EYE on NPI: Digilent USB-2001-TC One Channel Thermocouple Measurement Device
This week's EYE ON NPI is on the right traq, ready to attaq, and gets no flaq: it's the Digilent USB-2001-TC Single Channel Thermocouple Measurement Device, otherwise known as a single-channel DAQ! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/d/digilent/usb-2001-tc-single-channel-thermocouple-measurement-device) These rhymes may get me some flaq, but we can't help it, our lips smaq when we see a good DAQ. And this one is deliciously small and single-purpose. We wish we had one of these a few weeks ago when we wanted to check our reflow oven to calibrate the temperature curve! While we are featuring this particular DAQ board that is good for high temperature measurements via a thermocouple, there's a whole family of boards from Digilent/NI (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/data-acquisition-daq/1017?s=N4IgTCBcDaICIEsDmCA2BTAdgFwAS4FcBnAIxAF0BfIA) All manufactured and supported by MCC (https://www.mccdaq.com/) - the OEM for this series. The others are a mix of Ethernet, Raspberry Pi or USB controlled ADCs & DACs (https://www.mccdaq.com/data-acquisition/low-cost-daq) with 12 to 24 bit resolution, and up to 500 kS/s. The USB DAQ board does not come with a thermocouple itself, you'll need to get a standard K, J, etc. type (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/temperature-sensors-thermocouples-temperature-probes/513) and also have it with a mini thermocouple plug which is available on Digi-Key if you are getting bare thermocouple wires (https://www.digikey.com/short/9hbfrwht). The thermocouple wire can come on huge spools if desired: spot weld one end that will be attached to the hot thing being measured, and then screw the other ends into the mini plug. Inside is Silabs C8051F343 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/silicon-labs/C8051F343-GQ/990818), Analog Devices ADUM5401 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc/ADUM5401ARWZ-RL/1873647) isolator, and an AD7785 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc/AD7785BRUZ-REEL/1644783) 20-bit ADC. Data can be captured using the DAQami software available for download on Windows (https://www.mccdaq.com/daq-software/DAQami.aspx) although it seems like you can also interface through the hardware using an API or Python (https://www.mccdaq.com/MCC-Software.aspx). Of course, since its a Digilent / National Instruments product, it's also fully supported within LabVIEW. (https://www.mccdaq.com/daq-software/universal-library-extensions-lv.aspx) While normally we're happy to talk about individual interface chips for DAC/ADC/Thermocouple interfacing (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=%23eyeonnpi+temperature), and there's tons of Adafruit guides on how to DIY this kind of data acquisition (https://learn.adafruit.com/search?q=thermocouple), it's pretty nice to have a ready-to-go USB device that streams data without having to open up an IDE or write any code at all. Particularly for automations where the data has to go into a computer anyways, it can save a lot of time to now cobble together your own setup. The Digilent USB-2001-TC Single Channel Thermocouple Measurement Device (https://www.digikey.com/short/23v0hp90) and other Digilent/MCC DAQs (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/data-acquisition-daq/1017?s=N4IgTCBcDaICIEsDmCA2BTAdgFwAS4FcBnAIxAF0BfIA) are stocked by Digi-Key! They sold out while writing this EYE ON NPI, but they'll have more soon, so sign up to be notified by email when they come back in stock.

PCB Scan - Toy Hacking! Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy
We're continuing on our quest to replace the brains of the Baby Einstein Take-a-Long Tunes toy with something that can play Autechre or Bjork. Since the last video, Mr Ladyada has scanned in the PCB so that we can start to trace the outlines. We used simple computer image editing software to delete the background, rotate it so its straight, and convert it to monochrome. After importing, we traced out the slots and holes so that our new PCB will be able to fit right in place. Now its time to spec some parts! Our big decision is what chipset to go with: we can't get SAMD21 or SAMD51's anymore, so our best bet is ESP32 series or RP2040. Since the case does not have a USB slot we have to have the USB port for programming on the inside and a few screws removed to do so. So we figured a WiFi-capable chip would be nice since then it could be programmed wirelessly. So we're gonna start with trying to place an ESP32-S2 (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=esp32-s2&sort=BestMatch) inside. For audio output we'll use the MAX98357 mono I2S amp (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3006) since the DAC on the -S2 isn't very good for audio playback. Now we just have to fit it all in and route the PCB! The Great Search: Mono I2S Audio Amplifier
On this week's Great Search, we're on the lookout for monophonic I2S amplifiers that we can use for our toy hacking project. Traditionally we've gone with the MAX98357 (https://www.digikey.com/short/cvn3052m) which is a rock-solid I2S Class D amplifier that we have used in boards and breakouts for many years. Are there any other options we should consider? Let's take a look at Digi-Key for some possible options that we'll try out! We test a tester for the Adafruit OV5640 camera breakout
Parallel-data camera breakouts are common, but we wanted to design a better one for video and image hacking. Details like i2c pullups, built-in 24mhz oscillator, auto-focus motor power supply, and a camera heatsinking power plane! Many cameras have the same FPC cable and pinout, making them easy to swap in and out. This one is a wide-angle OV5640, but the board will work with OV2640 and others. An ESP32-S2 Metro is used to grab frames from the camera and blit them to a 1.3" TFT screen. Check out the wide-angle OV5640 camera here: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5673. adafruit floppy featherwing has a rainbow ribbon
we had some time this weekend to write the floppy featherwing tester code. this board tests the inputs and outputs, that go through two level shifters so that the signals TO the floppy drive are shifted up to 5V and the signals FROM the floppy drive are lowered to a safe 3V. for this final version we added a write-protect switch that adds a hardware interlock protection to avoid accidentally writing to floppy disks when you want to only read from them. more floppy stuff will be making it into the shop soon! EYE on NPI: STMicroelectronics STM32C0x1 Series Entry-Level MCU
This week's EYE ON NPI is your next 8-bit microcontroller, it's STMicroelectronics STM32C0x1 Series Entry-Level MCU (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32c0x1-series-entry-level-32-bit-mcu) that gives developers a 32-bit Arm Cortex M0+ microcontroller at 8-bit microcontroller prices. These aggressively priced microcontrollers come just at the end of a 2-year chip shortage, so if you've been holding back a design, it could be a great time to swap out your 8051-based or other 8-bit microcontroller for a powerful Cortex M0+ that can use ST's supported firmware libraries and IDE. Most developers go with 8-bit microcontrollers to get a few basic needs met: maybe a few timers, ADC, GPIO and I2C or USART for interfacing. The benefits are low complexity in design, for example no crystal needed because there's an internal trimmed-RC oscillator, or a simple power supply with only one power pin so you don't need multiple regulators. 8051-based (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_8051) microcontrollers are popular as cores for their ultra-low cost and fairly-low power usage. But the programming environment tends to be archaic, and 8-bit code compiles chunky especially when dealing with floating points (https://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Number-from-Decimal-to-IEEE-754-Floating-Point-Representation) or large-integer math. If you ever have to do anything more complex like interpolate values or perhaps run a digital filter on your data, an 8-bit micro will be really annoying. Updating to the 32-bit, particularly the Arm Cortex line, will open up the whole universe of optimized and standardized libraries that CMSIS provides (https://developer.arm.com/tools-and-software/embedded/cmsis) The STM32C0 series is the lower-powered version of the STM32G0 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANogBsAHAEysgC6hADgC5QgQAXxFA0 - both are Cortex M0+ chips, but the C0 runs at 48MHz instead of the G0's 64 MHz. The chips are otherwise pin compatible at the low pin-count-end of 8 to 48 pins, the G0 keeps going up to 100 pins. There's 9 different packages, that also have increasing amounts of FLASH/SRAM, with either 16 or 32K of flash and 6 or 12K of RAM. For peripherals you'll get plenty of GPIO, DMA, four 16-bit timers, a 12-bit ADC with 13 channels and surprisingly-high 1.7 MSPS. SPI, I2S, two USART and one I2C. Note there's no USB on the C0 series, for that you'll need to upgrade to the STM 32G0x1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32-g0) We haven't featured a lot of microcontrollers on EYE ON NPI lately because we prefer to tell you about parts you can order immediately. The good news about STMicroelectronics STM32C0x1 Series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32c0x1-series-entry-level-32-bit-mcu) is that they're all in stock right now for immediate shipment (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/embedded/microcontrollers/685?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANrgAMAnAExgsgC6hADgC5QQIAL6igA) - in a wide variety of packages and memory options. And if you want to start verifying the parts for your firmware immediately, there's the STM32C0116-DK dev kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/STM32C0116-DK/17074591) in stock. Order your STM32C0x1 Series chips or developer kit today, and you can be revising your 8-bit microcontroller design to a 32-bit glow-up by tomorrow afternoon!

The Great Search: P-Channel MOSFET in a Small SMT Package
On this week's The Great Search, we're looking for a P-Channel MOSFET in a small SMT package to replace the classic SOT-23 one we use for all our Feathers. In this case, we're making a very compact board, so we need a smaller package! We've traditionally used the DMG2305 (https://www.digikey.com/short/4mtb0tz8) or DMG3415 (https://www.digikey.com/short/jdpmrcvc) as a high-current 3 or 4 Amp, 20V+, low 1Vgth, and low RdsOn of 50mOhm or less. Thankfully there's quite a few options on Digi-Key, let's look and compare what is available. EYE on NPI: WAGO 2601 Series Super-Compact PCB Terminal Blocks
This week's EYE ON NPI is clipped in and ready to roll, with WAGO 2601 Series Super-Compact PCB Terminal Blocks (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wago/2601-series-pcb-terminal-blocks) available in both horizontal (https://www.digikey.com/short/twfw2cjh) and vertical types (https://www.digikey.com/short/7t4fp5b5) and a wide range of widths. These terminal blocks feature WAGO's famed snap-lock levers for quick and secure connectivity with certified current handling that can support your high-current and high-voltage setups and a wide range of wire gauges. Terminal blocks (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/wire-to-board/371?s=N4IgTCBcDaIC4FMBOBbAlgOwIYBsAEARjgPYDGA1gM4gC6AvkA) are super common to find on any electronics product, especially used for power and motor connections where you need high current/voltage capabilities because every day connectors like JST PH's (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/S4B-PH-SM4-TB-LF-SN/926657) are only rated for a few Amps and it's common to need 5A or more for power/motor connectivity. Terminal blocks are also inexpensive, easy to use, and don't require custom connectors or crimping: any stranded or solid core wire will fit and work and you can rearrange wire order if necessary. Traditionally, we've used the side-entry-with-top-screw type of terminal block -- Digi-Key has a video that describes all the different types of terminal blocks you may encounter here (https://www.digikey.com/en/videos/c/cui/the-ultimate-guide-to-terminal-block-selection). However, it can be easy for folks to misuse them by not tightening enough, or accidentally inserting outside of the block's "mouth". Also, sometimes they're Phillips screw, sometimes they're Flathead - or folks end up stripping them by over-tightening or having the wrong size driver. These WAGO 2601 Series Super-Compact PCB Terminal Blocks (https://www.digikey.com/short/bnw5b3pz) are a super-fancy upgrade to classic terminal blocks. They're still the 3.5mm pitch of compact terminal blocks, but come with WAGO-quality levels that can be lifted with a finger to open the mouth, and snapped down in a moment. Two through-hole pins per contact give good mechanical stability when hand, selective or wave-soldered onto your board. Wires can be 26 to 16 AWG, and solid core wires can even be push-inserted in as long as they are 20AWG or thicker. (https://wago.priintcloud.com/datasheets/2601-1104/en_US/e75ede034608c38f290f16f29cacc6cc) Each contact can handle 300V and 10A, and the terminals are UL/IEC rated so you can trust their power capacities! In case you're wondering, if WAGO tests to figure out what happens if the ratings are exceeded, may we point you at this entertaining video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg6VPucscxI) where the engineers got to turn the WAGO block into a heat lamp! Best of all, the WAGO 2601 Series Super-Compact PCB Terminal Blocks (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wago/2601-series-pcb-terminal-blocks) are available and in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment in a range of widths and orientations. Upgrade your design for these awesome terminal blocks to make connections reliable and error-proof, if you order today you'll have any size you like by tomorrow afternoon!

Tutorial: Add Lights to your Costume with Adafruit n00ds
Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/light-up-your-costume-with-noods/overview Adafruit Noods are little noodles of light. They're as simple to use as a regular LED - connect one end to power and one end to ground, and they light up and glow. They're incredibly bendy and flexible, making them just perfect for small subtle costume details. A nood will last for hours on a single coin cell battery, with no big noisy EL-wire inverter to manage. This video shows how to hook up one n00d.
