Moving Apple ][ Floppy Drive with Adafruit CIrcuitPython
jepler ended the week on a high note, getting the motor of an Apple ][ floppy drive moving back and forth with CircuitPython! It's part of our quest to make Adafruit_Floppy work with non-PC floppy disk drives. The simple code making this happen can be found in a GitHub gist: https://gist.github.com/jepler/16cdb13d8c3298c392d789772a56d177 For this step, +5 and +12V supplies are required, coming from an ATX power supply. The reading circuit requires an additional -12V supply just to spice things up. After that, we'll see what else is needed to start reading and writing flux in these drives. EYE on NPI – Maxim MAX31888 ±0.25°C Accurate, 1-Wire Temperature Sensor
This week's EYE ON NPI comes in right under the wire...the one wire! It's Maxim's MAX31888 high-accuracy 1-Wire sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/maxim-integrated/max31888-0-25-c-accurate-1-wire-temperature-sensor) with 0.25ºC degree accuracy. This is a lovely little upgrade to the extremely popular DS18B20 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/base-product/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/175/DS18B20/118476) series of 1-Wire temperature sensors, but with a smaller body and better accuracy - the DS18B20 has at best ±0.5ºC in comparison. The MAX31888 temperature sensors will keep your temperature logging system fresh and secure, and best of all... They're in stock right now at Digi-Key! Order both MAX31888 sensors (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc.-maxim-integrated/MAX31888ALT/15792903) and the eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc.-maxim-integrated/MAX31888EVSYS-/15792904) for immediate shipment, you could have them in your hot lil hands tomorrow afternoon!

The Great Search: LCD Segmented Display Driver with I2C Interface
This week's search is going to be for an LCD driver chip. We've never actually worked with raw LCD elements, but if you do need to use one, you'll quickly note that they're a bit odd to work with and require an 'AC'-like waveform and constant refreshing. They're also very susceptible to ghosting. So let's identify a chip - ideally SPI or I2C - that will do all that drive control for us! Desk of Ladyada - Some LCD and Winamp fun!
This week we worked on some upcoming new products, including the Feather ESP32 V2 which we listed in the shop in prep for stocking next week. it's a full refresh of the Feather ESP32 and we even got low power in deep sleep - down to 70uA! we also got some LCD samples in the post and had a fun time learning how to drive these with GPIO pins on a microcontroller. finally, foamyguy threw together a little project to make a pyportal into a little audio player and we'll check that out. i've been meaning to redesign the pyportal with an esp32-s3 and this project is sort of inspiring me to get on with it. when we have a brand new board, we do a lot of checks to make sure that the first panel is right because if there's one thing that makes mistakes very quickly - its a mis-programmed pick and place! this is the time to check the right part, orientation and any placement offsets that need correction. this panel looks good and after it goes through the oven we'll do a first-article inspection with the tester before we let'er rip! this board is the new Feather ESP32 V2 which is a big update to our classic Feather ESP32 but with Stemma QT, NeoPixel, extra button, and a lot more FLASH and PSRAM. we think it'll be really popular! #adafruit #esp32 #feather Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI – C&K ENC Series Optical Rotary Encoder Switches
This week's EYE ON NPI is gonna spin you right round, baby, right round like a record player - it's C&K's ENC Series Optical Rotary Encoder Switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/ck-components/enc-series-encoder-switches) a high-reliability encoder with strong detents, that's great for medical and industrial equipment, automotive, and more, where longevity and reliability is important. Rotary encoders (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/encoders/507) are a popular user interface element that engineers use to add a tactile increment/decrement control. We find they're much more intuitive to use than touch screens, especially when you want to increase or decrease a value precisely: its a lot easier to twist the knob by one detent than it is to press a touch screen once. Rotary encoders can also be used hands-free or when observing some output because the tactile feedback is strong. (https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/a-designers-guide-to-encoders) The most common rotary encoders used for user input are mechanical style, usually with detents. They can be ring-style like the famous iPod Clickwheel (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204217) or knob style. These are two mechanical rotary encoders in that there is a little leaf spring connected to the knob and the "common" pin, and the body has a metal-cutout piece, that when rotated connects and disconnects the two side pins from the common. The two pins pulse high and low to indicate motion and direction. Usually two interrupt pins are connected to the rotary encoder to catch the pulses and track the counter increment or decrement. Super fun and easy right? Except....that little leaf spring contact ends up rubbing against the gray code wheel and even good quality springs have a contact life of maybe 500,000 contacts. that's only 10,000 full turns - each turn is 2 x 24 contacts. if you're turning the knob 10 times a day the encoder will fail after 1000 days, about three years. And rotary encoders do fail, a lot! Heck, even our favorite scope we got right out of school has a broken encoder on the channel 1 zoom select (not surprising, since channel one is the most used and its turned constantly to zoom into the signal). A bad encoder may not be user-serviceable at all, and requires some care to desolder and replace - unless it's on a detachable cable or module, it can be a very serious repair. Flaky encoders are also a little dangerous - they can increment instead of decrement, which can be confusing and cause incorrect settings. If you're designing a medical device or a car where there's a knob that will be used daily, having it fail after 3 to 5 years is not going to be an option - especially since the failure can happen instantly. Not a good look when a $2000 product is taken down by a $2 encoder failure. Enter the optical encoder! Optical encoders solve the contact rating issue by replacing the leaf spring with two LEDs and an optical sensor. Instead of mechanically contacting the two grey code bits, the optical sensor provides the pulses without the risk of wear and tear. These cost a few dollars more than your everyday mechanical encoder but give you rock solid reliability. These C&K ENC optical encoders (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/ck-components/enc-series-encoder-switches) look and feel just like mechanical encoders. With 24 detents, they're a drop-in replacement. You can panel mount, and there's even a quick-replace connector with JST SH 6-pin socket (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/A06SR06SR30K51A/6009375), for easy replacement in the field. The C+K ENC Series Optical Rotary Encoder Switches (https://www.digikey.com/short/pw8p3tf8) are in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key! Order today and you'll be reliably twistin' and turnin' by tomorrow afternoon - don't forget to pick up some JST SH cables as well (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/A06SR06SR30K51A/6009375)!

very smol seven segment LCD display
This is a fingertip-sized 7-segment display, so cute! we're driving it here directly with gpio pins from a qtpy samd21 chip, which, according to the internet is Not Something One Does - you're supposed to use an lcd segment driver or at least a chip with built in peripheral. and we sorta see why - there's a little ghosting from how we're driving the segments, even though we're doing our best to depower between common-pin swaps. still, its legible and allows for quick testing. this appnote came in handy to show how the 'ac' waveform is generated: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/AppNotes/doc2569.pdf one fun thing to learn is it isn't 7-segments-plus-3-commons, but rather 6-segement-select-plus-4-common with a bit of multiplexing thrown in! #adafruit #lcd #display Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: Positive to negative 12V power inverter for Apple 2 disk drive bias
The Apple Disk ][ drive is a converted Shugart drive that has three power supplies: 5V, +12V and -12V. The 5V and 12V are for the motor control. Negative 12V is a bit of a pain to generate, but thankfully the -12V seems to only be used for biasing a trim potentiometer. So, we don't need a lot of current. Still, we do need to generate -12V, let's take inspiration from the classic MAX232 RS232 driver chip to find a charge pump converter! QT Py ESP32 tester is ready!
we see our QT Py ESP32 pcbs have shipped, so it's time to wrap up this design with a tester. like the esp32-s2 qt py, we're using a raspberry pi to test because its a convenient way to run esptool for uploading data and wpa cli scan, to verify the signal strength: we program the test board with access point code, then check the rssi on the pi side. if we get a good signal we can be confident the antenna and passives got selected right. this test seems to be running well, and we'll be manufacturing SOON! #esp32 #adafruit #qtpy Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

💎🍎💾 Apple Disk ][ Clear Enclosure 💎🍎💾
we're absolutely 😍 over maceffects' clear cases. since we've got our shugart 34 pin floppy hacking well figured out (time for hardware spins!) we can now turn our attention to the Apple Disk ][ which is sort of a 'gutted' shugart drive. what better way to psych ourselves up for this work than to re-skin this disk drive? only thing we recommend being careful of: pulling the plastic wrap off can generate some pretty serious static. we used our scope (earthed) ground to dissapate as much as we could, and were wary to make sure the plastic, and us, didn't touch any components. whew! we'll start poking at this shortly. https://maceffects.com/products/clear-case-for-apple-disk-ii-5-25-floppy-drive #adafruit #apple #clear Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Desk of Ladyada - Stemma Sunday and lots of new designs!
We churned through a big pile of testers and new designs this week: two IPS TFT displays with EYESPI connectors, the VL53L4CD time-of-flight sensor, the ESP32 QT Py, an OV2640/OV5640 camera breakout, and the ESP32-C3 QT Py. With a lot of our floppy work done and tested for both SAMD51 and RP2040, it's time to move from shugart 34 pin to Apple Disk ][ which uses a different 20 pin interface. The power supply and controlling technique is going to be different for this drive because to save costs they removed and simplified the drive control system. Timeslapse rework - VL53L1X to VL53L4CD QT breakout
One nice thing about standardizing on Stemma QT is that it makes it super easy to swap chips out when new versions appear. Here we are reworking a VL53 breakout to remove the older chip and replace it with a VL53L4CD https://www.st.com/en/imaging-and-photonics-solutions/vl53l4cd.html which is a new time of flight sensor from ST. this one has lower range, only up to 1.3 meters instead of 4 meters BUT it can do much closer reads, as little as 1mm away, so it could be useful in some situations where the sensor could bump up against what it is trying to sense. Aaand, everyone always asks, so! EYE on NPI – SEN54 Environmental Sensor Node
This week's EYE ON NPI is another banger from Sensirion - who has been really rockin' out with great sensors over the last few years - it's the SEN54 Environmental Sensor Node (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/sensirion/sek-sen5x-evaluation-kit), an all-in-one sensor node that combines all of the Sensirion top hits in one. This sensor looks like your everyday dust sensor - just like the SPS30 particulate sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SPS30/9598990), but combines additional sensors inside! There's a few models planned for the SEN5X series - today we're highlighting the SEN54 which has * Particulate Matter - PM2.5 * Humidity and Temperature via SHT40 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SHT40-AD1B-R3/14322709) * Volatile Organic Compound via SGP41 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SGP41-D-R4/15652788) (There's also a SEN55 which will include an addition NOx sensor, but it has not been released yet) The sensor uses a sub-processor that will act as a single I2C peripheral to receive commands and send sensor data back. It's a great deal if you want a simple-to-install air quality sensor with all the goodies. There's a 3D model available for mechanical installation, and for connectivity you just need a single JST GHR 6 pin (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/GHR-06V-S/807818) cable which has power, and I2C or UART data. Note that the cable is not sold separately so you'll need to acquire the cable from a separate vendor or pick up the full evaluation kit that comes with a couple cables at additional cost. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SEK-SEN5X/15903862) The real success story here is the libraries that are pre-written and supported by Sensirion that makes getting started very very fast. We were able to wire up the SEN54 to an ESP32 board and run the BLE demo (https://github.com/Sensirion/arduino-ble-gadget) within a few minutes! Using the Sensirion MyAmbience app, (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sensirion-myambience/id1529131572) we could see instant data show up on our iOS or Android device. Over-all a slick and easy experience. We must say that we're really impressed with how maker-engineer friendly the sensors and firmware development is. This all-in-one sensor board is going to be a popular environmental sensor from folks who really know environmental sensing! Digi-Key has a whole bunch of the Sensirion SEN54 sensors in stock right now for immediate shipment (https://www.digikey.com/short/pn08ff2w) and with same-day shipping, you can order today and be sensing by tomorrow afternoon!
