The Computer Perfection 🚀🕹️🎮👾
Released by Lakeside in 1979, was a ground-breaking electronic game of its time that was touted as "the ultimate playmate". The game, housed in a transparent blue dome, was activated by lifting the dome, revealing four games and three skill levels to choose from. The four games offered unique challenges to players: 1️⃣ Countdown: This one-player scenario tasked players with lighting all 10 lights in the correct order in the fewest number of moves. 2️⃣ Black Hole: Another one-player game, Black Hole had the same objective as Countdown but with an added twist—if you pressed an already lit button, the game would turn off all the lights ahead of it and the light itself. 3️⃣ Brain Battle: A two-player game, one player had to turn off all the lights starting with number one, while the other player had to turn all the lights on, starting with number six. 4️⃣ Light Race: This two-player game was a race to turn on more than five lights. Computer Perfection was not just a game; it was a sign of the times. In the late 1970s, a number of toy companies began producing electronic games for a public fascinated with computers. These toys, Computer Perfection included, helped usher in a new era of more sophisticated electronic gameplay. Computer Perfection, gained considerable media attention for its cameo in the second season of "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (1979-1981). In the episode "Mark of the Saurian," viewers can notice Computer Perfection's distinct blue dome beside Buck's (Gil Gerard) bed in the Searcher sick bay. 🎮📺🚀🛏️💙 #ComputerPerfection #RetroGaming #Lakeside Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Testing our new adorable QT gamepad at the Adafruit factory 🎮🚀🛠️😍⏱️💪
We've often made little robots or games and we need a quick and small gamepad-like interface to control motors or robots or whatever. this gamepad will do nicely: it has an analog thumb-stick, and six buttons: A B X Y and select start. the two analog readings and six digital readings are managed by an onboard seesaw peripheral https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_seesawPeripheral attiny816 - so once the PCBs are assembled we gotta program that chip. we made a programming shield with a metro m0 https://www.adafruit.com/product/3505 and OLED screen. we use an M0 because we need a fair amount of memory to store the firmware of the target board in flash, plus solid hardware serial support to perform the UPDI program. the screen lets you know when its time to test the buttons by pressing them, in a few seconds we're done! #Gamepad #Robots #Adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: Color Sensor to Replace TCS34725
The chip shortage may be winding down, but there are still a few parts that didn't make it to the other side. To wit: the TCS34725 color sensor, a mainstay in so many Adafruit projects (https://learn.adafruit.com/products/1334/guides) has been discontinued (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ams-osram-usa-inc/TCS34725FN/3737685). We loved this sensor as it had a few nice things going for it: Red/Green/Blue and Clear diode sensors, IR blocking/cut filter, INTerrupt output, I2C communication, and a low cost of under $2 in quantity. We may not be able to get the exact same sensor, but let's try to find something with as much overlap as possible. rotarotarotarotary (that's four times a rotary encoder) 🔄🔢🕹️🔵🔴⚪🟣🌈💡🛠️🎛️🔌🔋🎚️💻💾🧩💡🚀
count em: one, two, three...four rotary encoders encrust this new Stemma QT board! with a lil attiny817 running the adafruit seesaw code, we can now read 4 encoders and 4 switches plus control 4 matching neopixels all over I2C. great for when you do not want to spend all your microcontroller cycles counting out all your interrupted pins plus also clocking out neopixels. we don't have a ton of room on this 'standard sized' 4 inch by 1 inch PCB, so we stuck the pixels underneath. now on low cost encoders you can't really see the lighting, but on fancy 'clear body' encoders you can get a cool glowing effect! there's even clear or translucent knobs one can get that will diffuse the color nicely. Pew pew! Our seesaw PC joystick board works peachy-keen
We picked up a Gravis Advanced (https://www.mocagh.org/loadpage.php?getgame=gravis-front) PC analog joystick to verify our design for an adapter board is all peachy-keen. after some confusion about the way buttons work - turns out you DON'T want the knobs on the side centered because that disconnects the switches from the DE-15 - we have some success! since the X and Y positions are changed by the joystick moving the wiper on two pots (https://allpinouts.org/pinouts/connectors/input_device/joystick-pc-gameport/) and not by a voltage divider, we have to do a tiny bit of math to figure out the actual resistance. so far this board works very nicely and will let some of those old joysticks live again in modern projects. here we have a QT Py reading the values, and it would be trivial to convert this to a USB HID keyboard, mouse or joystick interface. Plug and play ANO encoder to seven segment
We'll be stocking this ANO rotary encoder breakout in the shop soon, it lets one quickly connect and read the buttons and encoder on an 'ipod classic' over I2C. we like to make a good visible demo that is shown on a product page that really gives folks a good idea of how the product works, so here we've got it hooked up to an I2C 7-segment backpack (https://www.adafruit.com/product/878) with a touch of Arduino code to display the counter ticks from the encoder moving back and forth, and some text for when each of the 5 buttons is pressed. The Gravis advanced classic PC joystick
we never had a PC when we were younger so we sorta missed out on having a PC joystick - but this Gravis Advanced (https://www.mocagh.org/loadpage.php?getgame=gravis-front) design was rugged enough to survive 30 years - there's a datecode of 1991 on the PCB. PC joysticks are fairly simple: there's three mechanical buttons but actually you can only map them to 2 possible pins - the mapping is done with these rotary switches which confused us at first but turns out they have contacts that switch around which pads go from the onboard PCB to the DE15. the X and Y positions are changed by the joystick moving the wiper on two pots (https://allpinouts.org/pinouts/connectors/input_device/joystick-pc-gameport/). note they aren't connected up as a resistor divider - that's because there were no ADC's on PCs at the time - instead the resistance was fed into an oscillator like the 555 and then the pulse width measured! Prop-Maker Feather CircuitPython demo sketch
The prop-maker feather has so much hardware built-in, its going to be great for making props and toys that have audio, motion and LEDs. we whipped up a quick demo that shows off LED animations (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_LED_Animation) on neopixels, motion sensing with the LIS3DH (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2809), servo output control to a micro servo (https://www.adafruit.com/product/169), and audio playback via a 3W I2S amplifier (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3006). CircuitPython has great I2S audio playback support and even supports digital mixing so there's volume control with an external potentiometer. All of this is running concurrently with excellent resposiveness, so we're going to order the PCBs shortly. EYE SPI with my little eyes, a new accessory for our QT Py
We have done 300 revisions (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/04/27/300/), including just-about-all of our OLED, E-Ink and TFT displays to add EYE SPI connectors (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=eye+spi) to make it very fast and easy to wire up displays, touchscreens and microSD cards without a ton of breadboarding. yay! but now we have to make the controller side easy as well. First up, this EYE SPI accessory for the QT Py uses a slim FPC connector (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/04/04/the-great-search-narrow-body-fpc-connector-with-18-pins-and-0-5mm-pitch-thegreatsearch-digikey-digikey-adafruit/) and makes plug-n-play connectivity to our 2.8" capacitive touch screen child's-play (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2090). works a treat - we'll be getting this into the adafruit shop faster than you can blink. I2S amplifier output BFF for QT Py and Xiao boards
bee bap boo bap bap, we're testing out our I2S BFF that we designed a few months ago (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/01/28/a-new-bff-with-i2s-audio-amplifier/) - makes adding high quality audio really easy for many microcontroller boards like the RP2040 or ESP32 QT Py's. Here I'm running an MP3 streaming demo (https://github.com/schreibfaul1/ESP32-audioI2S) on an ESP32 QT Py and it's working great to play Frequency by BartleBeats direct from Bandcamp (https://bartlebeats.bandcamp.com/album/frequency)! Of course it also works great with playing from onboard flash or micro SD cards, particularly in CircuitPython where we have concurrent I2S audio playback baked in. EYE on NPI: Texas Instruments DRV8411 Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver
This week's EYE ON NPI will drive it's way into your heart and into your motorized design BOMs: it's the Texas Instruments DRV8411 Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/drv8411-dual-h-bridge-motor-driver), a nifty multi-purpose dual H-bridge driver for use with either two brushless DC motors or bi-polar stepper motor. This driver features a wide operating voltage, from 11V down to 1.65V, and up to 4A current output so it can be used in just about any motor control design. It's intended as an upgrade replacement to the popular DRV8833 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/DRV8833PW/4251165), with pin-compatible options or with reduced BOM options if you're good with a little redesigning. Now you might be thinking: Hey, that DRV8833 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/DRV8833PW/4251165) part number sounds so familiar - where have a I seen that before? Well, if you were thinking that you saw our Chip Shortage video clip from about 1 year ago (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/05/26/chip-shortage-ti-drv8833-motor-driver-chipshortage-adafruit-adafruit-digikey-txinstruments/) we were desperately begging for some DRV8833's in PWP package so that we could get Crickit boards back in stock (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3093). We did get some eventually so that we have both our Crickit and DRV8833 breakout boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/3297/6419360) back in stock but now we're looking at maybe updating the design with this fancy upgrade. The original DRV8833 is a great chip, and can drive two DC motors or one stepper at 2.7-10.8V and peak current of 2A. To compare, the DRV8411 has a wider range of 1.65-11V which means its better at low voltage motors, say ones running off of 2 alkaline batteries. It's also available in 4A peak output transistor as the DRV8411A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/DRV8411ARTER/18111300) - double the current! Note that if you are pushing that much current, at long intervals, through your driver you will have to think about heat-sinking (https://www.digikey.com/en/videos/c/cui/how-to-select-a-heat-sink). There's a section in the datasheet about how to use copper fill as a heat sink: 2 oz copper will do better than 1 oz and you'll want a large square area. Otherwise, you may have to look at adding an external heatsinking or forced cooling with a fan. Or, you may want to avoid getting into such a hot state by adding current limiting. These drivers can use a resistor that is in series with the motor power to limit how much current will sink: once the voltage across the resistor hits 200mV, the feedback system will reduce current draw. Our original breakout used these power/current-sense resistors to limit current to 1.2A by default. One nifty feature we saw in the DRV8411A version (https://www.digikey.com/short/5d917nh7) of this family is they've gotten rid of the 'in path' current sense resistors. While they worked great they needed to be high wattage in order to handle the full current from the motor path. The A changes this to a current mirror (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_mirror) so that low wattage resistors, say 0402 or 0603 size, can be used instead saving a ton of space. You can also connect the monitor pads to your favorite microcontroller ADC to monitor current draw. And, oh yes, the DRV8411 (https://www.digikey.com/short/f8z23pm7) and DRV8411A (https://www.digikey.com/short/5d917nh7) are both in stock right now for instant shipping from Digi-Key! When you order from Digi-Key they will pack and ship your order from Thief River Falls within the day and you will get it as quickly as tomorrow morning so you can get your motors twisting and turning with this fabulous NPI.

The Great Search: Analog Switch Chips and Multiplexers
A super fun chip to have in your toolkit is an analog switch or multiplexer (mux) - which can act like an SPST but doesn't require a mechanical switch. There's a few things to watch out for, but these are very handy when you want to move analog signals around. The Bus Pyrate design we were working on uses a 4066 in TSSOP - let's find a chip that we can use in this design but also poke around at some other analog switches and muxes that are available on Digi-Key! EYE on NPI: Cree XP-G3 Photophyll™ Select LEDs
This week's EYE ON NPI is like a beam of sunlight shining into your life - it's the Cree XP-G3 Photophyll™ Select LEDs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cree/xp-g3-photophyll-select-leds)! These are high-power illumination LEDs that are designed specifically for horticulture lighting. Before we begin - we do want to clarify that you don't have to worry about these LEDs being from the Kree-with-a-K (https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Kree) - the powerful blue-skinned and technically advanced humanoid race that antagonize the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No, these are from the technically advanced and very peaceful Cree corporation, who do not have blue skin but do make powerful blue LEDs (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/creeled-inc/XPGDRY-L1-0000-00501/7134715). Cree-with-a-C is famous for their wide range of powerful LEDs that are available with precision binned frequencies (https://forum.digikey.com/t/cree-led-binning/761) To create an LED, we first need to create a diode (that's the D in LED) - with P-doped and N-doped silicon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-emitting_diode_physics) the two doping materials are specifically picked so that when current is passed through, photons are emitted that match a desired frequency (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-emitting_diode_physics#Materials). Originally we only had Gallium-Arsenide which could make red light, then with tweaking we could move the frequency around to get yellow or light green. Then new materials were discovered to give green, blue light or even UV. You'll note on that Wikipedia article that the frequencies have a range - and depending on the doping techniques the frequency can shift around. Low cost LEDs just come in "Dim Red" or "Bright Green" and are not guaranteed to all match color and brightness - although they tend to be close. If you need perfect color and brightness matching you need to get binned LEDs: When manufactured, the LEDs are quickly tested in each batch to determine the exact frequency and then placed into a 'bin' labelled with that value. Whenever you buy that LED you're guaranteed to get ones that emit the same frequency - within some established error margin. You pay more but have fewer surprises - that's Cree's expertise (https://forum.digikey.com/t/cree-led-binning/761). For growing plants, of course it's easiest to just stick them under the sun which does a great job of providing the sunlight photons required to kick off photosynthesis. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosynthesis) But perhaps there's not enough light where you're at, or you need to have the plants indoors to protect them from weather, or they're seedlings and it isn't spring. That's where grow lights come in! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grow_light) There's a ton of research into the science of what kind of lights work best for different plants (https://journals.ashs.org/hortsci/view/journals/hortsci/50/9/hortsci.50.issue-9.xml) - historically folks used fluorescent or halide lamps, but LEDs have the benefit of not dimming or burning out over time as long as they are heat-sinked - and even better you may not even need active cooling. Make sure to follow the Cree documentation on packaging and heat-sinking, and use aluminum-backed PCBs to help diffuse heat. (https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/led-heat-dissipation-and-lowering-thermal-resistance-of-led-lighting-substrates) If this spring has inspired you to dabble in a green thumb, or maybe you have a horticultural-science product you're developing, the Cree XP-G3 Photophyll Select LEDs (https://www.digikey.com/short/t07dnf4t) will be super efficient for any cyber-plant grow lighting system. And best of all, they're in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment, in a variety of binned ratios. Order today and you'll be glowing and growing by tomorrow afternoon.

RP2040 LoRa Feather Tester Brains Upgrade
Most of our testers use pretty simple gpio toggling to verify everything's connected - but for our Radio Feathers https://lnkd.in/gsrgRF9C we want to also verify that the radio signal is connected through properly. so we use a separate radio to ping pong a message and check the RSSI. traditionally we did this with separate radio feathers but that got a little annoying to manage since they'd get lost or the battery would be dead just as we were about to get on with some testing. since our new fancy Tester Brains https://lnkd.in/eGCQmvnt got an upgrade from teensy to pico, we also revised to add an EYE-SPI connector which brings plenty of GPIO and SPI over. now we have the second RFM module connected to the tester itself so it's all-in-one. a lot easier to manage! Seesaw-based NeoDriver does I2C to NeoPixel conversion
NeoPixel LEDs (a.k.a WS2812 / SK6812 family) are a super-easy way to add addressable RGB lighting with only one GPIO. they're ubiquitous on microcontrollers, but some chips or SBC's dont have neopixel support due to the precision timing required to send data. we often get folks asking how to get NeoPixels working on some OrangeBananaOnionRockchipAllWinner Pi type board, given we have our Blinka library that provides support for CircuitPython libraries. but if theres no neopixel_write implementation written for that platform, it just wont work. a quick solution is this seesaw-based NeoDriver board: send it the NeoPixel data you want to write over I2C and it will blit out the perfect pixel timing on the other side. we're using an attiny1616 so we have enough RAM to buffer a 512-pixel long strand. now, to be fair - its not super fast because we have to write each pixel over I2C https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-seesaw-atsamd09-breakout/neopixel, but with 1MHz clock and as long as you're not writing the whole strip at once, its not so bad! we add a 5V charge-pump so even on 3V boards, you'll get a clean 5V signal. pre-soldered terminal blocks and Stemma QT plugs make this a no-solder solution for adding NeoPixels easily to any device with I2C. NeoKey CHOC Breakout
Kailh CHOC switches are low profile and are available in linear or clicky style https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=choc and they are very cool looking - but one thing they aren't is MX compatible! they have a totally different pinout so we need new breakout boards if we want to use them in a project. This is a simple 'port' of our NeoKey https://www.adafruit.com/product/4978 that has a CHOC socket https://www.adafruit.com/product/5118 and we're testing it here on a breadboard to make sure the button and NeoPixel works well before ordering final PCBs.
