Coming soon - CH552 QT Py is a tiny 8051 board

We designed this CH552-based QT Py board before the chip shortage, but now parts are plentiful so we made some prototypes and are trying out the CH55xduino (https://github.com/DeqingSun/ch55xduino) board support package. and, it works! but watch out, its C not C++ so you can't use the huge collection of existing libraries and drivers. however, for about '40 cents' per chip, you get a 8051 with native USB that can do CDC/HID, has 4x 8-bit ADCs, hardware serial, I2C, SPI and doesn't need a crystal or a lot of passives. obviously there's down sides to such a minimal 8-bit microcontroller chip but we think it could be super fun for some very basic USB projects! EYE on NPI - Richtek RT6160A Buck-Boost Converter with I²C Interface

This week's EYE ON NPI will make you say "Yeee-haww", to the buckin'-and-boostin' bronco known as the Richtek RT6160A Buck-Boost Converter with I²C Interface (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/richtek/rt6160a-buck-boost-converter). The RT6160A is a high-efficiency, single-inductor, synchronous buck-boost converter that can provide up to 3 Amps of current to a dynamically-configurable voltage from 2.025V to 5.2V. With an amazing 2uA quiescent current, this chip lets you add an advanced power supply for the price of an LDO that will let you design with the smallest possible battery. We're big fans of Richtek for low quiescent power supply chips - our favorite 3.3V LDO is the RT9080-33 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/richtek-usa-inc/RT9080-33GJ5/6161634) which can provide up to 600mA with a 0.5V dropout, and a really nice 4uA quiescent current. This is great for deep-sleep wireless projects where you've got a chip with ultra-low power snooze modes, like the ESP32 - we were able to get down to 10.5 uA in deep sleep thanks to the RT9080! (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-itsybitsy-esp32/low-power-use). Compare that to the AP2112K which we used to use, has a quiescent current of 55uA. However, the RT9080 is a LDO fixed at 3.3V@600mA - and of course, LDOs have that dropout which translates to power lost. If you want to sip every last Coulomb out of the battery on hand, you'll need a DC/DC converter. Usually we see a buck converter - since you are converting from a Lithium Polymer battery, you'll have 3.7V nominal, 4.2V peak voltage and maybe you'll buck that down to 3V. If you want to really get the best possible range of performance, you can go with a buck boost (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buck%E2%80%93boost_converter). That way you can buck down from 3.4-4.2V and then as the battery starts drooping, the chip switches into a boost mode to cover the 2.7V~3.2V range. The RT6160A is a Buck-Boost converter that seems well designed for battery-powered projects, with an input and output range of about 2 to 5V. The default output is 3.3V and you can 'select' between two voltages by toggling a GPIO pin. This makes it easy to adjust the desired voltage and then swap from 'high' to 'low' voltages without an I2C command. Why would you want two voltages? Well, you could use 3.3V or greater for when you want the best performance from a radio, then drop down to 2.5V when the radio isn't on and you want to reduce both the conversion current and also reduce your chip quiescent current: most microcontrollers will use lower current at lower voltages since they are not pushing around as much current onto the internal logic FETs. Combine this with a microcontroller's dynamic clock frequency configuration and you've got a simple system to squeeze more current out of your battery. And usually you have to 'spend' a lot of current to run the DC/DC converter, but this chip has an amazing 2uA quiescent current - lower than most LDOs we've used, and amazing for an up-to-3A output device. If you want to have the lowest quiescent, highest-flexibility power management chip in your next design, the Richtek RT6160A Buck-Boost Converter with I²C Interface (https://www.digikey.com/short/hv7fm4nt) is an excellent choice: Richtek really know their power supplies and they keep it nice and simple so you can get to integration instantly. Best of all, DigiKey has the RT6160A (https://www.digikey.com/short/hv7fm4nt) in stock right now, for immediate shipment, and $1.32 by the reel! All you need is some ceramic caps and an inductor. For fast testing in your application, there are also some EVB_RT6160AWSC (https://www.digikey.com/short/0p80hqvj) eval boards in stock. Order today and you can be waving your cowboy hat in celebration by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: PCB-mount USB Type C Plug

This week on the Great Search, we're going to be looking for the Type C version of the USB A plugs we have on some of our boards, like our Bluefruit Friend (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2267). This will let us make our Trinkey's modern-friendly and will let them be plugged in directly into USB C. The only problem is we want a connector that can be pick-and-placed and does not need manual insertion on the end of a PCB like many of the connectors we've seen in the field. Let's see what's available at DigiKey! ESP32-C6 Feather is here, time to bring it up 🚀🛠️💡

The ESP32-C6 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5672) is Espressif’s first Wi-Fi 6 SoC integrating 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 (LE) and the 802.15.4 protocol. It brings the goodness you know from the low-cost C3 series (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5337) and improves it with Zigbee/802.15.4 at 2.4Ghz. That means it could make for great Matter (https://csa-iot.org/all-solutions/matter/) development hardware! We took our Feather ESP32-S2 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5000) and swapped out the 'S2 for a C6. Plus some re-routing and here's what we've got: a C6 Feather with lots of GPIO, lipoly charging and monitoring with the MAX17048, (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5580) NeoPixel, I2C Stemma QT port, and a second low-quiescent LDO for disabling the I2C and NeoPixel when we want ultra-low power usage. We also tossed a BME280 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2652) on there, so you could use it immediately as a low power temp/hum/pressure sensor. Now it's time to do the bringup - we like to blink LEDs, toggle pins, and also check that NeoPixels glow up. Good news: so far everything works! We're going to keep at it and see if we can maybe get a simple Matter demo going before we book the PCBs #adafruit #feather #esp32c6 #featherboard #wifi6 #bluetooth5 #zigbee #matteriot #lowpower #iotdevelopment #tempmonitoring #pcbdesign Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Tutorial Intro: Add Lights to your Festival Coat

Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/led-festival-coat-with-mapping-and-wled This guide will demonstrate two different methods of lighting up a coat: Fur Trim Lights: String LED lights inside the ubiquitous furry trim that's found on so many Festival jackets. This is a fairly easy build that doesn't require a lot of sewing or coding skills. Light Matrix Panels: Create a 3-panel LED matrix between the coat fabric and lining that runs 2d animations on the body of the coat. This is a more complicated build that requires some coat deconstruction and sewing, and requires some detail-oriented number work to get the LED map created. The wiring is the same for both builds, and it's possible to do both in the same coat, though that makes the software setup pretty tricky. This guide uses the free, open-source WLED software. It's easy to install and to use. Control the lights with your phone or computer over your WiFi network when you're at home, or via AP-MODE (access point mode) when you're out and about. WLED comes with loads of customizable animations for your lights. QT Py USB Host BFF Tests a Trinkey

our popular USB Host FeatherWing (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5858) lets anyone with a Feather board add USB Host support via the MAX3421E (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX3421EETJ-T/1455883) chip - a tried and true SPI-to-USB converter. here's a tinified version, that fits on the back of any QT Py or Xiao board. use SPI plus a CS and IRQ pin and you're ready to rock. theres tinyUSB support for me MAX3421 chip (https://github.com/hathach/tinyusb/issues/2001) for Arduino which means its trivial to connect to a USB keyboard, mouse, storage key, or a USB serial device like this Trinkey! We're using our SHT45 Trinkey (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5896) as a demo board since its an easy way to quickly verify enumeration and data transfer. since the BFF/QTPy form-factor is too small for a proper USB Type A, we're going with a micro B, you can just an OTG adapter to turn it into a full size A (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1099) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: 1% through-hole resistor kits

This week on the Great Search, we saw a post on social media asking for good quality through-hole 1% resistor kits. (https://twitter.com/mightyohm/status/1772784883313836284). We've bumped into the same issue as Jeff, where getting inexpensive kits are poorly packaged and are '1/8W' style with skinny leads that do not grip into breadboards. Thankfully, DigiKey has such in stock - let's check out the resistor packs available and which ones you may want to start with so you don't break-the-bank. More Trinkeys stocking soon - starting with SHT45 Trinkey

Back in 2021 we were on a real tear (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=trinkey) making a whole bunch of 'low cost and easy to use' USB devices called Trinkeys (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=trinkey): the idea is you could just shove it into your USB A port on a computer or laptop and get instant access to a few NeoPixels (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4870) or an APDS9960 proximity sensor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5022) or a rotary encoder (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4964). buuuut then there was a massive chip shortage (https://blog.adafruit.com/category/adafruit-video/chip-shortage/) and we couldn't get any ATSAMD21E18's which power most of the designs. welp, we have lots now. so lets keep designing Trinkeys! This is a trinkey with an SHT45 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5665), a favorite humidity and temperature sensor! The factory code will just spit out temperature and humidity over the USB Serial port in CSV format for easy integration. there's also a neopixel and a captouch sensor. we added a U-shaped cut-out to minimize self-heating from the neopixel or samd21 chip to get the best accuracy, we'll also have a version with an SHT41 that's less expensive (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5776) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

DC polarity reversal cable is a handy friend! 🔌⚡🔄

Once in a while we find products that have center NEGATIVE DC power jacks and they really make us mad because who keeps around both positive and negative polarity versions of every voltage? now, hopefully USB PD https://www.adafruit.com/product/5807 will solve this long term, but till then this 2.1mm DC flipper flopper adapter will connect in to out and out to in and voila - your standard center-positive is now center-negative. or vice versa! how handy is that. #adafruit #cable #polarity #dcflipper Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Solderless header for quick prototyping 🔌🔧👩‍🔧

We got a request from some folks for "solder-less pin header" - these snap-apart headers look just like your regular pin headers but they have a little slot in the shorter end that can make a cold-contact with pads on a PCB. only thing is, since they are wedged in, you need some good leverage and it takes a few tries to get the hang of it. but they do work, we checked continuity! for quick prototyping, these could be kinda handy. coming soon to the adafruit shop.... EYE on NPI - DIGIKEY STANDARD Tool Kit

This week's EYE ON NPI is going double-or-nothing, not only is this segment brought to you by DigiKey, the product this week is also from DigiKey: it's the DIGIKEY STANDARD Tool Kit DKS-TK1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/d/digikey-standard/standard-tool-kit) an all-in-one pack that contains tools and accessories to make electronics assembly & repair a breeze. Part of DigiKey's new branding is stocking some of their own designs under the "DigiKey Standard" name (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/digikey-standard). For example, DK has their own line of battery holders (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/category/battery-products/6?v=8174,4883,4957,1618,4937,4935,4783,5021), project prototyping boxes (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/category/boxes-enclosures-racks/27?v=8174,4883,4957,1618,4937,4935,4783,5021), and heat shrink (https://www.digikey.com/short/bbfzd04f) amongst others. This product is reminiscent of our "Ladyada Toolkit" (https://www.adafruit.com/product/136), a $100 pack for folks who kept asking us how to "get started soldering and assembling Adafruit kits" Included is... - Hakko Blue 508 soldering iron (https://www.digikey.com/short/3787w0h1) with conical SMT tip installed. An extra tip is also included. 120V 40W US plug - Soldering iron rest with sponge - Wire solder - 0.8mm diameter, 50 g - Solder Wick - 2mm wide 5ft long - Solder Sucker - Screwdriver Kit - with Philips 00, 0 and 1 plus Flathead 2mm, 2.4mm and 3mm - CAT III multimeter with leads, for resistance, continuity, voltage, and current measurement. A 9V battery is also included and should be installed before usage - Fancy Wire stripper - with slots for 10 AWG through 24 AWG - Wire Cutters - Needle Nose Pliers - Rugged hinged tote with labeled slots for all items All together, a great starter kit for a student, school, technician or maker who needs a little bit of everything. In particular we like that DigiKey splurged on a Hakko quality iron and gives you an extra soldering tip! If you are looking for a great starter kit for a maker or engineer, or just want to outfit your workshop or office with a repair kit that can put together or take apart electronics, the Digikey Standard Tool Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/bhnjr8p8) is in stock right now for immediate shipment. Tutorial Intro: Sound Reactive NeoPixel Lanterns with WLED and LED Fx

Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/sound-reactive-paper-lanterns-with-led-fx Create an array of paper lanterns and control them with sound. This guide uses a Feather ESP32 V2 loaded with the free, open source WLED software. Buy on the Adafruit Website: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5400 WLED runs on the Feather, using WiFi to allow you to control the lights with your phone, PC, or any wifi-enabled device. This is a lot of fun, and will make for a beautiful piece of light art in your space that's easy to control and program with your phone. But this guide goes further! WLED interfaces seamlessly with LED Fx, an open-source program that runs on your computer to capture and analyze sound, either from your music player or from your computer's microphone. It takes the sound and translates it into light effects, so your lights can run sound-reactive animations over WiFi without needing to add a physical microphone. WLED has sound reactive effects. Why not just use WLED? WLED does have sound reactive modes available, but the sound needs to be run and processed through a small microphone soldered to your ESP32. These microphones don't have the same quality pickup as the one on your PC, and may not be physically located where the sound is optimal. The effects don't have as many controls, and tend to be a little "blinky". LED Fx gives you great sound input and a lot of solid animations with controls that allow you to really dial in your animations. It's just as easy to use but I've gotten much nicer results with LED Fx. The Great Search: Wide band "Code Learning" Infrared Receiver

A year ago we designed a high-current-output Infrared Transmitter STEMMA (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5639) and had to find a high brightness right angle LED. (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/10/18/the-great-search-bright-side-emitting-infrared-smt-led-thegreatsearch-digikey-digikey-adafruit/) Today we sat down to design the other side, a receiver. We did find a 38KHz receiver that will work, but it got us thinking about 'code learning' IR projects, (https://learn.adafruit.com/building-an-infrared-transmitter-and-receiver-board) where we don't want to demodulate out the 38KHz or whatever frequency, but retain the signal so we can determine the carrier frequency as well as the code. We were all ready to go with the TSMP77000 after our initial search, but then noticed it was EOL (https://www.digikey.com/short/qw72wwqh). Will we find a replacement that is currently manufactured? Sera NX040 Ultra-Wide Band and Bluetooth Combo Module

This week's EYE ON NPI is super phat not unlike a pair of ultra wide JNCOs (https://jnco.com/collections/womens-1/products/the-camilla-jeans-27-vintage-houndstooth) it's the Laird Sera NX040 Ultra-Wide Band and Bluetooth Combo Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/l/laird-embedded-wireless-solutions/sera-nx040-ultra-wide-band-and-bluetooth-combo-module), a compact solution that combines the best of NXP UWB and Nordic BTLE into a single easy-to-use module that is ready for instant integration into your location-based identification products or projects. We often get folks asking how they can do indoor location projects: where an object is tracked in a 2D or 3D space, with high precision. For outdoor projects, most people use GPS/GNSS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_navigation) which can give 10 meter accuracy anywhere in the world. Or, sometimes people use cell tower triangulation (https://blues.com/blog/use-cell-tower-and-wi-fi-triangulation-to-achieve-pin-point-locations-without-gps/) to give rough estimates of location world-wide. However, both of these require you to be outside, with either network connectivity or a GNSS fix - and like we mentioned, you can't get better than 10 meter accuracy without very expensive RTK modules (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=eye+on+npi+rtk). Indoors, sometimes its possible to use WiFi time-of-flight, or BTLE ToF / AoA (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/08/19/eye-on-npi-xplr-aoa-direction-finding-and-indoor-positioning-explorer-kit-eyeonnpi-digikey-ublox-digikey-adafruit/) More interesting, we can also use multiple stationary transmitters to determine the 3D location of a mobile device. Instead of looking for one pulse, we encode the transmitter ID into the pulses, and then can correlate each received pulse to the fixed 3D location of the station. As long as we have 4 stations, we can solve for XYZ and yes that's a lot of stations but you can get 10cm accuracy, which blows away BTLE and WiFi RSSI or ToF methods. Note that doing the triangulation on UWB pings requires a ton of math which is why having a ready-to-go module is great because NXP and Laird will provide example code to get you started. While most folks think of UWB as a 3D locator, NXP promotes some other use cases - most notably peer-to-peer payments (https://www.nxp.com/company/about-nxp/nxp-collaborates-with-ing-and-samsung-to-pilot-industrys-first-uwb-based-peer-to-peer-payment-application:NW-NXP-COLLABORATES-WITH-ING-AND-SAMSUNG-TO) and keyless car access. The key-less entry proffer is the most timely as there's been a spate of car theft rings that use relay attacks to amplify the signal from a key fob (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/16/style/keeping-your-car-safe-from-electronic-thieves.html) if the car is parked close to the house and the keys are kept near the door. Thanks to UWB now being included in iPhones and in the iOS API,you can likely have customers use their iPhones to directly interact with the Sera NX040. To save you time and integration costs, the Sera NX040 (https://www.digikey.com/short/hmzt8whq) include the NXP UWB chipset and all supporting circuitry, plus a Nordic nRF52833 (https://www.digikey.com/short/jj9r27p2) which is a Cortex M4 with all the peripherals, plus the best Bluetooth LE radio on the market. Nordic's chips are especially good at low-power use-cases so battery-powered designs will benefit from this combo. The NXP SR040 is wired to the nRF via SPI - you'll use the NXP SDK for that, which you need to contact NXP for. Or you can use the Laird MicroPython build which comes with some ready-to-go examples. The Seras are available with either built in tuned antenna (https://www.digikey.com/short/hmzt8whq) or a external antenna connection - you'll need to pick up a NanoUWB antenna (https://www.digikey.com/short/1wq0t5r0) to match (https://www.digikey.com/short/ctw5m4t8). As you can expect for a device with two wireless components, proper layout is essential to get good performance from both the BLE side and the UWB side - check the Laird documentation on how to set up keep-outs and ground planes. Finally, if you want to get started you can always pick up the NX040 Eval Board (https://www.digikey.com/short/hhtqhwc9) which has SWD debug for programming the nRF, USB connection for MicroPython or Zephyr debugging, and a separate RP2040+MikroBus+Qwiic half that can be used for adding sensors or displays. Whew, this NPI was not just ultra-wide but ultra-long: we learned a lot while researching the Sera NX040 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWf9fcx26wg) and the modern uses of UWB! If you want to get in on this multi-purpose RF protocol, you're in luck because DigiKey has the Laird Sera NX040 UWB+BTLE Module (https://www.digikey.com/short/hmzt8whq) and accessories in stock right now for immediate shipment. Order today and they'll send you parts faster than an UWB pulse so you can get started with integration in nanoseconds.
