The Great Search - Single Channel 3V to 5V level shifter

The Great Search - Single Channel 3V to 5V level shifter https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/74AHCT1G126SE-7/2711993 On our new Prop-Maker Feather we like to do a 'favor' to our users by level shifting the NeoPixel signal from 3.3V to 5V. We don't always need this but some NeoPixel chipsets are a little finicky about the levels, especially if you have a 5.5V or 6V power line on the NeoPixels. We'll use a single buffer, and it needs to be small, so we'd like a tiny package. We'll also review the 74 series logic family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7400-series_integrated_circuits) to verify what series we want to filter out when we search on DigiKey for this part. EYE on NPI: Vybronics' Rectangular LRA Vibration Motor

This week's EYE ON NPI passes the vibe check - it's Vybronics' Rectangular LRA Vibration Motor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/v/vybronics/rectangular-lra-vibration-motor) and friends - a series of linear resonant actuators, AKA LRA, used to create vibration/haptic feedback. Haptics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haptic_technology) were first used in airplanes - where originally there was a mechanical connection between the pilot controls and the plane steering. That is, when turning or tilting the yoke, it would mechanically control any flaps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_flight_control_system). However, that means that the pilot would have to be strong enough to move the flaps while also keeping track of all the different controls needed - a recipe for disaster because a tired or confused pilot could make a catastrophic mistake! So, instead, the control of aircraft turned to hydro-mechanical and then servo-electrical. You might see the same on modern cars: instead of the steering wheel directly controlling the tire angle, it now send a signal that is interpreted by motors that do the actual movement, also known as Drive by wire. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_by_wire) The trade-off with drive or fly-by-wire is that there's less need for strength and speed by the person in the cockpit - but they do lose the mechanical feedback that would normally be fed back through the mechanical linkages. That feedback is important because it allows you to feel when something might be blocking or fighting against the motion - in planes you can tell the airspeed and the craft's stress level. Sure you can put this information in a gauge of some sort but it requires the operator to look and interpret a number when the feeling is more intuitive. Thus the invention of force feedback or...haptics! Haptics have been tirelessly used in automotive and aircraft for decades, when in the 90's they had a bit of a resurgence as part of VR interfaces. If you're in a 3D rendered virtual world, you want to feel when you bumped into something or grabbed an item successfully. For gaming, an early form of 'play by wire' we've moved from the 1994 Aura Interactor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aura_Interactor) to being included in almost every game controller, like the 1997-released N64 Rumble Pak (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumble_Pak) and Playstation DualShock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DualShock) as vibrational feedback when moving or taking damage. Mobile devices are also big users of haptic feedback - originally as vibration alert for 'silent mode' - but now also for typing and UX feedback. For vibration feedback, a basic ERM motor such as the Vybronics VZ43FC1B5640007L (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/vybronics-inc/VZ43FC1B5640007L/12323649) will do fine - turn it on to cause a vibration that can be detected even when the phone is in a bag or pocket. But if you want to have 'sharper' feedback, these ERMs aren't as good because they take time to turn on and get up to speed. So they're good for big motion but not quick motion. That's when you want to use LRAs - Linear Resonant Actuators. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/v/vybronics/rectangular-lra-vibration-motor) Vybronics makes a wide range of LRA vibration motors (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/jinlong-machinery) in addition to their wide range or ERM's. You can select from different sizes - larger ones will of course have a stronger feedback response, but will require more energy and size. ERM's are really easy to drive: provide a positive DC voltage and the motor starts moving. LRA's are harder to control, you will need an AC waveform to kick-start the resonant motion. (https://www.vybronics.com/lra-assembly-drawing) Our favorite driver is the TI DRV2605 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/DRV2605LDGSR/5014144) which we even have a breakout board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/2305/5356831) to make it easy to connect up to a Vybronics LRA. The DRV2605 even comes with a wide range of built-in waveform actions (https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/drv2605.pdf) to make integration very easy. Vybronics also has some examples of how to mount their motors with PCB contacts to allow the motor to vibrate within a cavity.(https://www.vybronics.com/mounting-with-spring-contacts) Vybronics' Rectangular LRA Vibration Motors such as the VLV152564W (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/vybronics-inc/VLV152564W/19203005) will make the vibe right in your product that requires tactile haptic feedback to improve your user experience. With their small cases and high strength, they'll turn glass touchscreens and capacitive touch buttons into something that feels like a mechanical control surface. Order today and DigiKey will ship your motor instantly so that you can be tick-tack-

EYE on NPI Nexperia NEH2000BY Energy Harvesting Power Management IC

This week's EYE ON NPI is enjoying the beautiful weather with you, whether sitting in the sun or lounging in the shade - all's good because we've got Nexperia's NEH2000BY Energy Harvesting Power Management IC with embedded solar MPPT capability! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/neh2000by-energy-harvesting-power-management-ic) This tiny, low-cost chip is a one-stop solution for extending the life of your product by making it powered by small solar cells. This chip is perfect for wearables or miniature sensor nodes, maybe with a LoRa radio, WiFi or Bluetooth Low Energy where space and pricing is important. For example, an asset tracker, traffic monitor, activity watch, or agricultural sensor network: stuff that is outside anyways so it'll be designed for outdoor use and have lots of sun exposure. We've covered other MPPT tracking solar harvesting chips (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/04/23/eye-on-npi-max20361-tiny-single-multi-cell-solar-harvester-maximintegrated/), and the NEH2000BY has some advantages in size, cost and simplicity. Either use it to increase the time between charges, or use it to have your product be fully encased with no need for charging at all, thanks to the power of the SUN (https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/solar-system/sun/galleries/?page=0&per_page=25&order=created_at+desc&search=&href_query_params=category%3Dsolar-system_sun&button_class=big_more_button&tags=sun&condition_1=1%3Ais_in_resource_list&category=51) The Nexperia NEH2000BY energy harvester (https://www.digikey.com/short/hpnfttw3) is designed specifically for use with solar cells because cells collapse under high current draw - which is what batteries want when they are charging up so that they can be ready to go ASAP! When drawing current from a solar cell, at the very beginning the voltage is very high, then is slowly drops down as more is drawn until the input voltage collapses completely. So you have to be very careful when drawing current - too little and you lose out on efficiency, too much and your power goes away completely. There's a 'sweet spot' right in the middle, where you can get the most power output, which is called the Max Power Point. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_power_point_tracking) And this point varies with how much sunlight you get - so it isn't something you can pre-program in with a comparator or anything. Instead, the energy harvester has to wiggle the power draw forward and back to find the maximum point. For large-scale solar installations, you'd have a microcontroller do the math for you, and adjust throughout the day - it isn't hard to do MPPT it just takes measurement and computation. But in small and low-current situations, you can't spend all your power budget on a microcontroller to manage your battery charger. First up, almost no extra components are needed: just a stabilization capacitor plus a capacitor for the switched-cap boosting doubler. Note that there's no inductor because it seems to use a switched-cap boosting method for approximately 2x voltage output - so you will need to spec a panel that, when the MPPT voltage is approximately doubled, you'll have about 0.3V above the battery voltage. There's some math in the datasheet to work this out but basically in the end, use a panel with an open-circuit voltage - Voc - that is about 0.7 times the battery voltage. So, e.g. if you're using a Lipoly (https://www.digikey.com/short/h02tmj1q), with a VBat of 4.2V, use a 3V solar panel - which is very common and inexpensive. For NiMH cells, add up the total series voltage before multiplying by 0.7 for the Voc desired. To keep your battery from over-charging, either use a separate battery charger chip that will do the constant-current to voltage-limited charging, or use a low cost over-voltage protection (OVP) chip as recommended in the datasheet. If you'd like to integrate the Nexperia NEH2000BY Energy Harvesting Power Management IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/hpnfttw3) into your next solar-powered product, thank your lucky stars because DigiKey has the NEH2000BY in stock right now at a great price for immediate shipment. With the long summer days ahead, you can order today and be max-power-point'ing before the sun sets tomorrow.

The Great Search: Bluetooth LE Modules with nRF5 Chipset

This week we've been doing some more toy hacking on a 2017 edition Teddy Ruxpin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Ruxpin) - this toy has a SONIX SN7001 plus an nRF51 module (https://media.defcon.org/DEF%20CON%2026/DEF%20CON%2026%20presentations/DEFCON-26-Amir-Etemadieh-Zenofex-Dissecting-Teddy-Ruxpin-Reverse-Engineering-the-Smart%20Bear.pdf) for the Bluetooth LE connectivity to an app. Why not an all-in-one BLE chipset? Well perhaps now-a-days you'd be able to run the whole thing off of an nRF52 or nRF53 but at the time the SONIX chip was probably a well-trod core for many toys, with ready-to-go SDK and a Cortex M4 for audio / graphics handling, and the nRF51 was one of the only reliable BLE chips available. You may also want to add BLE to an existing design, DigiKey has lots of BLE modules that you can use either for standalone or as a 'BLE friend forever' - a.k.a. BFF! Let's check out what's available for your modulating needs. See on DigiKey at https://www.digikey.com/short/bbw04mfh

3Com Ergo Audrey (2000) 💻🌈🕰️🏡🍎🍽️🌐💾💪🌐🔌🎨🌈💃✨🕵️‍♀️💻🗺️🌟

3Com's Ergo Audrey was an internet appliance, released in 2000 and discontinued 7 months later. Designed by Don Fotsch and Ray Winninger, Audrey was intended to be part of a family of devices, each serving a specific room in the house. The kitchen was their initial focus "Internet Snacking" - lightweight web browsing in a home setting. Audrey had a touchscreen LCD interface and came equipped with a stylus. It was powered by a 200 MHz Geode GX1 CPU, with 16 MB of flash ROM and 32 MB of RAM, a modem, two USB ports, and a CompactFlash socket for connectivity. Available in colors like "linen", "meadow", "ocean", "slate", and "sunshine". Named in honor of Audrey Hepburn. 3Com discontinued Audrey in June 2001. The hardware hacker community embraced the leftover Audreys, discovering exploits and modifying the device for their own needs. Despite its short lifespan, Audrey's innovative design and functionality made it a unique piece of internet appliance history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3Com_Audrey #3Com #3ComAudrey #InternetAppliance #RetroTech #Retro

Teddy Ruxpin hacking 🧸📚🎶🗣️🤖

shhh! the baby is asleep, which means the parents are up hacking baby toys...we're following/recreating the DEFCON 26 Teddy Ruxpin reverse-engineering talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7SIL_JNSto by super-hacker team @zenofex and @Exploiteers https://twitter.com/Exploiteers to bring this now-no-longer-supported Teddy Ruxpin 2017 edition back to life and maybe create some custom content as well! our first step? parse out the SNXROM file to replace the eye bitmap frames in a 'story file' using python and Pillow. we just replaced em all with this adafruit logo but you could use any 128x128 RGB drawings. now that we know that works, next we'll be poking at the audio32 format to try and decode/encode custom audio. our poking and prodding is over at https://github.com/ladyada/Adafruit_Learning_System_Guides/tree/main/Teddy_Ruxpin #adafruit #teddyruxpin #animatronics

EYE on NPI: Renesas RA4M1 Microcontroller Series

This week's EYE ON NPI is Big In Japan, it's the Renesas RA Microcontroller Series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/ra-mcus) available at DigiKey in a wide range of sizes and configurations. With the chip shortage easing up, it's a great time to look at what chips to use for your next design. And while we have covered a ton of Arm Cortex microcontrollers on EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=eye+on+npi+cortex), we haven't yet taken a look at Renesas' RA offerings. Renesas is a company created by the merging of the silicon design groups from Hitachi, NEC and Mitsubishi Electric (https://www.youtube.com/@RenesasPresents), so not surprisingly it's very Japanese-focused and used a lot in Japanese electronics companies but not as often in the USA. However, it's always good to have more competition and with the Arm Cortex standard, it's easy to move from one chip vendor to another without having to do a lot of re-targeting. So let's take a look! We saw Renesas highlighted over on DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/ra-mcus) and the same day also received our new Early Access Arduino UNO R4 Minima (https://store.arduino.cc/pages/unor4) for us to use in making sure all our libraries work. The UNO R4 is the long-awaited upgrade to the popular R3 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/A000073/3476357) which came with an 8-bit, 16 MHz, 16 KB Flash, 2KB SRAM chip. While Arduino has come out with many other dev boards since then, the UNO hadn't got an update to 32-bit in a while. The challenge? Finding an affordable 32-bit chip with native USB, Cortex M3 or M4, good software SDK and 5V compatibility. That last part is the hardest, for example there's no ATSAM chip that has both USB and 5V compliance. An acquaintance just came back from a holiday in Japan and she mentioned that "everything is just...a little better there than here in the US!" and that's how we felt when looking at the RA4M1 datasheet (https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/renesas-ra4m1-group-datasheet) The RA4M1 series is a great pick for an 8-bit upgrade. The core is a Cortex M4 which means you're going to get good speedy computation with built in floating point and DSP instructions. For flash memory, 256 KB stores your code and there's a separate 8KB "EEPROM" like section. For RAM, 32 KB is available. It's got all the peripherals you expect such as timers, DMA, ADCs, USB full-speed, I2C, SPI, and UART as well as some upgrades you can't get on 8-bit chips. For example, the ADC is 14 bits, and there's also a 12-bit DAC. There's 4 internal op-amps and 8 total timers! There's two I2Cs, SPIs and UARTs and also CAN bus. A built in RTC is a true real time clock, with battery backup. There's also capacitive touch sensing and a segment LCD controller - our friend Joey Castillo will love that! (https://www.joeycastillo.com/objects/lcdwing/). In addition - we also saw some really beautiful silkscreen board designs for the Renesas Gadget Series (https://www.renesas.com/us/en/products/gadget-renesas) as well as an online code editor for compiling for the chip series. (https://www.renesas.com/us/en/products/gadget-renesas/boards/gr-sakura/project-sketch-on-web-compiler) We're hoping some of that work gets revitalized with the many makers folks who will be hacking with the R4. If you can't wait to try the Renesas RA4M1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/wt4b872q) chip out, Digikey has an affordable RA4M1 dev board in stock (https://www.digikey.com/short/3qzr0bbw) which comes with a J-Link on-board debugger with separate USB port, a few onboard peripherals, current sensing jumpers, and tons of GPIO so you can prototype your design quickly. Once you've got your design sorted out, chips are available for immediate shipment in TQFP (https://www.digikey.com/short/f3m2pffz) and QFN (https://www.digikey.com/short/fn2m9bbm). Order these from DigiKey and you will say "Konnichi wa" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konnichiwa) to a new family of microcontrollers by tomorrow morning.

Tutorial: Magic AI Storybook with ChatGPT, Raspberry Pi and Voice Recognition with Open AI

Build a magic neverending story book with a Raspberry Pi and touchscreen, and ChatGPT. We've added a voice recognition module using Open AI, so all you need to do is speak to the storybook and ask for the story you want, and your book will give you endless stories. Full build tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/magic-storybook-with-chatgpt/overview We live in an age of wonder. Every day, new innovations and inventions change the way we interact with the world around us and with each other. Many of the marvels we read about in the science fiction stories of our youth are suddenly, magically possible with a little clever engineering and a healthy dose of imagination. This guide will show you how to create your own never-ending story book using a Raspberry Pi and a touch screen display. Speak your request out loud, and the book will write you an original story based on your prompt. The software uses Open AI to leverage ChatGPT, a language-based AI, to fill an endless storybook with imaginative stories. This code includes an editable prompt file called bookprompt.txt, so you can dictate the character names, story length, writing style, or any other parameters you'd like. Your daughter will love reading stories about herself and her cat as they adventure through an endless world of imagination, in the style of Dr. Seuss! The Great Search: Zener Diodes

Zener diodes (https://blog.adafruit.com/2013/07/17/your-moment-of-zener/) really are amazing little devices, useful for a dozen different circuits. (https://www.evilmadscientist.com/2012/basics-introduction-to-zener-diodes/) We like to use a Zener clamp (https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/chapter%208.pdf) as a basic method of protecting analog inputs on some of our dev boards so you can plug 5V in by accident and nothing bad will happen to the chip GPIO. EYE on NPI: Bosch Sensortec BMI323 Inertial Measurement Unit

This week's EYE ON NPI will get you designing IMUs #LikeABosch (https://www.bosch.com/stories/like-a-bosch/) with the Bosch Sensortec BMI323 Inertial Measurement Unit (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bosch-sensortec/bmi323-inertial-measurement-unit). A low cost, but high precision 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) that has 16-bit accelerometer and 16-bit gyroscope for quality output at a great price. This sensor comes with two sensors combined inside: an accelerometer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerometer) and a gyroscope (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyroscope) - both MEMS sensors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEMS). Bosch has a ton of experience with making MEMS sensors - one of our very favorite sensors is the Bosch BNO055 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bosch-sensortec/BNO055/6136301) which has accelerometer, gyro and also magnetometer as well as a SAMD21 chip inside that runs a sensor fusion algorithm, which makes it great for projects that want to get going with full orientation data quickly. But you'll pay for that convenience: the BNO055 costs about $7.50 a hefty BOM cost. If you've already got a microcontroller on your design, say a Cortex M series or ESP32 or other fairly powerful chip with an FPU or secondary core, you can save a bundle by DIY'ing your own sensor fusion. You can even do some very basic orientation sensing with just a 6-axis sensor like this one, or if you want to also fuse in magnetometer data, the BMM150 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bosch-sensortec/BMM150/4196671) is a great mini I2C sensor that will work with any Bosch 6-axis IMU - combine with the BMI323 and for about $3 total you can have great 9-DoF sensor. Then you can use Bosch's Sensor Fusion Software (https://www.bosch-sensortec.com/software-tools/software/sensor-fusion-software/) BSXlite which comes as binary blobs for ARM Cortex chips that take in the raw sensor values and pop out quaternion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaternion) and Euler angles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler_angles) - you could probably request for them to compile it for another chip family like Tensilica or RISC-V if you like. The BMI323 has 16-bit data out for both sensors, and FIFO's so you will get quality data without skipping a sample. There's a full datasheet that goes through every setting and register for the BMI323 but if you'd like to skip the low-level implementation part, Bosch has been great for releasing portable C code support for their chips and the BMI3 series has its own github repo (https://github.com/BoschSensortec/BMI323-Sensor-API) with just about all functionality implemented. Note it's fairly 'generic' code, with Linux Kernel headers but otherwise without HAL implementation, so you'll need to port the common.c file to your platform (https://github.com/boschsensortec/BMI323-Sensor-API/tree/main/examples/common) to read and write I2C or SPI and add chip-specific delay. If the idea of a low cost IMU has you doing the twist or shaking your arms in excitement, the Bosch Sensortec BMI323 Inertial Measurement Unit (https://www.digikey.com/short/m33tnfdn) is in stock now at Digi-Key, with thousands of pieces ready for instant purchase. Order today and Digi-Key will package and ship your shipment instantly: you'll be motion sensing #LikeABosch (https://www.bosch.com/stories/like-a-bosch/) by tomorrow afternoon.
