The Great Search: Miniature Ferrite Core Ring (Toroid)

We were flipping through a cool old book on how computers were made and there was a section on 'core memory'. This is how data was stored dynamically on computers before capacitive-based RAM. Instead of storing a charge on a transistor's gate, the flip of a ferromagnetic core in a grid could store a single bit. Some folks make core memory for fun now - you just need some enameled wire and miniature ferrite cores! EYE on NPI – TDK AVD Series Low-Profile Pressure Transmitters

This week's EYE ON NPI can make a big difference in how fast you get temperature and differential pressure data into your next design - it's TDK's AVD Series Low-Profile Pressure Transmitters (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/epcos/avd-series-low-profile-pressure-transmitters). They're all-in-one, ready-to-use temperature and pressure modules with ports, analog management circuit and a simple I2C interface that can quickly integrated into any microcontroller or microcomputer product. These are differential pressure sensor modules: that means they will be able to measure the positive or negative difference between two ports. Very handy when you just need to know how an internal cavity pressure measures up against outside air pressure. A common use case for these sorts of sensors is HVAC systems with filters to keep dust and debris out of the system where it could clog the motors or make air dirty. The filters eventually fill with dirt (https://www.flickr.com/photos/ivydawned/4020166274/) and the HVAC has to spend more and more energy to push the air through the clogged filter. While maintenance staff could check the filters weekly, for a large building that could get very time consuming. Instead, a sensor like this one could measure the differential pressure once a day and notify staff when the change increases past some threshold. We like the small, fully-integrated design of this sensor. There's a nice plastic enclosure, two barbed ports, and dual JST SH 5-pin (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/SHR-05V-S/759884) connectors that can be used for I2C connectivity. These aren't quite STEMMA QT connectors, but we were able to fashion a simple adapter for a demo. The I2C interface is very simple: there's no register map, just read 4 bytes over I2C and perform some simple calculations to determine temperature and pressure. We were able to throw together some Arduino code to read data and display it on an OLED in under an hour. The sensor comes in three varieties: 1.6kPa, 10kPa and 700kPa ranges (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/epcos/avd-series-low-profile-pressure-transmitters). The code and wiring is the same for all three, you can just change the range multiplier depending on which one you've got. Finally, for fast mechanical integration, there's a well-detailed dimensional drawing and a STEP 3D file with all the elements rendered in color. While this module is more expensive than a raw analog differential piezo pressure sensor - having the device packaged, linearized and digitized makes it very easy to integrate and install. And you can tell they did a really great job making this a quality sensor module! Best of all, all three versions of the TDK AVD Series Low-Profile Pressure Transmitters are in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment (https://www.digikey.com/short/90n7wrj5). Take the pressure off of yourself, and order today - you'll be able to add a professional quality, ready-to-install differential pressure sensor by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: 16 Bit Digital Analog Converter (DAC)

Adafruit received a request over email for a 16-Bit resolution DAC to match with the 16-Bit ADC we stock (ADS1115). Not a bad idea! ESP32-S3 Feather (redux)

we spent today working on a ESP32-S3 feather. you may be thinking "hey wait didn't you already design one?" yep! but we had a hardware bug that increased deep-sleep power, and so we wanted to revise the ESP32-S2 feather first to fix it since the PCBs for the two designs are shared. now we have the new ESP32-S2 in the shop with the fix https://www.adafruit.com/product/5303 so we can respin the S3. even better, Espressif has started adding S3 support in a branch so we were able to test the GPIO, I2C, UART, NeoPixel, low power, and WiFi capabilities successfully. We've got a PR open to add this new board - it's very exciting! https://github.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/pull/6450 This board uses the only S3 mini module available right now, with 8 MB of Flash and no PSRAM. however, there's more SRAM on the S3 than S2 so its still very usable. when the PSRAM-containing mini module comes out we'll make a version with that too. This week we've been working on more and more revisions and also trying to get some older designs out the door. For example, we've got some ESP32-S3 feather and QT Py designs that we didn't release due to some errors and also S3 support in the world wasn't quite ready. But with our revised S2 design done, we swapped out a board on the panel with an S3 mini module and there's even Arduino support in espressif's esp32 branch. Let's maybe go through how we add support for a new ESP32 board together. Also, a transparent OLED sample arrived, it looks very cool! EYE on NPI – Murata SCL3300 Series 3-Axis Inclinometer Switch

We're inclined to think you'll love this week's EYE ON NPI, since it's the Murata SCL3300 Series 3-Axis Inclinometer (https://www.digikey.com/short/9pqpb9z3), a really unique and useful sensor that can be very useful for industrial and robotic applications. Inclinometers measure...incline! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inclinometer) That is, the angle of tilt of the sensor and the platform it's placed on. This is useful when you want to make sure something is perfectly straight or flat with respect to the center of Earth's mass. If a robot or piece of construction equipment isn't perfectly level, errors can build up and construction projects can end up with big flaws, gaps or repairs. Not good! Now experienced engineers (including ourselves, before we researched this part) may be wondering: wait, if you're measuring tilt with respect to the earth, why not just use an accelerometer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerometer)? Accelerometers measure acceleration, and gravity is an acceleration force everything on Earth is affected by, so you can easily do some math on the number of g's measured by an accelerometer and convert that into tilt with a little math as shown by this detailed ST app note (https://www.st.com/resource/en/application_note/an4509-tilt-measurement-using-a-lowg-3axis-accelerometer-stmicroelectronics.pdf) So why have a special sensor called an inclinometer, and why does it cost much more? Well, accelerometers can be used for rough tilt calculations, but they're not really designed for it. They tend to be used for 'gross motion detection' like taps, jerks, big angles. For that reason many everyday accelerometers are maybe 10 to 12 bits of precision (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=accelerometer&sort=BestMatch) and +- 2g to +-16g. That's fine for motion detection, but not precise enough for minute changes in tilt, where only a few mg of change in gravity can affect the angle. So you can think of an inclinometer as a special type of accelerometer, with very low g rating, and very very high accuracy (how close the reported value is to reality) and high precision (how many digits you can squeeze out of the measurement) So for example, a common accelerometer may have, at +-2g a precision of 1mg per LSB, whereas the SCL3300 in inclination mode has a precision of 12000 LSB/g (which is 12 LSB/mg and 0.08 mg/LSB). The noise density on a common accelerometer is about 220 μg/√Hz, on the SCL3300 is as little as 15 μg/√Hz The temperature and offset stability are also going to be much better. Basically, its very very precise, but not designed for moving fast - that's what a high g accelerometer would be for! For detection of small changes, or small angles, the Murata SCL3300 Series 3-Axis Inclinometer (https://www.digikey.com/short/9pqpb9z3) will do the job much better than an accelerometer, with a simple SPI interface that will integrate quickly with any microcontroller or microcomputer. We especially like that the SPI interface has CRC and error monitoring, important for critical installations. And for such a precise sensor, the price is very good as well! The sensor is available on an easy-to-use eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/murata-electronics/SCL3300-D01-PCB/11618562) if you want to start prototyping fast. Adafruit's Floppy board writes Apple II Floppies using a standard PC floppy drive

Jeff Epler recently contributed code to FluxEngine making it possible to write Apple II disks using a FluxEngine-compatible floppy interface, such as the prototype Adafruit Floppy board. In this demo, jepler uses a standard PC 5.25" floppy drive (TEAC model FD-55GFR) connected with the Adafruit Floppy board to write a floppy disk with a classic educational game downloaded from archive.org: Number Munchers. Previously we've demonstrated how using the Adafruit Floppy interface you can read and write disks for PC and Commodore 64, and also read disks for Mac including crunchy old 400kB and 800kB floppies, which PCs have traditionally been unable to read. EYE on NPI – Bourns PEC11D Series Dual-Centric Rotary Encoder with Momentary Push Switch

This week's EYE ON NPI is a gaze into the duality of man! Wait, no, it's a gaze into the dual-concentricity of this fascinating new rotary encoder: the Bourns PEC11D Series Dual-Centric Rotary Encoder with Momentary Push Switch (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bourns/pec11d-series-dual-centric-rotary-encoder-with-momentary-push-switch). We have covered rotary encoders and switches on EYE ON NPI before (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=eye+on+npi+rotary) so you may be familiar with them. Rotary encoders are a popular user interface element that engineers use to add a tactile increment/decrement control. We find they’re much more intuitive to use than touch screens, especially when you want to increase or decrease a value precisely: it's a lot easier to twist the knob by one detent than it is to press a touch screen once. Rotary encoders can also be used hands-free or when observing some output because the tactile feedback is strong. The most common rotary encoders used for user input are mechanical style, usually with detents. They can be ring-style like the famous iPod Clickwheel or knob style. These are two mechanical rotary encoders in that there is a little leaf spring connected to the knob and the “common” pin, and the body has a metal-cutout piece, that when rotated connects and disconnects the two side pins from the common. The two pins pulse high and low to indicate motion and direction. Usually two interrupt pins are connected to the rotary encoder to catch the pulses and track the counter increment or decrement. Say you have some product you're designing and you want to have two encoders in one, say because you want 'rough' and 'fine' adjustment. You could use one encoder and have the button state determine what mode the encoder is in. (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Learning_System_Guides/blob/main/Rotary_Trinkey/CircuitPython_ColorPicker_Example/code.py) However, there may be a situation where you want to use that button for entering the new setting. Or if you have a very space-constrained interface, and you can't fit two side-by-side. That's where the Bourns PEC11D (https://www.digikey.com/short/013h5701) will come to the rescue! This encoder has two (count 'em two) rotary encoders in one package. By turning the outer or inner part separately you can control two electrically separated rotary encoders, and there's also a push-button input. You'll need to mould or machine a special knob to allow selection of either half, but most folks end up with custom knobs rather than off-the-shelf for a final product anyways. We wired this cute li'l guy to an Arduino and ran a rotary encoder demo that was expecting two encoders and it worked like a breeze - just the way you expect! This unique user interface element definitely solves an existing problem and Bourns is famous for their high quality encoders, so you know it will last and work well in your product design. The Great Search: Triple-Axis Magnetometer replacement for LIS3MDL

One part that's been holding up a lot of our products from staying in stock is the LIS3MDL. Originally this was a $1 triple-axis magnetometer that paired well with IMU chips for making full-fusion orientation sensors. Now they're going for $20 on the gray market with an estimated ship date of 2059 (e.g. 'who knows'). Since we were out of IMU chips for a while, we were OK waiting. But now we've got some in stock and with no magnetometer shortage end in sight, we're thinking of just replacing the LIS3MDL. Especially since the magnetometer is not the most sensitive sensor in a 9-DoF (that would be the gyro). Let's identify a sensor with about +-20 gauss (+-2 mT) range, I2C interface, and affordable enough so we don't have to change our prices. “Circuit Garden” by artist Kelly Heaton on view 2/28 - 4/8 at 450 West 33rd Street NYC

"Circuit Garden celebrates our electronic culture and invites us to contemplate nature – specifically human nature in symbiosis with machine intelligence. Artist Kelly Heaton presents a large-scale circuit board in the form of an artificial lawn that is “planted” with plush sculptural electronic devices. The work evokes a playful garden, or a vintage circuit board that has been enlarged to human scale. Situated in the landscape of Circuit Garden, viewers will discover smaller functional circuits that mimic animal behaviors, such as birdsong and chirping crickets. As the viewer approaches the installation to investigate further, Heaton’s analog electronic designs generate these naturalistic sounds in real time. The sonic landscape of Circuit Garden is thus brought to life by electric vibrations of artificial origin and not recordings of real birds and crickets, as one might expect." STATEMENT BY KELLY HEATON: "“Electronic technology is profoundly shaping our world. Many people are symbiotic with their smart phones and digital presence. Artificial intelligence is growing smarter, and our concept of “nature” is being radically transformed by engineering. Electricity is the most important invention since the discovery of fire. Yet, the art of electrical engineering is not well understood or practiced by people outside of the scientific community. I would like to invite everyone—not only engineers—into a conversation about electronic culture, nature, and the rise of machine intelligence. While most artists work with digital media, I focus my creative practice on electronic hardware because circuits are the physical body without which there would be no digital media. Like a biologist studies animals, I study circuits to understand the physiology of intelligent machines. I am inspired by Nikola Tesla’s statement, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” My art explores these concepts literally in the form of circuits that vibrate in naturalistic patterns. Circuit Garden pays homage to electrical oscillation, specifically to the astable multivibrator, which is my favorite method to generate life-like waveforms.”" About the artist: Kelly Heaton is a mixed media artist who believes that electricity is the most important medium of our time. She uses circuits to explore the “spark of life” in biological organisms as well as machines, acting as a techno-spiritualist to portray the immaterial character of her subjects. Heaton’s art has been featured in the United States and internationally, including the ADAA Art Show, New York, NY; The Science Gallery at Trinity College, Hartford, CT; the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; and three solo shows at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, NewYork, NY. She is the recipient of grants from The Peter S. Reed Foundation, Creative Capital, LEF Foundation, Council for the Arts at MIT, and the Jacob K. Javitz Fellowship Program. She won the L’Oreal Promotion Prize in the Art and Science of Color for her research with physical pixels and has been awarded residencies at Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, CA; MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Cambridge, MA; Duke University, Durham, NC; Tortuga Escondida, Akumal, Mexico; and Art Interactive, Cambridge, MA.
