EYE on NPI - Hirose DF40F Series Board-to-Board Connectors

This week's EYE ON NPI is a sweet valentine, as the Bard famously spoke "What's in a connector? That which we call a Hirose DF40F Series Board-to-Board connector by any other word would smell as sweet" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_rose_by_any_other_name_would_smell_as_sweet). OK, well, maybe we chocolate-fudged that reference a bit but it's still a perfect day for lovers of reliable products from Hirose as today we're looking at the Hirose DF40F and friends (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/h/hirose/df40f-series-board-to-board-connectors) - diamond-rock solid connectors that mate together perfectly like perfect partners. Ok, I know your number one question, it's how to pronounce Hirose (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4wd9qEZV5A) - is it "high rose"? We got ya, it's "hero say"! And they are definitely heroes when it comes to designing connectors, with well-thought-out components that you probably use all the time. For example, did you know that the ultra-popular u.FL connector (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/h/hirose/ufl-series) used almost in every RF product is from Hirose (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirose_U.FL), patented by them in 1993 (https://patents.google.com/patent/US5180315)? Hirose DF40 connectors have popped up in many developer boards, due to their high density and ease-of-use. The first time we saw them was on the Intel Edison boards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Edison), which featured a 70-pin DF40 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2227) for high speed USB or SDIO interfaces. More recently, the same DF40 family is seen on the popular Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0696/13530919), as dual 100 pin connectors that pass USB, Ethernet, PCIe, eMMC, DVI, DSI and CSI MIPI, and DPI parallel TFT displays. You can check out Shawn Hymel's guide on making an adapter board for the CM4 if you want tips on laying out and soldering DF40's (https://www.digikey.com/en/maker/projects/creating-a-raspberry-pi-compute-module-4-cm4-carrier-board-in-kicad/7812da347e5e409aa28d59ea2aaea490) And looking at the specs for the DF40 series (https://www.hirose.com/product/series/DF40) we see that these connectors are very well 'rounded': they can handle high voltages like 30V AC or DC, high speeds up to 10 Gbps, and fairly high currents 0.3A per pin - just double or triple up pins if you need more current capacity. That means you don't need separate power connectors and can power single board linux computers like the CM4 directly over the same connectors that pass HDMI and PCIe data for reliable and compact connectivity. Compared to 2.54mm or 2mm pitch headers, you don't have to worry about pins getting bent or the high offset height from IDC connectors because the Hirose DF40 series can be as low as 2mm, or as high as 4mm if you need height for component clearance. They're good for at least 30 mating cycles, with grooves to help align for easy mate and de-mate, just make sure to press down flat in the center and lift from two opposite edges so you minimize torque. If you have a submodule or multi-stacked board design and you need a low-profile, high-speed and high-power connector, the Hirose DF40F series of board-to-board connectors (https://www.digikey.com/short/dnr4r5j1) is trusted and reliable by many. I think of Hirose as the "YKK Zippers" of connectors (https://ykkamericas.com/products/zippers/): if you design a $100 board and it fails because of a poorly crafted $1 connector, the quality and reputation of your product is damaged - but if you use a reliable, enjoyable connector that makes good contact each time, the quality and reputation is enhanced! You can order DF40 and DF40F series in a wide series of sizes and configurations from DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/short/dt70d4t0) all in stock right now and available for immediate shipment, like FTD (https://www.ftd.com/). Book today and your favorite Hirose connectors will ship instantly so that you can get to stacking and snapping by tomorrow afternoon.

NeoPixel to RGB common anode converter testing

we're often working with 'true analog' LED strips (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=analog+LED), that have 1-3 channels of RGB or White LEDs. and controlling these takes a bit of wiring since they almost always need 12VDC and driver FETs. to make our lives easier, and maybe even some customer's too, here's a STEMMA board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3893) that can convert a NeoPixel signal using a WS2811F to three AO3406 N-channel FETs (https://www.digikey.com/short/438tn2hb) that are high efficiency and can sink a chunk of current. there's a 3-channel 74LVC3G14 (https://www.digikey.com/short/tqq3tm3m) inverter in between to convert the WS2811 output signal which is open drain, to the NFETs. 5 terminal block ports allow for easy wiring of the +12V, ground, and RGB common-anode channels. unfortunately the WS2811 does not support 4-channel so this won't work for RGBW strips...but there's a lot of times folks need 1 or 3 channels! The Great Search: Right Angle Reflective Light Sensor

In order to archive double-sided floppies, or deal with Apple Disk ][ drives, we need to create 'fake' index pulses, that's something that lets the software know when the disk surface has rotated 1 time. We have a guide page showing how we support 'hacked' disks using an external optical sensor (https://learn.adafruit.com/flippy-floppy-drive-modification/) but it requires some fiddly wiring. Ideally we could make a little breakout board for the reflective sensor that has a cable for quick installation. We'll want it to be 'right angle', ideally SMT solderable, and it should be a plain logic or analog type output since I2C isn't going to be fast enough to catch transitions. EYE on NPI - MPS MPM3510A 36 V 1.2 A Step-Down Converter

This week's EYE ON NPI is one of a kind - it's the MPS MPM3510A 36 V 1.2 A Step-Down Converter from Monolithic Power Systems (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/mps/mpm3510a-36v-1-2a-step-down-converter). You might be asking yourself, "wait, is this the same Monolith that appeared in Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypEaGQb6dJk)?" Technically... no. But, we are talking about a new product that comes to you as a black oblong, and contains technology that will transform and evolve your schematic to the next level of existence. The MPM3510A and friends (https://www.digikey.com/short/5dv839jp) are part of the fully-integrated DC/DC converter family from MPS. These modules contain a step-down chip as well as an inductor - plus maybe a passive or two - to create a tiny buck converter that can take an input from 4.5V to 36V DC and convert it down to 0.8V to 36V, configurable with a resistor divider. Despite it's petite stature, it can source 1.2A, and as its an efficient DC/DC converter, no heatsink is required. With the high integration, you only need two resistors and two capacitors to complete the design. We first spotted these converters on Arduino boards like the Nano Every (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/ABX00028/10239971) that need to be small and thin. Specifically, that's using the MPM3610A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/monolithic-power-systems-inc/MPM3610AGQV-Z/5292908), which is an earlier version of the MPM3510 which goes to 21V max instead of 36V. We also have a cute breakout for the MPM3610 with either 3.3V fixed (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4683/12822323) or 5V fixed (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4739/13175530) output. Files for those boards are available on GitHub under an open source license (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-MPM3610-PCB) If you want to quickly integrate the MPM series, check out the downloadable footprints and 3D models available in the EDA Models page (https://www.digikey.com/en/models/7361650). And, even though layout is simple, you should still consult the datasheet to make sure you've got the right setup for the bulk capacitors and power fills, since 1.2A output is a fair amount. One trade-off of having such a small solution is that to get the combined package so small, the inductor has to be low inductance, which means that the PWM frequency of the DC/DC converter is 1-2 MHz. That means you won't be at the top of efficiency...for that you'd have to design a converter with lower frequencies and much bigger inductor. If you need more or less than 1.2A output, or a different range of voltages for inputs or outputs, there's a whole family available of MPM modules, from the diminutive 2mm x 2mm MPM3804 that works only up to 5V and 0.6A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/monolithic-power-systems-inc/MPM3804GG-Z/7361493) up the chonkin' MPM3686, with a 12x15x14mm body, and 20 Amps output. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/monolithic-power-systems-inc/MPM3686GRU/5298342) Thankfully, all these chips are yours to use! And, best of all, the MPS MPM3510A 36 V 1.2 A Step-Down Converter (https://www.digikey.com/short/5dv839jp) and friends are all in stock right now for immediate purchase from DigiKey. Order today and it will be shipped instantly, so that you can get your design completed and to market in record time: no worrying over your DC/DC converter design size, efficiency or component selection.

The Great Search: Pre-Biased Transistors

Our cell module we're working with now uses a low-voltage IO core, and when we read the datasheet it helpfully lets us know that we should be using transistors to 'level / current shift' the LED driving outputs. BJT's require a lower voltage to turn on, but they need resistors to help bias - which turns a single component into a 3-piece network. To make our board more compact, let's take a look at 'pre biased' transistors - they come in common packages like SOT-23 and a wide range of resistor configurations! EYE on NPI - STMicroelectronics' STM32U5 Series Ultra-Low-Power MCUs

This week's EYE ON NPI has a dash of DSI - it's the new STM32U5 Series microcontroller processors from ST (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32u5-series-ultra-low-power-mcus). These bring a wonderful upgrade from the same-old same-old Cortex M4 or M7 with some eye-popping peripherals that will make quick work of any graphics project, but without the weight of a Linux processor overhead. There's lots of chips that purport to have a 'graphics interface' but the moment you sit down to actually use it, you realize that there's very limited SRAM for the graphics display. So you either have to use slow external PSRAM, or you don't get a double-buffer for smooth updates. That's because it's kinda rare to see a microcontroller with more than maybe 1 MB of SRAM. The STM32U5 series is plumped up with up to 3 MBytes of delicious on-chip SRAM, which is perfect for double buffering a 800x480 display with 1.5MB left over, or even double-buffered 720x720 with 1 MB of SRAM left over. Compare that to the STM32H7's max of 1 MB. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32h7-32-bit-high-performance-mcu) That RAM will come in handy because this is one of the first microcontrollers we've seen that has true DSI host support! DSI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_Serial_Interface) is the latest interface standard for connecting to medium-size displays of approximately 480x480 pixels or larger. It's a differential signalling interface which means fewer pins, but the ability to go fast to address fairly large displays. However, because it's differential and high speed, you really need peripheral support - which very few chips have unless you upgrade to microprocessors that drive phones or tablets. Previous to DSI, folks would use SPI displays for up to about 320x240 (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=spi+display) and 8-bit parallel for displays from 128x640 up to around 480x320 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1774) and then for displays larger than that - 480x272 or greater - RGB TTL dotclock interface. SPI displays are nice because they have a built in framebuffer - but SPI is slow so you can't drive anything but the smallest screens. Parallel is faster, but still suffers from speed issues. RGB TTL displays have no framebuffer, so you have to write them continuously, and that requires built in RAM or PSRAM and hardware support to keep up with 20-60 FPS updates. Also, ideally, double-buffers to avoid tearing. However, you need a pin for each bit of colors, so easily 30 pins are needed - and even then RGB TTL tends to top out at 1024x600. For 720p or 1080p, most folks would go with HDMI, but you can get these displays with DSI interfaces: and DSI only uses 6-10 pins for 2 to 4 lanes of data plus a clock lane. These new chips are a nice step up from the STM32F7 and H7 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32h7-32-bit-high-performance-mcu) in that they have the low price, multiple pin package count, with improved RAM and display support. There's also variants with hardware crypto support, high-speed USB, and like we mentioned, with DSI host. There's also a new version of the NeoChrom graphics engine that has vector graphics support, vector font rendering, and JPEG hardware decoding which will allow for video playback with MJPEG (https://blog.st.com/neochrom-gpu-neochromvg-gpu/). We're excited to see DSI interfaces make their way into microcontrollers, and doubly so because the STM32U5 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32u5-series-ultra-low-power-mcus) is in stock for immediate shipment from DigiKey! We particularly like the feel of the STM32U599 as it has a l'il bit of everything without being top-of-the-line, and it comes in QFP (https://www.digikey.com/short/15vv8m9r) for easy integration no matter what fabrication setup you've got. Order some STM32's from DigiKey today and they will ship faster than you can render a bouncing ball, making its way to you by tomorrow afternoon. The Great Search: Single-channel 12V-capable SPDT analog switch

A few weeks ago we showed off our High Voltage UPDI programmer prototype (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYXufxPQAPU). We're still working on that...our Low Voltage one is available in the shop now (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5879). We got a request for us to stock a general-purpose 12v-capable analog switch like the one we used in the HV design. Note this sounds a lot like a previous TGS - but that one was for a quad analog switch and we didn't need to handle voltages above 5V. (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/05/08/the-great-search-analog-switch-chips-and-multiplexers-thegreatsearch-digikey-digikey/) So, let's go hunting at DigiKey for a low cost analog SPDT switch that is higher-voltage capable, we'll also poke around the ADI search system to augment our search. We'll also chat about CMOS vs TTL input levels, to make sure we can easily use the part we find. ESP32 ItsyBitsy is in final testing zOne!

OK, after a long hiatus, the ESP32 Itsy Bitsy prototypes are built and ready for testing! We first designed this board Feb 20, 2020 - and it's been waiting oh so patiently for its turn. The ESP32 Pico module packs 8 MB of flash and 2 MB of PSRAM. Despite its small size this board can handle fairly complex programs. This board is very small but has lots of pins, with a USB-serial converter, NeoPixel, reset and user button, Stemma QT connector, and a 5V-logic output specifically for driving NeoPixels. to do my final 'all in one' test we're reading temperature and humidity from an I2C sensor, sending it to IO, then reading back the onboard NeoPixel color from the dashboard. It's an excellent way to make sure the whole thing is working the way we like. Last up, we'll do a low-power test, and then it'll be ready for fabrication! The Great Search: Micro USB SMT/THM Connectors

All of our ItsyBitsy boards use Micro USB connectors, so despite USB Type C being all the fashion, we're going to continue with sourcing a Micro USB connector for the ESP32 board we just designed. We've learned a lot from years of using Micro USB connectors on the pick and place line. All SMT is a big no-no - go with thru-hole mounting holes for good mechanical security and allow for big pads for lots of solder! Join us as we find a few good options for folks who want to continue using Micro-B connectors in their designs.
