EYE on NPI - Analog Devices Inc MAXREFDES178 and MAX78000

This week's EYE ON NPI is a cool cubic camera - it's the Analog Devices Inc. (nee Maxim Integrated) MAXREFDES178 (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj), an all-in-one vision eval board for the MAX78000 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX78000EXG/13155097). The MAX78000 is a specifically customized ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller that has a Convolution Neural Network sub-circuit. This means that it's really good at doing the kind of mathematical calculations required to do vision or audio-based machine learning inferences without the need for a heavy-duty processor like in a Single Board Computer or Internet co-processing. This makes it great for stand-alone smart camera applications - which is why the MAXREFDES178 (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj) is an excellent eval board that might even be able to be integrated in your final design. The MAXREFDES178 camera kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj) comes as a small hackable cube with two MAX78000s - one for video and one for audio processing. A 1.5" 240x240 resolution TFT with capacitive touchscreen, OVM7692 camera module (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/omnivision-technologies-inc/OVM7692-RAAA/3190565), I2S Codec, I2S microphone, 5 buttons, Lipoly Battery, USB Type C with battery charging, and microSD card slot that can be used to load 'Apps' onto the processors. There's also a cute SWD programmer dongle that plugs into the USB so you can do full programming and step debugging of your own application. The strength of the MAXREFDES is that it demonstrates the audio and video inferencing that normally would take a Raspberry Pi-like SBC computer or an online connection for the heavy computation. But, since it's done on-chip, the power draw is much much less and the startup time is nearly instant. This makes it great for portable, battery, or even solar / power-harvesting applications (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvuLv13EGlM) As with most AI products, the biggest challenge for starting out is how to train the model that will be used for inferencing. The MAXREFDES178 comes with a basic voice-detection model that covers about 20 words, or about 10 celebrity faces. However, unless you happen to be designing a paparazzi product you'll need to create the model that detects exactly what you want and then load that into the MAX78000's CNN memory. Analog Devices has a video series (https://www.analog.com/en/education/education-library/videos/video-series/understanding-artificial-intelligence.html) and GitHub documentation repo (https://github.com/MaximIntegratedAI/MaximAI_Documentation) that goes through the process of how to do the training: you can use the popular PyTorch or TensorFlow Lite environments. Note that since the CNN is in hardware, not 'bitbanged' on the main core, you do not have to use TF Lite for Microcontrollers (https://www.tensorflow.org/lite/microcontrollers) - although you could probably run the TFLiteMicro codebase if you wanted, on the MAX78000, it just wouldn't get any hardware acceleration. Creating the model will require collecting a ton of data, image or voice, and then training using a CUDA-powered desktop or cloud computer. If you're interested in edge AI development (https://www.analog.com/en/thought-leadership/the-dream-of-edge-ai.html), the MAX78000 is an excellent chip to use with a familiar ARM M4 core and tons of peripherals to support any external sensors or devices needed - no co-processor needed! There's even a Feather board available (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX78000FTHR/13549063), but for quick audio/video development, the MAXREFDES178 camera kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/t4052tpj) works right out of the box and it's in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Order today and it'll ship immediately so you'll be convolving and neuralling by tomorrow afternoon. See more in the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Toaz-0vdIE

The Great Search: Three-channel Logic Inverter

For our NeoPixel signal to analog LED converter design, we need to convert 3 open drain PWM outputs to drive N-channel sinking MOSFETS. To do that we'll need to invert the signal - but we don't have a ton of space. So let's source a triple-NOT gate that has push-pull output, and can run from 3 or 5V logic. We also want it to be small, but not TOO small! RP2040 USB host to program ESP chips through CDC chips

Historically, we've tested and programmed our Feather ESP8266 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2821) and ESP32 boards (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3405) from a Raspberry Pi. We'd connect over USB and run esptool.py, which works fine but has more things that can go wrong: power flickering, SD card failures, etc. It's better to fully program it with a Pico RP2040 brain board. We can do that now because TinyUSB has support for USB CDC Serial chips (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_TinyUSB_Arduino/tree/master/examples/DualRole/CDC/serial_host_bridge) like the FT232, CP210x, and WCH9102! We upload the stub and test firmware, then listen on the CDC for the self-test output. It works really fast and is much easier to manage. EYE on NPI - STMicroelectronics' AEK-POW-BMS63EN Battery Management System Module

This week's EYE ON NPI is a part of a balanced breakfast, wait no we mean a balanced battery pack! It's STMicroelectronics' AEK-POW-BMS63EN Battery Management System Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/aek-pow-bms63en-battery-management-system-module) featuring the L9963E automotive multicell battery monitoring and balancing IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1). This chip brings automotive-grade battery management to any product designer, at a great price, so you can keep your batteries monitored and balanced for a safe and long usage life. All cars have batteries, and if you have a internal combustion engine car, you're probably familiar with the 12V lead acid battery (https://www.diehard.com/vehicle-batteries/) that needs replacing every 5-10 years, these batteries do not power the moving car itself, just the lights, stereo, electrical system and the spark plugs needed to get the engine running. These batteries are pretty simple, there are two big lugs, a ground and a +12V, inside is 6 series Lead Acid cells, of 2V nominal each. The battery is charged by the engine, and while you don't want to over or under-charge lead-acid batteries are pretty forgiving. In EV electric vehicles, the batteries have to have much higher energy density (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density) so they use Lithium Ion cells, often '18650' cylindrical cells. These are connected in long series strings, to provide high voltages and then parallelized to give high currents. The same batteries are also used in e-scooters, e-skateboards and other micro-mobility devices, they're very low cost, and packs are easy to make. BUT, Lithium-based batteries, as part of the high energy density, have a lower life and are more sensitive to charge and discharge cycles. One of the things we have to worry about is keeping the batteries balanced. That means that we have to monitor each cell in the string carefully to make sure the state of charge matches the rest. The ST L9963E does this in two ways (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1), first is per-cell voltage monitoring, and also per-string current monitoring. Once each cell's state of charge is known, internal or external FETs can be used to shunt current from each cell during the charge cycle, with the goal of bringing the cells back into balance at the cost of charge rate because now we're going to charge every cell as slow as the 'worst' cell. However, this keeps the system safe from overcharging, and is a lot less expensive/complex than active balancing. Since this chip is fairly complex, having a ready-to-go eval board that is already set up with the isolated SPI interface is a worthy investment. You can get started fast and just integrate the AEK-POW-BMS63EN directly into your prototype while you work out your battery management system. The board has USB-like ports on either side but these are actually two-wire isolated SPI, which protects your low-voltage microcontroller or computer from possibly getting zapped by the 48V+ battery. You can use USB A-A cables, since the pinout will work fine, but just be aware you can't plug it into your computer. To connect the opposite side to your micro, you'll also need to pick up a de-isolator AEK-COM-ISOSPI1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/AEK-COM-ISOSPI1/19721659). Finally you'll need to write the SPI interface library for managing the battery. We found one published L9963E library that might get you started (https://github.com/squadracorsepolito/L9963E_lib) - written by the Squadra Corse student Formula SAE teams. (https://squadracorsepolito.com/) If you have a project with large batteries and you want an automotive-grade battery management system, the L9963E automotive multicell battery monitoring and balancing IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1) and matching Evaluation Board (https://www.digikey.com/short/c00jq224) will make it easy to get started. And best of all, both are in stock right now for purchase at DigiKey! Place your order today and your order will ship in moments, so you can get started with battery management by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: Replacement Gyro/Accel 6-DoF for LSM6DS33

2021 and 2022 were rough years for IMUs - they were quickly sold out everywhere and remained unavailable for most of the years. We're trying to get the last of the 'part shortage' designs back into stock. This week we're doing the CLUE and Feather sense - both sensor-packed designs! We used a 'pair' of chips, the LSM6DS33 plus the LIS3MDL. We previously found an alternative to the LIS3MDL (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/03/15/the-great-search-triple-axis-magnetometer-replacement-for-lis3mdl-thegreatsearch-digikey-adafruit/). This week we're going to look for a good alternative for the LSM6DS33, with similar or better performance!

Bi-metal and bi-axled and soon ready to buy-in-the-store! 🔧🤖⚙️

We got these samples of 'two-faced' metal-gear motors. They're basically like a cross between our metal-geared motor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3801) and the double-axle plastic gear motor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3777), perhaps useful for some robotics projects! We want to ensure the motor is good quality and will work effortlessly with our hardware, so we run it on our demo Feather and then take it apart to check out the construction. EYE on NPI - Microchip's MPLAB PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger

This week's EYE ON NPI is the 'top' pick for the 'top' of the year: our first NPI choice of 2024 is Microchip's MPLAB PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/microchip-technology/mplab-pickit-5-in-circuit-debugger) This is the latest all-in-one toolkit for programming and debugging any chip available from Microchip, and believe us when we say there's a lot of chips available with different program/debug systems that need supporting! MCP purchased Atmel in 2016 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmel#Acquisition_by_Microchip_Technology) and since then has been slowly integrating Atmel chips such as AVR/SAM/ATtiny/ATmega into the MCP toolchains and workflows. For that reason, the PICkit is powered by a advanced 300MHz ATSAME70 chip, which provides ICSP, MIPS EJTAG, SWD, AVR JTAG, AVR UPDI & PDI, AVR ISP, TPI and debugWire. To do that, there's an 8-pin 0.1" socket connector on the end, you're expected to select the right grouping of pins for whatever chip you're targeting. You can make a custom wire harness, but we think you might be best off also picking up the AC102015 Adapter Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/tr3bhf52) which comes with every popular cable adapter. OK since we are talking about a PICkit, it's not surprising that all of the PIC microcontrollers are supported - these use an "ICSP" programming method (https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/30277d.pdf) with power, ground, two data pins and a VPP high-voltage line for FLASH reprogramming. We still use this interface to program chips like the PIC12 on the pixie 3W LED driver (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2741) This interface is ancient and will program basically every PIC12, PIC16 and beyond - Microchip was thankfully very consistent on this interface. Of course, you probably are also using Cortex-based chips: these use JTAG and SWD (https://developer.arm.com/documentation/101636/latest/Debug-and-Trace/JTAG-SWD-Interface). Those are also supported! Since this is a programmer plug debugger, you can also connect SWO for trace. The same JTAG/SWD interface is used for programming and debug. Supporting AVRs is also included, and for less than the price of the ATMEL ICE (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/microchip-technology/ATATMEL-ICE-BASIC/4753381) you get all the same chips supported. Aaaand there's a lot more required to support the whole AVR family. For example, many small older ATtiny chips, you'll be using TPI (https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/Appnotes/doc8373.pdf) because you only have a couple pins available. On newer ATtiny chips (and maybe even ATmegas) the async-uart-single-wire UPDI interface (https://onlinedocs.microchip.com/pr/GUID-DDB0017E-84E3-4E77-AAE9-7AC4290E5E8B-en-US-4/index.html?GUID-9B349315-2842-4189-B88C-49F4E1055D7F) is becoming more popular, that's available with an optional high-voltage mode which would let you use the UPDI pin as a reset pin as well. Standard ISP is supported for programming those Arduino compatibles you've got in a drawer, and there's also debugWire support! This was a one-wire debugging interface for AVRs that we never got to try out, so maybe now I will be able to! Don't forget you'll want that AC102105 Adapter Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/tr3bhf52) to make wiring to various dev boards easier. The most interesting new features that we haven't seen on other programmers is the 'Programmer To Go' field-reprogramming capability which allows burning full programming configuration files off of a micro SD card to any target, it can even be powered from the target if needed! Use MPLAB X to create the file that contains all the fuses and data to be transferred. Save to any FAT32 formatted uSD card, then on site you can press the button to re-program the device. The indicator LED strip will give some visual feedback so you know what it's up to. If you want more control over the setup, use the iOS or Android app to pair over Bluetooth, then select which file and also get error reports in readable text. For any development needs you've got with PIC or AVR or SAM chips, the Microchip MPLAB PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger (https://www.digikey.com/short/fznt5mnh) is going to be the best and most-supported tool - being an official Microchip product means you don't have to worry about future chip support or historic chip maintenance. And best of all it is in stock right now at DigiKey for under $100.(https://www.digikey.com/short/fznt5mnh) Add one to your cart and it will ship immediately so you can be PIC'ing, debugWire'ing and UPDI'ing by tomorrow afternoon.

3.5" 320x480 capacitive touch FeatherWing proto 🔧📱✨

We just finished revising our resistive 3.5" TFT FeatherWing (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3651) - it's been out of stock due to part shortages and needed a complete redesign, and then found this ancient box of 3.5" capacitive touch screens (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5846)...so with a bit of razzle-dazzle-CAD-o-matic we put together a 3.5" TFT Wing with capacitive touch support! This screen is nice in that it has true multi-touch capabilities. The 3.5" 320x480 capacitive touch FeatherWing will make an excellent Wing display that only needs SPI + I2C to interface. We only need to push down the bottom edge so that it can 'clear' the FT5336, which is on the FPC. TS3USB30 USB mux tester is a go! 🔌🔬💻

The Adafruit TS3USB30 1 to 2 USB Switch is a nifty breakout board for the TI TS3USB30 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TS3USB30ERSWR/2092506) that will let you connect one of two USB devices to a single port, handy when you have multiple chips that you may want to communicate over USB but you don't want a hub. Our new breakout will connect one or the other. We designed for USB to handle high bandwidth USB 2.0 connections of 480 Mbps. But before we put it into stock, we gotta test it! This tester has two different USB peripherals connected: a CP2102 on a Metro Mini and an FT232RL in a console cable. We're using the Metro RP2040's bit-banging USB host stack (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-feather-rp2040-with-usb-type-a-host) to test enumeration: when the RP2040 detects two different PIDs based on the switching pin, we know the board is good! Feather nRF52840 Sense is born anew! 🎉🔧🪶

Like the CLUE board, another one of the boards that has been out of stock for a looooooong time is the Feather nRF52840 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4516) - so many of the components got discontinued or were unavailable on this board it took till now to get enough parts to put it back in stock! The biggest one is the LSM6DS33 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4480) is discontinued, so we replaced it with the LSM6DS3TRC (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4503) - the tester code required some updating so we also swapped it from using a Teensy 3.6, now entirely discontinued, to our Pico Brains. The complete program and test take about 30 seconds. We're excited to restock this prodigal board! MAX3421e USB Host FeatherWing test 🖥️ 🔌 ✅

We previously made a jerry-rigged USB Host Wing (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5858) tester based on an ESP32-S2 TFT board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5300) and a pogo-pin (https://www.adafruit.com/product/394) filled Feather Doubler (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2890) - but for final testing of hundreds of boards off a panel, a nice custom-made PCB is better. This one uses a Metro M0 since our SAMD21 board support package has TinyUSB support - so we can verify if we enumerate the connected USB peripheral. If a vid/pid is found, we're good to go, and beep and blink to indicate the test has passed. TPS61040 12V booster gold test

we designed this TPS61040 board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS61040DBVR/454263) like a year ago and messed up the BOM on the first run so that it had 100 ohm resistors instead of 100K for the voltage-setting divider. woops! and then it sorta sat on the "to fix" pile for a long time. but...new year, new us! time to fix and get back into production. the tester is a Metro 328 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/50), it turns on and off a 120 ohm load to verify the 12V output can source the current specified. a resistor divider goes from the output to a analog input. beep! its good to go :) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Our 3.5" TFT FeatherWing needed a lil nudge and now we're clear to launch 🚀🛠️📈

our previous prototype of the 3.5" capacitive tft wing - which combines our 3.5" TFT captouch breakout (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5846) with the 3.5" TFT featherwing (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3651) had a bit of a flaw in that the cut out for the FPC was bumping into the FT5336 chip. this new rev scoots down a bit, so now it has plenty of room. the board is a bit longer but no risk of crushing! passing test, its ready to book for stocking into the shop - coming soon :) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Grove FeatherWing testing

this prototype board allows folks to use many Grove devices with Feather boards! it fits nicely on top and has 3 Analog/Digital connectors, 1 UART connector and 2 I2C connectors. Not a ton, but enough to get many small projects going. we even managed to fit a vertical Stemma QT port on the end for another I2C connection. we think this board will be handy for bridging two great standards! EYE on NPI - Analog Devices LTC4332 Point-to-Point Rugged SPI Extender

This week's EYE ON NPI is an EYE ON SPI! We're going looooooooong with the Analog Devices LTC4332 Point-to-Point Rugged SPI Extender (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/analog-devices/ltc4332-point-to-point-rugged-spi-extender) which lets you take what normally would be a short PCB-trace connection to SPI devices and have them up to 1200 meters away - that's over 12 football fields (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football_field) using a differential link protocol that can run on common CAT-6 cabling. This means you can have have super long SPI connections for distributed node communications that need more bandwidth than I2C but don't need the complexity of an Ethernet controller. ADI's LTC4332 is a point-to-point rugged SPI extender designed for operation in high-noise industrial environments over long distances. Using a ±60 V fault-protected differential transceiver, the LTC4332 can transmit SPI data, including an interrupt signal, up to 2 MHz over two twisted pair cables. The extended common mode range and high common mode rejection on the differential link provide tolerance to large ground differences between nodes. We're excited about the LTC4332 (https://www.digikey.com/short/88rpbrfh) because we know that Linear Tech-designed hardware is really good quality and the specifications are 'real' rather than optimistic. We've used a similar-family chip for I2C, the LTC4311 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4756) which is an active terminator - but found it definitely will let you extend I2C to 100 feet with no issue and no code required. The LTC4332 (https://www.digikey.com/short/88rpbrfh) is, likewise, a 'transparent' bridge chip that converts a 4-wire SPI connection, with 3 chip selects and one IRQ line to a differential protocol that will work nicely with common Ethernet cables (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_6_cable). One nice detail is that you can use any of the 4 common SPI modes for polarity and SCK latch-direction (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Peripheral_Interface#Mode_numbers). The same chip is used on both sides of the controller and peripheral connection, simply set the REMOTE pin to high or low to determine which side is which. Then make sure the SPEED pins are set up the same, as they will determine the expected max-clock speed. Wire up the two differential pairs, when the connection is good, the LINK pin will drop low which you can use like an Ethernet link light. For more advanced configuration you can connect to the internal chip to read fault and status bytes. However, it looks like you don't have to unless you want more control: the chip will function transparently even without firmware register configs. One thing to watch out for, while controller-to-peripheral data is sent instantaneously, reading data is delayed by one byte because it has to read the full byte in and then transfer it over the differential connection. So if you're using it to read from a remote sensor or driver, make sure to 'toss' the first byte and read an extra byte at the end! If you're looking to go long with a simple solution to remote SPI communication, the Analog Devices LTC4332 Point-to-Point Rugged SPI Extender is an excellent choice (https://www.digikey.com/short/7zcd7vc5), don't forget you'll need two for each remove device. There's also a compact dev board available called DC2799A (https://www.digikey.com/short/qbn5397v) that has input and output sides for instant testing. The LTC4332 (https://www.digikey.com/short/7zcd7vc5) is in stock right now for immediate shipment from DigiKey - order today and you'll be able to take your SPI devices to the next level - like literally to the new few floors up - by tomorrow afternoon!
