Apple Pippin (1996) video game console platform

Photos and more on our Tumblr, follow! https://adafruit.tumblr.com/ Apple Pippin (1996) video game console platform Wikipedia - The Apple Pippin was a multimedia technology platform, designed by Apple Computer, and marketed as PiPP!N. According to Apple, Pippin was directed at the home market as "an integral part of the consumer audiovisual, stereo, and television environment." Pippin is based on the Apple Macintosh platform, including the classic Mac OS architecture. Apple licensed the Pippin technology to third-party companies. Bandai Company Ltd. developed the ATMARK and @WORLD models, and focused them on the gaming and entertainment business in Japan, Canada and the United States. The Apple Pippin platform was named for the Newtown Pippin, an apple cultivar, a smaller and more tart relative of the McIntosh apple (which is the namesake of the Macintosh). According to Apple, it intended for Pippin to be more than just a platform for game consoles. "Apple believes that over time Pippin will take many forms, including home telecommunication devices and much more. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin AND a promo video from Apple and amazing commercial from Japan, check out our previous post with photos, details and more - all part of our MARCHintosh postin' ! #MARCHinstosh #apple #gaming

Apple Interactive Television Box (1994)

Apple Interactive Television Box (1994) Before Apple TV, there was "The Apple Interactive Television Box", or ITV, also internally identified as STB (set-top box). Learn more about it, and check the photos and vid of ours (we have one!) ... Wikipedia - The Apple Interactive Television Box (AITB) is a television set-top box developed by Apple Computer in partnership with a number of global telecommunications firms, including British Telecom and Belgacom. Prototypes of the unit were deployed at large test markets in parts of the United States and Europe in 1994 and 1995, but the product was canceled shortly thereafter, and was never mass-produced or marketed. The Apple Interactive Television Box is based upon the Macintosh Quadra 605 or LC 475. Because the box was never marketed, not all specifications have been stated by Apple. It supports MPEG-2 Transport containing ISO11172 (MPEG-1) bit streams, Apple Desktop Bus, RF in and out, S-Video out, RCA audiovideo out, RJ-45 connector for either E1 data stream on PAL devices or T1 data stream on NTSC devices, serial port, and HDI-30 SCSI.[2] Apple intended to offer the AITB with a matching black ADB mouse, keyboard, Apple 300e CD-ROM drive, StyleWriter printer, and one of several styles of remote controls. The hard drive contains parts of a regular North American Mac OS 7.1.1 with Finder, several sockets for network connection protocols, and customized MPEG1 decoding components for the QuickTime Player software. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Interactive_Television_Box https://wiki.preterhuman.net/Apple_Interactive_Television_Box https://pippin.fandom.com/wiki/Apple_Interactive_Television_Box #MARCHintosh Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #apple

The Great Search: 5" 800x480 40 Pin TTL Display

This week, we're looking to upgrade our PyPortal design by replacing the M4 SAMD51 https://www.digikey.com/short/r34w4h33 + ESP32 https://www.digikey.com/short/hrqh8zh8 with an ESP32-S3 https://www.digikey.com/short/88rt8mvn which has RGB TTL display support. This means we can initialize larger displays than 320x240 - up to 800x480! We'll need to use just about all the GPIO but it's worth it for a gorgeous big display. These displays use a standard 40-pin interface. Let's see what Digi-Key has in stock for us to check out and we'll chat about different options available in these display types. EYE on NPI: i.MX RT1040 Crossover MCUs

This week's EYE ON NPI is a 1040 that is easier than filing out a 1040-EZ (https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-fillable-forms/free-file-fillable-forms-choose-the-right-1040-form), but will still get you a great return on your time investment: it's the NXP i.MX RT1040 Crossover MCU series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nxp-semi/i-mx-rt1040-crossover-mcu) an ultra powerful microcontroller that is designed to make it easy to add high speed processing without a lot of work or excessive BOM costs. The RT1040's ease of usability and implementation stands out when we look at the details, allowing you - yes you! - to have 500 MHz+ Cortex M7 processing on a low cost two layer board, and without a separate PMIC. We're featuring this chip as the big sister to the Metro M7 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4950) that we're also releasing this week, so it's definitely an iMX party here at the 'fruit. The suggested way to program the iMX NXP series is to use NXP's IDE MCUxpresso (https://www.nxp.com/design/software/development-software/mcuxpresso-software-and-tools-:MCUXPRESSO) but you can also just use the NXP SDK with the arm-gcc toolchain in a command line or other IDE (https://developer.arm.com/Tools%20and%20Software/GNU%20Toolchain) If your application plans to use USB, we recommend checking out our TinyUSB implementation which has iMX RT10xx support (https://github.com/hathach/tinyusb) which compiles under arm-gcc as well, and includes many examples that you can build off of. We've also ported our TinyUF2 second-stage USB bootloader that has mass-storage for read-write of the flash memory (https://github.com/adafruit/tinyuf2). These chips are powerful and very integrated, so you don't need separate power management chips - also known as PMIC's - or SRAM but there are some tips and tricks to watch for about pin usage, the built in bootloader, and configuring the DC/DC converter. This handy video from NXP has some good quickstart tips (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpb_mZknqrk) and each chip also has a suite of app notes for hardware implementation (https://www.nxp.com/products/processors-and-microcontrollers/arm-microcontrollers/i-mx-rt-crossover-mcus/i-mx-rt1040-crossover-mcu-with-arm-cortex-m7-core:i.MX-RT1040). There's many chips in the iMX RT family, as you move up and down you'll be trading package size, SRAM, and peripherals, for complexity and price. (https://www.nxp.com/products/processors-and-microcontrollers/arm-microcontrollers/i-mx-rt-crossover-mcus:IMX-RT-SERIES) The RT1040 sits nicely in the middle with 512KB of SRAM (the bigger chips are up to 1 or 2 MB), parallel TFT support, CAN bus, Ethernet, and two flexIO peripherals that can mimic various interfaces. But it doesn't have MIPI support, or a built-in camera interface, or a second USB port. Digi-Key does stock all of the rest if you so wish! (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANogBMADAJxMDsIAuoQA4AuUECAC%2BYoA) The NXP evaluation boards are fully featured and are recommended by NXP to get started (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc/MIMXRT1040-EVK/17141404) We tend to develop off the eval boards first, then using the schematics as a guideline for our own designs. While the BGA packaging is intimidating, it's available in two sizes: 9x9 and 11x11 with the same pinout - the smaller one has 0.65mm ball pitch, and the larger one has 0.8mm pitch, which means you can fan-out on a 2-layer PCB (https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/application-note/AN10778.pdf) or get roomy with a 4-layer. Other than a 3.3V power supply, a crystal and some passives, you only need a QSPI flash memory chip - we use the W25Q64 (https://www.digikey.com/short/0jpf8wmf) on our Metro M7 with great success. Best of all, both versions of the NXP iMX RT1040 chips are in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key! We suggest starting with the larger MIMXRT1042XJM5B (https://www.digikey.com/short/jv9qjdtv) and the RT1040 EVK (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc/MIMXRT1040-EVK/17141404) Huzzah, the chip shortage is over - so order today and you'll be blazing along with a Cortex M7 at 500 or 600 MHz by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: HDMI Connector for DVI Compatible Displays

One of our new Feather designs will sport a full-size HDMI connector that can be used to connect to DVI displays. While the RP2040 itself does not have a native DVI driver, you can sorta-bitbang your way to success using the PicoDVI library (https://github.com/adafruit/PicoDVI). Like USB, there are standardized connectors, so it's easy to find a good range of suppliers that will give us full-sized HDMI connectors. Like USB Type C, you can also use the connector in a pick and place line and with some good paste deposition, skip the wave or selective solder step for the through-hole mounting tabs. EYE on NPI: XENSIV™ BGT60LTR11AIP and Radar Shield2Go

This week's EYE ON NPI is sixty-giga-cool with 60 giga-Hertz of Doppler radar sensing. It's the Infineon XENSIV™ BGT60LTR11AIP Radar and Shield2Go Dev board (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/infineon/xensiv-bgt60ltr11aip-radar-shield2go), featuring Infineon's super-low-power 60 GHz Doppler radar sensor with antenna-in-package (AIP). This device is an ultra-tiny 60 GHz radar-on-a-chip sensor that even includes the normally-large antenna's seen in most Doppler radars baked right into the top! RADAR is literally "Radio Detecting And Ranging" - a way of bouncing 'high frequency' electromagnetic waves off of objects to detect the reflection. We're familiar with radar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar) in a few contexts: originally developed for military use, it worked great for detecting metal things in the sky (airplanes) as they would approach a city to possibly bomb it. We still use it a lot in military contexts: detecting planes, bombs, boats and submarines. It's also super handy in domestic contexts like air traffic control, if you can detect planes you can verify their positions and make sure each one comes in or out of the airport without collision. Radar is also useful for weather pattern detection (although this sensor isn't good for that purpose, just a fun fact for you to know). Another common purpose for radar you're probably familiar with is the dreaded speeding radar gun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_speed_gun) a small-enough-to-be-handheld radar device that can be pointed at a car to determine its speed without requiring a difficult-to-calculate "time between two points" measurement. These reliable devices are apparently now are replaced with LIDAR based ones! Most folks who have used IR sensors, Time of Flight, or sonar sensors can understand how to detect an object by counting the delay between sending a signal vs when it's received and dividing by the wavelength. How can you determine velocity - normally you'd need to detect location twice, then determine the time between the two locations whereas radar can do it one measurement. This is thanks to the 'Doppler Effect' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect) the same scientific principle that causes ambulance sirens to be higher pitch as they approach and lower pitch as they drive away from you due to the 'bunching up' of the waves as the wave source moves. Likewise with Radar, the frequency will shift slightly depending on the speed of the object, which can be detected by calculating the minute variation in frequency. What's particularly neat about this sensor is that, compared to other radar modules that have a trace PCB antenna, the antenna is embedded right into the chip itself. Compare that with the BGT24 modules that come on a PCB with an 'Arduino shield size' antenna (https://www.digikey.com/short/dn48cfhr) The BGT60LTR11AIP comes as a BGA component, with a lot of pins! Thankfully, Ultra Librarian has a package footprint for this part that Digi-Key helpfully provides, so you can import and get started with integration quickly (https://app.ultralibrarian.com/details/2071C153-54B1-11EC-9033-0A34D6323D74/Infineon/BGT60LTR11AIPE6327XUMA2?ref=digikey) There's also a few different development boards available, including a tiny module 'shield' SHIELDBGT60LTR11AIPTOBO1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/infineon-technologies/SHIELDBGT60LTR11AIPTOBO1/16343839) that requires only 4 pins: power, ground, output direction and output motion detect (https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/product/evaluation-boards/demo-bgt60ltr11aip/) There's also a fancy "SHIELD2GO" board (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/infineon/xensiv-bgt60ltr11aip-radar-shield2go) that has all of the user-useful GPIO and SPI interface accessible, and a full demo dev kit that also includes the mini shield. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/infineon-technologies/DEMOBGT60LTR11AIPTOBO1/13563722) There are two ways to integrate the sensor: via simple two-GPIO connection where one pin is motion detect and the other is direction, or via a more complex SPI protocol. The SPI interface is documented in the User's Guide (https://www.infineon.com/dgdl/Infineon-AN625_userguide_BGT60LTR11AIP-ApplicationNotes-v01_05-EN.pdf) and the Infineon bgt60 github repo (https://github.com/Infineon/sensor-xensiv-bgt60trxx) has some portable C code that just needs a hardware abstraction layer implemented in order to be used with your favorite platform. For an ultra-tiny Radar module-on-a-chip that has low-power, low-cost and ease-of-integration, you can pick up the Infineon XENSIV™ BGT60LTR11AIP (https://www.digikey.com/short/jv0b0n0z) at Digi-Key. It's in stock right now for immediate shipment, and available in any quantity on cut-tape or reel: order today and you can be Dopplering by tomorrow afternoon.

Desk of Ladyada - overtime edition! RP2040 DVI Feather from Bones

we finished some other stuff we'd been working on so we are able to spend some time on these RP2040 "Bones" we designed last month - we can swap different components on the right to mimic what we did with our Feather M0 series (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=feather+m0&sort=BestMatch) we're starting off with adding a DVI output - this would be a great match for our fork of the PicoDVI library (https://github.com/adafruit/PicoDVI) that is now Arduino librarified. personally, i just want a DVI output device i can use for testing HDMI-input displays! Once this feather is known good and working we'll do all the other Feathers we are planning. The Great Search: Alternative to NRND Part PAM8301

This week's Great Search is for a replacement for our Venerable PAM8301 class D amplifier (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/PAM8301AAF/4033366), a part we've used in a ton of boards to act as a mini amplifier for SMT magnetic buzzers (https://www.digikey.com/short/1w0t87ww) for making beeps and simple sound effects. It's low cost enough, it is only a little more expensive than a Class AB, but without needing large blocking caps. Sadly, it's now NRND, so let's find another similar chip that we can use to keep our designs alive and kicking! The Great Search: Molex Picoblade

What is this, a sword for ants?!?! No! It's the Molex Picoblade, a common 1.25mm pitch connector used in electronics. We're choosing it on our I2S BFF board because we want a low-profile connector that's easy to plug and un-plug. If you'd like to use the same connector, you're in luck, because Digi-Key stocks the whole family. https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/molex-connector/picoblade-connector-system Let’s check them out! John Park's CircuitPython Parsec: Noise

#circuitpythonparsec Use the Noise library's noise function to smoothly flow through values. This simplex noise (based on Ken Perlin's 2D noise function) is great for creating undulating LED values and more. Implemented by Tod @todbot Kurt, noise is available in the CircuitPython Community Bundle, and can be installed with 'circup install noise' https://github.com/todbot/CircuitPython_Noise demo code here: https://gist.github.com/todbot/58bcf7ea3a85aede3f951f8176e3aad5 To learn about CircuitPython: https://circuitpython.org Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
