EP 350: Gone To The Dogs with James Oliver Laws

This episode is the first in a four-part series of interviews with James Oliver Laws whose father, Uncle Jimmy Laws, was the guide at the famed Hazel Creek bear camp where the Plott family, baseball legend Branch Rickey and other notables hunted for black bears before the Little Tennessee River was damned to create Fontana Lake in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Show Notes

James Oliver Laws provides many alternatives to the heretofore accepted accounts of the development of the Plott Hound in North Carolina.  Recorded with rudimentary equipment on the front porch of James Law’s home by Stewart Biesecker at Steve’s request, the interviews are a step back in time, illuminated by the amazing recollections of the story’s teller, Mr. Laws.

If you enjoy history and especially Plott Hound history, you are in for a treat.  The stories, some humorous, some eye-opening, and some perhaps blasphemous to those convinced of the accuracy of former accounts, will certainly be informative and no doubt entertaining.   With rockers squeaking on rough-sewn boards and traffic passing on the highway out yonder, you are fixin’ to sit a spell with an eye-witness to Plott dog history in this exclusive interview.  Enjoy.
