EYE on NPI: ScioSense ENS160 Air Quality Sensor

This week's EYE ON NPI is just in time for Earth Day - it's a new environmental sensor: the ScioSense ENS160 Air Quality Sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/sciosense/ens160-air-quality-sensor) - a digital multi-gas sensor that offers optimum detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxidizing gases. This is a 4-in-one sensor that improves on common MOX gas sensors that have become popular on the market, but is still super easy to use. This sensor is the successor to the popular CCS811 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sciosense/CCS811B-JOPD500/6569311), which we used for many years and was one of the first embedded MOX sensors on the market. It was quite popular but only had one MOX plate, and has been improved with the introduction of the ENS160. Gas sensors are all essentially resistive sensors, where the exposed silicon has a metal oxide layer (MOX) that is susceptible to ambient gasses. There's a heater element that you need to turn on, then wait until the silicon chunk can react with the air. The resistance changes with the amount of organic compounds in the air and you can measure the resistive differences. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemical_gas_sensor) Traditional gas sensors came with 4 pins: two for the heater, and two for the resistor. You have to power the heater, then use a resistor divider or op-amp to read the resistance and back calculate. (https://learn.adafruit.com/gas-sensor-comparison/connect-the-sensor-boards) There's no built-in calibration available, you'll have to figure out what each resistance 'means' in human-friendly terms like AQI or ppm/ppb concentrations. This made a lot of gas sensors difficult to use, and also unreliable without constant upkeep. (https://www.google.com/search?q=alcohol+sensor+calibration) The new generation of MOX gas sensors follow in the footsteps of humidity sensors that were originally just capacitive sensors, but now are fully integrated with instant usable data. The CCS811 was one of the first to do this, a real pioneer. For these types of sensors, the MOX element is hidden inside, and the heater is automatically or digitally controlled. Baseline readings are used to provide home or office-grade calibration where we may care more about changes in readings rather than absolute readings. For example, an office's eCO2 reading has increased over the day from "good" to "poor" - that would indicate a need to turn on an HVAC fan or alert someone to open a window. The ENS160 has 4 different sensor elements, each one will have slightly different MOX doping, which means it will react to different classes of gasses. Which is something to remember: it's not like you can tell which TVOC you're sensing - the whole family of ethanol, methane, acetone, etc. are all going to activate the sensing bodies. Likewise - if you need precision CO2 measurements, nothing beats an NDIR sensor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondispersive_infrared_sensor). But those sensors are also pretty expensive - and don't do TVOC sensing. For basic usage, eCO2 will work just as well and at significant power and cost savings. Likewise, if you need specific TVOC sensing, those will cost a lot more but they are tuned. What we like about the sensor is that it's fully integrated: no firmware blobs or NDAs required which means we were able to get it ported to Python without difficulty.(https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_ENS160/blob/main/examples/ens160_advancedtest.py) There's also an Arduino library published by ScioSense for integration in any C/C++ build. The library supports temperature and humidity compensation as well. If you think the ScioSense ENS160 Air Quality Sensor (https://www.digikey.com/short/mcv97mq2) is a breath of fresh air, then you're in luck because they're in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment! You can also pick up some of the Adafruit-made breakouts for the ENS160 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/5606/16750376) to get you started fast - our breakout includes regulators and level shifting, so you can drive it from 3 or 5V power and logic. Order today and you'll have them in your hands by tomorrow afternoon.

CircuitPython support for DVI 'Bell works with Wifi on Pico W

our first version of the pico dvi bell didn't quite work, but the second version has the right pinouts and is ready for testing. here we're trying it with CircuitPython *and* WiFi support: so we're able to connect over the internet with SSL to a site, get data, and then display it on a monitor. since the Pico W requires a lot of memory for the wireless connectivity we're using monochrome DVI output which means we have about 50K remaining after the framebuffer is allocated for the DVI display. CircuitPython supports 1, 2 or 8 bit color which you can configure based on your memory availability! The Great Search: Illuminated Push-On Push-Off Panel Mount Switch

From our mailbag, a request from a viewer! "Hey, I recently had a terrible time on digikey finding a push-on push-off switch... I think because I was not understanding their "switch function" filter... Would love a video about it sometime!" A great question for a great search, let's take a look at a panel mount switch with Push-On Push-Off capability. There's a lot of tricky search elements to select, since Digi-Key stocks soooo many of these! See the chosen part at Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/pr9vr30f

turtle logo runs nicely on the Feather DVI with CircuitPython

we rummaged through CircuitPython project-lead tannewt's github branches to find this build of CircuitPython with DVI output support. now you can treat any HDMI monitor as a display for CircuitPython - for example here we are running "turtle" (https://docs.python.org/3/library/turtle.html) demos that show making cool graphical shapes, but to a display on our desk, via the Feather RP2040 with DVI (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5710). the REPL also appears on the screen - how fun is that!? The RP2040 Feather with USB Host lets us use Intellikeys with an iPad

the Intellikeys is a popular accessibility device with custom overlays, that is no longer supported. even though it has a USB plug it doesn't work like many USB devices: it doesn't enumerate as an HID keyboard, instead it downloads the firmware from the computer driver! that means it'll never work with many modern devices ike chromebooks or iPads...unless you've got a specialized device like the RP2040 Feather with two USB ports! we've loaded Thach's Intellikeys translator (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_IntelliKeys) arduino sketch and it even does overlay detection so that when we switch out the paper it will enumerate as a different HID device. the code and hardware is all open source, so it can be maintained and improved for a very long time. EInk Feather Tester tests Feather with EInk

our line of RP2040 Feather 'bones' continues a-pace. this week its an e-ink capable feather. the rp2040 chipset is a great e-paper driver because its got tons of SRAM for buffering the image bitmaps all at once. almost all paper displays use the same 24-pin connection so its easy to swap out different displays. during the test procedure of this feather, we load a test code that flashes TEST OK and some lines onto a sacrificial 2.13 inch display. if it got that far it means all is well, and we can put this board into the shop. EYE on NPI: BeagleBoard.org BeaglePlay® Single Board Computer Chips

This week's EYE ON NPI will stick by your side like a faithful hound- it's the BeagleBoard.org BeaglePlay® Single Board Computer (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/beagleboard/beagleplay). Single Board Computers (SBCs) are like tiny computers that are less powerful than desktops but much better at booting quickly and interfacing with hardware. They also tend to run Linux or BSD because it's easier to get those OS's ported to new chipsets than convincing Apple or Microsoft! This new generation of SBC from BeagleBoard builds on their prior success with the BeagleBoard (https://www.digikey.com/short/1cmb3dtf) and BeagleBone (https://www.digikey.com/short/c52dpz47) by adding a ton more interfaces and connectors so many projects can be built with no soldering. Here's a bullet list to get us started: AM6254 SoC processor 16 GB eMMC storage 2 GB DDR4 memory Supports expansion with OLDI, 4-lane CSI, and QWIIC connectors CSI for compatibility with the BeagleBone AI-654, Raspberry Pi Zero W, and compute modules Full-size HDMI connector Small size: 8 cm x 8 cm USB Type-C® with 5 V @ 3 A input connector mikroBUS connector RJ45 Ethernet connector for Gigabit Ethernet Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz capabilities BLE and SubG MicroSD slot USB Type-A connector at 480 Mbit Grove connector The main processor is the TI Sitara AM6254 (https://www.digikey.com/short/507rmwr2) with quad-core 64-bit A53 and a Cortex M4 coprocessor. This chip is paired with 2 GB of DDR4 RAM and 16 GB of eMMC storage for a powerful AI-ready chipset that has tons of onboard graphics support such as 1080P HDMI and 4 lanes of OLDI/LVDS. This chip has 9x UARTS, 5x SPIs, 6x I2C's, 3x PWM modules, 3x quad encoders, and 3x CAN-FD, and of course some GPIO. Note there's no ADC or DAC - you'd use SPI to connect those externally. Note this board doesn't have a 2x20 header like a Raspberry Pi, or even the dual header strips from the BeagleBone - but in exchange it stuffs a ton of hardware support directly onto the PCB. For example, if you'd like to add a camera, there's an onboard 22-pin 0.5mm pitch CSI FPC connector that is compatible with the Pi Zero camera cables (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5211) - use that adapter to interface with any low cost Pi Camera modules or compatibles. For video output, a vertical full-sized HDMI port will connect to any monitor or display. In fact we plugged in our desktop monitor and powered the Play with a USB wall adapter, and it immediately came up with an X desktop display. Mouse and keyboard can be added via the USB 2.0 socket, a mini hub will allow multiple devices since there's only one type A port. The BeaglePlay does a great job of including everything you may want to expand your Raspberry Pi with. For example, there's a BQ32002 Real Time Clock (https://www.digikey.com/short/p0h10jbq) with a CR1220 coin cell holder right on board - normally that would have to be included as a separate module. A microSD card slot can be used for storing large amounts of data: unlike most SBCs, there's onboard 16GB eMMC so you don't have to juggle SD cards to install the OS. There's also a ton of expansion ports! For I2C, the onboard QWICC (https://www.sparkfun.com/qwiic) JST SH connector lets you use the hundreds of SparkFun sensors as well as any Adafruit Stemma QT (https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-adafruit-stemma-qt/what-is-stemma) devices. For UART/PWM/ADC/I2C/GPIO you can use the onboard Grove connector. Finally, for networking either to the Internet or to a sensor network, there's Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 2.4G and 5G, BLE and Sub-G networking. Yeah that's a lot! It's almost all provided by the onboard TI SimpleLink CC1352P7 (https://www.ti.com/product/CC1352P7) which boasts support for 6LoWPAN, Amazon Sidewalk, Bluetooth 5.2 Low Energy, IEEE 802.15.4, MIOTY, Proprietary 2.4 GHz, Thread, Wi-SUN NWP, Wireless M-Bus (T, S, C, N mode), Zigbee. Note LoRa is not in there, so if you need LoRa that would be added with a separate module. There's also an RJ-11 with Single-Pair Ethernet (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/08/27/eye-on-npi-harting-single-pair-ethernet-eyeonnpi-digikey-ethernet-digikey-harting-adafruit/) which makes this a good fit to connect to industrial robotics or automation. All this hardware is available at a great price of under $100 at Digi-Key, we already picked one up and we're going to try and get Blinka working on it (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Blinka) so that all of our CircuitPython libraries will 'just run' in CPython. Especially given the ready-to-run Stemma QT / Qwiic port on the side, this is an excellent board for a powerful but solder-free configurable SBC. Digi-Key has tons of BeaglePlay's stock for immediate shipment, so order today (https://www.digikey.com/short/jpztmq3w) and you will be playing with your new BeaglePlay by tomorrow afternoon.

Desk of Ladyada - Sample Sunday

This weekend we took an itsy-bitsy-tiny-winy break from churning out new designs to try and dig our way out of the giant sample pile! we've got cool rotary encoders, some I2C LCDs, conductive fabrics, a miniature USB camera and more. Also, we'll snoop around tannewt's github repo to find a build of the DVI Feather for CircuitPython that now supports displayio to an HDMI monitor. The Great Search - Character LCD Display with I2C https://www.digikey.com/short/wd43mnwd This week in our sample pile we have an I2C/SPI character LCD module we're checking out. Although historically 16x2 character displays use a parallel method of addressing - with 4 or 8 bit data input and a write latch - most folks don't want to waste so many pins on such a slow display. So, instead, many now come with I2C interfaces. That makes wiring or routing a lot easier! Digi-Key stocks a huuuuge range of character displays, lets check out what's available and some things to watch for with voltages, backlights, and polarizer types. EYE on NPI: Skyworks Si3404 and Si3406x Power over Ethernet (PoE) Powered Device Chips

This week's EYE ON NPI is an EYE in the SKY, as we're featuring our first NPI from Skyworks: the Skyworks Si3404 and Si3406x Power over Ethernet [PoE] Powered Device Chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/silicon-laboratories/si3404-and-si3406x-power-over-ethernet-powered-device-chips). PoE is a standard, supported by many Ethernet hubs and switches (https://www.tp-link.com/us/solution/poe/) that allows a device connected to the hub to request +48V power over some of the Ethernet lines in Cat-5 cabling. Since many devices need Ethernet for speed and reliability - cameras, phone systems, printers, standalone monitors, and door entry systems, for example - you only need a single cable. These chips, originally from Silicon Labs and now made and sold by Skyworks, allow product designers to quickly add PoE support to their Ethernet products, saving space, complexity and wiring because a separate power supply is no longer needed.e First up, if you're wondering: "wow Skyworks, where have I seen that name before?" That's right! It was the California fabrication facility (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Such_Great_Heights#Music_video) where The Postal Service's Such Great Heights video was shot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wrsZog8qXg). The original video even featured the Skyworks logos on the chips - now it's blurred out. But that's a great excuse for us to mention that there's a Postal Service/Death Cab 20th Anniversary Tour this fall and we are definitely getting tickets (https://giveuptransatlanticismtour.com/). But back to PoE chips! We watched a discussion video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEhbVpYFvk0) about the history of this chip line, we were struck by the observation that the reason PoE is so popular for office buildings is that it's very disruptive and expensive to get electricians to run power outlets everywhere. But running Ethernet can be done by the IT department because the voltages are so low that no special licensing or permitting is needed. Ethernet can be run behind drywall, around door frames, or under drop floors without worrying about electrocution or fire hazards. And you don't have to worry about DC plug adapters or voltage mismatches. The Si3404 can provide up to 13W (https://www.digikey.com/short/49dqqh9m), the Si3406 can do 25W (https://www.digikey.com/short/35jn99tc) but are otherwise very similar. Other than a few passives and full-wave bridge rectifiers, you only need the flyback inductor-transformer (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/switching-converter-smps-transformers/168) - for isolated setups, it's a little more complicated. The Si3404 can also perform as a non-isolated buck converter for very small and low cost designs. The output voltage is set by a simple feedback resistor divider. Designs are compact, less than 1 square inch, for most use cases. Both the Skyworks Si3404 (https://www.digikey.com/short/49dqqh9m) and Si3406 (https://www.digikey.com/short/35jn99tc) are in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. There are also eval boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/silicon-laboratories/si3404-and-si3406x-power-over-ethernet-powered-device-chips) that come with buck/flyback/isolated setups so you can test them as replacements for your current power supply to make sure which schematic you'll follow. Order them today for immediate delivery - through the Postal Service or whatever your favorite carrier may be - and you'll be making your IoT designs easy-to-power by tomorrow afternoon!

The Great Search: 3.3V LDO with 20V+ Input Voltage

This weekend we whipped up a quick FUSB302 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/onsemi/FUSB302MPX/5844455) breakout that will allow USB Type C sink power negotiation. Basically, we can plug into a USB hub or wall wart that can provide up to 20V and request that much voltage. This could be really handy for audio or robotics projects that need 9V, 12V, 15V or 20V without the fuss of finding a matching DC adapter. Now that we've got the chip, the datasheet lets us know that we need a separate, external 3.3V-ish regulator to supply power to the chip. Let's go looking for an LDO that can handle 5V-20V in, and provide 3.3V and at least 100mA, along the way we'll also check that we have voltage-rated components and also chat about LDO versus buck converters for this use case. EYE on NPI: Tripp Lite Antimicrobial Surge Protectors for Home and Office @digikey @TrippLite

This week's EYE ON NPI will have you tripping all over yourself in a rush to place a Digi-Key order for the Tripp Lite Antimicrobial Surge Protectors (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/tripp-lite/antimicrobial-surge-protectors-for-home-and-office) a range of power extenders that have tons of ports for your home or office workstation. We're used to basic '6 outlet' power extenders, so when we peeped the many funky shapes, we picked up a few for the home office. Here's our favorites of the series: The TLP648UCBAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP648UCBAM/16161493) has a U-shaped body that is designed to clip onto a desk. Note it doesn't clamp down so you'll want to put it to the side where it can't get bumped, and a thick desk - like 1" or more - will probably work best. This one has 6 outlets, three on each side, two USB A 5V 2.4A and one USB C 5V 3.0A plug for portable devices. This is great for a work bench where you may have a few computers, scope, power plugs, and then also you want to charge your phone or power a single board linux computer or dev kit. The TLP68UBAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP68UBAM/16161654) is kinda like those yachts that have another, smaller, boat that can launch off of it (https://www.travelpulse.com/News/Entertainment/This-Yacht-Has-a-Garage-for-Your-Boat). There's the main power outlet plate with 6 outlets, then a detachable clamping USB power module that extends out and clamps onto a desk for plugging in up to 4 USB Type A. This one is nice if you're OK with having the power adapter on the floor or otherwise hidden behind your workspace There's also some super funky shapes, like the cubic TLP368CUBEUAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP368CUBEUAM/16161497) which is evocative of a Borg Spaceship (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Borg_cube) Or the spherical TLP38UAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP38UAM/16161623) with 3 outlets and 4 USB ports. While we didn't pick up a TLP410UCUFOAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP410UCUFOAM/16161616) we do note how useful it would be for a conference table so that folks don't end up crouching below the table then bonking their heads. But our number one fav, which we're going to use on the desk we broadcast EYE ON NPI from, is the TLP608DMUAM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/TLP608DMUAM/15298401) - a cute twist on the familiar 6-outlet favorite. First it is extra long so there's the 4 compact-outlets and then two chonky outlets for big power adapters. There's also two USB A ports with 5V 2.4A out max. Unlike the first adapter we showed off, this one has two thumbscrew clamps that can attach in any direction to any thickness desk. We're going to use this on our Ask-an-Engineer desk to power the lights, overhead cameras and demo boards that power over USB. A power outlet is kinda like a pair of shoes, belt or toothbrush: you want to get really good quality ones because you use them all day every day. The Tripp Lite series from Eaton (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/tripp-lite/antimicrobial-surge-protectors-for-home-and-office) are high quality, surge protected, and are a huge improvement from what you'd normally pick up for $20 from the hardware store. And Digi-Key has all of them in stock for immediate shipment! Order today and you can neaten up your desk wiring by tomorrow afternoon.

The Desk of Ladyada - Ring a Ding Ding it's time for a PiCowbell Duet

This week we've got two PiCowbells we're testing - one is our MCP2515 CAN Bus 'bell we designed a few weeks ago. It uses the SSOP version of this chip to stay nice and slim for the narrow Pico footprint. we tested this board successfully using our Feather M4 CAN as the 'other side' - speaking of, we've also been refactoring our CAN/MCP2515 arduino libraries (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_MCP2515) to be a little easier to use. the other bell is DVI output, using a mini HDMI connector. we designed this a few Desks ago, now it's time to try it out! we just had to make a new picoDVI pin definition and we have video out! we also got some UWB design prototypes ready for testing, these are kinda neat chips that are designed for indoor location/triangulation. finally we're working on a new design to allow QT Py (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=qt+py&sort=BestMatch) or Xiao boards to use our EYESPI cables for the small SPI displays in the shop (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=eyespi&sort=BestMatch) The Great Search - Narrow-body FPC connector with 18 pins and 0.5mm pitch https://www.digikey.com/short/fptn3hh3 We've searched for FPC cables connectors before on the Great Search (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/08/02/desk-of-ladyada-when-searching-for-fpc-connectors-its-good-to-be-flexible-adafruit-digikey-deskofladyada-thegreatsearch/) but this time we're going to try to find a specific size: we need a 18-pin 0.5mm pitch bottom-contact connector for use with our EYESPI cables and boards (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=eyespi&sort=BestMatch) but we don't want it to be too wide! Most are 13.4mm wide, which is 0.525" wide, and we want it to be no more than 0.5"! Lets look for a slimmer cable connector that will fit on the PCB at 0.45" or less - but still fit all our specifications. EYE on NPI: XMOS XU316 XCORE AI and XMOS XK-AUDIO-316-MC-AB Evaluation Board

In this week's EYE ON NPI, X marks the spot - the spot where you'll learn all about the XMOS XK-AUDIO-316-MC-AB Evaluation Board (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/x/xmos/xk-audio-316-mc-ab-evaluation-board) and the XMOS XU316 XCORE AI microcontroller that lies within! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/x/xmos/xu316-xcore-ai-microcontroller-ics) This is a super powerful microcontroller series - with an affordable price - that can act as a combination of DSP, microcontroller and graphics processor. We've seen a rise in the number of "cross-over" microcontrollers lately, as fab processes improve, and prices for computation drops, microcontrollers are starting to head towards single-board-linux-computer speeds. For example, check out our previous EYE ON NPI on the iMX series of chips (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/03/02/eye-on-npi-i-mx-rt1040-crossover-mcus-eyeonnpi-digikey-nxp-digikey-adafruit/) that come with 500+ MHz and many K of RAM. This week's NPI is from XMOS, (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/xmos) which has their own architecture - not based on ARM Cortex - with really beefy specs that make it excellent for audio and AI-computation. These chips have two interconnected banks of 8 cores with 512KB SRAM, MIPI, external memory support, high speed USB and of course all the peripherals you expect. With 2400 or 3200 MIPS of computation in this series, these are directly competing with the big players in the no-OS embedded-audio/video-goods market such as the STM32x7 Cortex M7 series of chips. And we, as the customer, benefit greatly from increased competition in that higher-power market! The XMOS series and their SDK looks like it's tuned specifically for voice recognition, which isn't surprising as our first recollection of XMOS chipset is their microphone array processor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/x/xmos/xcore-array-microphone-evaluation). You can still do microphone array work, but now process that audio on-chip as well. We also fancy the addition of a MIPI/CSI display or camera interface (https://www.digikey.com/short/5pjfjnq3) which will let you integrate modern displays (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/lcd-oled-graphic/107?s=N4IgTCBcDaILYEsAOCAEATBBnJAbAhgJ4gC6AvkA) at nearly any size - so it's also very good for GUI interfaces. Given these peripherals and capabilities, we think this chip would be popular as an on-screen display driver for machinery or autos where it can do non-Internet voice control in loud environments. It would also be good for smart speakers, or 'smart' anything where there's a lot of background noises (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G1VmDBGzKE) and you want to mix into or control an audio system. We notice that this chip is already being used in high end DACs for audiophiles (https://www.linsoul.com/products/smsl-sk-10-mkiii)! If this all sounds good to you, the entire line of XMOS chips is stocked at Digi-Key, including the XMOS XU316 XCORE AI line (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/x/xmos/xu316-xcore-ai-microcontroller-ics) and the featured XMOS XK Audio 316 evaluation board (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/x/xmos/xk-audio-316-mc-ab-evaluation-board) which comes with approximately 1-billion audio interface options. They'll ship immediately when you place your next order at Digi-Key, so book it today and you can start creating your next smart audio interface by tomorrow afternoon.
