EYE on NPI: 3M's RP+ VHB™ Tapes

This week's EYE on NPI is going to stick around for a long time: it's 3M's RP+ VHB™ Tapes (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/rp-vhb-tapes) the latest version of the 3M VHB family that has been solving 'how to stick this to that' for over 40 years. Digi-Key stocks all sorts of shapes from strips, rolls and sheets - and all the different thicknesses, temperature gradients and adhesive variations. 3M VHB tapes (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/rp-vhb-tapes) have been used for almost every industry: from architectural, to automotive, to appliances and electronic device both hand-held and large-scale. VHB stands for Very High Bond, so it's used for semi-permanent installations. Chances are you've used it before, think of the last time you had to stick something together and it came with a red plastic liner - our desk's headset hanger came with a 2"x2" square and it's been holding strong for almost 10 years! VHB doesn't require the mix-and-apply messiness of epoxy (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/DP100-CLEAR/8635645), it's way stronger than hot glue (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/TC-TC-Q-GEN-II/17139392) and it won't dry out like plain foam tapes.(https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/4116-1-2-X36YD/5127897). Usage is simple when hand-applying: prep the surface by cleaning first so there's no dirt or dust or oil, dry and abrade if needed - most surfaces do not need abrasion but it can increase the bond strength, apply one side of the tape and apply pressure to 'wet-out' the adhesive into the surface, then remove the thin plastic sheet cover, and press on the other side to the tape. Apply firm pressure again to make sure the adhesive squeezes out. The bond will be at 50% strength after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours, and 100% at 72 hours. You can speed it up by heating to 150 *C / 66 *F for one hour. (https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/1400379O/3m-vhb-tape-design-guide.pdf) In addition to shapes, there are also different thicknesses and firmness to the foam - up to 1.6mm thicker foam will be able to conform to rougher uneven surfaces but now the foam itself has some flexibility. Some VHBs can handle high or low temperatures for outdoor or industrial uses. For electronics and robotics, it can be great for attaching displays, mounting sensors, or making enclosures screw-less. DigiKey stocks a wide range of different lengths and widths of 3M VHB tape (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/rp-vhb-tapes) from half-inch (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m-tc/RP-040GF-0-5-X18YD/17197505) to 6" wide (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m-tc/RP-060GF-6-X18YD/17197489) to massive 44 inch wide (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/RP-060GF-44-X36YD/16684748) rolls! There are also sheets that can be cut by hand or with a die (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/RP-040GF-8-5-X11/16684766) all in stock and available for instant shipment. So if you need to stick this-to-that and keep it that way for a long time, order some VHB tape from DigiKey today and you can have it in hand by tomorrow afternoon.

PCB of the Day! The 2.8" TFT Shield revision finally working nicely 🔧📈✅

Whew, it has been a JOURNEY to revise this 2.8" TFT shield https://www.adafruit.com/product/1651, but we finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. By setting up the TSC2007 through a secondary LDO connected to the power-reset chip, we've eliminated the annoying I2C latch-up. So now we have to design a tester. In this case, we will use a Metro RP2040 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5786, quickly becoming my go-to Metro for test jigs since it has many GPIO, a built-in ROM bootloader, and fast peripherals. Here the chip looks for an SD card plugged into a shield, then displays the image with a touch paint interface for testing all functionality fast! We will order these PCBs tonight and finally put this revision behind us. First round touch display working with ESP32-S3 👉🔴🟢🔵

We showed off some fabulous shaped displays last week - and now we're getting them running! This is a 2.1" 480x480 round display with SPI configuration and an 18-bit RGB interface. Thankfully there is already an Arduino library https://github.com/Lzw655/ESP32_Display_Panel that supports the SPI configuration over port expander stuff on this eval board, plus the touchscreen drivers, too - it saved me a lot of time! The chipset is ST7701, a typical TFT panel driver. You definitely have to initialize the display first with the proper configuration before you can blast RGB data for it to show up, but we were able to noodle that together here https://github.com/ladyada/ESP32_Display_Panel/blob/master/src/lcd/ST7701.cpp#L37, and now it's looking great. Now we know this display and touch setup works, we'll start ordering the displays for us to stock and use. PCB of the Day! ESP32-S3 can drive TTL RGB Displays 🔧🖥️🎨

Coming soon - this is a quick sketch we did of an RGB TTL driver PCB to help us try out all our funky-shaped displays. We reused most of the Matrix Portal S3 PCB, but instead of the RGB matrix connector, we popped on a 40-pin FPC. 16 GPIO go to the RGB pins, then there are 4 control pins for HSYNC, VSYNC, DE, and PIXCLK. Three more pins for touch screen I2C and IRQ. Then a NeoPixel, two buttons, and 3 SPI pins for configuring the screen controller, and we're almost out of pins! An I2C GPIO expander could save us a couple pins at the expense of more complex drivers, but for now, we will make it easy to get the displays running, and we can play silly pin games later. Many interestingly shaped TFT screen samples! 🖥️🔄🎨

For our ICN6211 breakout dev board, we will support classic 40-pin 800x480 displays but what about some funky shapes? A second standard 40-pin connector pinout is used on square, bar, and round displays. Some of these have capacitive touch overlays, and all are RGB666 with different resolutions. The 2.1" and 4" round ones look fantastic, as do the bar displays. We even got a 'half round' display that looks like it would be used for car gauges. There are quite a few steps next, but we're getting there - also, the fun fact is that the Espressif ESP32-S3 has RGB TFT support and can drive these displays! Hmmm... The Great Search: 2x5 0.05" JTAG/SWD connector and cable

On our latest ESP32-S3 board, we added a JTAG connector, as we do on many Adafruit Metro microcontroller boards. This is a 'standard' port for SWD or JTAG that is smaller than the common 2x10 connector. This size is common to many debuggers like the Atmel ICE (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/07/01/the-great-search-programmer-debugger-for-atsamd21-chips-adafruit-digikey-microchipmakes/) or J-Link (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/segger-microcontroller-systems/8-08-00/2175882). The connector is a "jellybean" part, with many possible vendors. Let's find a few options that you can put onto your next dev board for easy debugging! Adafruit BusIO library makes debugging I2C failures fast 🛠️💡🔌

It's not often... but every few months, one of our sensor drivers stops working due to hardware changes. It happened this week with the AHT20 tester - for some reason, it doesn't init anymore! What would typically turn into a multi-hour debugging session is a lot easier since we started using an intermediary library called BusIO for I2C/SPI device interactions https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_BusIO - there is a single #define we enable to turn on print debugging and when we recompile and upload - voila we see full translation details including stops and transfer failures. Turns out the secret calibration command no longer exists on AHTs; a quick PR https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_AHTX0/pull/13 , and we're back in business! The Great Search: SMT Pin Headers

This week we're doing some revision work on our 2.8" resistive TFT screen shield (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1651) to modernize it and also replace some unavailable components. Once neat thing about this shield is that since the display is almost exactly the same size as an Arduino, it uses all SMT headers to plug into the mainboard. SMT headers are useful to avoid a selective or wave-soldering step, or in this case, to avoid contact with a metal plate backing. DigiKey, of course, stocks many sizes of these headers and they're not too expensive! Let's take a look at how to find SMT 'male' pin headers on DigiKey in a variety of sizes - we'll also cover some common mistakes when specifying this kind of part! Metro RP2040 Tester is ready to rock! 🔌💻🧠

We sometimes have 'Coming soon' products in the shop - this is usually when products are done and hand-verified, but the automated tester still needs to be finished. For example, this Metro RP2040 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5786, which we have the tester here. Typically metros are tested on a Raspberry Pi, but in this case, we're using the Pico Brains board https://github.com/adafruit/RP2040-Based-Tester-Brains-PCB to do it, and it's able to do all programming and test in 10 seconds - which means we can offer the Metro RP2040 at a very nice price! We'll hand this over to our test-and-prep team and schedule the work order next; you can sign up to be notified when we get the Metro RP2040 in stock next week https://www.adafruit.com/product/5786 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #raspberrypi #arduino #rp2040 #opensource #opensourcehardware #electronics #metro #tester #picobrains #programming #automation #productlaunch #handverification #workorder #stocknotification

Ortho-Keys tester has a plastic pal who's fun to be with ⌨️🔑💡

We were tasked with fixing an older tester for our 5x6 ortho-key break-apart board https://www.adafruit.com/product/5157 . This board has many test points to verify because we have 30 total keys, and each key has the switch contacts and the Neopixel. Pressing down to touch all the Pogo pads simultaneously can be a challenge! We use both standoffs for the mounting hole alignment and a big laser-cut plastic plate that provides even pressure. When all the LEDs go green, you know it's all working! Next, we hand this back to the test-prep leads, which will be put back into production. 2.8" TFT touchscreen revision with TSC2007 🛠️🖥️🚀

We're finally redoing our 2.8" resistive touch screen shield https://www.adafruit.com/product/1651, which has been out of stock for a looooong time due to parts shortages and then TFT pricing nuttiness. This time, we're revising it to use the TSC2007 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5423 and testing it against the new Metro ESP32-S3 prototypes. We've wired the IRQ pin-up, and the touchscreen responsiveness is excellent. One nice thing about using I2C is that we don't have to share the SPI port, so if you're using something like LVGL, which does TFT drawing or touch screen reading in an interrupt, there's less risk of contention. Time Lapse Prototype Build! Adafruit PCF8575 I2C 16 GPIO Expander Breakout - STEMMA QT / Qwiic 🔧🔌⚙️

Expand your project possibilities, with the Adafruit PCF8575 GPIO Expander Breakout - an affordable 16 channel I2C expander. GPIO expanders work like this: you have a board with some number of GPIO but not enough for your project - maybe you need more buttons or LEDs. Connect it over I2C and then you can send/receive I2C commands to control the GPIO pins to write and read them. It's going to be slower than direct GPIO access, but maybe that doesn't matter if it takes a millisecond instead of a microsecond. You only need the two I2C pins, and you can even share the I2C port with other sensors and devices. Heck, you can even add more expanders for massive I/O control! https://www.adafruit.com/product/5611 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #opensource #opensourcehardware #PCF8575 #timelapse electronicsengineering #prototypebuild #gpioexpander #i2c #stemmaqt #diyprojects #makersgonnamake #hardwarehacks #affordabletech #expandableio

EYE on NPI: Sensata Crydom's Series 1 AC Panel Mount Solid State Relays

This week's EYE ON NPI is gonna do you a solid, thanks to Sensata - Crydom's Series 1 AC Panel Mount Solid State Relays (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/sensata-crydom/series-1-ac-panel-mount-solid-state-relays). Solid state relays are a great replacement for mechanical relays, when you want to have high speed switching or want to avoid contact corrosion and replacement. Crydom makes a ton of different SSR's in a variety of power ratings, and while they share the same name as mechanical relays...there's a lot to watch out for when updating your designs! We've highlighted SSR's before on EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/01/07/eye-on-npi-te-ssrmp-series-solid-state-relays-eyeonnpi-digikey-teconnectivity-digikey/). As we've covered before, usually when folks start out turning AC power on and off, they tend to use a relay. Relays (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relay) are simple: inside is a mechanical switch with a ferromagnetic throw. When a nearby coil of wire has current going through it, the coil becomes an electromagnet and pulls the throw to one side. Relays are electrically and mechanically isolated because there’s air between the electromagnetic coil and the switch throw. They're very inexpensive and come in many shapes and power capabilities. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/power-relays-over-2-amps/188) Because relays are electro-mechanical, they have to two properties that may be undesirable. First is speed: it takes a few milliseconds (say about 10ms) to energize that coil and move it to the side. The second is mechanical wear and failure: relays will eventually fail from mechanical stress or oxidation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contact_protection). Every time you switch the relay, a little arc is formed from the mechanical chatter, which creates a little burn on the contact. It’s a very small oxidation, but it adds up, and the more you use a mechanical relay, the faster it will fail. The fail rate depends on the load type, activation voltage, contact material, etc., but they’re in the 10s of thousands. Relays not meant for high speed or repetitive switching, which is why a lot of them are plug-in or easily swappable. That’s where SSRs come in! DigiKey carries over 3,000 different SSR configurations from Sensata (https://www.digikey.com/short/j2mpw3br) including a few options that can control DC and can be switched at low voltages like 3 or 5V DC, great for integration with a microcontroller or microcomputer. Some of the SSRs like the D2490 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensata-crydom/D2490/140621), can even handle up to 90 Amps at 280VAC! These SSRs come in a classic 'hockey puck' shape - two large slots makes them easy to mount onto a heat sink, then 4 terminal blocks with plastic protection. And one of the nice things about Sensata SSRs is that there's a whole family of accessories such as clear plastic covers, thermal pads and heat-sinks. The heat-sinks, in particular, are going to be really important when dealing with switching high currents. For example, the D2490 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensata-crydom/D2490/140621) has a forward voltage of 1.15V on the output, which means that at 10 Amp output, you'll see 1.15 * 10 Amp = 11.5 Watts of power to dissipate - not too bad - but that power rises linearly, so at 20A its 23W, and at 40A its 50W. That heat needs to be pulled away, and a big chunky heatsink will do the job nicely. We've noticed that SSRs tend not to be cooled off with fans, probably because it would be a source of failure in a dusty environment. Check out the Senata documentation for how to calculate your heat sink size (https://www.sensata.com/sites/default/files/media/documents/ourproducts_HS-Series-Heat-Sinks_brochures.pdf), DigiKey also stocks all of the Sensata SSR Heat Sinks you can carry (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/sensata-crydom/series-1-ac-panel-mount-solid-state-relays) as well as thermal pads, lug terminals and clear covers that protect you from high voltage, and the SSR from your grubby fingers. No matter what load you're switching, Sensata has an SSR that will fit perfectly into your design & budget with over 3,000 different SSR offerings (https://www.digikey.com/short/j2mpw3br) - all stocked by DigiKey for immediate shipment! Order your Sensata Crydom SSR and matching heat sink today, and you'll have a safe and reliable solid state relay in your hand by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: Replacement for Raspberry Pi DSI / CSI connector

As we were working on our DSI board, we noticed that, on one of our Pi's, the CSI connector clip had snapped off - sometimes when you're noodling around you can break the retaining clips, they're really not meant for repeated insertions. If this happens to you, or if you want to add a CSI/DSI connector to your design, it's better to fix the clip than to wastefully throw away the whole board. Let's find both vertical and horizontal replacement 15-pin connectors with 1mm pitch! EYE on NPI: Arduino Uno R4 Minima and Uno R4 WiFi Boards

This week's EYE ON NPI is a new spin on an old familiar classic, it's Arduino's UNO R4 Minima and R4 WiFi Boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/uno-r4-minima-and-r4-wifi-boards) now in stock at DigiKey for folks who want a 5V microcontroller board with classic UNO-compatibility but a ton more speed, flash and RAM! The UNO R4 comes in two flavors, the Minima (https://www.digikey.com/short/r70jbj93) is low cost, only $20, whereas the UNO R4 WiFi (https://www.digikey.com/short/qj072pnm) is $27.50 and adds WiFi and BLE via an ESP32-S3 plus a cute monochrome LED grid for scrolling messages or displaying status icons. This pair of dev boards look just like those classic Arduino boards you probably learned to code and hack on, they've been around for almost 20 years, the first board looked very similar, but had a RS232 serial port instead of USB, and all through-hole components (https://blog.arduino.cc/2021/12/09/one-board-to-rule-them-all-history-of-the-arduino-uno/). Through various iterations and improvements, the original board was redesigned to add USB and update to the ATmega168 with the Diecimila (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-diecimila) and then the ATmega328 plus auto-power-switching Duemilanove (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-duemilanove) in 2009. In 2010 the most popular Arduino to date was released, the UNO, which updated the USB port to use an ATmega16u2 and through various small revisions added the IOref pin to allow 3V power/logic and separate I2C pins since A4/A5 were no longer always connected to a TWI peripheral. Since about 2012, which was the release date of the UNO R3, not a lot has happened with that particular configuration/shape. Arduino the company has released a ton more boards but in different form factors, all available at DigiKey: Nano, Due, MKR, Portenta etc. (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/arduino) and you should definitely check them out! But it's also a big deal when the main workhorse of the family gets a respin. Particularly since the new R4 takes a very different direction than the previous UNOs: instead of just upgrading the atmegaxx8 chipset, Arduino has gone with the totally different ARM Cortex-based RA4M series which we've covered on a previous EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/05/25/eye-on-npi-renesas-ra4m1-microcontroller-series-eyeonnpi-digikey-renesasglobal-digikey-adafruit/) In that video we covered a lot about the chip itself so check it out if you're interested in the specifics of that chip family. The chip itself is a similar family to the ARM Cortex M0-based SAMD21 'Arduino Zero' (https://store-usa.arduino.cc/products/arduino-zero?selectedStore=us) but thanks to the Renesas version of this core, we now get the 5V-run RA4M. From Arduino's description, here are some of the updates: - Hardware compatibility with UNO form factor: The UNO R4 Minima maintains the same form factor, pinout, and 5 V operating voltage as its predecessor, the UNO R3. This ensures a seamless transition for existing shields and projects, leveraging the extensive and unique ecosystem already established for the Arduino UNO. - Expanded memory and faster clock: Prepare for more precise calculations and the ability to handle complex projects with ease. The UNO R4 Minima boasts increased memory and a faster clock speed, empowering you to tackle demanding tasks effortlessly. - Extra on-board peripherals: The UNO R4 Minima introduces a range of on-board peripherals, including a 12-bit DAC, CAN BUS, and OP AMP. These additional components provide you with expanded capabilities and flexibility in your designs. - Extended 24 V tolerance: The UNO R4 Minima now supports a wider input voltage range, allowing power supplies up to 24 V. This enables seamless integration with motors, LED strips, and other actuators, simplifying your projects by utilizing a single power source. - SWD connector: Debugging is a critical aspect of any project. Simply connect an external debugger to the UNO R4 Minima and effortlessly monitor the inner workings of your system. Stay in control and gain valuable insights. - HID support: The UNO R4 Minima comes with built-in HID (Human Interface Device) support, enabling it to simulate a mouse or keyboard when connected to a computer via a USB cable. This convenient feature makes it a breeze to send keystrokes and mouse movements to a computer, enhancing usability and functionality. At $20 a piece, these new Arduino UNO R4s (https://www.digikey.com/short/qj072pnm) are a great price for the high quality you get from Arduino - and there's lots of them in stock at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Grab both the UNO R4 Minima (https://www.digikey.com/short/r70jbj93) and UNO R4 WiFi (https://www.digikey.com/short/qj072pnm), and they'll ship immediately so you can get started moving your 8-bit micro projects to Cortex-M4 by tomorrow afternoon
