Morning After McDavid
The Hurricanes were uncharacteristically sloppy and it cost them in Edmonton. Freddie Andersen gave the puck away for one goal, then the Canes allowed a shorthanded tally for the go-ahead goal in the 2nd period and the Oilers never looked back. It all wasted Andrei Svechnikov's first regular season hat trick. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Canes Corner: Where do the Canes rank in a stacked Eastern Conference?
Which teams got better and which went the other way in a loaded Eastern Conference. Join me and Michael Leboff of The Action Network. We'll discuss that, the Canes' place in the Metro and wonder if Nazem Kadri has already signed a free agent contract.

Are the Canes willing to take a hit to make a play?
The Carolina Hurricanes responded to the losses of Vincent Trocheck and Tony DeAngelo by acquiring former Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns from San Jose and Vegas' winger Max Pacioretty. In an "emergency" Morning After podcast, Adam Gold gives his thoughts on Burns, Pacioretty, Kase and why the Hurricanes haven't seemed willing to give to get on the trade front.

Bye bye, Tony D and a draft recap
The Hurricanes didn't have a 1st round pick. But, that doesn't mean they weren't one of the teams everyone was talking about at the draft last week. They dealt Tony DeAngelo to the Flyers for a trio of draft picks and then they went out and selected a fist full of Russian players. We'll talk roster and then get a breakdown of the draft class with Mark Seidel of North American Central Scouting.

Down on the farm
Let's take a glimpse into the (near) future for the Carolina Hurricanes. A chat with Jack Drury, who should man one of the center spots this season. Then we'll take a glance at the best prospects in the system with longtime hockey scout Mark Seidel. What is Drury's ceiling? How good are the goalies? Who else might be options for this year and beyond?

Wrapping it up with Civ and Lav

How Chuck Kaiton helped educate a new generation of NC hockey fans
We'd like to share a new podcast from 99.9 The Fan. We think you'll enjoy this episode of "A Brief History of Triangle Sports," hosted by Joe Ovies and featuring Chuck Kaiton. Thanks for listening. The Hartford Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes and moved to North Carolina in 1997. The Canes, as you know them today didn't instantly establish roots in the community. In fact, some fans outright dismissed the concept of hockey in the south and a good number of NC State fans resented having to share a new building with the franchise. Despite those early lean years for the franchise, former radio play by play announcer Chuck Kaiton never lost his enjoyment of the game and his desire to help grow the game with the broadcast. The payoff? A Stanley Cup winning broadcast where Kaiton tied the franchise's history together.

Morning After the final curtain
The Carolina Hurricanes had the best penalty kill in the NHL during the regular season. In the playoffs, however, they allowed 13 power play goals and bowed out in seven games to the New York Rangers. New York scored twice with the man advantage in the first 8 minutes of the 1st period to set the tone and the Hurricanes couldn't recover. For the series, the Rangers were 7 for 21 (33.3%) on the power play while Carolina was 2 for 18 (11.1%). In the end it proved too much to overcome.

Morning After the pattern continues
For the first time in the playoffs the Hurricanes lost because of their goaltender. Antti Raanta allowed a pair of soft goals in the first period and the Canes never caught up to the Rangers. It's the 13th straight time that the home team has won during the 1st two rounds of Carolina's playoff run. Carolina hopes that trend continues Monday night when they'll host Game 7 at PNC Arena.

Morning After the home cookin' continues
The Carolina Hurricanes scored shorthanded, at even strength and on the power play as they beat the Rangers, 3-1 at PNC Arena. Carolina takes a 3-2 series lead to Game 6 on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Vincent Trocheck started the scoring with a shorthanded goal in the first period. Teuvo Teravainen's power play goal made it 2-1 in the second. Then Andrei Svechnikov finished off the scoring with a breakaway goal through Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin as the Canes extended their home ice winning streak to 7 in a row. Now, if they can just snap their 5-game road losing skid...

Morning After the road woes continue
The Hurricanes got off to a bad start in New York and it led to a 4-1 loss in Game 4. The Rangers got the first two goals of the game to lead 2-0 after one period. The Canes had their chances in the second, but when you get those opportunities you have to take advantage. Carolina didn't, and it ultimately cost them Tuesday night. Game 5 is Thursday night at PNC Arena. The Canes did tie an NHL record with the first 11 games of their postseason all having been won by the home team. The last time that was done was the 1962 Maple Leafs, who went on to win the Stanley Cup. Maybe that's an omen. We'll see on Thursday.

Morning After getting Shesterkin'd in Game 3
The Hurricanes put 44 shots on Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin. But, only Nino Niederreiter's got through. And that is the anatomy of a playoff loss.

Morning After killing the Rangers' power play
Carolina's penalty kill has helped them win a lot of games this year. It won them Game 2 tonight. Brendan Smith banged home a Sebastian Aho pass for a shorthanded goal in the 2nd period and that was the only offense the Canes would need. Aho added an empty net marker with 1.8 seconds left to support Antti Raanta's 21 save shutout. Raanta's 1st ever postseason shutout raises his save percentage to a sparkling .939 in 8 games. Game 3 is set for Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

Morning After highway Raabery in Game 1
Ian Cole's 1st postseason goal in 6 years, at 3:12 of overtime, gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the Rangers in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Sebastian Aho's 3rd goal of the playoffs -- his first since Game 2 vs Boston -- got Carolina even with just 2:23 left in regulation. None of that would have been possible, however, were it not for the continued brilliance of Antti Raanta. Carolina's "backup" goaltender is playing like he has no intention of giving the crease back to Frederik Andersen. Raanta made 27 saves in the win and now has a save percentage of .933 in the playoffs. Game 2 is set for Friday night at 8:00

Canes Round 2 preview: Here come the Rangers
The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers open up their second round series Wednesday night at PNC Arena. Let's preview the series and talk playoffs with Linda Cohn of ESPN. Then, a conversation on how to wager on the playoffs with Michael LeBoff of the Action Network plus a chat with Carolina defenseman Brendan Smith. There's a lot inside.

Morning After moving past Boston
Max Domi picked a great time to score the first two postseason goals of his career as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Boston Bruins, 3-2, to take Game 7 of their Eastern Conference opening round series. Domi set up Teuvo Teravainen for a late first period goal to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. Then, the deadline acquisition from Columbus converted twice in the 2nd as the Canes hung on for the win. Jaccob Slavin had a pair of assists and Antti Raanta turned aside 27 shots to win his 3rd game of the series. Carolina awaits the winner of the series between the Rangers and Penguins in the 2nd round that is tentatively set to start on Tuesday in Raleigh

Morning After making a mess of Game 6
Canes' self-inflicted wounds send opening round series to a deciding seventh game on Saturday night. Carolina goes scoreless on 4 2nd period power plays, including nearly a minute of a 5-on-3, in the 5-2 loss. Andrei Svechnikov scored early in the 3rd to trim the Bruins's lead to 2-1, but back-to-back turnovers led to Boston goals and the Hurricanes never recovered. Svechnikov scored twice in the loss and Antti Raanta played very well in spite of allowing four goals. This will be the 6th Game 7 for the Hurricanes in their history, the first on home ice since the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals. Carolina is 5-0, all time, in Game 7's. If that matters.

Morning After turning the ship back around
The Carolina Hurricanes got back in the fast lane and beat the Boston Bruins, 5-1. Carolina now leads the best of seven series 3 games to 2 heading to Boston for Thursday's Game 6. Seth Jarvis scored twice, Tony DeAngelo had a goal and 2 assists and Antti Raanta turned aside 33 shots in the win. Jaccob Slavin's second goal of the playoffs got the scoring started. Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho combined for 5 assists. And, the One Line held Perfection off the scoresheet. It all added up to a Canes win.

Morning After a postseason parade to the penalty box
It was all going so well late in the 2nd period. The Carolina Hurricanes held a 2-1 lead on the strength of Brett Pesce and Jordan Staal goals. But, then the penalty parade started and the Canes could not survive. The Bruins tallied once late in the 2nd to even the score. Then picked up another at 5-on-3 early in the 3rd to take the lead. Brad Marchand scored that go-ahead goal and had a 5-point night as the series shifts back to Raleigh tied 2-2.

Morning After Boston got up off the matt
Charlie Coyle's shorthanded goal in the first period sparked the Boston Bruins to a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3. David Pastrnak and Taylor Hall each scored power play goals as the Bruins dominated the special teams battle in trimming Carolina's lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Vincent Trocheck and Jaccob Slavin each had goals for the Hurricanes who started rookie Pyotr Kochetkov in goal. Game 4 is Sunday afternoon at 12:30.

Morning After the Canes got stronger
The Bruins tried to rattle the Hurricanes' cage in Game 2. Early in the 1st period David Pastrnak skated into Antti Raanta, injuring the Carolina goalie. But, that just got the Canes angry. The response? A 5-2 win and a 2-0 series lead. Jesper Fast broke the ice with his first goal of the playoffs. Sebastian Aho and Nino Niederreiter each scored twice and Tony DeAngelo and Jaccob Slavin combined for 5 assists as the Canes take a 2-0 series lead to Boston for Games 3 (Friday) and 4 (Sunday). We'll see if there's a Game 5.

Morning After Raanta answered the bell
Antti Raanta held the Bruins at bay for the first 36 minutes, then Carolina's offense took over in a 5-1 win to take Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Seth Jarvis broke the ice with 3 1/2 minutes left in the second period, His redirect of Jaccob Slavin's point drive found its way through Linus Ullmark staking the Hurricanes to a 1-0 lead. Nino Niederreiter made it 2-0 1:50 later and the Canes would score 3 more times in the third period. Raanta made 35 saves in his first career playoff start. His second should come on Wednesday at PNC Arena.

Morning After a big Finnish
The Carolina Hurricanes closed out the regular season with a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had a goal and two assists and Antti Raanta made 27 saves as Carolina finished off the regular season with franchise records for wins (54) and points (116). Next up, either the Boston Bruins or Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Morning After putting a bow on the Metro
The Carolina Hurricanes rode their 22-year old rookie to a 4-3 win at Madison Square Garden. The 2 points puts the Canes over the top in the Metro, their second division crown in as many years as the Hurricanes won the Central Division a year ago. Vincent Trocheck, Jordan Martinook, Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho each scored in the win. The Canes will close out the regular season on Thursday night at home against the Devils.

Morning After another "next man up"
The Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders Sunday, running their winning streak to four games and opening up a 4-point lead in the Metropolitan Division. However, not all the news is good as they also lost goaltender Antti Raanta to an injury in the 2nd period. While Pyotr Kochetkov played well, winning for the second straight time, he might have to be the starting goaltender when the Hurricanes open up their Stanley Cup playoff run. Max Domi netted the game-winner, and Seth Jarvis scored for the 9th time in his last 19 games.

Morning After the New Jesey Rally

Morning After the Canes fly past the Jets, 4-2.
After the first 38 minutes, the Hurricanes were down 2-0. But, Teuvo Teravainen's late second period power play goal ignited a 4-goal rally as the Canes beat Winnipeg, 4-2, at PNC Arena. Carolin keeps pace with the Rangers who beat the Islanders Thursday night. By winning, Carolina clinches home ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs as the Penguins are 9 points behind the Hurricanes with just four games left. Carolina next plays Saturday afternoon in New Jersey.

Morning After getting out of Arizona with 2 very important points
With Jordan Staal sitting out the game against Arizona, Max Domi filled in and picked up where Jordan left off. The newcomer filled Staal's spot centering Nino Niederreiter and Jesper Fast and that line combined for 3 goals and a pair of assists in the win. Domi's tally made it 3-0 in the second period. It was his first with the Hurricanes and the 100th of his career. Vincent Trocheck scored his 20th of the season, the 4th time he's done that in his career.. Sebastian Aho scored his 36th goal of the season, 2 shy of his career high to close out the scoring and help along Antti Raanta to his 13th win of the year. The Hurricanes will fly back to Raleigh on Tuesday, practice Wednesday, and then prepare to take on the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday at PNC Arena.

Morning After losing more than a game
The Hurricanes fell behind 4-0 22 minutes into their game with Colorado. However, behind a pair of second period goals from Jordan Staal, the Canes actually made a game of it before falling, 7-4. Bigger than the loss and the 7 goals allowed, however, were late 3rd period injuries to Andersen (lower body) and the Captain. As good as Freddie has been all year, if Staal has to miss significant time, the offseason will arrive far sooner than anyone wanted. Carolina is off tomorrow before skating in Arizona on Monday against the Coyotes.

Morning After being haunted by an old friend
Alex Nedeljkovic made 46 saves as the Red Wings beat the Hurricanes, 3-0, at PNC Arena. Carolina's lead in the Metropolitan Division is trimmed to 2 points over the Rangers who will host Detroit on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Canes will try and get back to winning in Denver against the potent Colorado Avalanche that evening. The Canes beat the Avs, 2-0 last month.

Morning After closing the door (for now) on the Rangers
The Hurricanes yielded the first goal in their showdown with the Rangers. But, they scored the next three and now 4 points separate Carolina and New York atop the Metropolitan Division standings with 8 games to play. Andrei Svechnikov, Seth Jarvis, Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho each scored. Aho added a pair of assists, including the primary helper on Jarvis' 14th goal of the year as the Canes took round 3 of this 4-round bout with the Rangers. They'll be back at Madison Square Garden for the penultimate game of the regular season hoping that it won't matter to playoff seeding. Freddie Andersen was very good and the Carolina penalty kill was 4 for 4 against the 2nd best power play in the NHL.

Morning After the hats come out for The Captain
The Carolina Hurricanes needed a bounce-back effort after Friday's loss to the Islanders. And, they could use some confidence heading into Tuesday's Metro showdown with the Rangers in New York. Jordan Staal, saw to it that those goals would be met. The Captain scored three times, ringing up his first hat trick in almost 10 years -- and the first for the Hurricanes this season -- in a 5-2 win over the Ducks. The Canes head to Madison Square Garden with a 2-point lead over the Rangers with 9 games left to play.

Morning After being deflated by the Islanders
Carolina wasn't good enough to beat the Islanders. But, they were less than 20 seconds from sneaking out at least one point after Vincent Trocheck's 19th goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 with 56.8 seconds to play. But, Kyle Palmieri won a battle behind the net and beat Frederik Andersen up high giving New York a 2-1 win. The Canes host the Ducks on Sunday as they try to maintain a division lead over the Rangers.

Morning After the Captain steered his team into the playoffs -- again.
It seemed like it was going to end up as it did Tuesday in Buffalo. The Hurricanes were a bit of a mess, The Sabres were making them pay for their mistakes and it was 3-1 late in the 2nd period. But, Teuvo Teravainen's goal got them within a goal heading to the third. From there, it was the Captain behind the wheel. Jordan Staal tied it 5 minutes into the 3rd, then after Sebastian Aho's second of the night made it 4-3, Staal iced it into the empty net for a 5-3 win. Antti Raanta made 18 saves for the win, which means that he was the goalie of record as the Hurricanes clinched a playoff spot for the 4th straight season.

Morning After snoozing through the second in Buffalo
Carolina fell to Buffalo, 4-2, missing a chance to clinch a fourth straight playoff spot. Carolina led 1-0 after the first period, but mistakes hurt the Canes the rest of the way. Jesper Fast and Nino Niederreiter each scored for the Hurricanes who return home to play Buffalo again on Thursday. A win clinches a playoff spot.

Morning After getting beat by a Hall of Famer
Carolina threw a lot of rubber at Marc-Andre Fleury. But, there's a reason he's headed to the Hall of Fame as soon as he's eligible. 37 saves later, the Hurricanes were stuck with a 3-1 loss. Carolina's magic number remains at 4 to clinch a playoff spot.

Morning After stepping on Montreal early
Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen each had a goal and an assist. Andrei Svechnikov scored twice, including into an empty net and Freddie Andersen steered aside 32 shots as the Canes beat the Canadiens, 4-0. Carolina is 4 points away from clinching a playoff spot as they raise their record to 45-15-8 with 14 games to play.
