The Great Search - Power-on-reset in sot23-3 , a replacement for APX803-26SAG
https://www.digikey.com/short/cp05vd44 Many devices and sensors like it if you give them a fancy reset pulse after power has come up, particularly displays and OLEDs! But sometime for wiring simplicity we would like to skip using a microcontroller pin, and have the breakout board autoreset on power loss. In such cases we use a 'power on reset' chip such as the APX803-26SAG https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/APX803-26SAG-7/2285963 . It's worked great but....it's now discontinued! Lets find a drop-in replacement. We will need a SOT-23-3 with pin 1 ground, pin 2 open-drain reset and pin 3 VCC. The reset pulse should be about 100ms, VCC should be able to be 3 to 5V, and the reset level about 2.7V, and hold down the reset line for at least 10ms. The challenge is there's a lot of options, but they're not all function/pin compatible! EYE on NPI Analog Devices' MAX98365 14 V plug-and-play digital Class-D amplifier
This week's EYE ON NPI is bumpin' the tunez, it's Analog Devices (nee Maxim) MAX98365 Amplifier, a 14 V plug-and-play digital Class-D amplifier with a highly flexible digital audio interface that supports just about any kind of digital encoding. This amplifier has a wide input power range, wide logic voltage range, and can handle just about any digital audio formatting you want to throw at it: The digital audio interface is highly flexible. The devices support I2S, left-justified, and 8-channel TDM data formats. The digital audio interface accepts 8 kHz, 16 kHz, 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz, and 192 kHz sample rates. Data words can be 16-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit in I2S and left-justified modes and 16-bit or 32-bit in TDM mode. Digital audio interface input thresholds are ideal for interfacing to 1.2 V and 1.8 V logic. The devices can tolerate logic input voltages up to 5.5 V. The NPI's part number, the MAX98365 (https://www.digikey.com/short/m85rvjwh), sounds similar to an I2S amp chip we've been using for a while - the MAX98357 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/3006/6058477) - and to no surprise, this chip seems to be an upgrade to the original amp. Both are single, class-D amplifiers, but the new chip has much better power supply range: 3V to 14V instead of 3 to 5V, which also allows it to max out the speaker power at around 14 W into a 4 or 8Ω load with 10% Total Harmonic Distortion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_harmonic_distortion). For 1% THD you can go up to 14W in 4Ω or 8W into 8Ω. The nifty thing this chip can do is swap formats based on the kind of signal it gets - which means you can use it in a range of designs. Most folks tend to use I2S, but left-justified or 8-channel TDM is also supported. It does this by auto-detecting the signal frequencies and pulse types. It also has the nicety of no MCLK pin required - which will be nice to hear for folks using this with single board Linux computer like Raspberry Pi that do not have MCLK output. Also, you get to save a pin if you are using I2S on a microcontroller! (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-max98357-i2s-class-d-mono-amp/circuitpython-wiring-test) OK, so this chip is quite magical, but there's one thing to watch for - it's only available in a chip-wafer-scale BGA package with 0.4mm pitch (https://pdfserv.maximintegrated.com/package_dwgs/21-100536.PDF). This makes it great for embedding in tiny devices, but rough for prototyping. So you may want to check out the MAX98365AEVSYS eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX98365AEVSYS/16187640) which can at least get you set up before you start routing. Next up, even if you are not too scared of 0.4mm pitch, the gain select pin is in the center, which means you can at least avoid plugged vias if you're willing to live with a fixed gain. If you want a itsy-bitsy-tiny-winy amplifier with great output, wide support for different formats, and class-D efficiency, the Analog Devices MAX98365 Amplifier is a great pick! And, best of all, it's in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key. EYE on NPI – Jonard Tools' Rapid Microduct Deburring Tool
This week's EYE ON NPI will easily smooth your day, clearing out all those nicks and scratches that have built up, with a Jonard Tools Rapid Deburring Tool (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/j/jonard-tools/rapid-microduct-deburring-tool). We were first introduced to one of these tools at the Media Lab, where we immediately fell in love with the easy-to-use tool that cleans up edges and curves with a smooth swipe. Deburring tools are traditionally used for cut tubing and pipe, to get rid of the gunk left over from saw cuts. But they're also excellent for cleaning up drill holes / making countersinks, and for 3D printed parts where-ever you want to smooth corners and edges. We've even used them to enlarge holes if you just need a li'l more clearance! Using a deburring tool (https://www.digikey.com/short/3jvhv79m) is simple - the blade snaps into a smoothly rotating roller bearing, so you can replace it when it gets dull. Insert or place the blade against the edge to clean up, then swipe while using your thumb to supporting a smooth motion. It might take a few tries your first time to get the hang of the pressure needed to make an even slice. The sharp blade can be used on various metals and plastics - anything softer than stainless steel. Jonard’s deburring tool is designed for deburring the insides of microduct tubes. This tool is perfect for preparing the insides of fiber optic microduct tubes for termination and removing debris from 3D printed parts. Replacement blades made from tempered high-speed steel (HSS) are also available. EYE on NPI – 3M Cushion Lock™ Protective Wrap and Dispenser
This week's EYE ON NPI is a cushy new way to wrap and protect products during shipping and storage, without mess or waste - it's the 3M Cushion Lock™ Protective Wrap and Dispenser (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/cushion-lock-protective-wrap-and-dispenser)! This combo kit of die-cut paper and strong steel dispensing equipment is a great alternative to messy, wasteful or hard-to-recycle packaging materials like packing peanuts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foam_peanut), bubble wrap (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_wrap), air packs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflatable_air_cushion), foam balls, or old newspapers. And you don't need any special installations like compressed air or overhead dispenser bins to use it, so it's perfect for companies from 1-maker-in-a-room up to 10,000-packages-a-day-in-a-warehouse. The most common packaging materials folks use are also the most annoying to transport: packing peanuts and bubble wrap ship pre-inflated so they're massive. Even if they're light, they still take up a lot of space! there are more compact systems like inflate-on-demand sealed air pillows (https://www.sealedair.com/products/protective-packaging/inflatable-air-pillows) but now you need special air system which costs $1000's and is probably quite loud during operation. In comparison, the Cushion Lock ships as a dense roll of die-cut paper, 1000 foot rolls can ship UPS ground from Digi-Key and arrive in a few days. (https://www.digikey.com/short/2tf383mf) When loaded into the dispenser, the paper expands as you pull, and the die cut has li'l saw-teeth that grabs onto itself when wrapped to keep the 3D matrix 'puffy'. It looks like the Geami stuff that Digi-Key includes as a free cat toy with each order (https://www.evilmadscientist.com/2009/digi-key-sends-cat-toys/) but bulkier. We're investigating sustainable packaging at Adafruit (https://www.adafruit.com/sustainability) and it's great to see easier-to-recycle or compost-able packaging available from 3M (https://news.3m.com/Scotch-Cushion-Lock-Protective-Wrap-delivers-proven-packing-protection-without-the-guilt-of-plastic-all-in-one-simple,-efficient-product) - it has the same poofiness as air-puffed wrapping material, but without the wasteful shipping of pre-puffed-air or expensive inflating equipment. Combined with plain cardboard boxes, and lightweight plastic anti-static bags, this is one of the new options we'll be evaluating and we recommend other companies check out as well! This weekend we finally got back round to assembling/testing/coding up libraries for the LIS3MDL-replacement we found a few months ago: the MMC5603 https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/03/21/a-magnetometer-that-you-can-purchase/ We'll be using this in our replacement/updates for the Feather Sense and CLUE board. We also got a whole mess o prototype PCBs in, we can show them off. Finally, we're tuning and tweaking our workflow for how we do library development, and we look at maybe checking out github copilot for coding and openai for documention. The Great Search - Programmer/Debugger for ATSAMD21 Chips
This week we've got a request from someone who didn't manage to get a J-Link Mini EDU (https://www.digikey.com/short/rh972jb3) before the part shortage kicked in. These things were great for use for programming just about any ARM chip, and are very affordable for students! But you can't get them anymore. In particular this customer wanted to use Atmel Studio to program and step-debug ATSAMD chips - in which case we let them know about the very-handy AVR-ICE modules. Despite being called AVR In Circuit Emulator, they are also good for any Atmel/MCP Cortex chip. They're also the only debugger/programmer that is supported from within Atmel Studio. While the boxed ICE adapter is a lil expensive, there's a PCB-only board version we found, just don't forget to pick up a 10-pin SWD cable (https://www.digikey.com/short/r9tfpdn5) while you're there. NB: Yes, these are more expensive than your standard $20 CMSIS-DAP adapters, but if you are really spending a lot of time with AVR/SAM chips, they will save you a ton of time from having to fiddle with OpenOCD and we find they're worth the cost!
