The Carolina Hurricanes dropped their third straight game, losing to Washington, 4-3, in a shootout. On the bright side, Seth Jarvis scored twice, his first goals in nearly two months. On the down side, the Canes have yet to beat the Capitals this season, and with a potential playoff match up with Washington it would be a good idea if they did, once. Morning After grinding one out over the Flyers
It was one of THOSE games. The kind where nothing really comes easy. And, in those games, it's the grinders who often come through. Steven Lorentz' 7th goal of the season -- his 3rd against the Flyers this year -- off a great feed from Derek Stepan started the scoring in the 2nd. Then it was Jordan Martinook's 3rd of the year, late in the 3rd, deflecting a Vincent Trocheck flip from the point past Philly goaltender Martin Jones. It all added up to a 3-1 win for the Hurricanes. It was Carolina's 4th straight win and sends them to Pittsburgh 8 points up on the Penguins in the Metropolitan Divisioin.

But, second period goals from Jordan Staal and Teuvo Teravainen gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. Then Nino Niederreiter and Vincent Trocheck scored 36 seconds apart in the opening two minutes of the 3rd period to hand the rest over to Frederik Andersen. Carolina's 76 points are the best in the NHL's Eastern Conference

Morning After an OT win in Philly
The Hurricanes were sluggish. Less than 24 hours after an emotional win in Pittsburgh, the Canes came out flat against a Philadelphia team that is buried in the standings. And, while Carolina never trailed in the game, they weren't exactly on top of their game. Still, thanks to 38 saves from first star Frederik Andersen, when Brett Pesce buried a Vincent Trocheck pass in OT the Hurricanes skated away with a 4-3 win.

It was an entertaining game. But, the Hurricanes came up a goal short in a 3-2 loss in Minnesota. Raanta hadn't started a game since New Year's Day in Columbus but you'd never know it based on his performance. Jordan Martinook has played just twice since early December but opened the scoring in the 1st period. Andrei Svechnikov added his 15th of the season to make it 2-0. But, it was not a vintage performance. Carolina fought it for the first 40 minutes and have Raanta to thank for escaping with 2 points for the night.

Canes shootout their way to two points in Ottawa

Then Andrei Svechnikov and Freddie Andersen got them across the finish line in the shootout for a 3-2 win over the Senators. Morning After a wild OT Finnish
Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov are going to be cornerstones of the Carolina Hurricanes for a long time. Tuesday night, they combined to spoil the Vegas Golden Knights' visit to Raleigh with the overtime tally in a 4-3 win. Aho's 18th and 19th goals of the season give him 44 points in 36 games. Andrei, who at one point went through a 12-game stretch with just 3 points, now has a 5-game streak in which he's had 2 points in each game. He has 15 points (5g, 10a) in his last 10 games, and has 36 points in 36 games this year. Tony DeAngelo has at least 1 point in 5 straight games, posting a goal and 8 assists in that span. Morning After hanging the college kid out to dry
The Carolina Hurricanes gave rookie goaltender Jack LaFontaine the start in New Jersey. They got off to a fast start with a pair of goals in the first six minutes. Then, most of the skaters took the rest of the night off as LaFontaine was left to fend for himself against a young, speedy, Devils squad with nothing to lose. Predictably, it didn't go very well. the Devils scored 7 of the next 9 goals and pulled away from the Canes.

Morning After parking the Rangers, 6-3

Dominant through two periods, the Canes led 5-1 en route to a 6-3 win and reclaimed 1st place in the division. Tony DeAngelo had a goal and two assists against his former team. Sebastian Aho scored his 17th goal of the year and recorded a pair of helpers as well and now has 4 goals and 10 assists in his last 4 games against New York. Freddie Andersen turned aside 31 shots for his second win over the Bruins this season.

Morning After rediscovering the mojo

Morning After getting trucked by Columbus
Turns out that playing just 5 times in nearly 4 weeks isn't a recipe for continued success. Canes had managed to get 7 points out of the previous four games. But, against Columbus, Carolina was only on the periphery of success. The Jackets blew open a 2-goal game with 3 markers in a 1:07 span of the 3rd on the way to a 6-0 win.
