This week's EYE ON NPI is all about us giving you the skinny on an ultra-thin way to add wireless charging to your next design - it's TDK's WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil for Wireless Charging! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/tdk/ultrathin-pattern-coil-for-wireless-charging) This coil is less than a mm thick, and is designed to work with any and all Qi charging chips so you can add wireless charging without having to also design and manufacture a charging plate. If you have a modern smart phone, you may have noticed that it comes with built in wireless charging capability called 'Qi charging.' Qi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi_%28inductive_power_standard%29) is a trademark name for a thin and smart inductive charging system. Many large gadget companies have standardized on Qi, which means it's easy to find a charging dish - there's even charging plates in many cafe's or waiting rooms. Wireless charging has a few really good benefits (and one or two downsides). Most importantly, it's extremely convenient. Folks are more likely to forgive a design with a smaller battery / battery-life if charging can be done as easily as placing it on a table overnight. Secondly, it allows for a more water-proof design - handy for things like watches and headphones that may use BLE for data transfer. Normally you'd still need to plug in to charge, but now there's no need at all for a USB port! In addition, you get a lot less wear on the power connector, since every insertion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#Durability) adds the chance that the connector will get something jammed inside, or a contact worn out, or strain on the connector mechanics that lifts it off the PCB. Downsides of Wireless Charging is that, yes it adds some cost because you need a Qi chip and the matching antenna, and they both take up space in the build as well. Qi is also traditionally 5W which is good, but relies on having a good inductive link between the base and the device. Before Qi, you also had to design both sides of the link, (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1407) which was often not worth the extra effort when time-to-market is so important. Now with Qi you can use any off-the-shelf charging plate or transmitter module (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/2162/6827104). And this antenna is so thin you can easily fit it between your PCB assembly and the plastic enclosure. You might be surprised how easy it is to add Qi standard wireless charging these days, and with the TDK's WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil (https://www.digikey.com/short/z1r3jtrh) you don't have to make a ton of room. Add in a Qi wireless charging receiver chip (https://www.digikey.com/short/db3rp415) and you can have a magical user experience with no cables. This week on the Desk of Ladyada it's been a prototyping bonanza with a lot of work on testers and new designs. First up we wanted to wrap the tester for the CH9102F but found that part of our test is to check the DTR/DTS RTS/CTS pains and the Linux kernel driver for the CH343 family did not have CTS working! Thankfully we found an out-of-tree driver https://github.com/SoldierJazz/ch343ser_linux.git that does the job and allows us to perform the test procedure. Next up we put together prototypes for the EZ-Link ESP32 and tried out some code, like the CH9102F, there were some flow control issues to work out in the BT SPP stack but it works! Finally we test out the latest CircuitPython PicoW WiFi stack work, where there is slow-n-steady progress. For example, the popular INA219 breakout we make https://www.adafruit.com/product/904 has been traditionally used by us in a SOT-23-8 package...but its AWOL so what to do? Easy! we'll respin the board for allowing an SOIC version of the chip instead! this prototype has footprint pads for both, but all other connections and jumpers are in the same location so our testing procedure and usage should be drop-in equivalent. This week's EYE ON NPI is 'curing' your thermal interlock woes with a huge collection of different thermal monitoring sensors from KEMET (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/k/kemet/trs-series-and-ohd-series-thermal-sensors). These thermal relays are reliable and easy to spec and use in your design for either Make or Break on temperature-crossing. Use them as a simple temperature control system, or as a last-line-of-defense interlock. KEMET’s TRS and OHD thermal sensors (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/k/kemet/trs-series-and-ohd-series-thermal-sensors) are simple and reliable sensors that work using the Curie point property (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curie_temperature) - which we learned about in high school and had totally forgotten about until now. Basically, there are some magnetic materials where, when the temperature hits a certain point, the crystalline alignment of the material breaks down completely and the material become a-magnetic. We can take advantage of the Curie Point property to create a special kind of reed switch (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/magnetic-reed-switches/193). Normally reed switches are activated by an external magnetic field that is brought closer to the switch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H85MyhbcC0U) which pulls two two ferrous elements inside together to make contact. With these thermal sensors, the magnet is wrapped on the outside with interleaved Thermorite (https://www.digikey.my/en/articles/kemet-thermorite-temperature-sensor-built-in-on-off-reed-switch) tuned-Curie-point rings that either channel or break the magnetic field. So, say normally the reed switch inside is connected because there's a magnetic ring of Thermorite around it. When the temperature rises, and hits the Curie Point, the magnetic ring suddenly turns amagnetic, and the metal springs are no longer attracted to each other, opening the connection. A similar technique occurs for the Make type but with a clever interleaved Thermorite-sandwich instead. By tweaking the Thermorite contents, the switches can be tuned to different temperature ratings with 15 degree C binning (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/k/kemet/trs-series-and-ohd-series-thermal-sensors). KEMET also makes them in a variety of shapes with and without leads, and encased with UL listing. Wow we did a lil cleanout of some ~2 year old prototypes and found a bunch that were either forgotten or could not be made and now that there's a *slight* loosening of the parts shortage, we're able to wrap these up and get them into the shop: the ENS160 CO2 sensor, QT hub, QT level shifter, DS4420 are among the many we wrapped this week and ordered PCBs. This week's EYE ON NPI is a throwback to the 8-bit era, with a new spin on the classic AVR microcontrollers we've loved for decades: it's Microchip's AVR® DD Family of Microcontrollers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/microchip-technology/avr-dd-family-of-microcontrollers), a powerful update to the powerful and low-power AVR RISC core that came from Atmel. While many folks may be moving to Cortex M0 or RISC-V chipsets to get 32-bit performance, there's still a lot of demand and use for 8-bit microcontrollers. Cost, simplicity, reliability, code-size, and power usage can all be better on 8-bit. If you're only on a 32-bit micro because of peripherals that tend to come with the fancier chips, you might be surprised by what the AVR DD family has to offer. For example, these chips have external interrupts on (just about all) the GPIO pins. There's four 16-bit timers plus one 12-bit (that's *five* total timers!), SPI & I2C, two UARTs, a 10-bit DAC, and 12-bit input ADC that's muxed to almost every pin. In particular, the high-bit ADC and DAC are a little unusual to see in an 8-bit platform. (https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/aemDocuments/documents/MCU08/ProductDocuments/DataSheets/AVR32-16DD20-14-Prel-DataSheet-DS40002413.pdf) There's also some funky MCP-specific peripherals that can help reduce BOM cost. For example, CCL/LUT is a peripheral that allows you to make custom logic-lookup-tables for making simple - but very very fast - multi-input logic gates that can use interrupts or peripherals as input. (http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/AppNotes/TB3218-Getting-Started-with-CCL-90003218A.pdf) For example, you can make a SR latch, logic gate, or Manchester encoder - you can think of it as like a 'micro' PIO or CPLD. MVIO is a new capability that we haven't seen before, where an IO port can run at a different logic level - either higher or lower than the VCC power. This allows easy bi-directional interfacing of SPI/I2C/GPIO to 3V logic from 5V, or vice versa, without the use of level shifting! (http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/Appnotes/GettingStarted-MVIO-AVRDB-DS90003287A.pdf) Perfect if you want to run this main core at 5V for speed and signal strength, but have some 3V sensors to interface to, or run the core at 1.8V for power and IO but have a 3.4V LED you want to light up. Clock rate is up to 24 MHz, can be powered from 1.8 to 5.5V - it's exceedingly rare to find 5V ARM chips - and have FLASH, SRAM, EEPROM and NVM. EEPROM in particular is not common on ARM chips, and some don't even have built in Flash. So think of this as a compact li'l chip with pretty much everything you need to get a product out the door, with a range of memory sizes and physical packages from QFN to DIP! (http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/AVR-DD-Product-Brief-DS40002215A.pdf) It's nice to see Microchip is still innovating the AVR line, to make better 8-bit micros that power the electronics around us. For programming, of course you can use MPLAB IDE but we like Arduino compatibility and SpenceKonde's DxCore (https://github.com/SpenceKonde/DxCore) looks like it's adding or added AVR DD support, so you can quickly get going with compiling code and using the basic peripherals in just a few minutes! Best of all, the AVR DD family of parts (https://www.digikey.com/short/m4qb8wf8) are totally in stock at Digi-Key right now for immediate shipment. There's SOIC, SSOP and QFN packages with up to 64KB flash / 8 KB RAM, all for about $1.50 in individuals, $1 in qty. If you're looking for an alternative to the ATmega328, this is a nice step up. We recommend getting started with the AVR DD Curiosity Nano board which is breadboard compatible and has everything needed to get started. We've carried the CCS811 as a breakout board (https://www.digikey.com/short/87r2tq3f) for a while now, but the sensor itself is now discontinued! (https://www.digikey.com/short/0n58n301) We checked out the official replacement, ENS160 (https://www.digikey.com/short/db4fqrv3) but it's not in stock right now. We stock a few other gas sensors, but it's a good time for us to take a peek at what is new and available in this area. We've seen a big increase in MOX-based VOC sensors, sometimes with additional add-ins like temperature or humidity.
