This week's EYE ON NPI is so hot, yet so cool: it's the BeagleV-Fire from BeagleBoard.org (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/beagleboard/beaglev-fire) featuring the Microchip PolarFire MPFS025T-FCVG484E (https://www.digikey.com/short/ddw7fmww), a powerful Processor+FPGA combo SoC that has 4x 64-bit RV64GC Application cores, as well as a 23K logic element FPGA. The BeagleV-Fire outfits this chip with a tidy number of wired up peripherals so that you can quickly get started with complex computational requirements without having to spin up a custom PCB. Historically, the BeagleBoard folks have used ARM-core chips: their famous BeagleBone Black (https://www.beagleboard.org/boards/beaglebone-black) contained a TI-built ARM Cortex A8. But recently they've been experimenting more with RISC-V. RISC-V is an 'Open ISA' - which means that you get a well defined, high speed core, that adheres the the RISC-V ISA Specifications (https://riscv.org/technical/specifications/) and use implementations thereof, without having to pay ARM a licensing fee. And recently ARM has looked to raise those fees (https://www.xda-developers.com/arm-increasing-royalty-fees/) - which has a lot more chip makers looking seriously at RISC-V as an alternative core. Now, to be honest, RISC-V is not as mature as ARM, and you're not going to have as much language and peripheral support for it. But...it's hard to argue with free! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_innovation) We've seen RISC-V show up in two spots: mostly in smaller, low-power microcontroller cores like the ESP-C6 (https://www.espressif.com/en/products/socs/esp32-c6), but more recently, in larger boards like this one. One nice thing about having the RISC-V cores be powerful enough to run protected software like Linux is that you don't have to worry as much about compiler or learning the peripheral management because you can just run Python or use the Kernel Ioctl interfaces for hardware - the hard work has been done for you! And for this board you get a ready-to-boot Ubuntu installation. Which is awesome because sometimes you get really odd distro's for SBCs that end up eating all your time and energy to get them into a modern state. Now that you have Linux running, you can use the FPGA to make custom hardware interfaces. To do that you'll need to use Libero (https://www.microchip.com/en-us/products/fpgas-and-plds/fpga-and-soc-design-tools/fpga/libero-software-later-versions) as an FPGA IDE, and use the MAC address of the BeagleV for the floating license. But it does look like you can run libero natively on the BeagleV - there's apparently 'gateware' examples that will be published, for the M.2, SYZYGY, MIPI-CSI and Cape/GPIO hardware interface. So those design blocks can be built upon or tweaked to fit your end-needs. Our cute 2.1" round 480x480 TFT display (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5792) has a CST826 capacitive touchscreen overlay - different than the other screens that all have Focaltech FT6336U or similar. Thanks to MakerMelissa we now have support in both Arduino (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CST8XX_Library) and CircuitPython (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_CST8XX)! We also got a version of our 4" 720x720 display (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5793) with capacitive touch. Unfortunately this one doesn't have the same 'integrated' style where the CTP pads go through the 40-pin connector, bot rather they're on a separate 6-pin 0.5mm pitch tail. Still, it's worth the effort, so we'll make a lil breakout for the touch connector so you can plug it into the QT port. We saw this call for help over on X, asking for a DigiKey part number for "graphite based thermal pads" (https://twitter.com/ghost_motley/status/1709160119852765465) . These are used to cool down chips on CPUs or GPUs when performing heavy computation. Normally folks use thermal paste but there's also thermal pads that can be used. These are less messy and are more forgiving of gaps or rough spots between the chip and heatsink. One thing to watch for is a lot of 'marketing heavy' modding parts don't publish specs! So while we were not able to find an exact match for 'KryoSheet' - because they purposefully don't say what the thermal resistivity is, we did find some good matches on DigiKey if you want to use graphite thermal pads in your next product. This week's EYE ON NPI is PIC GmbH's LP Series Reed Switch Chains (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/pic/lp-series-reed-switch-chains), a range of a new kind of liquid level sensor. Not surprisingly, this sensor uses a chain of reed switches and a magnetic float to detect the liquid level in a bucket or tank - we've never heard of this kind of sensor, so we picked one up to check it out! Using a single reed switch for determining liquid level is not new - it's a common way to have a isolatable sensor for food-safe or caustic fluids. Compared to some other liquid level sensors like eTape (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/464/8558263) which needs to be 'squeezed' by the liquid to give a continuous resistive reading, or sonar (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/maxbotix-inc/MB7092-100/7896780) which needs to be able to bounce air off, or ToF sensors (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/3967/17039169) which can be affected by surface reflectivity/absorption, a reed relay is fully electrically and mechanically isolated. The whole thing can be covered in inert materials and easily cleaned or sanitized. For more details on selecting fluid level sensors check out this DigiKey article (https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/selecting-a-fluid-level-sensor-what-you-need-to-know) The PIC LP Series Reed Switch Chain is made of a thick PCB that is routed down the middle and has tightly packed reed switches (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reed_switch) soldered one after the other with 1K resistors between each one. A each reed switch closes, the two contacts will measure a resistance that contains all the 'lower' 1K resistors in series. So, say if the first reed switch is triggered the resistance will be 0 ohms, if the next reed is closed the resistance is 1K ohms, all the way up to (n-1)*1K ohms where n is the number of reed switches installed. In order to have the reed switches activate with the liquid level, you'll also need a donut/toroid-shaped magnet float (https://www.pic-gmbh.com/en/level-sensors) which is stocked over at PIC or a generic one can be used if you need particular material. The PCB comes bare and you'll need to put it in a tube that matches your material handling requirements. Also, if you need a longer chain, you can abut them end-to-end and solder them - some mechanical stabilization may also be required. Even though this is designed for liquid float sensing, it could also be adapted to be used as a sliding-platform locator: just watch out that you don't exceed the switch activation lifetime limit - it's a few million but these will be hard to replace if they get damaged. Another nifty side-effect of using reed switches is that they can withstand higher voltages, and since they are not powered, can be wired directly into circuitry that is not ground-referenced and don't care about noise, EMI, static or other common annoyances of industrial automation. There's also some other cool items from PIC to check out at DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/pic-gmbh), such as SMT reed switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/pic-gmbh/PMC-1001TS1015/9687557) which we didn't know existed, and individual reed floats (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/pic/level-sensors) if you don't need continuous level detection. If you want to have a fully mechanically isolated level or position detector that is simple, inexpensive and doesn't require external power, this could work very nicely! This week's Great Search is on clicky dome switches! We saw a thread on X (https://twitter.com/RueNahcMohr/status/1716162430265602509) showing off the Snaptron (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/snaptron) starter kit - you can pick up a sample box kit for free from (https://www.snaptron.com/free-samples/sample-box/) if you want to try these too. We first saw these on the Pocket CHIP (https://shop.pocketchip.co/collections/frontpage/products/pocket-c-h-i-p-new) as a low cost way to create a key array. One new type we saw is the BL series (https://www.snaptron.com/products/standard-domes/bl-series/) which allows having an LED behind the dome - you'll need a reverse mount LED so it doesn't get crushed. Autumn Lights Festival in Oakland, CA is a long-running and beloved Oakland tradition. It takes place at the Gardens at Lake Merritt every October. This event is a fundraiser for the garden, which is a peaceful sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, right on the shore of the lake. Around 100 LED light artists bring their creations out to Autumn Lights every year. This year, we caught up with Yvette Schindler, who created a giant Connect 4 game using laser-etched acrylic, NeoPixels and arcade buttons. It's a fully functioning game where players can face off with each other by standing on either side of the board and pressing buttons to drop a "piece" wherever they'd like. This was a really popular installation -- people were lined up to play all night long. The game also functions as an art piece, with gorgeous colorful animations that run while no one is playing. It is one of the most beautiful and intuitively interactive use of pixels and Arduino we've seen. This week's EYE ON NPI will have you doing cartwheels and somersaults, it's the E-Switch RT3301 Series Reverse Tactile Switch (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/e-switch/rt3301-reverse-tactile-switch), a spin on the common 6x6 tactile switch, with reverse mounting for easy assembly and clean design. E-Switch manufactures thousands of different tactile switches that are stocked at DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/tactile-switches/197?s=N4IgjCBcoLQdIDGUBmBDANgZwKYBoQB7KAbXABYIBdAXzqA) of various sizes, actuator heights, and mounting styles. In addition to the classic 6x6mm tactile switch, (https://www.digikey.com/short/z0m4fjpp) there's also the SMT 6mm tactile (https://www.digikey.com/short/m7440d0f) that can be pick-and-placed. These buttons have built-in round actuators but they're intended to be used with moulded buttons that have a nub to do the actual pressing: the actuator is just for height. Which explains how the through-hole reverse mount 6mm tactile switch is expected to work (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/e-switch/RT1105AF260Q/15221150) - you're going to definitely need an actuator button since otherwise your fingers will bump into the solder pads! The most curious of these is the reverse-mount SMT tactile switch, which was recently featured by DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/e-switch/rt3301-reverse-tactile-switch) in their new products section...and with great timing because just a few weeks ago we published a cool Lisp-powered badge project with a built-in keyboard on the blog (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/10/10/the-lisp-badge-le-lisp-basdgelife-technoblogy/). To make the key labels nice and large, the author used similar switches with an angled layout for tight packing. The result is a nice clean look on the front, without needing to purchase separate key caps. We'll note that the RT3301's actuator is not as long, so using it with a half-thickness board will get buttons that are flush with the PCB surface. That means it's best for use with separate key caps or overlay...but we're also pretty sure that E-Switch will come out with another version that has longer actuator - just like they have a variety of actuator lengths on the non-reverse 6mm tactile switches. This weeks EYE ON NPI is a real throwback for us, it's the Orion Fans' ML2010 Mini-lab (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/o/orion-fans/ml2010-mini-lab), a portable engineering toolkit built into a suitcase for easy transport. This Mini-lab reminds us of the MIT Nerd-Kit used in digital and and analog design classes that require construction of circuit labs (http://web.mit.edu/6.111/www/project-photos/s98-projects-photos/s98projects.html). These suitcases were durable ...and super heavy! Thankfully we did not have to carry them back and forth to home each day - there were lockers in the lab. Many a digital-lab student wished we could keep the kits after finishing the course but sadly nerd-kits were not for sale - and we shudder to think what fate would befall us if we neglected to return them. Which is why this NPI caught my eye...finally I can have my very own nerd-kit thanks to Orion Fans and Knight Electronic Products. This silver suitcase contains many common analog and digital-logic tools to help prototype projects on a breadboard: Breadboard Power supplies Function generator stimulus Sweep ramp generator stimulus Pulse generator stimulus Protoboard I/O ports Switches Indicators Heavy-duty carrying case The solderless breadboarding area is made of three 630-point solderless breadboards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/solderless-breadboards/638), so large circuits with many breakout and dev board PCBs can be laid out. There's also a separate perf-board area (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/prototype-boards-perforated/636?s=N4IgTCBcDaIA4FMBOAzABAIwPYEMkBMQBdAXyA) for higher-frequency work that could be affected by the breadboard capacitance, or when you want more mechanical stability. The perf-board snaps out when your project is done. The power supplies are where analog hackers are going to be happy, particularly folks who are designing exotic motor/power systems or audio/synthesizers: it has both +5, -5, +12, and -12V at 1 Amp output split supplies, and isolated-ground +18 and -18V at 1 Amp outputs, all with 0.1% line/load regulation and short circuit protection. For AC supply design - rare to find, so if you need it this will be a blessing - there's 15VAC center tapped that can supply 500mA. The power supplies are fused, and controlled by a large on/off rocker. Another great feature for analog hackers: there's also a full-featured function generator (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/function-generators/630), with sine/square/triangle out - up to 18Vpp and +-10V DC offset with selectable decade ranges from 1Hz to 1MHz, and low distortion under 100KHz. There's inputs for FM, AM and sweep modulation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modulation), for low-frequency RF experimentation. There's also a plethora of connectors and switches so you don't have to figure out how to panel mount connectors or work out mechanical stabilization. For toggle switches, there are 2x SPDT momentary toggles, 2 x SPDT toggles, and 8x logic level toggle switches. D-Sub connectors also: DE-9 and DE-25 in plug and socket format. For connecting to other test equipment, 3x BNCs. And for input/output, 8x red LEDs, a 1K pot, a 100K pot, and an 8 ohm 1/4 W speaker. The Orion Fans' Mini-lab toolkit (https://www.digikey.com/short/bdhcv3pw) would make a great resource at a lab, workshop or classroom. It's hefty and durable but that also means it'll last a long time. It's an excellent step up from just cobbling together parts that can come loose, and you can put it away safely between hacking sessions without the risk of someone 'borrowing' a part! I had the chance to wander through a field of LED flowers that pulse and glow and whisper sounds to each other at the Autumn Lights Festival in Oakland, CA in October of 2023. This was a beautiful installation by Patrick Ball that uses ESP32 microcontrollers and the FastLED Arduino library to create an immersive experience of light and sound.
