Desk of Ladyada - EYESPI 2.8" TFT revision & Scorpio revisit

With prices of TFTs back down to earth we're doing a lot of revisions and updates for our TFT breakouts. This week we looked at the 2.8" TFT with capacitive touch. We revised the board to go from having SOIC to TSSOP 74VHC245 level shifters, and with the space left over added an EYESPI connector. We're also trying to wrap the RP2040 Scorpio feather - this is an RP2040 board that is designed for driving 8 strands of NeoPixels with the NeoPXL8 library. The Great Search - Resistor & Capacitor Packs https://www.digikey.com/short/58vwhvdn For the RP2040 SCORPIO, we have 8 level-shifted outputs that come out the end, and they may end up connecting to a looooong wire strand before hitting that first neopixel. To avoid ringing, we can add a small in-line resistor (say 100 ohm). But we are really tight on space! How can we fit 8 resistors into a 2mm wide strip of space? EYE on NPI: EPSON RX4901CE and RX8901CE Temperature Compensated Real-Time Clocks

Tick tock, it's time for this week's EYE ON NPI - this week we're on time and on budget with the EPSON RX4901CE and RX8901CE Real-Time Clocks. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/epson/rx4901ce-and-rx8901ce-real-time-clocks). These are two affordable yet ultra-high high precision temperature compensated Real Time Clocks - from EPSON who are well known for their quality crystal offerings (https://www.digikey.com/short/b0t2j2c5). Accurate time-keeping is something folks ask us about a lot - it's a lot harder than most people think! (It's sorta up there with voice recognition and 3D-indoor-spacial-tracking with "things that seem really common but actually are super tough) Most folks are used to alarm clocks that use the power line 60Hz sine wave to keep track of seconds, we've done that for plug-in clocks for almost a century (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_clock) And while the utility's mains frequency does fluctuate with load, its compensated overnight so average out to a near-perfect 60Hz (http://leapsecond.com/pages/mains/). If you don't have access to that 60Hz calibrated signal, say because you're battery powered, or using a switching supply, you have a few options for externally-validated time keeping. Some folks like the WWVB radio-signal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWVB) synchronization modules (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/10060) that receive an atomic-clock-accurate signal from Colorado. Others like to use a GPS module, which will get atomic-clock-accurate signals from spaaaaaaaaaace (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4279), finally of course, if you have Internet connectivity you can get time from NTP (https://www.ntppool.org/en/). All of these require a lot of power, and for GPS you need to have an outside antenna - or at least close to a window. WWVB works best in the middle of the country, but we've always had a little difficulty in a NYC apartment. If you want low-power or battery-powered time stamping and logging, a real time clock is the way to go. But these chips aren't sync'd to some global standard and they tend to have a lot of drift (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock_drift) - seconds a day, which adds up! This is due to the timing crystal having some variation, usually 10 to 20 ppm. 20 parts-per-million is the same as 20 / 1,000,000 * (24 * 60 * 60 seconds/day) = 1.7 s/day variability, or about a minute a month. So it really can add up! The RTC counter circuitry itself is perfectly accurate, so if we could make sure the crystal was perfect, we'd have no timing issues. To do that, we have to account for the temperature...thus bringing forth the invention of the TCXO Temperature Compensated Xtal Oscillator (https://www5.epsondevice.com/en/products/tcxo/) something that Epson is really good at making! So it's no surprise that they've packaged an RTC chip into one of their crystal-sized enclosures to create a sealed high precision RTC. And the price is really good too! We often see TCXO RTC's for $6-$8, whereas the Epson RX8901CE are $3.25 in quantity and they're also nice and compact, 3x2x2.5mm in size. EYE on NPI: Soracom Onyx LTE USB Dongle for IoT Applications

This week's EYE ON NPI soars above the rest, it's the Soracom Onyx LTE USB Dongle for IoT Applications (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/soracom/lte-usb-dongle-for-iot-applications), a nicely designed, easy-to-use cellular dongle that you can plug into your Windows or Linux single-board-computer to add cellular connectivity super fast. Onyx features a Quectel® EG25-G (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/quectel/EG25GGC-128-SGNS/13278144) LTE Cat. 4 module providing global 4G/LTE, 3G, and 2G cellular connectivity in a single device and is optimized specifically for IoT and M2M applications. While there are HATs and accessories to add cellular, this a pretty straight-forward board that won't require updates when there's kernel or GPIO driver dependencies - simply plug it into the USB port for data and power and run the Linux install script that they kindly provide.(https://developers.soracom.io/en/start/soracom/soracom-cli-guide/) Since Soracom is maker-and-geek friendly, they do better than just providing the hardware and saying "use the PPP modem capability" - for optimized data usage there's documentation on using the native MQTT stack (https://www.soracom.io/blog/sending-mqtt-messages-from-celllular-modem-via-at-commands/) which means even the lightest-weight device can use minimal data while sending sporadic messages - it may also be faster than bringing up a full TCP/IP stack and then tunneling MQTT over it - there's Python example code available too for automated scripting. Desk of Ladyada - Teensy Tester Redesigned to RP2040 Pico

This week we're looking to redesign our fancy 'tester brains' that we use for many of our microcontroller boards. We have three flavors of testers, the 'drop and beep' simple ones that use an Arduino / Metro as a base and do basic testing of some I2C sensor, the ones that use a Teensy 3.6 to SWD or ISP program a chip and then do a USB enumeration check, and finally the Raspi ones. We've got plenty of metros, and our stash of Raspi 3's is going fine but we've just about run out of Teensy 3.6's! Since we have a lot of microcontroller boards coming soon we wanted to make sure that we could revise this tester to use an RP2040 - it's definitely fast enough and has enough pins, but we needed to have a bitbang USB host implementation in order to test enumeration and/or communicate over CDC/HID/MSD with TinyUSB. Let's look at what we came up with. EYE on NPI: Amphenol T6793 CO2 Sensor Module

This week's EYE ON NPI is a breath of fresh air - with the Amphenol Telaire T6793 CO2 Sensor Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/amphenol-advanced-sensors/t6793-co2-sensor-module), another great sensor we are happy to highlight from Amphenol Advanced Sensor group (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/07/23/eye-on-npi-amphenol-ztp-148src1-thermal-sensor-eyeonnpi-digikey-adafruit-amphenolsensors/). This time it's a sensor to detect the concentration of CO2 in the air. Carbon dioxide, aka CO2, is a gas that is an essential part of the Earth's atmosphere and life in general. However, while essential, it can have negative effects when concentrations exceed certain level. It can impact the entire planet via global warming. But it can also have very local effects, for example on indoor air quality. Elevated levels of CO2 can lead to reduced cognitive ability and other health related concerns. Therefore, monitoring CO2 levels of inside air can be useful as a part of gauging general air quality. Folks have had CO2 air-quality sensors in buildings and homes for a long time but now they're extremely popular because CO2 levels are correlated with air freshness. Outdoor air is about 400 ppm CO2. Us humans love to breathe in air, extract the O2 and fill rooms with CO2. That means when there's poor ventilation to the outdoors, and lots of humans - the air is going to have higher and higher CO2 concentrations. (https://theconversation.com/how-to-use-ventilation-and-air-filtration-to-prevent-the-spread-of-coronavirus-indoors-143732) We consider under 1000 ppm to be 'good' but really we want to keep it under 600 ppm if we can since that has been shown to reduce transmission of airborne disease. (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ina.12639) There are two categories of CO2 sensors we see. One is the 'effective CO2' measurement, which is really a VOC sensor using doped MOX variable resistance sensors, and the other are 'true CO2' sensors which use NDIR. For example, the ENS160 breakout (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5606) we recently started stocking is a MOX sensor that will provide measurements of overall air quality based on volatile gases. It can also use this to approximate the CO2 concentration. But note it isn't actually measuring CO2! While this is fine for low cost or basic AQI measurements, it isn't a calibrated or reliable way to measure CO2. Instead, the right thing to do is use an NDIR sensor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondispersive_infrared_sensor) like the T6793 CO2 Sensor Module (https://www.digikey.com/short/h4278vt7), which is a 'true' CO2 sensor that will tell you the CO2 PPM (parts-per-million) composition of ambient air. That means it's a lot bigger and more expensive than eCO2 sensors, but it is the real thing. Perfect for environmental sensing, scientific experiments, air quality and ventilation studies, and more. The Amphenol T6793 CO2 Sensor Module (https://www.digikey.com/short/h4278vt7) is a true NDIR CO2 sensor, with self-recalibration if used outside where it will be exposed to 400ppm CO2 signal at least once a week, and comes in two versions, one with 2Kppm and one with 5Kppm maximums. It's highly stable, and accurate with +-45ppm + 3% of reading accuracy and continuous 5 second readings. One thing we really liked about this sensor is that it has multiple output modes, no matter what your system integration requires. The T6793 comes with a wide selection: 100KHz I2C, UART, RS485 and even PWM output! The module comes with a 6-pin 0.1" / 2.54mm pitch header so it can be swapped out of a larger system after a few years or if the sensor gets contaminated. The PWM pulse rates and I2C registers are documented in the app note (https://www.amphenol-sensors.com/en/telaire/co2/525-co2-sensor-modules/3399-t6713) and there is some some Arduino code available on GitHub for reference. The Great Search: Bright Side-emitting Infrared SMT LED

For a small STEMMA board we designed and prototyped, we'd like to have it emit powerful IR pulses to turn on/off remote control devices. We've used through-hole IR LEDs before, they are interesting in that they are usually pulsed at 100mA-1A of current (not your regular 20mA)! However, for this design to stay easy-to-use, we need to source SMT LEDs. So let's find a bright (80mW/sr or greater), infrared (940nm wavelength), side emitting LED. Desk of Ladyada - Ding Dong It's Time For PiCowbell!

At the desk this week, we've got a fevah and the only cure is testing out the proto picowbell we fabbed this week. This board got a little distracted over the few months as parts started to come in, but we improved it in the meantime - now it has both a reset button and QT/Qwiic port & a nice silkscreen. let's try it out with the new CircuitPython 8.0.0b2 release that adds Pico W WiFi support! We also have two stemma samples we put together: one is an IR blaster, and the other is a Si5351 QTification. The Great Search - Bright Side-emitting Infrared SMT LED https://www.digikey.com/short/5v5zvjvv For a small STEMMA board we designed and prototyped, we'd like to have it emit powerful IR pulses to turn on/off remote control devices. We've used through-hole IR LEDs before, they are interesting in that they are usually pulsed at 100mA-1A of current (not your regular 20mA)! However, for this design to stay easy-to-use we need to source SMT LEDs. So let's find a bright (80mW/sr or greater), infrared (940nm wavelength), side emitting LED.
