Quick demo for the RCWL I2C ultrasonic
The RCWL sensor has a lil solder jumper on the back that lets you turn it into "IIC" mode - we tried it out and ... it kinda works! This sensor can be used on an I2C bus, but it doesn't seem to do well if sharing it with other devices. Still, if you have a microcontroller or microcomputer that doesn't have fast GPIO for toggle/pulse or a hardware UART, you definitely can use it for inexpensive sensing. Note that on this QT Py RP2040 we've got the OLED on a different I2C bus which is why it's happily running for hours now. The Desk of Ladyada - Samplin' Sunday
Let's go through some of the samples we've received this week to see if any are worthy of stocking in the adafruit shop! We've got some soldering kits, translucent rotary encoders, DC plug adapters and rainbowy hex wrenches. We're also looking at some ultrasonic transducers, useful when you want to create or detect ultrasonic waves in a custom situation. The Great Search - Ultrasonic Transmitter/Receiver Element for Distance Sensing https://www.digikey.com/short/v8h0wzt7 We're interested in implementing an ultrasonic distance sensor on a microcontroller without using a 'standard' off-the-shelf chip with trigger/pulse mode. Also, because we're sorta curious how these things work! But first up we have to acquire some ultrasonic sensors. It's definitely easier to design a sonar with two elements - one to transmit and one to receive - but perhaps some clever code/hardware design could make it possible to do with one! Let's find a 40KHz ultrasonic transceiver we can get on Digi-Key to start our experimentations. #deskofladyada #thegreatsearch #adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Chip Shortage: Diodes AP2112K-3.3 600ma CMOS LDO Regulator ChipShortage @Adafruit
Chip Shortage is a new feature video by Adafruit's Ladyada to highlight items that are in short supply or possibly "unobtainium" (with no known return date to the market). This week it is the Diodes AP2112K-3.3 600ma CMOS LDO Regulator, https://www.diodes.com/part/view/AP2112 Digi-Key https://www.digikey.com/short/h7hhqhwt These are used in many Adafruit boards as it's perfect for powering any number of designs such as sensors and more. Adafruit is looking for a cool 100,000 pieces to continue manufacturing with this highly used part. --------------------------------------- Adafruit is working night and day to keep products in stock and deliver new products during the chip shortage. EYE on NPI - Murata Type 1SJ Integrated LoRaWAN Module
This week's EYE ON NPI is going loooooooooooooong with a fully integrated Long Range radio module + microcontroller - it's the Murata's Type 1SJ Integrated LoRaWAN Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/murata-electronics-north-america/type-1sj-integrated-lorawan-module). This nifty wafer-thin chip is an all-in-one compact solution for adding far-reaching wireless without the cost and power requirements of cellular or WiFi. Particularly for compact products that need to stay small and thin, we've never seen a smaller integrated LoRaWAN solution! This product is a true triple collaboration, combining the second-generation Semtech SX1262 radio frequency IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/342nj2dp) that comes with the licensed LoRa encoding support and an ARM Cortex-M0 STM32L072 microcontroller (https://www.digikey.com/short/z27vc2rn) from STMicroelectronics with 192 kB of Flash memory, and 20 kB of RAM, along with a built-in RF switch. Having the STM32L0 chip means excellent deep sleep capabilities, so the module can run on a battery - even a coin cell - for a long time. The STM32 also has plenty of peripherals, so whatever data you need to send over LoRa, you'll be able to read and process the data: USB, ADC, I2C, SPI, UART etc. The RF side of the module is the Semtech SX1262 - they're the company that licenses the LoRa RF specification so basically you're guaranteed to get working LoRa/LoRaWAN support with working code examples. The radio can transmit at up +22dBm for many-mile range, similar to the SX breakouts and FeatherWings we manufacture (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=lora&sort=BestMatch) with official driver code available through mbed (https://os.mbed.com/teams/Semtech/) and GitHub (https://github.com/Lora-net/sx126x_driver). All together they make for a compact, inexpensive module which saves you money and space over combining the radio plus microcontroller. We like the epoxy-coated slab look and it seems like it would be easy to use in a pick & place + reflow manufacturing line. To get started quickly, you can pick up the Murata LBAA0QB1SJ-TEMP-EVK evaluation board (https://www.digikey.com/short/rz8pmb3j) or two, it comes with Arduino-like headers, antenna connection options and a built in SWD/JTAG programmer debugger for the STM32 microcontroller. Once you've got your code working, the individual Murata LBAA0QB1SJ-296 (https://www.digikey.com/short/cct0q8cd) modules are available on tape & reel - book an order with Digi-Key for shipment as soon as they come into stock!

The Great Search - Alternative replacement for our go-to 3.3V regulator part 2
On last weeks' The Great Search, we spent some time looking for a drop-in replacement for our go-to regulator, the AP2112K-3.3 (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4wh4ftz) and we found some SOT23-5 sized parts that have a fairly low drop-out and fair current output for most of our breakouts - the AP7354 (https://www.digikey.com/short/2bznd7d3). However what we really need is something with 500mA+ current output that we can use for our Feather/Itsy/QT Py/etc. dev boards. While there are a few other SOT23-5 options that might come into stock that we'll keep our eyes peeled for, we also want to see if we can future-proof our designs to use another footprint, so that we have more options if this part shortage continues for another 2 years. Let's see what's available in smaller-than-SOT23-5 that can provide the same kind of current output! See on Digi-Key https://www.digikey.com/short/9nddjfr0

EYE on NPI - Analog Devices / Maxim MAX31329 Real-Time Clock (RTC)
This week's EYE ON NPI is right on time with the MAX31329 Low Current Real-Time Clock RTC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/analog-devices/max31329-low-current-real-time-clock), which will fit wonderfully into your power, board size and materials budget no matter how small. We are digging this fully-integrated RTC, with a lot of li'l extras that make it an excellent choice for compact products. A Real Time Clock a.k.a. RTC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_clock) is a specialty chip that is designed to be ultra low power, so even when everything else in the circuit is turned off, it can still sip power from a super capacitor or tiny battery and keep track of time. It's how your computer and devices can go all the way down to 0% power and yet still know what time it is when recharged/re-powered. Note this is different than storage memory because details like your WiFi password don't need updating every second whereas an RTC has to keep ticking second after second until main power comes back up. Just about everything you own has an RTC in it because timekeeping is so essential to functionality. There are some chips that have built in RTCs but often these are just counters and are not as low power as a true RTC chip. The MAX31329 for example, has a "240nA Timekeeping Current", whereas only the most power-optimized microcontrollers can get below 1uA. Compare it to the DS1307 which has twice the current, ~500nA! With such low currents, you can even use a super cap (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/elna-america/DSK-3R3H703T414-HRL/2171199) instead of a lithium battery to keep time, meaning no special shipping management or battery replacements. Wondering how big a capacitor you'd need? Maxim's got ya covered with their handy super-cap calculator (https://www.maximintegrated.com/en/design/design-tools/calculators/product-design-calculators/supercap.html) OK, so it's low power. What else is so great about it? We also really like that the crystal is in-package integrated! Every RTC needs a crystal oscillator, the thing that actually does the counting of time. The crystals are almost always 32.768KHz crystals (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/abracon-llc/ABS25-32-768KHZ-T/675361?s=N4IgTCBcDaIIYCMBOcDGB7AdgAgIICEBlMAVgFoBmMAOgHYA2ADgGkAJALTIBUQBdAXyA) so the chips count the vibrations into a 16-bit counter. When the counter overflows, a second has passed. Often the crystal is the same size as the chip, or if it's integrated, the chip is pretty large. like in the case of the DS3231.(https://www.adafruit.com/product/3013) In this case, we keep the nice smol size. A nice side effect of having a crystal integrated is improved tuning! Having a precise crystal, say +-5ppm like the Citizen CM315D32768 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/citizen-finedevice-co-ltd/CM315D32768HZFT/5970266) adds another 50 cents to the bill of materials. Not needed here, it's inside and tuned to that fancy 5ppm. Ideally they'd have a temperature-compensated version in the future, since that can get the precision down to 2ppm but 5ppm is still four times better than most low cost 32khz crystals. Finally, a few small but kind details we caught in the datasheet (https://www.maximintegrated.com/en/products/analog/MAX31329.html): the RTC is 1.6V thru 5V logic friendly, so you can use it with any kit you've got. There's 64 bytes of battery-backed SRAM. I2C has a timeout feature in case of I2C bus jitters which happen at low power dips. Automatic power-switchover to battery when main power droops. Trickle charging with built-in diode and various internal resistors. External clock source select, such as GPS 1pps or line power 50/60hz. This is a nice RTC, at a nice price, and you can book your order for the Maxim MAX31329 at Digi-Key right now (https://www.digikey.com/short/vqrcfdw3) for shipment the moment they come in stock. According to the lead time estimates, this part will be shipping in about 3 weeks / mid-June so you can start designing it into your PCB and chips will come in right when the prototype PCB is complete. While you're waiting you can also pick up one of the MAX31329 shield evaluation boards (https://www.digikey.com/short/ztdw8wfj) which can be plugged into any Arduino-Uno-like microcontroller and also comes with a development board if you just want to use the built in firmware/software.

The Great Search - Alternative replacement for our go-to 3.3V regulator
The chip shortage is the gift that keeps not giving! Our next shipment of our go-to 3.3V LDO, the AP2112K-3.3 is delayed and we use a LOT of these chips - over a thousand a day. Not only do we use it for all our dev boards as a regulator to take USB or Lipo input and drop it down to 3.3V, but it's also on almost all of our breakouts as a regulator that can take 3 to 5V and provide 3.3V output no matter which is used. For that reason we need it to have very low drop-out. To keep our items in stock, we could change the lower-power breakouts to use a less-current-output version of the AP2112K (500~600mA) and stretch out our current stock! The Desk of Ladyada - S3 & Sample Sunday
This weekend we spent most of the days outside, but we did get to one new board! We already make a Feather with an ESP32-S3 8MB module. Espressif recently sent us a few reels of ESP32-S3 mini modules with 4M flash and 2MB PSRAM, so we are spinning a new version of the Feather for this module. It's pin compatible but since the modules look so alike we ran a new PCB with silkscreen to indicate which you have. We also got a big bag of samples we're testing out -we can show you what we got and whether we'll be stocking them! The Great Search - Alternative replacement for our go-to 3.3V regulator https://www.digikey.com/short/vcqct7jj The chip shortage is the gift that keeps not giving! EYE on NPI - nRF5340 Audio Development Kit
This week's EYE ON NPI is chillin' and listening to some vibin' beats - we're featuring Nordic's jam-packed nRF5340 Audio Development Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf5340-audio-development-kit) that will get you going fast with Bluetooth Low Energy audio development with a lovely kit that has everything you need to build both basic and advanced BTLE audio demos that exercise all the new capabilities of BT 4.x and 5.x's native audio streaming technology Audio was one of the first killer app's for Bluetooth adoption. Who doesn't remember when ubiquitous 'hands-free' headsets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headset_(audio)#Bluetooth_wireless_headsets) started popping up in every business guy's ear. For mobile devices, these headsets turned out be quick to pair, and allowed people to talk, or listen to music, while driving or working without wires. Bluetooth classic audio is still incredibly popular today: not just used in headsets but also in Bluetooth speakers (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/klein-tools-inc/AEPJS2/11570486), hearing aids, wireless mics, home voice agents, and more! When the audio profile was first invented, there were a few, totally reasonable restrictions placed on how it was used. First, it's a point-to-point connection - also called source-sink connection. There's a supplier source of audio - say the MP3 player - and a destination sink like a speaker. Second, the compression codec had to match the processor and battery capabilities of late 90's technology. The first classic codec was called SBC, although recently there are newer codecs that can do a better job with reducing lossyness and, of course, can take advantage of the Moore's-law improvements in memory and processor capabilities. Unfortunately, as one can expect in such a technology space, many of the codecs are patented, licensed, and require per-device fees. Also, unless you know what to look for, it's harder to compare two headsets with different codecs, as another variable that affects audio quality and delay. While many non-audio/non-keyboard devices have thankfully moved from BT classic to BTLE, mostly in order to avoid Apple's MFI program, there's been a bit of a lag in getting audio devices to switch over from classic to LE due to the high inertia of technological laziness. However, in the last few years, a Really Good Reason to move over has been invented: AirPods! (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MME73AM/A/airpods-3rd-generation) Yep, when Apple came out with their new wireless Bluetooth earbuds, they had to come up with a custom BTLE protocol - because there's two sinks and one source, and even if you created two connections (one for left and one for right) the source would have to work hard to synchronize audio. Sure Apple can put the time and money into that kind of development, but what about everyone else who wanted to make similar products? That's why when BTLE audio came 'free' with multi-point transmission and synchronization and an improved free codec, folks' ears started perking up. With Nordic's new nRF5340 ADK (https://www.digikey.com/short/vm7q7fwz), creating advanced BTLE Audio applications is super fast. The nRF5340 is a dual core ARM processor, which means it's easy to have one core dedicated to codec management and DMA audio streaming, and the other core for interfacing and control. The free software examples (https://developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/applications/nrf5340_audio/README.html) come with two main demos right now: a synchronous example for making wireless earbuds, and a broadcast example for sending audio to multiple sinks. Note that for these examples you'll often want two ADKs so you can stream audio to both ADKs as a way to mimic earbuds, for example. And, have you heard the good news? Digi-key has a TON of the nRF5340 Audio Development Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/vm7q7fwz) in stock right now for immediate shipment. Each ADK has all the accessory hardware needed to immediately bootstrap your BTLE example project. (Hint, it's also a great dev board for general nRF5340 development, with SD card, built in debugger, power management, Arduino-esque headers, RGB LEDs, and user interface buttons. Pick up two of these dev kits today and you can be jammin' and boppin' by tomorrow afternoon!
