We're slowly but surely trying to de-SAMD51'ify our product line since that chip has a 2024 ETA. a bummer because we really loved that chip but it's probably a good time to transition since it can be a year until we get some and even then, the dates have been pushed multiple times. so, first up is the matrix portal m4 https://www.adafruit.com/product/4745 ! instead of a samd51 + esp32, we've got a version with ESP32-S3 WROOM which has 8MB of flash, and 2MB of PSRAM. the S3 has a nice peripheral that can be used to drive these matricies very fast, and the 2 MB of PSRAM will make this possible to drive lots of panels! we kept the same outline shape and functionality, including the built in accelerometer, which makes this LED sand demo a quick port. On the Pi Compute IO board and Pi Zeros theres a camera connector that is 22 pins and 0.5mm pitch, whereas the classic Pi's use 15-pin 1mm pitch. what if you want to switch between the two? this lil open-source hardware doo-dad will do it. here we're testing it by connecting a Pi 3 to a 'mini spy camera' modules that would normally go right onto a Pi Zero https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=spy+camera and it works! we're going to also try it the other direction, and then order the PCBs & boards. We're testing out prototypes of a new Metro https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=metro RP2040 https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=rp2040 , while the 'classic Arduino shape' is not as popular these days with dev boards as it used to be, we like the roomy layout, with lots of socket headers, and plenty of space for accessories like a MicroSD card socket with both SPI and SDIO pinout, SWD debug port, Stemma QT, and 12V DC power port. our last test is always to plug in our 2.8" captouch TFT shield https://www.adafruit.com/product/1947 because it tests both SPI and I2C. this passes and since all the GPIO are accounted for, we just have to wrap up the silk and it's off to fabrication! Sometimes you've got something with USB host, like a embedded linux board, and you want to connect more than one thing. or maybe you want to turn something like a keyboard into a multi-device USB peripheral. this usb hub board will do that for you! it features an SL2.1 USB 2.1 hub chip which converts one port into four. we have either 0.1" header or USB C for the upstream, and then 4 x 4-pin ports for peripheral connections. to test it out we're using our 'simple' USB-breakout cables https://www.adafruit.com/product/4449 that just give the 5V/D+/D-/GND pins on wires for quick testing. all is good, this is ready to order! we just got our UNO R4 WiFi, featuring the Renesas RA4M1 series of chips https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/05/25/eye-on-npi-renesas-ra4m1-microcontroller-series-eyeonnpi-digikey-renesasglobal-digikey-adafruit/ an ESP32 wifi co-processor, an adorable LED grid, and a JST SH 4-pin connector...a.k.a a Qwiic port! For our new Metro RP2040 design, we're making sure that the board can be powered by either USB Type C 5V, or DC wall adapters. While it's common to have 5V USB power almost everywhere, DC power is still useful for when you want 12V to also drive a motor or LED strip. In such cases, we'll use a 5.5 / 2.1mm DC jack to allow the most-common-sized plugs to work. These jacks come in a few common configurations, and have different power ratings and usage cases - even though they all look the same! Buck-Boost Converters are power supplies that are 'ambidextrous' - they can convert lower or higher voltages to one steady output. A good idea for if, say, you have something that could be powered by USB or two AA's but you want 3.3V output. Much like the name implies, they can both 'buck' the voltage down, and 'boost' the voltage up. For our Toy Hacker board, let's try to find a low cost buck-boost chip that will give us about 500mA of 3.3V output even from two nearly-dead AA batteries that are 0.9V. We want something somewhat small and fairly inexpensive, efficiency isn't the most important since we expect folks to use rechargeable AAs anyhow. This week we got the prototypes for our 'Toy Hacker' board that replaces the innard of a Baby Einstein take-along-tunes toy with our own tronix. we picked the esp32-s2 as a main core because it has wifi baked in, perfect for when you have a device that is fully enclosed like this one! using the CircuitPython WiFi workflow, we configured the wifi credentials and access password in settings.toml and it pops up on our network. now we can edit code, move files around, etc, without having to undo all those lil screws. This may very well be the first python powered baby toy! This week's EYE ON NPI is going to fuel up your portable battery-powered designs with the Texas Instruments BQ27427 System-Side Impedance Track™ Single-Cell Battery Fuel Gauge (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/bq27427-single-cell-battery-fuel-gauge) a powerful and inexpensive way to add high quality battery monitoring for charge-rate and aging tracking at the system side. Lithium Ion / Polymer batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/batteries-rechargeable-secondary/91) - you love them for their low cost, high power density, and 3.7V nominal voltage, but keeping them recharged and letting people know exactly how much battery life is left is non-trivial. Like most batteries, common LiPoly/LiIon's start with a high peak voltage right after charging of about 4.2V, drop quickly to about 3.7V and then slowly drift down till they get to 3.0V at which point the cut-off circuitry disconnects until they are recharged. It's really easy to tell when the battery is 90% or greater charge, just look for a voltage of 3.9V or higher. It's also pretty easy to tell when they're 10% or less, the voltage will be 3.3V or lower. But that in-between section is tough because the slope during discharge is very shallow and the voltage changes quite a bit with aging, temperature, and discharge rate (https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snva533/snva533.pdf) So while there are battery monitors that can use just the voltage across the battery terminals, they're not going to be as precise as a coulomb-counter design that takes into account both voltage and current. From TI's White Paper on the topic (https://www.ti.com/lit/wp/slpy002/slpy002.pdf): "An impedance-based battery fuel gauge, as the name implies, uses the measured impedance of the battery’s cells as a key input to its remaining capacity predictions. The gauge measures and stores in real-time the battery pack’s resistance as a function of state-of-charge. The real-time resistance profiles along with the stored battery open-circuit voltage tables (open-circuit voltage vs. state-of-charge) enables the gauge to predict the battery pack’s discharge curve (by adjusting for the IR drop) under any system-use condition and temperature. The algorithm uses current integration (coulomb counting) when the system is ON, and open-circuit voltage measurement when the system is OFF or in SLEEP to adjust remaining state-of-charge (RSOC) up or down (for charge or discharge) the predicted discharge curve. By using the predicated discharge curve, the gauge can accurately calculate the battery pack’s remaining discharge capacity (RM) and the system’s run-time to empty (RTTE). Since an impedance track gauge continuously adjusts RM and FCC for impedance and the change in impedance, rate and temperature inefficiencies and aging are inherently taken into account, enabling the gauge to maintain a high level of accuracy throughout the life of the system." Texas Instruments has a few chips in the Impedance Track family (https://www.ti.com/video/6287050244001) - the BQ27427 charger (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/BQ27427YZFR/17748369) is the latest to come out. It's very small, coming as a 9-pin 1.6x1.6 BGA with the center pad being a shared ground so you don't need plugged vias to use. It's also really easy to use, requiring only 2 small stabilization capacitors. Internal temperature monitoring means you don't need a separate thermistor. The high-side 7 mΩ current sense resistor also means one less part on the BOM. I2C pins are used to communicate with the monitor and set battery characteristics. There's also an optional input that can be used to connect to a mechanical or electrical battery insertion switch or to an external thermistor, and an optional output that can be used as a battery low indicator. Because so much is integrated, and the chip is so small, its very easy to pop it into your design between the battery terminal and the VBAT lines that go to your battery charger and power supply. The peak battery voltage and capacity are easy to look up since they're written on the battery. For other configuration settings you can use BQStudio / GaugeStudio (https://www.ti.com/tool/BQSTUDIO) with the TI battery devboard to characterize and customize the learning cycle. Either way, you will need to write the configuration to the sensor on every boot. Pick up the Texas Instruments BQ27427 (https://www.digikey.com/short/18pb1ftw) and other chips from the Impedance Track family (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANrhwCsAnBALqEAOALlCCAF8hQA0) stocked at DigiKey for immediate shipment. This week on the Great Search, we're taking apart a McDonalds McNugget Tetris game (https://tetris.wiki/Tetris_(McDonald%27s)) given away in China for the 40th anniversary of the chicken mcnugget. Unsurprisingly, it's an epoxy blob'd chip that does just about everything! For the background music, a disc piezo is used to make the beeps. This is an intermediate project that gives you advanced results. The software is simple to load and use. Hundreds of animations and color combinations are available right through your fingertips, using any web browser or the free WLED app on your phone. The trickiest part of this tutorial is the wiring. There are a lot of connections to make and some challenging soldering to do, but the rest of the build is fairly easy. Make your jellyfish dance and flow with lights, tentacles, and iridescence. This project would make a great camp "totem" for festivals, or a wonderful costume if it's built onto an umbrella hat. It's also easy to synch two or more jellyfish together over wifi using WLED. with most of our dev boards, sensors and feathers now sporting plug-and-play stemma QT ports (https://learn.adafruit.com/search?q=stemma%2520qt) it can be very fast to put together projects with half a dozen boards snapped together. But now you don't have a breadboard as a mechanical substrate... which is why jepler and scott collaborated on this nifty swirly grid design. originally 3D printed, we decided to upgrade these to an 'aluminum PCB' - note there's no actual copper on here, its just the aluminum backing, and then black soldermask with silkscreen. each square is 0.6 inch x 0.6 inch and there's holes every 0.2 inches. with the various dots and dashes you can pretty much make anything on a 0.1" grid fit. here's our demo to test it out. the aluminum is easy to cut/drill/machine/bend if you need more customization. coming soon to the adafruit shop!
