The Great Search: Jellybean 10uF Ceramic Capacitors
We go through literally millions of our 'jellybean' 10uF caps - more specifically 10uF 16V 0805 X5R 10% ceramic capacitors. There can be dozens on every board we make, they're great for an extra bulk capacitor, alongside your 1uF or 0.1uF higher-frequency friends. They're also a ton smaller than electrolytic caps (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/02/09/the-great-search-electrolytic-capacitors-thegreatsearch-digikey-adafruit-digikey-adafruit/)! We'll look for some options you can use, my recommended voltage ratings and package sizes, what 'X5R' and 'Y5V' means, and when you should NOT use MLCCs! EYE on NPI - CUI Devices' Illuminated Buzzers
Honk! Honk! This week's EYE ON NPI is jazzy, be-dazzly, and sure-to-get-your-attention-y: it's CUI Devices' Illuminated Buzzers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cui-devices/illuminated-buzzers), a set of incredibly loud audio indicators that also have built-in LEDs that light up! What a great way to quickly turn an existing design into an accessible, multi-sensory alarm system without having to redesign the enclosure or PCB. These are very loud buzzers, good for industrial equipment - with a range of 83 to 100 dB, loud enough to alert in an office or factory. The LEDs are also nice and bright, for good indoor visibility. There are three sizes/shapes available. The smallest is the CLI-1375 PCB-mount design (https://www.digikey.com/short/m4zc8d3z) with 13mm diameter body, which is the same shape as many PC-pin buzzers. When powered with 6 to 15V it emits a piercing 83 dB, 4 KHz square wave and the inner LEDs light up. You can get 4 different shades of translucent plastic: red, yellow, green and blue. Note you aren't expected to provide a square wave: there's an internal wave generator. There's two versions for the CLI-1375 buzzer, one has a steady tone and LED light, the other has 1 Hz-ish modulation for both the LEDs and beep. The CLI-3224 medium size is 32mm diameter (https://www.digikey.com/short/1zwrvdf1) is a nice panel mount version with 8 SMT LEDs, four color options, and a shape that is evocative of arcade buttons. This version has spade connectors for power, and can be powered from 3 to 15 VDC. It will emit a 95 dB 3 KHz tone at the 12V rated power. Unlike the PCB-mount design, this one doesn't have a 'pulsing' version. Finally, the CLI-3623 large size is 36mm diameter (https://www.digikey.com/short/4tnpp4fz) and is also panel mount, but with a flatter top. It also has 8 SMT LEDs, and four colors. Like the CLI-3224, 3-15VDC power is provided via spade lugs. Volume is also 95 dB at 12VDC, the tone frequency is 3.5KHz. All 16 versions of 4 types, and 4 colors of CUI Devices' Illuminated Buzzers (https://www.digikey.com/short/b790m8vw) are in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment. So if you order today, DigiKey will get the alarm to get your order out the door ASAP, and you can get beepy and blinky instantly with any configuration you desire by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: Wire Wrap Wire
Thin 30 AWG 'wire wrap' wire can be used to solder to fine pitch pins and parts for repairs or debugging. We always recommend every engineer have a roll on hand - even though it is not good for use with a breadboard, it's essential for repairing or hacking PCBs. Originally these were used for point-to-point circuit creation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_wrap) with a wire-wrapping tool (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jonard-tools/WSU-30M/5986) - before the cost of PCBs plummeted (https://www.digikey.com/en/resources/dkred). Sometimes called Kynar wire, this is stocked at DigiKey - you might think "OK why is this a Great Search when you can just type wire wrap into the search box?" Well, watch to learn about a few options you may not have known about! See the chosen part on DigiKey https://www.digikey.com/short/bjwtnph7 Don't forget, #DigiWish is happening right now on social media (https://twitter.com/digikey/status/1731349619836133553) Make sure to pick out something in stock from the DigiKey catalog and post up up every day - one person is selected each day to get their wish as a gift!

EYE on NPI - Microchip MCP3421 18-bit, 240 SPS, single-channel ADC
This week's EYE ON NPI is a compact and capable analog-to-digital converter, it's the Microchip MCP3421 18-bit, 240 SPS, single-channel ADC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/microchip-technology/mcp3421-analog-to-digital-converter). This SOT-23-6 part is simple, inexpensive, and easy to use with an I2C interface that can run up to a 3.4MHz clock rate. Being able to power it from 2.7V to 5V makes it an easy-to-integrate component whenever you need an ADC that has differential inputs, adjustable gain, and a built in precision/low-drift reference voltage. One of the trade-offs with getting 18-bit precision is that the ADC is not going to be very fast: you can configure the chip to do a faster 12-bit conversion at 240 SPS, but at 18-bits, it slows down to 3.5 SPS. That's because the way a sigma-delta ADC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta-sigma_modulation) works, it 'guesses' the analog voltage and uses a comparator to determine whether the input is higher or lower. Each 'guess' takes an extra step, and thus halves the throughput, so 12-bit is 240 SPS, and 14-bit is 1/4 (2-bit) slower, 60 SPS. Ditto 16-bit is 1/4 slower, 15 SPS, and finally 18-bit is 3.75 SPS. However, sigma-delta ADCs are inexpensive, so as long as you don't need high speeds there's no reason to spec a faster and more expensive part! The MCP3421 is already set up for differential inputs, which means that you can read positive or negative differences between the two inputs, as long as both signals are between 0 and 2.048V. This means it's not going to be great for reading stuff like potentiometers, where you have a single-end reading referenced to ground, and you want to read the full range from 0 to Vcc. It is great, however, for reading sensors like strain gauges, pressure sensors, or thermocouples. The I2C interface for the MCP3421 is simple and well documented: there's a command byte that can be written directly to set continuous or one-shot, gain from 1x to 8x and the ADC bit depth. Then, the current data can be read directly, with the status/'command' byte following. Since the ADC is differential, note that the data will come out as binary 1's complement for easy casting to a signed 16 or 24 bit variable. Since there's no address selection pin, you can determine which I2C the device responds to by purchasing a part code variant. For example, A0 is address 0x68, A1 is 0x69, etc. We used ChatGPT to quickly put together an Arduino-compatible library (https://chat.openai.com/share/76252459-50e5-4cd2-8edf-08bf3cc1c438) in about an hour and it pretty much worked right out of the box minus a few typos. The final, tested library code is available here (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_MCP3421). We also spun up a quick prototype PCB for the MCP3421 (https://twitter.com/adafruit/status/1650909789591945248) and it works very nicely, with a terminal block for the differential input, and Stemma QT ports to quickly plug into a variety of dev boards. If you're on the look-out for a well-designed high precision ADC to integrate into your next design, the Microchip MCP3421 18-bit, 240 SPS, single-channel ADC (https://www.digikey.com/short/5htnqnw8) is an easy win. And, best of all, it's in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digikey. Order an MCP3421 today (https://www.digikey.com/short/5htnqnw8) and you'll be convertin' by tomorrow afternoon!

The Great Search: Industrial MicroSD Cards
This week we're looking for a high-reliability micro SD card - you can get inexpensive SD cards for basic device usage anywhere, but if you need one that can handle many years of 24/7 data writes, or for use in industrial temperature ranges, it's best to get a card that has a datasheet and usage guarantees! Along the way we'll find some interesting options such as power-loss-protection, and how to decode the different 'classes' of SD cards available. See the chosen part on DigiKey https://www.digikey.com/short/40n5j275 Don't forget, #DigiWish is happening right now on social media (https://twitter.com/digikey/status/1731349619836133553) Make sure to pick out something in stock from the DigiKey catalog and post up up every day - one person is selected each day to get their wish as a gift!

EYE on NPI - Analog Devices' TMC5240 Stepper Motor Controller and Driver IC
This week's EYE ON NPI has us pitter-pattering on our tippy-toes, it's the newest and bestest stepper motor driver we've seen, the Analog Devices' TMC5240 Stepper Motor Controller and Driver IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/rt0zpt4v) from the Trinamic division at ADI! Trinamic is famous for their stepper motor driver chips, which we see often in 3D printers (https://www.analog.com/en/design-center/evaluation-hardware-and-software/evaluation-boards-kits/trams.html), XY gantries and other robots that need fast motion control. Stepper motors are commonly used when we need continuous rotation for linear movement through a rack and pinion. We've got huge steppers in our pick and place machine, and most makers are going to be familiar with them in CNC devices like laser cutters, 3D printers or milling machines (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bantam-tools/desktop-pcb-milling-machine) - servos will be controlling the X, Y and Z axes as well as any extruder. And if you have one of these devices you know they can be loud and slow: in order to get good precision from a stepper we need to micro-step, so that instead of a standard 200 steps per rotation, we get 16*200 or 256*200 (https://www.analog.com/en/products/landing-pages/001/optimizing-stepper-motors-microstepping.html). Microstepping gets us that beautiful precision, but adds a ton of noise because now there's a PWM signal that is vibrating the motor (https://www.analog.com/en/products/landing-pages/001/secret-silent-stepper-motor-control.html). That's where Trinamic's StealthChop2 secret sauce comes in: The StealthChop chopper modulates the current based on the PWM duty cycle, resulting in a perfect current sinewave with straight crossing of the zero-current level. The constant PWM frequency minimizes current ripple and, by extension, any Eddy current that may be found in the stator, reducing power loss, and increasing efficiency. The StealthChop chopper also removes variations of the chopper frequency, or frequency jitter, so that only the commanded variations remain. Thus, at a 50% PWM duty cycle, the current is actually zero. The result of all this is silent stepper motor operation at a standstill and at low to moderate speeds. We've covered Trinamic's TMC2226 stepper driver before on EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/06/18/eye-on-npi-tmc2226-sa-ultra-silent-stepper-motor-driver-eyeonnpi-digikey-adafruit-digikey-adafruit-trinamic_mc/) and that chip mimic'd the common configuration for stepper motor drivers: set the microsteps with GPIO and then use a DIRection and STEP pin. That makes it easy for integration with any hardware, you just need some GPIO pins, but it means that you have to do the motion control yourself. And, once you have 2 or 3 motors, motion control code can get really complicated: you have to tune and configure ramp ups from idle to fast run, and back down so there isn't any jerky motion. What's really cool is that the TMC5240 has built-in motion-control! You set some configurations and then can tell it what position or velocity to achieve, and the microstepping is done for you. It even handles encoder reading, mechanical stall detection, and end-stop switch interrupts for you so you don't slam into the side of the machine by accident. To do this, the TMC5240 has a full register and command set, that can be controlled with SPI or UART - with UART there is node addressing required, but perhaps this is easier to integrate with low-pin microcomputers. For both, commands are sent for configuring everything from stall current, to motion control, to individual steps to temperature reads. Speaking of which: the TMC5240 come in two packages: QFN and TSSOP. TSSOP has a big thermal pad at the bottom for better dissipation, QFN is smaller. With either, use plenty of vias, a 4-layer design with dedicated 2 oz copper ground planes to keep the motor driver cool: these can handle 5-36V at up to 2A per leg, so they are throwing a lot of current around. You can pick up bare TMC5240 chips (https://www.digikey.com/short/vhvtnjbw), basic breakout boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/TMC5240-BOB/21292888) and eval boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/TMC5240-EVAL/17878664). Since you have to use the SPI/UART protocol to communicate, we recommend checkout out the pyTrinamic library (https://github.com/trinamic/PyTrinamic) which has added support to the TMC5240 (https://github.com/trinamic/PyTrinamic/blob/master/pytrinamic/ic/TMC5240.py) so you can hit the ground running / stepping. Order up some of these silent stepper drivers today and you'll get them in hand by tomorrow afternoon, you'll save tons of time on your next robotic or mechatronic project thanks to the tons of built-in capabilities on the TMC5240!

EYE on NPI - Richtek RT9120S Class-D Audio Amplifier with DRC Control
This week's EYE ON NPI is in a class of its own, it's Richtek's RT9120S Series Class-D Audio Amplifier with DRC Control,(https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/richtek/rt9120s-class-d-audio-amplifier) a powerful amplifier with a wide operating voltage range, high efficiency, high wattage and many supported input formats We love I2S audio amplifiers here, they're a huge step up from PWM + analog amplifiers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation) in that you will get much higher audio quality due to having true analog output and the DAC being tuned for 16, 24 or 32-bit audio. Most simple PWM is maybe 8 or 10 bits! As long as your microcontroller or microcomputer has I2S output support, you can use 3 or 4 pins to generate a bitstream of audio. For example, our Stereo Bonnet (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/3346/6573323) adds two single-channel I2S amplifiers to the Raspberry Pi so that it can drive 3 Watt speakers. But what if you need more MOAR power? This is where this I2S amp will shine: it can handle up to 30W per channel, stereo, and best of all it does not require an MCLK input signal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%C2%B2S) so it will work great on Raspberry Pi computers of any size - although of course it will work on other microcontrollers and microcomputers as well. Let's take a look and some of the features we like in this chip. First thing to note is that there are a few options in the RT9120 family (https://www.richtek.com/~/media/AN%20PDF/SG017_2022.pdf): the RT9120 is the original, the RT9120S is an upgrade - it can now support 30W instead of 20W thanks to an RDS(on) as low as 90 mΩ and has 94% efficiency over 92%. It does seem to be pin compatible, so if you're using the non-S version this ought to be pin-compatible for an upgrade. This amp is Class D, which means if you're used to class AB amps that require massive heat-sinking, you'll be please to know you can likely get away without requiring a heat-sink - although you'll probably want a big back ground plane and 2 oz copper to help dissipate via the thermal-package ground pad. The trade off is you will need some passive components on the output of the amplifier, because it generates a high frequency - up to 1.5MHz - PWM signal that needs to be filtered down to 10-20KHz. It looks like this amp can use simple ferrite bead + capacitor outputs, but for the best EMI filtering and sound, a 10uH + 0.47uF capacitor is needed for each 'leg' of output. As this is a powerful amp, and since people will want to play it loud, and you'll want to avoid nasty clipping, the RT9120 also features Dynamic Range Compression (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range_compression) which will slowly turn down the gain as the signal gets louder, so that you don't get square wave distortion. Lastly, you will need to control the chip over I2C, it isn't free-running. However, this means you can enable filters, change the Class D frequency, adjust the gain digitally instead of reducing the signal depth, and get an error output report to know if there's a short or open on the speakers, or missing I2S signal lines. However, if you're using a Linux-based system there's already a Richtek-authored kernel driver you can use.(https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/sound/soc/codecs/rt9120.c) Sounds good? I think so! And the fact that the Richtek RT9120S Series Class-D Audio Amplifier with DRC Control is in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment at a very nice price (https://www.digikey.com/short/wqddcrqj) is music to my ears. You can also pick up an eval board for a very reasonable price (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/richtek-usa-inc/EVB-RT9120SGQV/19914630) which will get you started quickly, particularly if you need to implement an I2C driver. Order today and DigiKey will ship your order instantly, you will be able to start adding booming quality sound to your design by tomorrow afternoon.
