The Great Search: Triple RCA Connectors

This week on The Great Search, this xeet posting caught our eye https://twitter.com/collingall/status/1699140384608133233. It's a massive box of lovely RCA connectors! RCA connectors are ancient but still very popular for analog audio plus NTSC/PAL composite video use. You can get them individually or pre-molded in a row. Common configurations are single-mono audio, stereo audio, or stereo audio + composite, but 'component' analog video (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_video) is not uncommon either. We'll look at RCA connectors and try to find a triple-set with Red, Green, and Blue color-coded plastic. Come as we explore strange new video codecs 🔍🖖🎥

Our last few experiments with playing video+audio on the ESP32-S3 involved converting an MP4 to MJpeg + MP3, where MJpeg is just a bunch of jpegs glued together in a file, and MP3 is what you expect. This works, but we maxed out at 10 or 12 fps on a 480x480 display. You must manage two files, and the FPS must be hardcoded. With this demo https://github.com/moononournation/aviPlayer we are using avi files with Cinepak https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinepak and MP3 encoding - a big throwback to when we played quicktime clips on our Centris 650. The decoding speed is much better, and 30 FPS is easily handled, so the tearing is not as visible. The decoder keeps up with the SD card file, so you can use long files. This makes the board a good option for props and projects where you want to play ~480p video clips with near-instant startup and want to avoid the complexity of running Linux on a Raspberry Pi + monitor + audio amp. The only downside right now is the ffmpeg cinepak encoder is reaaaaallly slooooow. ESP32-S3 Mini TV demo for Star Trek Day 🖖📺🔊

This Mini TV demo https://github.com/moononournation/MiniTV by moononournation is perfectly themed for Star Trek day, playing the TOS and STNG intros at 480x480 12fps MJpeg and 22KHz I2S MP3 audio. We'll try Cinepak next, but this was an easy first start, and it looks and sounds great. There's a little tearing effect due to the low frame rate and the display being single, not double-buffered, but considering this is a $4 microcontroller module running Arduino, it's very impressive! This may be the first time we've seen reasonable size-and-quality video+audio playback! This was our last 'test' for the ESP32-S3 TFT Experimenter board. EYE on NPI - Amphenol All Sensors' ELVH Series Digital and Analog Pressure Sensors

This week's EYE ON NPI is a treasure, and will measure pressure with pleasure...it's the Amphenol All Sensors' ELVH Series Digital and Analog Pressure Sensors (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/all-sensors/elvh-series-digital-and-analog-pressure-sensors). A family of temperature and pressure sensors with a ton of different configurations so you can definitely fit it into your design no matter what interface or usage range. These sensors integrate a process improvement to the sensing element: the CoBeam2 series is a MEMS etched piezo-resistive 'strain gauge diaphragm'. This li'l chunk of silicon creates a Wheatstone bridge where the pressure against the die makes microscopically small changes to the resistances that can be measured on the differential output. That's not surprising: pretty much all absolute or differential pressure sensors come as 4-element Wheatstone bridge configuration (https://www.digikey.com/short/jp83d457) - and these require extra analog circuitry to handle and amplify the small voltage change readings, or a high precision ADC - we've covered 24-bit ADCs for reading bridge sensors on earlier EYE ON NPIs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Xkr7OjHQfU). With the ELVH family of sensors, you can get cleaned-up ratiometric analog output, or ready-to-integrate I2C or SPI - so you can pair these even with fully-digital microcontrollers or microcomputers that have no analog inputs. Plus, since its digitized already, you also get bonus status bits and temperature reads. This full family of pressure and temperature sensors comes in a dizzying set of possible packages and configurations, from SMT J-Lead to through hole DIP or SIP. There's also both absolute and differential input-ports, and barbed, needle or flat ports that can connect with common tubing to measure pressure inside a cavity or ambiently. Of course, temperature will always be an 'on-chip' ambient measurement. For any sort of industrial or medical purpose, you can pick the pressure range from as low as 1inH2O (0.0025 bar) to +10 bar. Finally, both I2C and SPI are available for digital read-out, or analog if you want to maintain compatibility with older sensors. VCNL4020 QT breakout board testing 🔧🔅🤝

This light and proximity sensor using the VCNL4020 https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/vishay-semiconductor-opto-division/VCNL4020-GS08/2813348 was designed a few months ago, but we were dragging our feet on writing the library code as its kind of a tedious process. Now, with our new BFF ChatGPT4, we can crank through a library with minimal typing. Of course, we check each function and #define as it is written - sometimes typos and misunderstandings come through. But overall, it's a much faster and easier process. We wrote a full-coverage library and example sketches in only a couple hours. The Great Search: I2C Infrared Proximity Sensor

The driver that we used ChatGPT 4 to write is for the VCNL4020 https://www.digikey.com/short/dpz897jj, an 'all in one' IR proximity sensor. These sensors work by bouncing bright IR light off a surface and measuring how much returns. The IR light is modulated and relatively resistant to ambient light interaction. One of the first sensors we ever used was the Sharp GP2Y https://www.adafruit.com/product/164. It is famous for its ease of use in the days when cheap microcontrollers provided 5V power and an analog signal that roughly maps with distance is emitted. While you can still get analog distance sensors https://www.digikey.com/short/d21wnm5c, I2C interfacing lets you get data quickly and adjust for lower power usage. INA3221 is a 3-channel DC power monitoring chip 🔌🤖🔍

If you're a fan of our INA219 DC current/voltage monitor breakout https://www.adafruit.com/product/904 , this new prototype will make your heart grow thrice daily. The INA3221 https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/INA3221AIRGVR/3588826 is a triple-channel voltage and current monitor for high side monitoring. Writing an Arduino driver with OpenAI ChatGPT and PDF parsing 🤖🔧📄

One of the big tasks that Ladyada still has to spend a lot of time on is writing Arduino libraries for all our devices and sensors, particularly all the I2C & SPI chips out there! These ICs use register maps and sub-byte addressing to set dozens of configurable knobs and switches, and a good driver lets folks set and get all of the noodly bits. However, there is yet to be a standard format to get that configuration map. Instead, you have to pore over datasheets with long lists of binary tables and bit insets to figure out how to convert that into C or Python code. It is tough. Only a few folks can write an excellent comprehensive library.... but Ladyada can & has! In fact, there are hundreds of Arduino libraries on Adafruit's GitHub https://github.com/orgs/adafruit/repositories, all in the Ladyada 'style,' using Adafruit_BusIO for I2C / SPI register addressing https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_BusIO/ and since ChatGPT 4 was trained on all of it, we can ask it to become a mini-Ladyada to write new drivers. With a PDF parsing plugin, we can even upload the chip's datasheet to extract register names, values, create enum tables, and text for doxygen comments. The amount of time it takes for ChatGPT to write a driver is about the same as it would take Ladyada, and you definitely need to be eagle-eyed to redirect the AI if it starts making mistakes... but it can be done even when Ladyada is tired after a full day of baby-care, or at the same time as pumping https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpbH-sXRNps - plus there's a lot less continuous typing/mousing so her wrists don't ache the next day! Do you use ChatGPT for electrical engineering or coding work? Any suggestions on how to make this even better? This is only our 3rd day using this tool, so we're getting started with how to integrate it into our workflow. HUSB238 is a smart USB PD chip 🔌💡🔋

We wrote a driver this week for the HUSB238 USB PD sink chip https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/05/04/plug-n-play-usb-type-c-dummy-pd/ - this IC is neat in that you can either use jumpers (really, resistor selection) to set the desired PD voltage and current ooooor you can use I2C for dynamic querying and setting. we have a wall adapter that can provide almost-all-PD voltages: 5/9/12/15/20 only 18 is skipped. The HUSB plugs into the USB C cable and, over the CC lines, will negotiate the PD request and commands. For example, we can ask what voltages are available and then iterate over the options here: a multimeter displays the output voltage to prove it works! This can be a handy chip for projects where you need a lot more than 5V @ 2A power: this adapter can give up to 20V at 5A - yes 100W over USB C - and you could buck that down to get a toooon of current at 5V or 12V if that's needed. ESP32-S3 moon phase clock test on 2.1" round TFT display 🌜🌚🖥️

Now that we have somewhat-kinda-sorta working support for RGB TFT displays on the ESP32-S3 - shout out to Jepler, who is doing the hard work over in this PR https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/pull/8351 - its time to test it with wifi too! That's right, the S3 can do wifi and these big displays at once, and CircuitPython is a beautiful framework for it since its so fast to iterate. This code snippet is based on PaintYourDragon's moon clock code here https://learn.adafruit.com/moon-phase-clock-for-adafruit-matrixportal but pared down for testing. We get the geolocation from IP, then look up the moon phase. Currently we just hardcoded it to display today's phase, but the next step is generating ~28 different phase images, and we'll display the one for the current evening as the API informs us. EYE on NPI - TE LEMBAS LTE/GNSS USB Modem

This week's EYE ON NPI will "Speak Friend and Enter" your wireless connectivity toolbox, it's TE's LEMBAS LTE/GNSS USB Modem (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/te-connectivity-amp/lembas-lte-gnss-usb-modem) an easy-to-use full powered cellular and GPS modem designed specifically to be used with single-board Linux computers (SBCs) to add networking and location tracking with a simple plug-and-play USB connection. We bought one and popped it open - not recommended because it will void your warranty - and found inside is a Quectel EC25-AFXD module (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/quectel/EC25AFXGA-128-SGAS/13278280) - an LTE Cat 4 data-only module with high speed uplink and downlink when LTE is available, and GSM/GPRS backward-compatibility for remote areas. Quectel EC25 is a series of LTE Cat 4 modules optimized specially for M2M and IoT applications. Adopting the 3GPP Rel-11 LTE technology, it delivers maximum data rates up to 150 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink. Designed in the compact and in a unified form factor, the EC25 series is compatible with Quectel multi-mode LTE Standard EC21 series/EC20-CE/EG25-G/EG21-G modules and UMTS/HSPA+ UC200A-GL module, which allows for flexible migration among them in design and manufacturing... backward-compatible with existing EDGE and GSM/GPRS networks, ensuring that it can be connected even in remote areas devoid of 4G or 3G coverage. EC25 series supports Qualcomm® IZat™ location technology Gen8C Lite (GPS, GLONASS, BDS, Galileo and QZSS). The integrated GNSS greatly simplifies product design, and provides quicker, more accurate and more dependable positioning. The LEMBAS has a lot of little details that shows the design team focused on a high quality build and removing any obstacles to use. For example, instead of a 'USB stick' style modem that blocks all of the USB ports on your raspi, the modem uses any USB Type C cable - this also allows the user to place the LEMBAS wherever the antenna will get best reception. When we opened it up, we noticed that the board was conformal coated (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/coating-grease-repair/642), so it will handle being exposed to humid air, although please note it's not rated for outdoor use. The SIM card is pre-installed but can be removed / replaced easily if a particular data service is desired. We also thought the status LEDs that appear as part of the TE logo showed a cute designer touch. One handy design decision that makes the LEMBAS easy to get started with: inside is a 2-port USB hub (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TUSB4020BIPHP/5724124) so that, when plugged into USB, it shows up as both the modem interface and a small USB storage key. On that storage are all the files you need to run to install the modem interface on an Arm32 or Arm64 computer like the Raspberry Pi. This definitely solves the "to get on the internet I have to install my wireless drivers but I can't get onto the internet because I haven't installed my wireless drivers" problem. And of course, there's a GNSS inside as well, which makes this perfect for asset tracking or geo-locating projects where you need to know where the code is running from. It's ready to go in an instant and with native Linux support for cellular modems, you don't need to do any AT command noodling - use Python or node.js or whatever language your application is and open secure sockets like normal. If you've got a hankerin' for a piece of Elvish-quality technology that will let you communicate anywhere in the world, even on the top of Mt. IPS TFT displays, and 3.5" floppy drives are like surf-n-turf: at no point did a lobster or cow ever meet each other before being plated at a restaurant, yet they are a tasty combination. We are testing a 4" 720x720 square display with a capacitive touch overlay using our Espressif ESP32-S3 TFT experimenter board. Conveyor belt Sushi! Testing out a 4.6" diagonal bar TFT display 🍣 📏 🖥

We got the round displays working on our ESP32-S3 RGB display driver, so now we're moving on to the bar displays! These are longer than most rectangular displays and are kind of fun if you want to, say, animate a sushi conveyor belt. We're having a bit of flakiness from this one; the hsync and vsync or pclk settings given to us by the factory aren't quite right because you can see the display shift up and down. There's also a flickering effect: from us using single-buffer display mode where we draw the next frame on top of the current one while it is displayed. The way to get buttery-smooth animations here is to double-buffer at a cost of twice the RAM requirement. More belt sushi! Testing a skinnier 960x240 bar display 🍣 🍣 🍱

Much like our 4.6" display we just tested, this 3.7" display is a looooong and thin boi. It has 960x240 pixels and a 40-pin RGB TTL interface. We're testing it out by drawing a cute sushi animation on it - and we see that while we still get the 'not double buffering' flicker, we don't see the image shift around like the 4.6" - which means maybe we've got more-stable values for the hsync/vsync. MJPEGs are a great way to play small animations on TFTs 🎞️ 🖥️ 🔄

With our ESP32-S3 TFT experimenter board, we're now able to use the Arduino_GFX https://github.com/moononournation/Arduino_GFX library by moononournation which has native RGB TFT support and excellent example code. This example is playing MJPEG files, a simple animation format https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_JPEG with just JPEGs glued together. We wired up a MicroSD card over SPI for quick file storage and retrieval, or 1-bit MMC works, too. files are converted with ffmpeg: 'ffmpeg -i "wash.mp4" -vf "fps=10,vflip,hflip,scale=-1:480:flags=lanczos,crop=480:480" -pix_fmt yuvj420p -q:v 9 wash.mjpeg', natch! And then they play, about 9fps is the rate we're getting for 480x480 pixels. This week's EYE ON NPI will make your sensors soft and luxurious thanks to the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/zssc3241-sensor-signal-conditioning-ic) - which, like a fancy bottle of hair conditioner, will de-tangle any frustrations you have with using resistive sensors that require amplification and filtering. Many "sensors" that engineers use to measure temperature, pressure, force, light, etc, are actually implemented as resistive sensors. For example, take your common CdS cell (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/photo-detectors-cds-cells/540) also known as an LDR - Light Dependant Resistor. The CdS material has an interesting property that as light shines on it, the resistance decreases. Another common sensor is the PT100 or PT1000 temperature sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/temperature-sensors/rtd-resistance-temperature-detector/535) those are known as RTD - Resistance Temperature Detector - and have a tiny sliver of platinum that has a near-linear increase in resistance as temperature increases (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/honeywell-sensing-and-productivity-solutions/HEL-705-U-0-24-00/3073062). A third example is the classic strain gauge, made of a thin plate of patterned metallic material that very slightly changes resistance as it is deformed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strain_gauge). That kind of rough estimation works great for beginners or simple light sensing, but will not cut it when you have to use a strain gauge at the supermarket to measure pounds of veggies: you want it to be very precise, at least within 1% or better! And if you're using a temperature measurement for a scientific process, you may need to get within 1 degree C or better. You can usually improve the quality slightly by having a 1% or 0.1% precision resistor, adding an op-amp gain stage, upgrading your ADC from 8 or 10 bit to 16 or 24 bits - however you will still need to adjust calibration from sensor-to-sensor as well as account for temperature and/or humidity. That's where the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q1w59d7c) comes in! It's designed specifically to make any resistive sensor easy to wire up and interface with SPI, I2C or 1-Wire. You can use Wheatstone half-bridge, full-bridge or divider configuration so it's good for strain gauges or RTDs. There's even analog output! The ZSSC3241 provides measurement value readouts and programming capabilities via an I2C, SPI, or one-wire interface (OWI). Three different operation modes allow optimal development of digital, digital-analog, and analog-output smart sensor modules including wake-up on request, continuous-on/fast-response, and automatic/cyclic sensor measurement operations. Absolute and ratiometric voltage, current-loop, or interrupt analog outputs are supported by the ZSSC3241. The analog output options and digital interface options (for calibration and/or a digital application interface) can be combined. Some great stuff that is included in this chip includes dual PGA stages with up to 300x and 1.8x gain, mV offset shift correction, 12 to 24 bit adjustable ADC resolution - lower resolutions will be faster, adjustable sensor bias current, adjustable temperature compensation, oversampling and averaging, error fault reporting, NVM storage for calibration details, interrupt output on value change, and configurable cyclic measurements with sleep mode (https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/zssc3241-datasheet?r=25417946) - as well as many other configurations that you can check out in the datasheet. While there are many ADCs that one can use to read resistive bridge, we've never seen one with so many knobs for getting the exact right data out without needing a lot of extra massaging....and the pricing is great considering how much more you get than a normal off-the-shelf ADC chip. Reviving an ancient 3.5" capacitive touch display breakout 🔍🔧📟

Blimey! We found a bin of these 3.5" 480x320 capacitive touch displays while clearing out some space in the adafruit factory; we totally forgot about them... at the time, we were having some difficulty with getting them working consistently, but we were also not sure if we remember what was up. We will assume they are OK and design a version of our 3.5" TFT breakout https://www.adafruit.com/product/2050 but with support for the captouch chip, which is an FT5336. So far, it mostly works. The FT5336 can report up to 5 touches, and we got that data out. The HX8357D is a bit long in the tooth, but it works over SPI, and we've got running drivers, so folks could still use this display! EYE ON NPI - Nexperia Battery Life Booster ICs

This week's EYE ON NPI is going to give you life, we're looking at Nexperia's Battery Life Booster ICs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics), an interesting solution for dealing with common coin cell batteries as an inexpensive power supply for your small electronic products. The marketing copy for this chip series is pretty eye-catching, with copy that they are "designed to extend the life of a typical lithium coin cell battery by up to an order of magnitude (10x) while also increasing its peak output current capability by up to 25x" (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics) Quite a claim! So let's take a look at what this chip can really do, and why we need it to help with our coin battery-powered designs. Primary Lithium LiMnO2 coin batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/battery-products/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/lithium-manganese-dioxide/90) are hard to beat when you want ultra-dense, low-cost power that is very small. They are the smallest form factor of user-serviceable battery. And the power density of coins - plus their flat shape - makes them great for wearable devices, medical sensors or hearing aids, wireless nodes, anything that is smaller than a finger. With a nominal voltage of 3VDC, and 280 Wh/kg density, they are more dense than a AA alkaline. LiSOCl2 batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/battery-products/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/lithium-thionyl-chloride/90?s=N4IgjCBcoCxgTFUBjKAzAhgGwM4FMAaEAeygG0QBmANgFZKEQBdIgBwBcoQBldgJwCWAOwDmIAL6SgA) are even more dense, with 3.6V nominal and 500 Wh/kg - twice the density of LiMnO2 or Alkaline. Both are non-rechargeable batteries, and while fairly inexpensive when bought in bulk, they can add up in cost when buying from a grocery store, so making sure that they last a long time is essential for a good customer experience. The Energizer Lithium Coin Handbook and Application Manual (https://data.energizer.com/pdfs/lithiumcoin_appman.pdf) is chock full of good advice for folks who want to use a CR2032 or similar coin battery to power their products. It's written with engineers in mind, so a lot of the document covers how the nominal voltage and current, 3V and 240mAh, are deeply affected by shelf life, internal resistance, temperature, and pulse effects. The biggest downside you will see on coin batteries is their relatively high internal resistance - IR. Whereas alkaline and LiPoly batteries have internal resistance well below 1 ohm, the IR of a CR2032 is 9 ohms. So say you want to draw 100mA from a CR2032, even if just for a few millisecs - that 0.1 A turns into a .9V drop across the IR which means what you thought was a 3V power supply is now 2V - too low for your microcontroller or radio to run. Since the power lost across the IR is 2*I*R and R is fixed, it's doubly important that you keep that I low, so that you can minimize IR loss and use as much of that 700mWh stored energy. In our 100mA example, 30% of the battery energy is lost to resistor heat dissipation! That's where Nexperia's Battery Life Booster ICs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics) come in. They are designed to be used with products that don't need continuous battery drain, that is they have a very low duty cycle where the user presses a button a few times a day or maybe the sensor node transmits only once a minute. During that short transmit or usage cycle, a radio or LCD display may need up to 200mA but its for a very small amount of time and the voltage needs to be stable. The NBM family of chips do this by slowly sipping a small amount of current from the battery, keeping that I low so that the 2*I*R power loss is minimized, then use that constant current to boost a voltage onto a large storage capacitor. The capacitor is chosen to have high capacitance and high voltage for a large total Joule storage capacity.
