This week's EYE ON NPI lifts up its skinny arms like antennas to heaven - it's the Taoglas family of Wide Band Antennas, featuring the Taoglas WARRIORX PA.760.A (https://www.digikey.com/short/td8wnqd2) with a chonky 600MHz-6000MHz range of functionality, for use with almost any kind of IoT wireless protocol. Wide band antennas are needed these days because we've moved from simple cellular devices like 2G/GSM that use at most a 'quad band' of 850/900/1800/1900MHz (which you'll note has two narrow bands that are 2x the frequency) in order to cover the globe, to multi-band and multi-protocol modules. If you have something with LTE which has close to 100 different bands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_frequency_bands) that span from 700 MHz up to 2.6GHz (https://www.sqimway.com/lte_band.php) depending on the LTE Category they cover. Lower categories carry data slower like simple machine IoT signals but farther, higher categories carry faster data like video but cant reach very far. You could also use this sort of antenna for multi-protocol IoT devices. Lets say you have a horse farm in Ireland (https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=irish+horse+farm) you want to monitor. You've got 50 horses, roaming your property. You want to know their location so you can locate them, maybe some details like their temperature and recent activity (e.g. an accelerometer). Since you're a ways out from the city, you may want to use a combination of WiFi if they are within a couple miles of the farm, cellular if they're a few miles away but still within LTE Cat 1M range, and LoRaWan if they're a good ways out. (In this particular case we aren't outfitting the horses with satellite connectivity). WiFi is free, LTE is fairly inexpensive but reliable if within range, LoRaWan is lower reliability but can be used in a meshing setup. Each one has a different frequency band: 2.4GHz for WiFi, maybe 1.9GHz for LTE, and 900MHz for LoRa. Let's say you invent such a thing, and now horse lovers around the world are clamoring, nay, DEMANDING you sell them your ingenious invention. With GSM, you can easily deploy worldwide with a single design. But with LTE you'll need to make sure each country you ship to can support the cellular module you've chosen. You may end up swapping similar-package-but-different-frequency-band modules for Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, etc. However, you can stick with that same Taoglas antenna! These antennas are SMT, pick-and-place friendly, so you can use them in plastic enclosures without knobbly external antennas that catch on things. Picking the right antenna will get you better battery life, better range, and faster response times for 'free', so its important to give one with the best gain you can get. We got a few samples of these very nifty USB C cables - there's a Type C plug on one end and a DC 2.5mm/2.1mm on the other. On the plug is etched a voltage and current range. inside is a USB C PD chip that negotiates to try and get the selected voltage and current out of a USB C power plug with Power Delivery management, and it works! we got 9V, 12V, 15V and 20V cables and tested it with our 3A test load and the cables had almost no drop. these could be super handy for getting significant power from USB C without having to do the noodling of programming or configuring a PD chip. coming soon to the adafruit shop! We got some samples of Nanjing Qinheng Microelectronics http://www.wch-ic.com/ CH9102F and it's pretty much a drop in replacement for Silicon Labs https://www.silabs.com/ CP201x USB to serial chips. A new driver install is needed but its the same pinout and package - great for us because we're having difficulty getting CP210x chips in enough quantity to keep our stock of ESP32 Feathers available for sale! We tested it on Windows and a Mac M1 to make sure uploads at 921kbps still work - next up we'll see if it works on Linux. If so, you may see some of our boards come with this chip in the adafruit shop soon. This week's EYE ON NPI is getting fit and staying healthy, with ams OSRAM's AS7038RB Biosensor Solution with Embedded ECG Channel (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/ams/as7038rb-biosensor-solution). This all-in-one biological sensing and health sensor combines an optical PPG (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photoplethysmogram) pulse oximetry sensor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse_oximetry) with electrical ECG front end (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrocardiography) as well as skin temperature reading with a low cost NTC thermistor, and conductivity - a.k.a GSR - so you can get a lot of heart and blood health information in one convenient package. This is very nice and cost-effective as usually there's one sensor to manage the optical blood-gas sensing and one to do the electrical heart activity sensing and maybe other sensors for skin temperature and conductivity. However, for telemedicine or self-monitoring, it might be beneficial to see the electrical activity waveforms as well as the SpO2 measurements since they can signify different health issues. Even though we are highlighting the AS7038RB (https://www.digikey.com/short/mjq0vjrn) we also want to point out the AS7030B (https://www.digikey.com/short/z308w2wr) which is a 'modularized' version of the 'RB but with a plastic body and three emitter LEDs for an even simpler installation. We're particularly fond of any PPG sensor that has both the emitter and detector diodes built into the package, it makes sourcing and tuning a lot easier! With the proliferation of smart watches and wristbands, many are now including optical sensors on the bottom - and this sensor is a great way to add that capability to your design without a ton of extra components or work. Pulse oximetry, especially, has become an essential home measurement for folks who have COPD or have tested positive for COVID as low blood oxygen and high pulse rate indicate cardiovascular damage that sometimes the patient doesn't even notice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_hypoxia). A full time wearable PPG using the AS703x would be great for detecting hypoxia even if the patient forgets to check their pulseox. This sensor comes jam packed with many built in filters and configuration registers to tweak the LED current, optical sensor gains, low pass, high pass, offset and drift reduction. This is usually the hardest part of getting PPG/ECG data in a pure-digital system: filters and offsets can be easy to implement in analog-land but annoying for a microcontroller to continuously calculate while also trying to stay in a low power mode. Instead, that work is done so that clean data can be read from I2C directly when ready. There's also a Feather-friendly eval board available for purchase (https://ams.com/as703x-eval-kit), with a built in Particle Argon Feather board for fast IoT prototyping using the default ams Windows application. The app lets you tweak and set various values and gives some good starting points, especially for customers with different skin tones! Sounds great, right? This week's EYE ON NPI should be on *your* radar - it's InnoSenT's 24 GHz IMD-2000 Radar Sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/innosent/imd-2000-radar-sensor) This all-in-one sensor is easy to integrate into your next product and brings high-tech radar sensing to an affordable range. Radar is literally "Radio Detecting And Ranging" - a way of bouncing 'high frequency' electromagnetic waves off of objects to detect the reflection. We're familiar with radar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar) in a few contexts: originally developed for military use, it worked great for detecting metal things in the sky (airplanes) as they would approach a city to possibly bomb it. We still use it a lot in military contexts: detecting planes, bombs, boats and submarines. It's also super handy in domestic contexts like air traffic control, if you can detect planes you can verify their positions and make sure each one comes in or out of the airport without collision. Radar is also useful for weather pattern detection (although this sensor isn't good for that purpose, just a fun fact for you to know) Another common purpose for radar you're probably familiar with is the dreaded speeding radar gun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_speed_gun) a small-enough-to-be-handheld radar device that can be pointed at a car to determine its speed without requiring a difficult-to-calculate "time between two points" measurement. These reliable devices (which apparently now are replaced with LIDAR based ones!) Now, most folks who have used IR sensors, Time of Flight, or sonar sensors can understand how to detect an object by counting the delay between sending a signal vs when its received and dividing by the wavelength. How can you determine velocity - normally you'd need to detect location twice, then determine the time between the two locations whereas radar can do it one measurement. This is thanks to the 'Doppler effect' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect) the same scientific principle that causes ambulance sirens to be higher pitch as they approach and lower pitch as they drive away from you due to the 'bunching up' of the waves as the wave source moves. Likewise with Radar, the frequency will shift slightly depending on the speed of the object, which can be detected by calculating the minute variation in frequency. Radar sensors are often used in similar cases as IR, ToF, sonar or LIDAR sensors: for detecting objects or motion or distance. Compared to IR, Radar will give you a much longer range and will work with a wider range of objects without being affected by ambient light, object color or shininess. Compared to ToF you'll get velocity, long range. Sonar is longer range than IR or ToF but has a wide spread. LIDAR is very comparable but is new and more expensive - Radar is easy to implement and low cost by comparison. And this Radar module is particularly easy to use because unlike many cheap modules that only give you a pulse signal that has to be massaged and measured to determine object distance and/or speed, this one has an FTDI-cable (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/70/9092299) compatible UART signal out. Simply provide 5V power and you'll get 250 kbps TTL signal out with a listing of objects, distances and velocities. This makes it trivial to integrate with any computer or microcontroller. We like to use our Pretty Pins generator to make lovely and *accurate* diagrams of dev boards. It starts with the Fritzing object (which is generated from the original Eagle files), and then cross references the Arduino and CircuitPython variant definition file to get the true pin names of each exposed pad and signal. Finally it looks up the multiplexing functionality for that gpio pin on the chip in a spreadsheet to generate the lovely label boxes. The pinmux spreadsheet has to be made by hand but we finally got around to doing the massive table used for the SAMD51 so we can now generate Pretty Pins for all SAMD51-based designs. Thanks to unexpected maker, we got a Hot Tip on how they had the same issue but fixed it with some pi network tuning! Tuning for an antenna can take swapping out a range of capacitors to get the best performance. The best way to do that is to get a RF capacitor kit, so you can try lots of different values quickly! Let's find a kit for 0402 sized capacitors that range from about 1 to 10pF and are C0G/NPO precision. We were looking at WCH @Patrick_RISCV for a USB to serial chip to replace the CP210x, when we remembered a lot of chatter a few years ago about the CH552 series of ultra-low-cost 8051 microcontrollers with native USB. you can kinda sorta code these with Arduino https://hackaday.io/project/172143-ch55xduino and we thought it could be an interesting QT Py since it has so few pins but does cover the basic use cases: 4 ADC, UART, SPI and maybe even I2C with a bitbang connection? Still, for very very basic USB projects maybe it would be useful, particularly since it has a ROM USB bootloader. Here's a simple design we whipped together. Since there isn't a lot of muxing or IO available, MISO and A2 share the same pin. Some interesting unusual things to watch for: reset is backwards from how we'd expect, and bootloader mode is entered by pulling D+ to 3V? Any CH55x experts out there who want to take a look and see if we got it all wired right? This weekend we took a day trip out to NJ to visit the InfoAge / Camp Evans historical district in Belmar NJ. This collection of buildings is on a former defense site on the coast and is both host to the VCF East festival AND has a ton of really cool museums and historical artifacts including an epic vintage radio/television museum, an amazing working historical computer collection, maker space, a massive military jeep and tank collection, and more!
