guide. Plagued by a car breakdown in Mexico, Dale spends the night by himself in the desert and recalls the hoops that him and Doby had to go through to get a mechanic at about 25:00. With nerves of steel, Dale, his friend and their trusted hunting dogs track a jaguar into a cave and Doby to harvest his first jaguar. Ep 206EP 207: Gone To The Dogs with Nubbin Moore

E

As they contemplate the trip and all it will entail in the coming days, they take time to recall the Autumn Oaks 25th anniversary event in Jasper, Indiana in 1984, 39 years ago! Nubbin remembers well the years 1984, 1985 and 1986 when his Black and Tan Hank was declared National Grand Nite Champion of the Black and Tan breed in each of those years was overall winner in 1984. The boys talk about the upcoming trip to the White River National Wildlife Refuge in this episode and admit, with some remorse and no little trepidation that they are getting older and may be needing to seek younger hunters to join the trips going forward to assist in handling the dogs. They’re not there yet but that picture is obviously coming into view. The Gone To The Dogs podcast is nothing if not a candid discussion whomever the guest may be and this one is no exception. But true to form, the boys have a good time when they get together and that’s evident throughout the episode. We’re betting you’ll enjoy the stories and the banter in this latest account of Fielder and Moore On The Road. E

These three don’t get to catch up often, but when they do its usually good for a laugh or two. Buddy, Jason and Ron swap some great stories of “ground shrinkage”, misjudging game, and a crazy bear story from north of the boarder! If you like big bear stories this is one for you! We also talk some birddogs and get some tidbits of training tips from Ron to help Sadie out. Ron kindly suggests to Buddy that he should check out the new training course offered at DU Supply, The Upland Institute! If your thinking about a pup or need a refresher check this one out! Ep 205EP 205: Born 100 Years Too Late, Dale Lee 18

E

Today’s episode starts with a story from the 1930’s We have heard stories of ‘Ol Budwiser in previous episodes, but never like this! A Broken britchen sent Dale on a rodeo ride he will never forget. Not knowing how bad he was hurt, Dale gave himself a check over, checked for all his teeth and was back in the saddle a week later. A later event that did cause a trip to the Dr revealed the damage done by Ol Budwiser. Even after the abuse Dale still bought the mule but he was ready for his shenanigans. If you like trainwrecks and rodeos this episode will scratch the itch. Dale also recalls the night they called a Jaguar in a little too close for comfort. On a pale lit night, the nerves of steel Dale had gained over years of hunting shined through. Ill tell ya, chasing a Jaguar at night is enough to make anyone question their sanity. Ep 204EP 204: Gone To The Dogs with John Sturgill

E

It may have been a Walker dog world for many but deep in the cold-stream hollows and sandstone-faced cliff rows of southern West Virginia coal country, the Plott dog was king. Among recognizable names like King, Moore, Walker, Bolen, Wickham and even Fielder from that region, none reached the level of acclaim in the Nite Hunt game to match that of our guest, John Sturgill. Sturgill gained his well-deserved reputation through the exploits of his Grand Nite Champion Timberline Tack dog, followed by the Tack II and Tack III from subsequent generations. With three National Grand Nite Champion of Breed titles with Tack II and Taxi, and an in-your-face win as high-scoring male win at Southeastern Treeing Walker Days with Tack, Sturgill’s fame spread throughout the coonhound world. Now, at age 73, and with two knee and two hip replacements to his credit, Sturgill is still hunting and winning with his beloved brindles. Sturgill’s insight into training and his unique perspective on hunting Plotts compared to other breeds make this an interesting and entertaining hour and twenty minute visit with a hunter that, despite the Walker dog’s popularity, simply chose to march to a different drum.
