It's 10pm, do you know where your RTK prototypes are? 🔧🛰️🎯

We juuuuust plugged in this uBlox RTK F9P shield into USB and given the intense cost of these modules https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/u-blox/ZED-F9P-04B/15761778 we definitely had a nervous twitch but then we heard the "ba-dunk" of enumeration and wheeeewww it came up as a serial port. Heartened, we soldered on a right-angle SMA connector https://www.adafruit.com/product/1865 and connected a chonky active antenna https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/u-blox/ANN-MS-0/9817931 . Start up a copy of u-center and huzzah, there is GNSS data streaming out. The Great Search: Replacement for Raspberry Pi DSI / CSI connector

As we were working on our DSI board, we noticed that, on one of our Pi's, the CSI connector clip had snapped off - sometimes when you're noodling around you can break the retaining clips, they're really not meant for repeated insertions. EYE on NPI: Arduino Uno R4 Minima and Uno R4 WiFi Boards

This week's EYE ON NPI is a new spin on an old familiar classic, it's Arduino's UNO R4 Minima and R4 WiFi Boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/uno-r4-minima-and-r4-wifi-boards) now in stock at DigiKey for folks who want a 5V microcontroller board with classic UNO-compatibility but a ton more speed, flash and RAM! The UNO R4 comes in two flavors, the Minima (https://www.digikey.com/short/r70jbj93) is low cost, only $20, whereas the UNO R4 WiFi (https://www.digikey.com/short/qj072pnm) is $27.50 and adds WiFi and BLE via an ESP32-S3 plus a cute monochrome LED grid for scrolling messages or displaying status icons. This pair of dev boards look just like those classic Arduino boards you probably learned to code and hack on, they've been around for almost 20 years, the first board looked very similar, but had a RS232 serial port instead of USB, and all through-hole components (https://blog.arduino.cc/2021/12/09/one-board-to-rule-them-all-history-of-the-arduino-uno/). Through various iterations and improvements, the original board was redesigned to add USB and update to the ATmega168 with the Diecimila (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-diecimila) and then the ATmega328 plus auto-power-switching Duemilanove (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-duemilanove) in 2009. In 2010 the most popular Arduino to date was released, the UNO, which updated the USB port to use an ATmega16u2 and through various small revisions added the IOref pin to allow 3V power/logic and separate I2C pins since A4/A5 were no longer always connected to a TWI peripheral. Since about 2012, which was the release date of the UNO R3, not a lot has happened with that particular configuration/shape. Arduino the company has released a ton more boards but in different form factors, all available at DigiKey: Nano, Due, MKR, Portenta etc. (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/arduino) and you should definitely check them out! But it's also a big deal when the main workhorse of the family gets a respin. Particularly since the new R4 takes a very different direction than the previous UNOs: instead of just upgrading the atmegaxx8 chipset, Arduino has gone with the totally different ARM Cortex-based RA4M series which we've covered on a previous EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/05/25/eye-on-npi-renesas-ra4m1-microcontroller-series-eyeonnpi-digikey-renesasglobal-digikey-adafruit/) In that video we covered a lot about the chip itself so check it out if you're interested in the specifics of that chip family. The chip itself is a similar family to the ARM Cortex M0-based SAMD21 'Arduino Zero' (https://store-usa.arduino.cc/products/arduino-zero?selectedStore=us) but thanks to the Renesas version of this core, we now get the 5V-run RA4M. From Arduino's description, here are some of the updates: - Hardware compatibility with UNO form factor: The UNO R4 Minima maintains the same form factor, pinout, and 5 V operating voltage as its predecessor, the UNO R3. This ensures a seamless transition for existing shields and projects, leveraging the extensive and unique ecosystem already established for the Arduino UNO. - Expanded memory and faster clock: Prepare for more precise calculations and the ability to handle complex projects with ease. The UNO R4 Minima boasts increased memory and a faster clock speed, empowering you to tackle demanding tasks effortlessly. - Extra on-board peripherals: The UNO R4 Minima introduces a range of on-board peripherals, including a 12-bit DAC, CAN BUS, and OP AMP. These additional components provide you with expanded capabilities and flexibility in your designs. - Extended 24 V tolerance: The UNO R4 Minima now supports a wider input voltage range, allowing power supplies up to 24 V. This enables seamless integration with motors, LED strips, and other actuators, simplifying your projects by utilizing a single power source. - SWD connector: Debugging is a critical aspect of any project. Simply connect an external debugger to the UNO R4 Minima and effortlessly monitor the inner workings of your system. Stay in control and gain valuable insights. - HID support: The UNO R4 Minima comes with built-in HID (Human Interface Device) support, enabling it to simulate a mouse or keyboard when connected to a computer via a USB cable. This convenient feature makes it a breeze to send keystrokes and mouse movements to a computer, enhancing usability and functionality. The Great Search: 12V to 5V 2+ Amp buck converter

This week we're working on reviving our old floppy hacking projects by making a dev board that will let us connect to various old-school disk drives to either control or emulate them (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Floppy). These devices used lots of motors and solenoids to spin and eject the discs, so we will need to be able to provide them with a good amount of current. For 3 1/2" floppy drives, 5 Volts at 1 Amp or so is not unusual, and we expect larger disk drives may need even more power. For the other motors, we'll want to have a 12 V power supply input, so we need to convert 12V to 5V, and at these currents, an LDO like the 1117-series (https://www.digikey.com/short/z8vtf00m) will have to dissipate way more heat than we'd be able to get rid of - that's when a buck converter is a great alternative. EYE on NPI: TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter

This week's EYE ON NPI packs quite a punch, it's the powerful TI TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/tps61033-synchronous-boost-converter), a souped-up DC/DC regulator with a generous 5.5 A internal switch, in a tiny SOT package. This chip will chomp through your power generation needs, with a specialty at boosting Li Ion / LiPoly batteries to 5V at up to 2 A continuous current. The TI TPS series (https://www.digikey.com/short/m345b8wt) of boost converters is well-known here at Adafruit, they're the basis for our popular PowerBoost series of boards (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=powerboost) - all-in-one switching converters that will take a LiPoly battery in and give you 5V out for making charging phones or dev-boards easy. We've been using the TPS61090 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS61090RSAR/566911) on boards like the PowerBoost 500 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1903), that has an internal 2 Amp switch. For the PowerBoost 1000 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2030) we go with a TPS61030 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS61030RSAR/610198), with an internal 4A switch. Synchronous boosters with internal switches help engineering in three ways: disabling the chip fully disconnects the output and input without having to worry about the conducting body diode of a FET, it reduces BOM costs because there's two/three fewer components to worry about, and of course it makes layout easier and smaller. For a while, we've had folks ask for a PowerBoost 2000: a board that will take Lipo input and provide 2A output, which would let it easily power single-board computers like a Raspberry Pi 4. Finally there's a chip that will do the job! The TI TPS61033 (https://www.digikey.com/short/vt3wj7t7) really is a fully-integrated synchronous boost converter, only a few passive components are required: input and output bulk capacitors and, of course, an inductor. If you want to operate at 5V fixed output, you don't even need a feedback resistor divider! And, it's in a tiny package compared to the TPS610x0 chips, with thoughtful pin ordering so you can lay out the PCB on 2 layers with chunky fat copper pours to reduce inductance and act as a heat sink. The datasheet specifically steps through component selection for making a 5V 2A output from single cell battery using a 4x4mm 1uH inductor so we're pretty confident that this would make a great PB2K. If you have a rechargeable battery project that needs 5 V output and you want to go with a rock-solid booster that can provide 2 Amps of current, the TI TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter (https://www.digikey.com/short/vt3wj7t7) will make you jump for joy. This is something we've had to deal with, since we like to have solder-less designs but want to avoid using the selective solder machine or hand soldering for just 2 points. We've used Wago SMT terminal blocks on boards like the Bonsai Buckaroo (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4534) and STEMMA relay breakout (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4409) - the latter board we also wanted to avoid having contact terminals that were exposed in case folks were using mains power. However, these are push terminals, and they specifically want *screw-tightening* terminals. Does such a thing exist? First you get the PCB panel, then you get the tester, then you get the Matrix 🔌🧠🔬

We are gettin' really really close to putting the new Matrix Portal S3 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5778 into the shop, here's a tester we use to burn in the self-test code. The RP2040 brains https://github.com/adafruit/RP2040-Based-Tester-Brains-PCB resets the S3 into the ROM bootloader, the sends over compressed binaries via USB. when the self-test starts up it notices that it's in the test jig and performs a self test of the GPIO and voltages. once done, it turns into a demo board that has a basic matrix display output for users to verify functionality. EYE ON NPI - Infineon XDPS2201XUMA1 and ‎170 W AC-DC Charger Design for E-bikes and Power Tools

This week on EYE ON NPI, we are keeping an eye on safety with Infineon's ‎170 W AC-DC Charger Design for E-bikes and Power Tools (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/infineon/170-w-ac-dc-charger-design-for-e-bikes-and-power-tools) featuring the Infineon XDPS2201XUMA1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/h3qfmvc0) digital flyback controller and Infineon IPA60R280P7SXKSA1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/cfvp4f82) 600 Volt, 12 Amp N-Channel power MOSFET. These two best buddies can join forces to help you quickly and safely charge big battery packs such as in e-Bikes and other micro-mobility devices (https://wagner.nyu.edu/rudincenter/areas-focus/micromobility). If you live near any density of folks, and in a place with well-paved roads, you've certainly noticed the increase in e-Bikes, e-Scooters, mono-wheels and other electric 'person-movers'. In NYC we've seen these go from banned to bountiful, as COVID restrictions made food and grocery delivery a bigger business than ever (https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/a-simple-solution-for-getting-cars-off-the-road-right-now.html). They're also popular in lots of countries where folks may not be able to afford cars, motorcycles or even mopeds: an entry-level E-Bike can go for $1000 to $3000 - which is a lot of money but much less expensive than a car. Plus you don't have to pay for gas or parking, you can lock it up outside or in your yard and charge it over a 120V power plug. But, about that charging setup ... these light vehicles (https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/applications/automotive/light-vehicles/) use very big batteries: a common 48V 250 Watt-hours is 26 18650 sized batteries connected in series - with extremely high discharge pulses necessary if you want to haul around a 75 lb bicycle plus a 200 lb cargo of human plus groceries. Also important is the ability to charge quickly. If you're using the e-Bike for a courier job, or you take it work, and you need to charge it in order to get back home, you don't want to wait around 16 hours. But that also means that bicycles are often charged unattended, and that could mean that a poor engineering job on the charging circuit can lead to tragedy (https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/07/e-bike-battery-lithium-ion-fire/674622/). The Great Search - Small 2, 3 and 4-Port USB Hub Chips https://www.digikey.com/short/154zf0z3 We recently did a design for a simple 4-port USB hub - but we wanted to also show off some nicer hub chips available! Hub chips are available in 2, 3 and 4 port designs, and can be configured with LEDs, custom USB descriptors, and over-current detection. These could be useful when you have a product with more than one USB-interface chip (say one for native, one for debug USB) so that instead of two confusing USB ports you can have one interface with both devices exposed! Or, if you are designing a board with embedded linux, you can take advantage of the built in hub support to have multiple USB ports. There's also some interesting integrated hub chips like the LAN9513 https://www.digikey.com/short/jfmb83zv which has an Ethernet chip built in. RA8875 Breakout Board gets a revision plus SPI tri-state fix 🔧🔌🔄
