it runs DOOM but can you use cheats? YES

answering a few questions about our tiny lil DOOM & emulator-playing device we designed and prototyped this weekend...one question is does it play sega and the answer is YES! there's an SMS emulator and we loaded up sonic just fine. second question is how to enter in 'keypress' cheats - answer is that they are accessed and enabled through the options menu. so if you want a BFG on level 1, you can haz it! https://adafruit.com/doom #adafruit #doom #cheats Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI - 3M VHB Adhesive Tapes

This week's EYE ON NPI is going to stick with you for a looooong time - it's 3M's VHB Tape (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/vhb-tape-5906) also known as "the tape you use when you want it to stick together forever". This tape is the stuff of legend - it's incredibly thin but strong, easy to apply and gives you near-epoxy-level strength in seconds. 3M VHB tape consists of a durable acrylic adhesive with viscoelastic acrylic foam. This provides an extraordinarily strong double-sided foam tape that adheres to a broad range of substrates, including aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel, composites, plastics, acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, and painted or sealed wood and concrete. Our bonding tapes provide excellent shear strength, conformability, surface adhesion, and temperature resistance. They are commonly used in applications across a variety of markets, including transportation, appliance, electronics, construction, sign and display, and general industrial. Reliably bonds a variety of materials with strength and speed for permanent applications. Seriously - we've seen it easily attach to metals, wood, plastic, rubber and it wont dry out and peel off like most foam tapes. It's super strong, to the point we often feel kinda weird when we use it because don't expect such incredible tensile strength. You can even build a push-scooter that is kept together just by VHB Tape as seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxJ-kU6Z8GY. It's double sided tape. but its sticky enough you cant just have it on a reel like office double-sided tape. Each reel comes with a smooth plastic layer in between - we suppose this is the one material it doesn't stick to very well. Clean both halves with 50/50 IPA. Carefully apply it while still on the plastic reel and then remove the protector. Now press the other half you want stuck together. Wait up to 3 days for max hold strength, but it's pretty darn strong instantaneously. This VHB is VHC (Very Heckin' Cool) and extremely useful when you just want to attach this-to-that, no matter what material or environment. You can get this in sheets (!!) and rolls at Digi-Key. We are partial to the 5 yard 1/2" wide roll which has just enough to be useful (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m-tc/1-2-5-5906/5039231) but there's also a 1" wide version (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m-tc/1-5-5906/5039233) and we picked up one of each. Whatever 3M VHB tape (https://www.digikey.com/short/bvq23nw9) style you're looking for, Digi-Key has them in stock for immediate shipment. Order today and you can be stickin' this-to-that by tomorrow afternoon!

gnuboy gameboy emulator test passes!

after nofrendo/NES emulation, the next one we tried is 'gnuboy' which is a gameboy (color) emulator. we remember getting a gameboy when they came out, it was absolutely amazing to play tetris anytime we wanted. really chewed through nicad batteries tho - we had to have one set charge while we played. anyways, gnuboy works a treat and maybe we'll finish super mario world again (there was a submarine, right?) #adafruit #gameboy #retro Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

It's no fun till nofrendo is running!

from ladyada "we had a lot of success with our retro-go port (even submitted a PR) and now we've got the NES emulator 'nofrendo' working. we're reaaaaally familiar with this emulator, having ported it to the SAMD51 a few years ago (see https://learn.adafruit.com/nes-emulator-for-arcada for deets). its a fairly portable emulator that can run many games. we popped in a micro SD card with a bunch of roms and had a go at playing some of our fav NES games: kid icarus, arkanoid, tetris and of course dragon warrior - which was the first rpg game i played on a console and was totally amazing (and paved the way for jrpgs like final fantasy, xenogears, legend of gaia, etc) i still think about farming those steel slimes... anyways! since the ips 1.3" tft is 240x240 pixels it does a pretty good job of being smol but fitting the 256x240 native resolution. you can either scale the output, or drop some pixels on the left and right. with audio and playback working this may the the smallest pixel-perfect nes gaming emulator ever made :) " #adafruit #nofrendo #retro Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Final power draw tests for QT Py ESP32 Pico

After all the functionality has been worked out with a new boards, its time to do last power draw checks to make sure that low power functionality is verified. historically, we haven't cared too much about low power uses - stuff would be plugged into a 9V adapter anyways. but in the last couple of years we've tried to make whatever small changes we could to make our boards work well in deep sleep. this qt py esp32 pico can get down to 70uA which is pretty good! that means the cp2104 and neopixel are not drawing current. given we don't have a 32khz crystal on board, we think this is as long as it gets! #adafruit #esp32 #pico Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Desk of Ladyada - What is this, a gameboy for ants?!?!?

This week we put together our first QT Py accessory board which turns the diminutive board into a tiny gaming platform with 10 buttons, a TFT screen, micro SD card, and headphone out. The PCBs showed up late last week so we quickly soldered one together and we pretty much got it going! then we ported arcada to it (that's our Arduino button/display library) so that we could do basic tests on the hardware. finally we spent friday and saturday on getting retro-go to work so we could use it as an emulator for nes/gameboy/sms/doom/etc. most of that was picking the right idf, learning how to work with CMake and doing the hardware port to support the i2c gpio expander. making the smol-est emulation gamer - part 1

we're taking a short break from floppy disk hacking (don't worry, we're nowhere near done and this will all tie together - promise!) and working on a QT Py gamer backpack we designed. the qt py esp32 pico here plugs into the back to drive the 240x240 IPS display with an SD card slot, battery charging, and an AW9523 GPIO expender for all the buttons. we wanted to make a very smol odroid go-like since that hardware had a ton of support. we've found a great open emulation project with a LOT of emulators supported and a very easy-to-understand structure at https://github.com/ducalex/retro-go so we're having a 'go' at porting it over! we had to use esp-idf 4.2 and this is the first time we've used raw idf and...we really like it! ninja is such an incredibly fast compiler and we like the 'flash n monitor' helper. so far we've got the chip booting and the tft is kinda coming up, just need to tweak the init for the st7789 instead of ili9341. #adafruit #gaming #emulator Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Archiving Mac 800kB 💾 disks with Adafruit Feather & fluxengine

jepler picked up some retro Apple floppy disks online. With Adafruit_Floppy and the Adafruit fork of fluxengine, they read out the data and loaded it in a Mac emulator. What a blast from the past, dithered "screen posters" using After Dark technology & comic book artwork. Not all drives can read Mac floppies, a Sony drive worked but a Panasonic didn't. #arduino #floppy #retro #fluxengine @jeffepler ----------------------------------------- Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Oooh our QT PY ESP32-S3 is up and running!

About a week ago we re-spun our ESP32-S2 QT Py into an ESP32-S3 version (the chips are very very similar but NOT drop in compatible!). we just got the PCBs in last night and threw one of these together. compared to the S2, the S3 adds a second core back, and adds BLE as well. while there is no arduino support yet, we do have preliminary CircuitPython support! good enough to test each pin, the analog inputs, i2c control of a display and even connect to wifi to grab some data. there's still more to go but we've got the hardware in a state that's good enough to try and order our first set of PCBs for assembly. #adafruit #esp32 #qtpy Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: Small 'cap-less' headphone driver

For our tiny handheld gamer board, we want to have a headphone driver that does not require a lot of board space. Even if the chip is small, most simple amplifiers require output blocking caps to avoid DC bias on the speakers. But, now-a-days, you can get 'cap-less' drivers that generate a faux-ground. This makes for a very tiny board. Let's find a chip that is small, but not BGA/CSP, that will fit nicely into our design See on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/0b3v2192 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/

The Desk of Ladyada - 5.25" Floppy Drive hacking!

This weekend we dove headfirst into getting fluxengine and our 5.25" disk drive working with the floppy featherwing. good news is that we were able to add support to Adafruit_Floppy and with a little refactoring, add 360K disk MFM decoding. we thought we didn't have any DOS floppies but we did find one in a pile (mouse driver). we then used fluxengine to read the data off to verify before implementing mass storage support. once we got that working we spent a few hours on C64 disk reading, these disks are kinda odd and not formatted like 'normal' diskettes - there is a different encoding scheme and variable sectors per track! we also designed a feather esp32 v2 and a smol handheld game BFF for QT Py. The Great Search - small 'cap-less' headphone driver https://www.digikey.com/short/0b3v2192 For our tiny handheld gamer board, we want to have a headphone driver that does not require a lot of board space. even if the chip is small, most simple amps require output blocking caps to avoid DC bias on the speakers. but, now-a-days you can get 'cap-less' drivers, that generate a faux-ground. this makes for a very tiny board. let's find a chip that is small, but not BGA/CSP, that will fit nicely into our design #deskofladyada #thegreatsearch #adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

5.25 inch 360K DOS Floppy drive as a USB key

5.25 inch 360K DOS Floppy drive as a USB key with fluxengine support out of the way, we're on to refactoring our adafruit_floppy library code to support this old-fangled 360K double-density disk http://fileformats.archiveteam.org/wiki/PC-DOS_360K_format this format was pretty common back in ze day. it's not too different from our more common 3.5" 1.44MB in that it has MFM encoding, two sides and FAT12 formatted. but it does have a quarter of the capacity as it has half the tracks (40 not 80) and half the sectors (9 not 18). so, a little refactoring this afternoon and now our USB mass storage example is happy to make this drive appear as a 360KB USB drive. we can access the files just fine - this may be the first time someone's developed a USB MSD controller for these older disks, it's like a really really heavy usb key :) #floppy #usb #retro Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

OK after much fluxengine hacking (wherein we wrote a bunch of code, then ended up deleting all but like 4 lines) we have it successfully interfacing with the adafruit_floppy 'greaseweazle compatible mode'. we can now use both tools to read and parse flux data which is great as fluxengine has a bunch of formats it supports. we did find one MFM 360K DOS disk in our collection - so we are able to verify that chunky floppies work just as well as 3.5"s. this is one good example of why we cant 'just use a USB floppy drive' - there is no 5.25" usb floppy drives (yet). after imaging this disk we found some classic mouse driver content - including an exciting new concept in Mouse control! pull request submitted to fluxengine https://github.com/davidgiven/fluxengine/pull/415 and adafruit floppy is here https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Floppy #adafruit #retro #fluxengine Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

floppy hacking - fluxengine software support

we're poking at our 5.25" disk drive and we'd like to get it working with our Adafruit_Floppy code so we can read older diskettes. we can't find our DOS formatted floppies at the moment, we could probably just pop those in and run the USB-floppy interface code to have it show up as a drive. buuuut, we happen to only find our apple ][ and c64 diskettes so far. whoops! well, this is good incentive to get fluxengine support working - it's an alternative to greaseweazle and seems to support more formats including c64 disks that are gcr instead of mfm encoded. fluxengine has greaseweazle support so it should 'just work' right? well turns out we had a few sticking points to getting data read working via the low level win32 com port interface with the CDC class driver (did you know you MUST set dtr? this cool tip could save you 4 hours). now that we're over that hurdle we can sew up the rest of the interfacing tweaks to get fluxengine working! #adafruit #floppy #commodore Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

parsing and accessing floppy FAT filesystem in arduino

having converted MFM pulses to sectors, you may be surprised to know its only a couple lines of code to have a microcontroller access the disk and underlying file structure. we use SdFat library, an SD card interface library that is really good, and subclass it to provide new functions for reading (and later, writing) sectors. then you can just treat the drive like a very small SD card. why does this work? turns out SD cards are pretty much the same as extremely large floppy drives: blocks of data are 512 bytes each, and both are formatted with the same kind of filesystem structure called FAT that was invented in 1977 for floppies but persists to this day. SdFat supports a particularly early and compact version called FAT12 and even does long filenames. now our arduino programs can access files on floppy drives with ease! #arduino #floppy #adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

got some esp32 pico modules in and they're smol!

we got some samples of the esp32 pico v3 02 modules in from Espressif and they're smaller than we expected! we thought they were the same size as the esp32-s2 mini modules we've been using but they're actually a bit smaller in each direction. that actually works out to our advantage because it means it can fit on an itsybitsy sized board (the mini modules cannot, too wide!) so this could be a good candidate for an esp32 itsy' that comes with 4MB of flash and 2MB of PSRAM. probably needs to have double sided but i think we can work it out. #esp32 #pico #esp32s2 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
