For example, the popular INA219 breakout we make https://www.adafruit.com/product/904 has been traditionally used by us in a SOT-23-8 package...but its AWOL so what to do? Easy! we'll respin the board for allowing an SOIC version of the chip instead! this prototype has footprint pads for both, but all other connections and jumpers are in the same location so our testing procedure and usage should be drop-in equivalent.
