EYE on NPI: TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter
This week's EYE ON NPI packs quite a punch, it's the powerful TI TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/tps61033-synchronous-boost-converter), a souped-up DC/DC regulator with a generous 5.5 A internal switch, in a tiny SOT package. This chip will chomp through your power generation needs, with a specialty at boosting Li Ion / LiPoly batteries to 5V at up to 2 A continuous current. The TI TPS series (https://www.digikey.com/short/m345b8wt) of boost converters is well-known here at Adafruit, they're the basis for our popular PowerBoost series of boards (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=powerboost) - all-in-one switching converters that will take a LiPoly battery in and give you 5V out for making charging phones or dev-boards easy. We've been using the TPS61090 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS61090RSAR/566911) on boards like the PowerBoost 500 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1903), that has an internal 2 Amp switch. For the PowerBoost 1000 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2030) we go with a TPS61030 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS61030RSAR/610198), with an internal 4A switch. Synchronous boosters with internal switches help engineering in three ways: disabling the chip fully disconnects the output and input without having to worry about the conducting body diode of a FET, it reduces BOM costs because there's two/three fewer components to worry about, and of course it makes layout easier and smaller. For a while, we've had folks ask for a PowerBoost 2000: a board that will take Lipo input and provide 2A output, which would let it easily power single-board computers like a Raspberry Pi 4. Finally there's a chip that will do the job! The TI TPS61033 (https://www.digikey.com/short/vt3wj7t7) really is a fully-integrated synchronous boost converter, only a few passive components are required: input and output bulk capacitors and, of course, an inductor. If you want to operate at 5V fixed output, you don't even need a feedback resistor divider! And, it's in a tiny package compared to the TPS610x0 chips, with thoughtful pin ordering so you can lay out the PCB on 2 layers with chunky fat copper pours to reduce inductance and act as a heat sink. The datasheet specifically steps through component selection for making a 5V 2A output from single cell battery using a 4x4mm 1uH inductor so we're pretty confident that this would make a great PB2K. If you have a rechargeable battery project that needs 5 V output and you want to go with a rock-solid booster that can provide 2 Amps of current, the TI TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter (https://www.digikey.com/short/vt3wj7t7) will make you jump for joy. Best of all, it's in stock! Thousands of them! All at DigiKey for immediate shipment. Order today and DigiKey will pack them up and send them off tonight so that you'll be boosting your batteries by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: 12V to 5V 2+ Amp buck converter
This week we're working on reviving our old floppy hacking projects by making a dev board that will let us connect to various old-school disk drives to either control or emulate them (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Floppy). These devices used lots of motors and solenoids to spin and eject the discs, so we will need to be able to provide them with a good amount of current. For 3 1/2" floppy drives, 5 Volts at 1 Amp or so is not unusual, and we expect larger disk drives may need even more power. For the other motors, we'll want to have a 12 V power supply input, so we need to convert 12V to 5V, and at these currents, an LDO like the 1117-series (https://www.digikey.com/short/z8vtf00m) will have to dissipate way more heat than we'd be able to get rid of - that's when a buck converter is a great alternative. Let's find a powerful and affordable converter that can provide 2A or more. The Great Search - SMT Screw Terminal Blocks
The Great Search - SMT Screw Terminal Blocks https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/te-connectivity-amp/board-mount-reflow-terminal-blocks This weeks' Great Search comes to us from social medial, where Jeremy S Cook asks: "Anyone know where I could find surface mount screw terminals?" (https://twitter.com/JeremySCook/status/1680208303870074880) We're glad you asked! This is something we've had to deal with, since we like to have solder-less designs but want to avoid using the selective solder machine or hand soldering for just 2 points. We've used Wago SMT terminal blocks on boards like the Bonsai Buckaroo (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4534) and STEMMA relay breakout (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4409) - the latter board we also wanted to avoid having contact terminals that were exposed in case folks were using mains power. However, these are push terminals, and they specifically want *screw-tightening* terminals. Does such a thing exist? Tune in to find out! https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/27/eye-on-npi-te-board-mount-reflow-terminal-blocks-eyeonnpi-digikey-teconnectivity/ Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #thegreatsearch #digikey

EYE ON NPI - Infineon XDPS2201XUMA1 and 170 W AC-DC Charger Design for E-bikes and Power Tools
This week on EYE ON NPI, we are keeping an eye on safety with Infineon's 170 W AC-DC Charger Design for E-bikes and Power Tools (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/infineon/170-w-ac-dc-charger-design-for-e-bikes-and-power-tools) featuring the Infineon XDPS2201XUMA1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/h3qfmvc0) digital flyback controller and Infineon IPA60R280P7SXKSA1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/cfvp4f82) 600 Volt, 12 Amp N-Channel power MOSFET. These two best buddies can join forces to help you quickly and safely charge big battery packs such as in e-Bikes and other micro-mobility devices (https://wagner.nyu.edu/rudincenter/areas-focus/micromobility). If you live near any density of folks, and in a place with well-paved roads, you've certainly noticed the increase in e-Bikes, e-Scooters, mono-wheels and other electric 'person-movers'. In NYC we've seen these go from banned to bountiful, as COVID restrictions made food and grocery delivery a bigger business than ever (https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/a-simple-solution-for-getting-cars-off-the-road-right-now.html). They're also popular in lots of countries where folks may not be able to afford cars, motorcycles or even mopeds: an entry-level E-Bike can go for $1000 to $3000 - which is a lot of money but much less expensive than a car. Plus you don't have to pay for gas or parking, you can lock it up outside or in your yard and charge it over a 120V power plug. But, about that charging setup ... these light vehicles (https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/applications/automotive/light-vehicles/) use very big batteries: a common 48V 250 Watt-hours is 26 18650 sized batteries connected in series - with extremely high discharge pulses necessary if you want to haul around a 75 lb bicycle plus a 200 lb cargo of human plus groceries. Also important is the ability to charge quickly. If you're using the e-Bike for a courier job, or you take it work, and you need to charge it in order to get back home, you don't want to wait around 16 hours. But that also means that bicycles are often charged unattended, and that could mean that a poor engineering job on the charging circuit can lead to tragedy (https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/07/e-bike-battery-lithium-ion-fire/674622/). So don't cheap out on your design, and don't try to invent high power electronics layouts and specifications when you can rely on experts who've already done the work and created a reference you can base your product on (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/infineon/170-w-ac-dc-charger-design-for-e-bikes-and-power-tools) https://www.digikey.com/short/h3qfmvc0 #adafruit #eyeonnpi #digikey

First you get the PCB panel, then you get the tester, then you get the Matrix 🔌🧠🔬
We are gettin' really really close to putting the new Matrix Portal S3 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5778 into the shop, here's a tester we use to burn in the self-test code. The RP2040 brains https://github.com/adafruit/RP2040-Based-Tester-Brains-PCB resets the S3 into the ROM bootloader, the sends over compressed binaries via USB. when the self-test starts up it notices that it's in the test jig and performs a self test of the GPIO and voltages. once done, it turns into a demo board that has a basic matrix display output for users to verify functionality. Matrix Portal S3 skips over the unobtainium SAMD51 🔌🔧💡
There's nothing like hefting a brand new panel of PCBs, ready to be snapped-apart and tested! this board is a refresh of our Matrix Portal M4 board - SAMD51's are unavailable for the near future so it's a great excuse to do a redesign...here we've got an 8MB Flash + 2MB PSRAM S3 with wifi, bluetooth, and a parallel-driving peripheral that does a great job driving RGB LED Matrices. we also fixed a common request by adding mounting holes and a 2x8 IDC connector up top so you can either plug directly into a panel or use a cable. #adafruit #electronics #Espressif Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- @EspressifSystems

The Great Search - Small 2, 3 and 4-Port USB Hub Chips
The Great Search - Small 2, 3 and 4-Port USB Hub Chips https://www.digikey.com/short/154zf0z3 We recently did a design for a simple 4-port USB hub - but we wanted to also show off some nicer hub chips available! Hub chips are available in 2, 3 and 4 port designs, and can be configured with LEDs, custom USB descriptors, and over-current detection. These could be useful when you have a product with more than one USB-interface chip (say one for native, one for debug USB) so that instead of two confusing USB ports you can have one interface with both devices exposed! Or, if you are designing a board with embedded linux, you can take advantage of the built in hub support to have multiple USB ports. There's also some interesting integrated hub chips like the LAN9513 https://www.digikey.com/short/jfmb83zv which has an Ethernet chip built in. RA8875 Breakout Board gets a revision plus SPI tri-state fix 🔧🔌🔄
The RA8875 is a nifty chip that can do SPI to 24-bit TTL display, up to 800x480! https://www.adafruit.com/product/1590 this breakout is an older design and with many parts no longer available, we had to do a respin to change the backlight driver from a FAN5333 to another high-output constant-current LED string driver https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/08/02/the-great-search-white-led-strand-backlight-constant-current-driver-fan5333-replacement-thegreatsearch-digikey-adafruit/ and while we were there we also updated the MISO pin to be tristate-d via a 74AHC1G125 so that you can share the SPI port with other chips - that was a request from over a decade ago that linged on my todo list. but it's done now :) #adafruit #electronics #RA887 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI: Silicon Labs MG24 Development Kit
This week's EYE ON NPI is going to Matter a lot to you if you're interested in integrating with the world of IoT devices and sensors that is converting on us, inside the home and out in the world...It's the Silicon Labs MG24 Series of development boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/silicon-laboratories/mg24-development-kit) - featuring the Silicon Labs EFR32MG24 series of chips (https://www.digikey.com/short/00892bvf), designed for use with Matter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter_(standard)) an open-source connectivity standard for smart home and Internet of Things devices from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (https://csa-iot.org/) formally the ZigBee Alliance. The EFR32MG24 chips (https://www.digikey.com/short/f8z8rbvn) are fully featured Cortex M33's with tons of peripherals, timers, and of course, a 2.4GHz radio that can be programmed to operate as a ZigBee device. That makes it perfect for use in designing low cost, low power, home automation devices that don't need the power and complexity of WiFi. These transports live on the lower 'levels' of the 7 Layer OSI Model (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model) Each family of home devices comes with their own transport, and often they come up with their own custom application layer as well. This means that you can't use something made for Alexa with HomeKit unless the developer programmed both. It's caused fragmentation and utter frustration when someone buys a smart light bulb or HVAC controller just to find out that its walled off from the rest of their devices. The goal of Matter is to unify the upper layers (https://developers.home.google.com/matter/primer) so that devices can be discovered and controlled by any kind of hub: from a DIY Raspberry Pi to an official device from Apple, Google/Nest, Meta, or other - much like you can use your Windows desktop or Android phone to view a website designed on a Mac, and hosted on Linux. The biggest companies in this space, Amazon, Apple and Google, have already signed on to make sure that their products adhere to Matter's API (https://csa-iot.org/members/). You, the engineer tasked with creating the next new product line for your company, should be interested in whether or not this "Matters" to you. The good news is that joining an ecosystem means you can make a small device that competes in a 'big playground' of sensors, voice agents, automation tools, and gateways. (https://pages.silabs.com/rs/634-SLU-379/images/Matter_Certification_The_Value_it_Brings_to_IoT%20Devices.pdf) But need to play nicely with the others - not scream in kids' ears, errr... overwhelm the share spectrum resource. We also have to let every device have a turn at commands, and not interfere with their behavior. Thus, Matter certification! Silicon Labs has a white paper on Understanding The Path to Certifying Your Matter Devices (https://www.silabs.com/whitepapers/how-to-certify-matter-devices) Moreover you can get started immediately by picking up one or two of Silicon Labs' MG24 development kits (https://www.digikey.com/short/0rc3n5f7) for less than $40 and you can begin immediately with developing on the EFR32MG24 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/base-product/silicon-labs/336/EFR32MG24A010/629647) a well-documented, low-power friendly chip with built in 2.4 GHz radio. Inside is a Cortex M33 running at 78 MHz, with 1.0 to 1.5MB of flash and 128 to 256KB of SRAM (https://www.digikey.com/short/f8z8rbvn) so it's got plenty of room to handle multiple protocol stacks, security layers and any RTOS or Matter layers. SiLabs has been making radio-inclusive chips for many many years, so you know that there will be great support and documentation. We also have the beginnings of a CircuitPython port for this chip (https://circuitpython.org/board/sparkfun_thing_plus_matter_mgm240p/) although at the time of this writing there is not Matter support built in, it would still be very helpful for bringing up a development board and verifying hardware. Want to take Matter into your own hands? DigiKey has you covered here: the XG24-EK2703A Explorer Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/silicon-labs/XG24-EK2703A/17051436) is a great starting point with USB, mikroBus-compatible GPIO headers, debug port, and Qwiic/QT port. (https://www.digikey.com/en/videos/s/silicon-labs/mg24-development-kit-datasheet-preview) For final integration, you can also pick up raw chips such as the Silicon Labs EFR32MG24A010F1536IM48 (https://www.digikey.com/short/07qww54q) or integrated modules (https://www.digikey.com/short/3n4rp9dt) that have passives and antenna wired up for quick usage. All are in stock for immediate shipment - order today and DigiKey will deliver to you Matter on a silver platter by tomorrow afternoon! Matrix portal s3 shifting sand 🔀📲📅⏳💔🔄🔌💡🏜️🆕
We're slowly but surely trying to de-SAMD51'ify our product line since that chip has a 2024 ETA. a bummer because we really loved that chip but it's probably a good time to transition since it can be a year until we get some and even then, the dates have been pushed multiple times. so, first up is the matrix portal m4 https://www.adafruit.com/product/4745 ! instead of a samd51 + esp32, we've got a version with ESP32-S3 WROOM which has 8MB of flash, and 2MB of PSRAM. the S3 has a nice peripheral that can be used to drive these matricies very fast, and the 2 MB of PSRAM will make this possible to drive lots of panels! we kept the same outline shape and functionality, including the built in accelerometer, which makes this LED sand demo a quick port. EyeSpi for a Pi on the 4th of July 🎆🔌🖥️👀🥧🔬🛠️🔄🤖💡
we're always plugging stuff into our raspberry pi to make little demos and we finally decided to make an open-source hardware quick-connecting accessory for any Pi or single board linux computer with pi-compatible 2x20 header. this slim board adds two tactile buttons on gpio 5 and 6, a slide switch on gpio 13, and both EYESPI https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=eyespi and Stemma QT ports https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-adafruit-stemma-qt for attaching displays, E-Inks, or I2C devices with no soldering required. here we have a 2.0" ST7789 display https://www.adafruit.com/product/4311 connected up and running our GIF player demo https://learn.adafruit.com/pitft-linux-python-animated-gif-player this board will probably live on our Pi full time for fast prototyping goodness, and of course, once we're done testing all the GPIO we'll also put it into the shop. Final shield test for a Metro-shaped RP2040 🔬🚇🛠️🔌📲💾🚀📈✅🏭
We're testing out prototypes of a new Metro https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=metro RP2040 https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=rp2040 , while the 'classic Arduino shape' is not as popular these days with dev boards as it used to be, we like the roomy layout, with lots of socket headers, and plenty of space for accessories like a MicroSD card socket with both SPI and SDIO pinout, SWD debug port, Stemma QT, and 12V DC power port. our last test is always to plug in our 2.8" captouch TFT shield https://www.adafruit.com/product/1947 because it tests both SPI and I2C. this passes and since all the GPIO are accounted for, we just have to wrap up the silk and it's off to fabrication! "I guess I just miss my friend" - The Shawshank Redemption, Teddy Ruxpin edition by Adafruit
"I guess I just miss my friend" - The Shawshank Redemption, Teddy Ruxpin edition by Adafruit - this is the hacked Teddy Ruxpin we made for our kiddo that allows custom audio, new mouth movements synced with the audio, custom/new eye movements and more. This is the 2017 Teddy Ruxpin that on launch was $100 to $200, the company quickly went out of business and there are tons of these bears for less than $20 on eBay - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Ruxpin?useskin=vector#Wicked_Cool_Toys Guide and more coming soon. The Shawshank Redemption (1995) Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman star in a compelling drama of hope, friendship and atonement behind the walls of a maximum security prison in The Shawshank Redemption. From a novella by best-selling author Stephen King comes a poignant tale of the human spirit. Red (Freeman), serving a life sentence, and Andy Dufresne (Robbins), a mild-mannered banker wrongly convicted of murder, forge an unlikely bond that will span more than twenty years. Together they discover hope as the ultimate means of survival. Under horrifying conditions and the ever-present threat of violence, two lifers reclaim their souls and find freedom within their hearts in The Shawshank Redemption. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/ Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Super Mario Magic Wand 3dprinting
Build a Magikoopa Wand with Adafruit’s New RP2040 PropMaker Feather. Guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/mario-magic-wand We designed and 3D printed a magic wand inspired by the Super Mario Brothers movie. It’s got motion activated lights and sound with a spinning crystal gem. This new Feather is an all-in-one dev board that features an I2S amp, accelerometer, NeoPixel driver, Servo Header Pins, STEMMA QT and screw block terminals. It’s got the RP2040 chip with 8MB of SPI flash, 21 GPIO pins, and lipo battery charging over USB-C. With CircuitPython, the board acts like a USB drive so you can easily customize the code with just about any computer. You can modify the code to fit your project, just change the values such as the NeoPixel color, speed or the accelerometer threshold. quad-rotary board is getting ready to stock 🔁🎛️💻🔄🔌
this seesaw board converts 4 rotary encoders to I2C for adding a ton of twists. like our other attiny8xx boards, we use a metro m0 to do the programming of the UPDI interface, then communicate over I2C to check each pin is not shorted or open. this will be in the shop soon so don't get your knickers in a twist! https://www.adafruit.com/product/5752 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #QuadRotaryBoard #I2C #RotaryEncoders #ATtiny8xx #MetroM0 #UPDI

Mini USB hub proto is a universal USB port expander 🔌💡🖥️📲🔄💻🎛️🧩
Sometimes you've got something with USB host, like a embedded linux board, and you want to connect more than one thing. or maybe you want to turn something like a keyboard into a multi-device USB peripheral. this usb hub board will do that for you! it features an SL2.1 USB 2.1 hub chip which converts one port into four. we have either 0.1" header or USB C for the upstream, and then 4 x 4-pin ports for peripheral connections. to test it out we're using our 'simple' USB-breakout cables https://www.adafruit.com/product/4449 that just give the 5V/D+/D-/GND pins on wires for quick testing. all is good, this is ready to order! Yes! Stemma QT boards work with the Arduino UNO R4! 🎉🔌🛠️📡💡🌐
we just got our UNO R4 WiFi, featuring the Renesas RA4M1 series of chips https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/05/25/eye-on-npi-renesas-ra4m1-microcontroller-series-eyeonnpi-digikey-renesasglobal-digikey-adafruit/ an ESP32 wifi co-processor, an adorable LED grid, and a JST SH 4-pin connector...a.k.a a Qwiic port! Yay it is so great to see this connector becoming standardized on so many platforms. It means that all of our STEMMA QT devices https://www.adafruit.com/category/1018 will work plug-and-play. Here we're testing it with an OLED https://www.adafruit.com/product/938 and SHT41 breakout https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=sht4 we only had to update our demo to use Wire1 instead of Wire, since the secondary I2C bus is used for this connector. No soldering required! #adafruit #arduino #renesas Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- @Arduino @RenesasPresents

What's better than ice cream? Re-visiting a mid-2020 design! ZED-F9P RTK board 🍦🔄🎯🛰️
nothing is as satisfying as a scoop mint chocolate-chip on a hot day...except maybe finishing a board design from 2020! this ZED-F9P is an RTK 'real time kinematics' board https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/06/08/eye-on-npi-u-blox-c099-f9p-application-board-for-zed-f9p-gnss-rtk-module-eyeonnpi-adafruit-digikey-digikey-ublox/ that can do high precision location. kinda like a GPS/GNSS but with centimeter accuracy. they're not cheap but there's really nothing else that works as well. these are modules from uBlox and they're finally in good supply at DigiKey https://www.digikey.com/short/8v5rjw15 . our shield design is nice and spacious and would be a great fit for a Metro ESP32-S2 https://www.adafruit.com/product/4775 which has DC, USB and LiPoly input. we'll be sending out for prototype PCBs this week!
