Adafruit's Floppy board writes Apple II Floppies using a standard PC floppy drive

Jeff Epler recently contributed code to FluxEngine making it possible to write Apple II disks using a FluxEngine-compatible floppy interface, such as the prototype Adafruit Floppy board. In this demo, jepler uses a standard PC 5.25" floppy drive (TEAC model FD-55GFR) connected with the Adafruit Floppy board to write a floppy disk with a classic educational game downloaded from archive.org: Number Munchers. Previously we've demonstrated how using the Adafruit Floppy interface you can read and write disks for PC and Commodore 64, and also read disks for Mac including crunchy old 400kB and 800kB floppies, which PCs have traditionally been unable to read. Want to try your hand at Number Munchers and prove that you know what a prime number is? You don't need an Apple II, just play it in an emulator: https://archive.org/details/MECC_A170_v10_4amCrack Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI – Bourns PEC11D Series Dual-Centric Rotary Encoder with Momentary Push Switch

This week's EYE ON NPI is a gaze into the duality of man! Wait, no, it's a gaze into the dual-concentricity of this fascinating new rotary encoder: the Bourns PEC11D Series Dual-Centric Rotary Encoder with Momentary Push Switch (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bourns/pec11d-series-dual-centric-rotary-encoder-with-momentary-push-switch). We have covered rotary encoders and switches on EYE ON NPI before (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=eye+on+npi+rotary) so you may be familiar with them. Rotary encoders are a popular user interface element that engineers use to add a tactile increment/decrement control. We find they’re much more intuitive to use than touch screens, especially when you want to increase or decrease a value precisely: it's a lot easier to twist the knob by one detent than it is to press a touch screen once. Rotary encoders can also be used hands-free or when observing some output because the tactile feedback is strong. The most common rotary encoders used for user input are mechanical style, usually with detents. They can be ring-style like the famous iPod Clickwheel or knob style. These are two mechanical rotary encoders in that there is a little leaf spring connected to the knob and the “common” pin, and the body has a metal-cutout piece, that when rotated connects and disconnects the two side pins from the common. The two pins pulse high and low to indicate motion and direction. Usually two interrupt pins are connected to the rotary encoder to catch the pulses and track the counter increment or decrement. Say you have some product you're designing and you want to have two encoders in one, say because you want 'rough' and 'fine' adjustment. You could use one encoder and have the button state determine what mode the encoder is in. (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Learning_System_Guides/blob/main/Rotary_Trinkey/CircuitPython_ColorPicker_Example/code.py) However, there may be a situation where you want to use that button for entering the new setting. Or if you have a very space-constrained interface, and you can't fit two side-by-side. That's where the Bourns PEC11D (https://www.digikey.com/short/013h5701) will come to the rescue! This encoder has two (count 'em two) rotary encoders in one package. By turning the outer or inner part separately you can control two electrically separated rotary encoders, and there's also a push-button input. You'll need to mould or machine a special knob to allow selection of either half, but most folks end up with custom knobs rather than off-the-shelf for a final product anyways. We wired this cute li'l guy to an Arduino and ran a rotary encoder demo that was expecting two encoders and it worked like a breeze - just the way you expect! This unique user interface element definitely solves an existing problem and Bourns is famous for their high quality encoders, so you know it will last and work well in your product design. The Bourns PEC11D (https://www.digikey.com/short/013h5701) is in stock now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key. Order today and you'll be concentrically rotating by tomorrow afternoon!

The Great Search: Triple-Axis Magnetometer replacement for LIS3MDL

One part that's been holding up a lot of our products from staying in stock is the LIS3MDL. Originally this was a $1 triple-axis magnetometer that paired well with IMU chips for making full-fusion orientation sensors. Now they're going for $20 on the gray market with an estimated ship date of 2059 (e.g. 'who knows'). Since we were out of IMU chips for a while, we were OK waiting. But now we've got some in stock and with no magnetometer shortage end in sight, we're thinking of just replacing the LIS3MDL. Especially since the magnetometer is not the most sensitive sensor in a 9-DoF (that would be the gyro). Let's identify a sensor with about +-20 gauss (+-2 mT) range, I2C interface, and affordable enough so we don't have to change our prices. “Circuit Garden” by artist Kelly Heaton on view 2/28 - 4/8 at 450 West 33rd Street NYC

"Circuit Garden celebrates our electronic culture and invites us to contemplate nature – specifically human nature in symbiosis with machine intelligence. Artist Kelly Heaton presents a large-scale circuit board in the form of an artificial lawn that is “planted” with plush sculptural electronic devices. The work evokes a playful garden, or a vintage circuit board that has been enlarged to human scale. Situated in the landscape of Circuit Garden, viewers will discover smaller functional circuits that mimic animal behaviors, such as birdsong and chirping crickets. As the viewer approaches the installation to investigate further, Heaton’s analog electronic designs generate these naturalistic sounds in real time. The sonic landscape of Circuit Garden is thus brought to life by electric vibrations of artificial origin and not recordings of real birds and crickets, as one might expect." STATEMENT BY KELLY HEATON: "“Electronic technology is profoundly shaping our world. Many people are symbiotic with their smart phones and digital presence. Artificial intelligence is growing smarter, and our concept of “nature” is being radically transformed by engineering. Electricity is the most important invention since the discovery of fire. Yet, the art of electrical engineering is not well understood or practiced by people outside of the scientific community. I would like to invite everyone—not only engineers—into a conversation about electronic culture, nature, and the rise of machine intelligence. While most artists work with digital media, I focus my creative practice on electronic hardware because circuits are the physical body without which there would be no digital media. Like a biologist studies animals, I study circuits to understand the physiology of intelligent machines. I am inspired by Nikola Tesla’s statement, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” My art explores these concepts literally in the form of circuits that vibrate in naturalistic patterns. Circuit Garden pays homage to electrical oscillation, specifically to the astable multivibrator, which is my favorite method to generate life-like waveforms.”" About the artist: Kelly Heaton is a mixed media artist who believes that electricity is the most important medium of our time. She uses circuits to explore the “spark of life” in biological organisms as well as machines, acting as a techno-spiritualist to portray the immaterial character of her subjects. Heaton’s art has been featured in the United States and internationally, including the ADAA Art Show, New York, NY; The Science Gallery at Trinity College, Hartford, CT; the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; and three solo shows at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, NewYork, NY. She is the recipient of grants from The Peter S. Reed Foundation, Creative Capital, LEF Foundation, Council for the Arts at MIT, and the Jacob K. Javitz Fellowship Program. She won the L’Oreal Promotion Prize in the Art and Science of Color for her research with physical pixels and has been awarded residencies at Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, CA; MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Cambridge, MA; Duke University, Durham, NC; Tortuga Escondida, Akumal, Mexico; and Art Interactive, Cambridge, MA. Heaton received her BA from Yale University and her MS from MIT. Desk of Ladyada - Stemma Sunday, ESP32 QT, and a flip-flop PCF8523

This week we spent a lot of time on revisions! This means we're not able to spend as much time on new products - but it's important to make sure existing customers can keep using our parts. For example, the Ultimate GPS USB board got a respin https://www.adafruit.com/product/4279 to move to the CP2012N and also USB C. We have a few more boards to go for the CP210x revisions. We also decided to revise our PCF8523 breakout - historically we've used the SOIC-8 version, but now we may only be able to get the HVSON-8 version for a few months. Since we can redesign the PCB to use either, we're making a 'flip flop' design. Finally, ESP32 QT Py got fabbed, but we're having issues during test. We think it could be due to the antenna being too strong and interfering with the chip. We could redesign this for uFL connector change the pi-network values to reduce the signal strength a bit. We also got our FLIPPER ZERO https://flipperzero.one/ this week, this adorable mammalian engineering multi-tool has a lot of RF and hardware interfacing built in and it looks great! The first ESP32-C3 QT Py off the machine line...

This is going to be our first RISC V based dev board, and isn't that something to celebrate? It's a QT Py based on the ESP32-C3 which is a WiFi + BLE chipset with RISC V instead of tensilica core. This chip is a little new, but it does seem to have fairly good Arduino support, we're able to do WiFi tests and thankfully someone sent us a patch for NeoPixels so that's glowing as well. This chip has a built in USB-to-Serial converter (*not* native USB!) so there's a ROM bootloader, great for beginners because its not brickable. There are not a lot of pins on the C3, its a very minimal chip, so the QT Py is actually a perfect format. this particular board is the first off the machine line this morning, so it'll be in the shop soooooon https://www.adafruit.com/product/5405 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI – Challenge Electronics' IP68/IP65 Waterproof Battery Holders

This week's EYE ON NPI is from a supplier that will challenge your expectations! It's Challenge Electronics' IP68/IP65 Waterproof Battery Holders (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/challenge-electronics/ip68-ip65-waterproof-battery-holders) A series of durable, waterproof battery cases that will do great at powering your board even in intense dusty and wet conditions! Challenge Electronics’ IP-rated battery holders provide a low-profile form factor with a watertight seal. Designed for AA and AAA batteries, these holders feature a sleek and easy-to-integrate design ensuring waterproof mounting under the harshest environments to save time in the design cycle. A lot of electronic devices these days are designed to be sealed plastic enclosures (https://www.ifixit.com/smartphone-repairability) - and if they are battery powered, the battery is a LiPoly that is tucked inside and recharged. But there's a lot to be said for the common AA and AAA batteries. These are available anywhere around the world, instantly recognizable, and come in various temperature grades and recharability. For user-or-field replacement, or in use of extreme temperatures, they've still got a place in product design. The down-side is that battery cases (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4779) are often plastic-retained clips that allow dust, humidity, and spilled-diet-coke in, which can cause icky corrosion to the steel or tin terminals. This Flickr image (https://www.flickr.com/photos/sometoast/3242192055) shows a similar self-corroding affect, but having dampness won't help! Challenge's battery holders are compact, but have 4 screws for secure closure and a built-in gasket that will get you IP65-level sealing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code). That means fully dust-tight and water-proof to jets of water. Note this doesn't mean you can dunk it underwater - for that you'd need IP67 or IP68 - these are better for outdoor use or in some industrial settings where there may be liquids flying around. Challenge Electronics makes Waterproof Battery Holders (https://www.digikey.com/short/8nw43fr8) in three varieties, with AA and AAA sizes. All have the same IP65 rating. If we had to pick one, the 3xAA will give you a good 2500-4000mAh and 3.6V to 4.5V nominal, great for powering a 3.3V LDO project, and AA's are the most common battery. All three types are available right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. Book and order today and it will ship immediately so you can have it in your hand tomorrow afternoon.

Fancy A Linux Feather?

The Allwinner F1Cx00S series of chips are famous for being "$2 linux-on-a-chip" with DRAM built in - all you need is some passives, a crystal, and SPI NOR flash memory to have a miniature booting linux board. It's not very fast, and it's not very powerful but maybe we could run minimal python scripts on it? we've never used this chip but we used to noodle with openwrt and this seems kinda similar. we couldn't find any open hardware designs so we're drafting up the schematic - hopefully get all the wiring for this 88 pin QFN right :) anyone use this chip before? #adafruit #linux #feather Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Lower-power Rev C of the ESP32-S2 Feather coming soon!

The non-TFT version of the ESP32-S2 Feather has been out of stock for a few weeks because we made a design error in rev B and want to fix it before putting back in the shop. We used a P-Channel FET to enable/disable the Stemma QT / I2C power but kept the pullups connected to 3.3V (this was on purpose because the onboard LC709 battery monitor is powered from the battery and this would let you read the battery state without having to enable the I2C power). when a bunch of QT sensors get attached, the leakage from the pullups turns into quite a power sink. for example, here we have 4 I2C devices on the bus and you can see the 'deep sleep' current is a whoppin' 700uA! no good...by switching to a separate regulator and connecting the pullups to the regulator output we get a cool 70uA as we expect. now we can send off this pcb to get this popular feather restocked - sign up at https://www.adafruit.com/product/5000 to get notified! #adafruit #feather #esp32 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: Panel Mount S-Video (DIN-4) connector

For our Atari Video Music machine mod, we want to add an S-Video output port. S-Video splits the signal from NTSC into chroma and luma, so the signal tends to be clearer and more stable. Thankfully, the chip in the AVM gives us the chroma and luma on separated pins, so we just have to wire them up to a standard S-Video connector. Let's see how we can find one that will perfectly fit on the AVM without any drilling or gluing! We had been working on a lot of camera support for CircuitPython. We're getting back to that project now with an all-in-one DIY camera board with an OV5640 camera module and an ESP32-S2. One thing that we bumped into is that SD cards can be very finicky when initialized into SPI mode on a shared bus, but we found a way around it! The Great Search - panel mount S-Video (DIN-4) connector https://www.digikey.com/short/jvtv2t4z For our Atari Video Music machine mod - we want to add an S-Video output port. S-Video splits the signal from NTSC into chroma and luma, so the signal tends to be clearer and more stable. Thankfully the chip in the AVM gives us the chroma and luma on separated pins so we just have to wire them up to a standard S-Video connector. Lets see how we can find one that will perfectly fit on the AVM without any drilling or gluing! #deskofladyada #thegreatsearch #adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
