Desk of Ladyada - Metro Mini Redux + Some Sensors
Hey remember when we were revising all our CP2014 boards for the CP2102N? Next up is the metro mini (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2590) an Atmega328 board that we use often for breadboardy Arduino projects. like other boards that need a respin, we approached it with a "well, while we're here, lets do a gut renovation" - so in addition to swapping the usb serial chip, we also changed the USB to type C, changed some 0805 parts to 0603, and added a STEMMA QT port. one other change is we are having some difficulties getting the 32-TQFN of the '328, but we did snag about 8000 of the 28-TQFN so this 'V2' uses that part for now. it really is a 'design with what you can get' time! We also played with the AGS02MA gas sensor and wrote some drivers for it, and started on the code for our GUVB I2C UV sensor we designed a while back since it's nice and sunny for testing! The Great Search - White LED strand backlight constant current driver (FAN5333 replacement) https://www.digikey.com/short/78btttb0 Another day, another part we can't get! This week we're on the hunt for a replacement for the FAN5333 (https://www.digikey.com/short/bc3jrj8w), a constant-current, 24V boost converer that we use for our TFT displays with big back lights like the 4.3" touchscreen(https://www.adafruit.com/product/1591). These displays often have 6 or 7 white LEDs in series, and sometimes multiple strands of them! That means boosting 3.3V or 5V up to 22VDC with 50 to 100mA of current. That's a lot of power! Let's find a good alternative at Digi-Key so we can keep making display breakouts that folks love - ideally one that is drop-in compatible with the FAN5333 or at least one with minimal design changes required. EYE on NPI - Renesas FS1015 Air Velocity Module
This week's EYE ON NPI can measure the air-speed velocity of an unladen European swallow (https://interestingengineering.com/science/monty-python-and-the-holy-grail-airspeed-velocity-of-an-unladen-swallow), it's the Renesas FS1015 Air Velocity Module,(https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/fs1015-3000-air-velocity-modules) a nifty sensor that can measure air-speed velocity up to 15 meters/second. What's interesting about this sensor is it does not use an impeller like many flow sensors we've seen (https://www.adafruit.com/product/833) or air cups like a wind-speed sensor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1733). Instead, there's a MEMS thermopile sensor that can detect flow across it and generate a signal to indicate wind speed. The FS1015 looks like it's a next-generation version building off of the IDT FS1012 (https://www.digikey.com/short/7jdv3w9p) which also uses the same technology (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wvr7aszwRPU) but is designed for liquid or gas. So if you want a similar version of this sensor but with a barbed tubing connection, check out the FS1012/FS2012. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/idt/fs1012-fs2012-high-performance-mems-flow-sensor-modules) Both of these families of sensors use a silicon-carbide covered sensor with no cavities or moving parts, so there's less risk of clogging or mechanical wear. Compared to the earlier FS1012, the FS1015 module is mountable with 5 pins, and has both analog and digital I2C output, making it great for use with just about any microcontroller or microcomputer board. There's also mounting ears for quick attachment. The pins are 0.1" spacing so they're easy to use with a cable extender or plugged into a perf/breadboard. There's two models (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/fs1015-3000-air-velocity-modules), both have 12-bit digital output, but one ranges up to 7.5m/s and the other is 15m/s - so pick which one gives you the range and resolution best matching your expected setup. The I2C digital interface is simple and reliable: the sensor continuously measures the air speed, and when requested, will send 5 bytes of data over I2C on address 0x50. Three bytes are CRC/checksum, and two bytes make up the 12-bit reading. We were able to whip up an Arduino demo to read the air speed in 5 minutes - just request 5 bytes every 10 ms and plot it out! For quick, reliable and easy-to-interface air-speed velocity sensing, the Renesas FS1015 Air Velocity Module (https://www.digikey.com/short/pdw5q784) will do a great job without the risk of a mechanical failure. It's easy to add to any system with I2C or analog inputs, and has a nice enclosure design to boot. Best of all, it's in stock right now at Digi-Key! (https://www.digikey.com/short/pdw5q784) Order today and Digi-Key will ship it out faster than a swift so that you can be integrating it by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search - Skinny Micro SD card holder for Raspberry Pi Cowbells
We have a tried-and-true microSD card holder (https://www.digikey.com/short/4tmnwh) that we have been using for all our designs, it's a SMT push-pull design that has a lot of source variants, so it's great for everyday usage. We even covered it on a previous Great Search (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/02/02/the-great-search-micro-sd-card-holder-thegreatsearch-digikey-adafruit-digikey-adafruit/). But now we have to go back and source again - because for our new Raspberry Pico Cowbell add-on plans, we need a much skinner design that will fit between the SMT headers that will keep the Pico attached and we're about 1mm too wide! No problem, we looked around our parts bin to see what some other products we have use one and liked the one on the Teensy boards, which are also pretty skinny - let's source something equivalent and get it loaded it to our CAD software for usage. PCF8574 final revision assembly speedup
just before sending off our PCF8574 gpio expander breakout board, we noticed that the package we were using (QFN) was no longer available...but we COULD get the TDFN version. so a lil swapperoo and reroute occurred right before ordering the panels. super risky because we didn't test the footprint but we were pretty confident. anyways, we did want to test before our big initial fabrication run so this is us snapping off a board and hand-pasting. turned out great and we'll be making this breakout next week! The Desk of Ladyada - Bells of the Ball
Hey everyone! we are back at our desk, its toasty out so we're staying in during the day and cranking out some designs. one project we think we might be able to work on this summer is a de-zombification of the EZ-Link and EZ-Key boards from many years ago. these bluetooth classic boards rocked but suffered from using a really frustrating development and sourcing process. so we're gonna try to 'port' the designs from CSR to ESP32. this week we also started working on some cowbells! we have a proto-'bell done and we tacked it onto a proto pcb order, and we're also starting to work on a TFT 'bell. The Great Search - Skinny Micro SD card holder for Raspberry Pi Cowbells https://www.digikey.com/short/tbzw10jt We have a tried-and-true microSD card holder (https://www.digikey.com/short/4tmnwh) that we have been using for all our designs, it's a SMT push-pull design that has a lot of source variants so it's great for everyday usage. EYE on NPI - ABLIC S-35710/20 Series Convenience Timer ICs
This week's EYE ON NPI is OK with you going back to sleep...shhh! Rest up, it'll wake you up when it's time to go...we're reviewing the new ABLIC S-35710/20 Series Convenience Timer ICs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/ablic/s-35710-20-series-convenience-timer-ics). These are a great solution for when you need to turn a non-low-power system into something that sips power. When we first started on our embedded electronics journey, with boards like the Arduino, power management wasn't a high priority: you'd plug something into DC or USB power and it would sit there blinking lights or moving servos. Even if you did have a battery-powered project, those same LEDs or motors would be so high-power consuming that trying to optimize power wouldn't be a great use of time: anyways the regulator and chip are just not designed to be low power (https://analysisnorth.com/articles/arduino-for-a-year.html) and would need replacing, something that would add significant cost. For many years, folks were basically ok with this arrangement! Chips did start having sleep modes, but it was not surprising that one would have to re-design or spend more just to get low power performance. Then, with the proliferation of low cost and low-power-optimized WiFi (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/espressif-systems) and BLE chipsets (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/nordic-semiconductor) plus low cost LiPo batteries, the demand for devices that can last for days or weeks on a rechargeable battery became a roar. Now it's expected that any design can become a low power one. OK cool - but what if you're dealing with a chip or module that does not have ultra low sleep - say you want to use the cool new Pico W from Raspberry Pi - but the RP2040 chip's sleep current is 0.2mA (https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=316458). That's low but perhaps not low enough for your needs. The ESP32 series, by comparison, can hibernate at 0.005mA / 50uA, 1/25th the current. But perhaps even that is considered too much! Or perhaps it's the regulator that is drawing more current - 50uA or more is pretty normal for an LDO. That's where the ABLIC S-353710/20 Series Convenience Timer ICs comes in! (https://www.digikey.com/short/z952dntf) If your use case has consistent and periodic wake-ups, these chips can be programmed via I2C to wake up every 'n' seconds with a 24 bit counter. That means you can go from 1 second to 2^24 seconds, 194 days! The output can control a power transistor or enable-pin for your power system, to give you the lowest-possible current draw: since the chip can run from 2 to 5V, just power it directly from your battery input. Current draw is about 0.2uA, which beats even the lowest-power microcontrollers or LDOs. There are three versions of this family, the S-353720 (https://www.digikey.com/short/r797trjn) which uses two pins to set fixed wake-times of 1, 10, 30 and 60 seconds. We recommend the MSOP version of the S-353710 (https://www.digikey.com/short/f2j7dhqp) which is I2C programmable up to 194 days. Finally, there's also the SOIC version of the S-353710 (https://www.digikey.com/short/dj9tzz1q) which is basically the same as the MSOP one, but has a built in crystal for simpler assembly but higher cost. No matter which version you choose, all types of ABLIC S-353710/20 Series Convenience Timer ICs (https://www.digikey.com/short/z952dntf) are in stock at Digi-Key for immediate shipment! Order today and they will not snooze even 1 second before packing your order and sending it to you, so you can get working on optimizing your design to the lowest power possible by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search - Power-on-reset in sot23-3 , a replacement for APX803-26SAG
https://www.digikey.com/short/cp05vd44 Many devices and sensors like it if you give them a fancy reset pulse after power has come up, particularly displays and OLEDs! But sometime for wiring simplicity we would like to skip using a microcontroller pin, and have the breakout board autoreset on power loss. In such cases we use a 'power on reset' chip such as the APX803-26SAG https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/APX803-26SAG-7/2285963 . It's worked great but....it's now discontinued! Lets find a drop-in replacement. We will need a SOT-23-3 with pin 1 ground, pin 2 open-drain reset and pin 3 VCC. The reset pulse should be about 100ms, VCC should be able to be 3 to 5V, and the reset level about 2.7V, and hold down the reset line for at least 10ms. The challenge is there's a lot of options, but they're not all function/pin compatible! EYE on NPI Analog Devices' MAX98365 14 V plug-and-play digital Class-D amplifier
This week's EYE ON NPI is bumpin' the tunez, it's Analog Devices (nee Maxim) MAX98365 Amplifier, a 14 V plug-and-play digital Class-D amplifier with a highly flexible digital audio interface that supports just about any kind of digital encoding. This amplifier has a wide input power range, wide logic voltage range, and can handle just about any digital audio formatting you want to throw at it: The digital audio interface is highly flexible. The devices support I2S, left-justified, and 8-channel TDM data formats. The digital audio interface accepts 8 kHz, 16 kHz, 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz, and 192 kHz sample rates. Data words can be 16-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit in I2S and left-justified modes and 16-bit or 32-bit in TDM mode. Digital audio interface input thresholds are ideal for interfacing to 1.2 V and 1.8 V logic. The devices can tolerate logic input voltages up to 5.5 V. The NPI's part number, the MAX98365 (https://www.digikey.com/short/m85rvjwh), sounds similar to an I2S amp chip we've been using for a while - the MAX98357 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/3006/6058477) - and to no surprise, this chip seems to be an upgrade to the original amp. Both are single, class-D amplifiers, but the new chip has much better power supply range: 3V to 14V instead of 3 to 5V, which also allows it to max out the speaker power at around 14 W into a 4 or 8Ω load with 10% Total Harmonic Distortion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_harmonic_distortion). For 1% THD you can go up to 14W in 4Ω or 8W into 8Ω. The nifty thing this chip can do is swap formats based on the kind of signal it gets - which means you can use it in a range of designs. Most folks tend to use I2S, but left-justified or 8-channel TDM is also supported. It does this by auto-detecting the signal frequencies and pulse types. It also has the nicety of no MCLK pin required - which will be nice to hear for folks using this with single board Linux computer like Raspberry Pi that do not have MCLK output. Also, you get to save a pin if you are using I2S on a microcontroller! (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-max98357-i2s-class-d-mono-amp/circuitpython-wiring-test) OK, so this chip is quite magical, but there's one thing to watch for - it's only available in a chip-wafer-scale BGA package with 0.4mm pitch (https://pdfserv.maximintegrated.com/package_dwgs/21-100536.PDF). This makes it great for embedding in tiny devices, but rough for prototyping. So you may want to check out the MAX98365AEVSYS eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX98365AEVSYS/16187640) which can at least get you set up before you start routing. Next up, even if you are not too scared of 0.4mm pitch, the gain select pin is in the center, which means you can at least avoid plugged vias if you're willing to live with a fixed gain. If you want a itsy-bitsy-tiny-winy amplifier with great output, wide support for different formats, and class-D efficiency, the Analog Devices MAX98365 Amplifier is a great pick! And, best of all, it's in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key. (https://www.digikey.com/short/m85rvjwh) Order today and you will be blasting the hit song of the summer by tomorrow afternoon
