MJPEGs are a great way to play small animations on TFTs 🎞️ 🖥️ 🔄
With our ESP32-S3 TFT experimenter board, we're now able to use the Arduino_GFX https://github.com/moononournation/Arduino_GFX library by moononournation which has native RGB TFT support and excellent example code. This example is playing MJPEG files, a simple animation format https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_JPEG with just JPEGs glued together. We wired up a MicroSD card over SPI for quick file storage and retrieval, or 1-bit MMC works, too. files are converted with ffmpeg: 'ffmpeg -i "wash.mp4" -vf "fps=10,vflip,hflip,scale=-1:480:flags=lanczos,crop=480:480" -pix_fmt yuvj420p -q:v 9 wash.mjpeg', natch! And then they play, about 9fps is the rate we're getting for 480x480 pixels. EYE on NPI Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC
This week's EYE ON NPI will make your sensors soft and luxurious thanks to the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/zssc3241-sensor-signal-conditioning-ic) - which, like a fancy bottle of hair conditioner, will de-tangle any frustrations you have with using resistive sensors that require amplification and filtering. Many "sensors" that engineers use to measure temperature, pressure, force, light, etc, are actually implemented as resistive sensors. For example, take your common CdS cell (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/photo-detectors-cds-cells/540) also known as an LDR - Light Dependant Resistor. The CdS material has an interesting property that as light shines on it, the resistance decreases. Another common sensor is the PT100 or PT1000 temperature sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/temperature-sensors/rtd-resistance-temperature-detector/535) those are known as RTD - Resistance Temperature Detector - and have a tiny sliver of platinum that has a near-linear increase in resistance as temperature increases (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/honeywell-sensing-and-productivity-solutions/HEL-705-U-0-24-00/3073062). A third example is the classic strain gauge, made of a thin plate of patterned metallic material that very slightly changes resistance as it is deformed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strain_gauge). That kind of rough estimation works great for beginners or simple light sensing, but will not cut it when you have to use a strain gauge at the supermarket to measure pounds of veggies: you want it to be very precise, at least within 1% or better! And if you're using a temperature measurement for a scientific process, you may need to get within 1 degree C or better. You can usually improve the quality slightly by having a 1% or 0.1% precision resistor, adding an op-amp gain stage, upgrading your ADC from 8 or 10 bit to 16 or 24 bits - however you will still need to adjust calibration from sensor-to-sensor as well as account for temperature and/or humidity. That's where the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q1w59d7c) comes in! It's designed specifically to make any resistive sensor easy to wire up and interface with SPI, I2C or 1-Wire. You can use Wheatstone half-bridge, full-bridge or divider configuration so it's good for strain gauges or RTDs. There's even analog output! The ZSSC3241 provides measurement value readouts and programming capabilities via an I2C, SPI, or one-wire interface (OWI). Three different operation modes allow optimal development of digital, digital-analog, and analog-output smart sensor modules including wake-up on request, continuous-on/fast-response, and automatic/cyclic sensor measurement operations. Absolute and ratiometric voltage, current-loop, or interrupt analog outputs are supported by the ZSSC3241. The analog output options and digital interface options (for calibration and/or a digital application interface) can be combined. Some great stuff that is included in this chip includes dual PGA stages with up to 300x and 1.8x gain, mV offset shift correction, 12 to 24 bit adjustable ADC resolution - lower resolutions will be faster, adjustable sensor bias current, adjustable temperature compensation, oversampling and averaging, error fault reporting, NVM storage for calibration details, interrupt output on value change, and configurable cyclic measurements with sleep mode (https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/zssc3241-datasheet?r=25417946) - as well as many other configurations that you can check out in the datasheet. While there are many ADCs that one can use to read resistive bridge, we've never seen one with so many knobs for getting the exact right data out without needing a lot of extra massaging....and the pricing is great considering how much more you get than a normal off-the-shelf ADC chip. If you want to get started fast we recommend getting the ZSSC3241 Eval Board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/renesas/ZSSC3241KIT/19234863), particularly since it some with desktop GUI software that can be used to test out the zillions of configuration settings directly with your sensor of choice wired up, without having to go through a ton of re-compilation cycles. Both the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q1w59d7c) and Eval Board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/renesas/ZSSC3241KIT/19234863) are in stock now for immediate shipment from DigiKey. Order today and you'll get those chip in hand by tomorrow afternoon, so that when you are faced with your next resistive sensor project, you'll skip the struggle and go straight to soft, silky, sensor success.

Teddy Ruxpin Hack and Rebuild with Personalization
Full Tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/teddy-ruxpin-rebuild/overview Come Dream with Me Tonight... Teddy Ruxpin is a very cool animatronic talking teddy bear toy, originally from the 1980s and re-released in 2017. Kids absolutely love this guy -- he tells stories, sings songs, and captivates kids' attention for hours. These days, Teddy Ruxpin toys are available on eBay for a fraction of their original cost. The animatronics work great, and there's no other source we've found for a complete animatronic system for such an affordable price. The amazing engineers at Adafruit have figured out how to unpack Teddy's code and upload our own voice files and eye graphics. And since he's such a standard size for a stuffy, his skin is changeable too. I've put my Teddy Ruxpin's insides into a Figment the Dragon stuffy, and he fits almost perfectly. Reviving an ancient 3.5" capacitive touch display breakout 🔍🔧📟
Blimey! We found a bin of these 3.5" 480x320 capacitive touch displays while clearing out some space in the adafruit factory; we totally forgot about them... at the time, we were having some difficulty with getting them working consistently, but we were also not sure if we remember what was up. We will assume they are OK and design a version of our 3.5" TFT breakout https://www.adafruit.com/product/2050 but with support for the captouch chip, which is an FT5336. So far, it mostly works. The FT5336 can report up to 5 touches, and we got that data out. The HX8357D is a bit long in the tooth, but it works over SPI, and we've got running drivers, so folks could still use this display! First round touch display working with ESP32-S3 👉🔴🟢🔵
We showed off some fabulous shaped displays last week - and now we're getting them running! This is a 2.1" 480x480 round display with SPI configuration and an 18-bit RGB interface. Thankfully there is already an Arduino library https://github.com/Lzw655/ESP32_Display_Panel that supports the SPI configuration over port expander stuff on this eval board, plus the touchscreen drivers, too - it saved me a lot of time! The chipset is ST7701, a typical TFT panel driver. You definitely have to initialize the display first with the proper configuration before you can blast RGB data for it to show up, but we were able to noodle that together here https://github.com/ladyada/ESP32_Display_Panel/blob/master/src/lcd/ST7701.cpp#L37, and now it's looking great. Now we know this display and touch setup works, we'll start ordering the displays for us to stock and use. PCB of the Day! The 2.8" TFT Shield revision finally working nicely 🔧📈✅
Whew, it has been a JOURNEY to revise this 2.8" TFT shield https://www.adafruit.com/product/1651, but we finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. By setting up the TSC2007 through a secondary LDO connected to the power-reset chip, we've eliminated the annoying I2C latch-up. So now we have to design a tester. In this case, we will use a Metro RP2040 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5786, quickly becoming my go-to Metro for test jigs since it has many GPIO, a built-in ROM bootloader, and fast peripherals. Here the chip looks for an SD card plugged into a shield, then displays the image with a touch paint interface for testing all functionality fast! We will order these PCBs tonight and finally put this revision behind us. The Great Search: SOIC and DIP Chip Clips!
A "DIP chip clip" sounds like those plastic thingies you put on a bag of Frito Lays' to keep them crispy, but really we're talking about clips that let you snap onto a DIP or SOIC package component to probe or program. They're particularly handy for in-situ analysis or communication, often used for dumping memory chips or logic analyzer uses. We had someone ask us about this particular clip: https://twitter.com/RndMnkIII/status/1616706574252183557 from social media - it says it's from 3M but what's the part number, and are there other sizes available? EYE ON NPI - Nexperia Battery Life Booster ICs
This week's EYE ON NPI is going to give you life, we're looking at Nexperia's Battery Life Booster ICs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics), an interesting solution for dealing with common coin cell batteries as an inexpensive power supply for your small electronic products. The marketing copy for this chip series is pretty eye-catching, with copy that they are "designed to extend the life of a typical lithium coin cell battery by up to an order of magnitude (10x) while also increasing its peak output current capability by up to 25x" (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics) Quite a claim! So let's take a look at what this chip can really do, and why we need it to help with our coin battery-powered designs. Primary Lithium LiMnO2 coin batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/battery-products/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/lithium-manganese-dioxide/90) are hard to beat when you want ultra-dense, low-cost power that is very small. They are the smallest form factor of user-serviceable battery. And the power density of coins - plus their flat shape - makes them great for wearable devices, medical sensors or hearing aids, wireless nodes, anything that is smaller than a finger. With a nominal voltage of 3VDC, and 280 Wh/kg density, they are more dense than a AA alkaline. LiSOCl2 batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/battery-products/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/lithium-thionyl-chloride/90?s=N4IgjCBcoCxgTFUBjKAzAhgGwM4FMAaEAeygG0QBmANgFZKEQBdIgBwBcoQBldgJwCWAOwDmIAL6SgA) are even more dense, with 3.6V nominal and 500 Wh/kg - twice the density of LiMnO2 or Alkaline. Both are non-rechargeable batteries, and while fairly inexpensive when bought in bulk, they can add up in cost when buying from a grocery store, so making sure that they last a long time is essential for a good customer experience. The Energizer Lithium Coin Handbook and Application Manual (https://data.energizer.com/pdfs/lithiumcoin_appman.pdf) is chock full of good advice for folks who want to use a CR2032 or similar coin battery to power their products. It's written with engineers in mind, so a lot of the document covers how the nominal voltage and current, 3V and 240mAh, are deeply affected by shelf life, internal resistance, temperature, and pulse effects. The biggest downside you will see on coin batteries is their relatively high internal resistance - IR. Whereas alkaline and LiPoly batteries have internal resistance well below 1 ohm, the IR of a CR2032 is 9 ohms. So say you want to draw 100mA from a CR2032, even if just for a few millisecs - that 0.1 A turns into a .9V drop across the IR which means what you thought was a 3V power supply is now 2V - too low for your microcontroller or radio to run. Since the power lost across the IR is 2*I*R and R is fixed, it's doubly important that you keep that I low, so that you can minimize IR loss and use as much of that 700mWh stored energy. In our 100mA example, 30% of the battery energy is lost to resistor heat dissipation! That's where Nexperia's Battery Life Booster ICs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/battery-life-booster-ics) come in. They are designed to be used with products that don't need continuous battery drain, that is they have a very low duty cycle where the user presses a button a few times a day or maybe the sensor node transmits only once a minute. During that short transmit or usage cycle, a radio or LCD display may need up to 200mA but its for a very small amount of time and the voltage needs to be stable. The NBM family of chips do this by slowly sipping a small amount of current from the battery, keeping that I low so that the 2*I*R power loss is minimized, then use that constant current to boost a voltage onto a large storage capacitor. The capacitor is chosen to have high capacitance and high voltage for a large total Joule storage capacity. All four variants of the Nexperia NBM family, NBM7100A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM7100ABQX/19109915), NBM5100A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM5100ABQX/19109703), NBM7100B (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM7100BBQX/19110140) and NBM5100B (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/NBM5100BBQX/19109874) are in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment! EYE on NPI: 3M's RP+ VHB™ Tapes
This week's EYE on NPI is going to stick around for a long time: it's 3M's RP+ VHB™ Tapes (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/rp-vhb-tapes) the latest version of the 3M VHB family that has been solving 'how to stick this to that' for over 40 years. Digi-Key stocks all sorts of shapes from strips, rolls and sheets - and all the different thicknesses, temperature gradients and adhesive variations. 3M VHB tapes (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/rp-vhb-tapes) have been used for almost every industry: from architectural, to automotive, to appliances and electronic device both hand-held and large-scale. VHB stands for Very High Bond, so it's used for semi-permanent installations. Chances are you've used it before, think of the last time you had to stick something together and it came with a red plastic liner - our desk's headset hanger came with a 2"x2" square and it's been holding strong for almost 10 years! VHB doesn't require the mix-and-apply messiness of epoxy (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/DP100-CLEAR/8635645), it's way stronger than hot glue (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/TC-TC-Q-GEN-II/17139392) and it won't dry out like plain foam tapes.(https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/4116-1-2-X36YD/5127897). Usage is simple when hand-applying: prep the surface by cleaning first so there's no dirt or dust or oil, dry and abrade if needed - most surfaces do not need abrasion but it can increase the bond strength, apply one side of the tape and apply pressure to 'wet-out' the adhesive into the surface, then remove the thin plastic sheet cover, and press on the other side to the tape. Apply firm pressure again to make sure the adhesive squeezes out. The bond will be at 50% strength after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours, and 100% at 72 hours. You can speed it up by heating to 150 *C / 66 *F for one hour. (https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/1400379O/3m-vhb-tape-design-guide.pdf) In addition to shapes, there are also different thicknesses and firmness to the foam - up to 1.6mm thicker foam will be able to conform to rougher uneven surfaces but now the foam itself has some flexibility. Some VHBs can handle high or low temperatures for outdoor or industrial uses. For electronics and robotics, it can be great for attaching displays, mounting sensors, or making enclosures screw-less. DigiKey stocks a wide range of different lengths and widths of 3M VHB tape (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/3/3m/rp-vhb-tapes) from half-inch (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m-tc/RP-040GF-0-5-X18YD/17197505) to 6" wide (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m-tc/RP-060GF-6-X18YD/17197489) to massive 44 inch wide (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/RP-060GF-44-X36YD/16684748) rolls! There are also sheets that can be cut by hand or with a die (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/3m/RP-040GF-8-5-X11/16684766) all in stock and available for instant shipment. So if you need to stick this-to-that and keep it that way for a long time, order some VHB tape from DigiKey today and you can have it in hand by tomorrow afternoon.

PCB of the Day! ESP32-S3 can drive TTL RGB Displays 🔧🖥️🎨
Coming soon - this is a quick sketch we did of an RGB TTL driver PCB to help us try out all our funky-shaped displays. We reused most of the Matrix Portal S3 PCB, but instead of the RGB matrix connector, we popped on a 40-pin FPC. 16 GPIO go to the RGB pins, then there are 4 control pins for HSYNC, VSYNC, DE, and PIXCLK. Three more pins for touch screen I2C and IRQ. Then a NeoPixel, two buttons, and 3 SPI pins for configuring the screen controller, and we're almost out of pins! An I2C GPIO expander could save us a couple pins at the expense of more complex drivers, but for now, we will make it easy to get the displays running, and we can play silly pin games later. Many interestingly shaped TFT screen samples! 🖥️🔄🎨
For our ICN6211 breakout dev board, we will support classic 40-pin 800x480 displays but what about some funky shapes? A second standard 40-pin connector pinout is used on square, bar, and round displays. Some of these have capacitive touch overlays, and all are RGB666 with different resolutions. The 2.1" and 4" round ones look fantastic, as do the bar displays. We even got a 'half round' display that looks like it would be used for car gauges. There are quite a few steps next, but we're getting there - also, the fun fact is that the Espressif ESP32-S3 has RGB TFT support and can drive these displays! Hmmm... The Great Search: 2x5 0.05" JTAG/SWD connector and cable
On our latest ESP32-S3 board, we added a JTAG connector, as we do on many Adafruit Metro microcontroller boards. This is a 'standard' port for SWD or JTAG that is smaller than the common 2x10 connector. This size is common to many debuggers like the Atmel ICE (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/07/01/the-great-search-programmer-debugger-for-atsamd21-chips-adafruit-digikey-microchipmakes/) or J-Link (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/segger-microcontroller-systems/8-08-00/2175882). The connector is a "jellybean" part, with many possible vendors. Let's find a few options that you can put onto your next dev board for easy debugging! Adafruit BusIO library makes debugging I2C failures fast 🛠️💡🔌
It's not often... but every few months, one of our sensor drivers stops working due to hardware changes. It happened this week with the AHT20 tester - for some reason, it doesn't init anymore! What would typically turn into a multi-hour debugging session is a lot easier since we started using an intermediary library called BusIO for I2C/SPI device interactions https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_BusIO - there is a single #define we enable to turn on print debugging and when we recompile and upload - voila we see full translation details including stops and transfer failures. Turns out the secret calibration command no longer exists on AHTs; a quick PR https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_AHTX0/pull/13 , and we're back in business! The Great Search: SMT Pin Headers
This week we're doing some revision work on our 2.8" resistive TFT screen shield (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1651) to modernize it and also replace some unavailable components. Once neat thing about this shield is that since the display is almost exactly the same size as an Arduino, it uses all SMT headers to plug into the mainboard. SMT headers are useful to avoid a selective or wave-soldering step, or in this case, to avoid contact with a metal plate backing. DigiKey, of course, stocks many sizes of these headers and they're not too expensive! Let's take a look at how to find SMT 'male' pin headers on DigiKey in a variety of sizes - we'll also cover some common mistakes when specifying this kind of part! See the chosen part on DigiKey https://www.digikey.com/short/95nr79qd Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com #electronicsengineering #tftscreens #componentdiscovery #esp32s3linux #i2clatchuprepair #thegreatsearch #smtheaders #adafruitupdates #diyelectronics #digikeycomponents

Metro RP2040 Tester is ready to rock! 🔌💻🧠
We sometimes have 'Coming soon' products in the shop - this is usually when products are done and hand-verified, but the automated tester still needs to be finished. For example, this Metro RP2040 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5786, which we have the tester here. Typically metros are tested on a Raspberry Pi, but in this case, we're using the Pico Brains board https://github.com/adafruit/RP2040-Based-Tester-Brains-PCB to do it, and it's able to do all programming and test in 10 seconds - which means we can offer the Metro RP2040 at a very nice price! Time Lapse Prototype Build! Adafruit PCF8575 I2C 16 GPIO Expander Breakout - STEMMA QT / Qwiic 🔧🔌⚙️
Expand your project possibilities, with the Adafruit PCF8575 GPIO Expander Breakout - an affordable 16 channel I2C expander. GPIO expanders work like this: you have a board with some number of GPIO but not enough for your project - maybe you need more buttons or LEDs. Connect it over I2C and then you can send/receive I2C commands to control the GPIO pins to write and read them. It's going to be slower than direct GPIO access, but maybe that doesn't matter if it takes a millisecond instead of a microsecond. You only need the two I2C pins, and you can even share the I2C port with other sensors and devices. Heck, you can even add more expanders for massive I/O control! https://www.adafruit.com/product/5611 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #opensource #opensourcehardware #PCF8575 #timelapse electronicsengineering #prototypebuild #gpioexpander #i2c #stemmaqt #diyprojects #makersgonnamake #hardwarehacks #affordabletech #expandableio

Ortho-Keys tester has a plastic pal who's fun to be with ⌨️🔑💡
We were tasked with fixing an older tester for our 5x6 ortho-key break-apart board https://www.adafruit.com/product/5157 . This board has many test points to verify because we have 30 total keys, and each key has the switch contacts and the Neopixel. Pressing down to touch all the Pogo pads simultaneously can be a challenge! We use both standoffs for the mounting hole alignment and a big laser-cut plastic plate that provides even pressure. When all the LEDs go green, you know it's all working! Next, we hand this back to the test-prep leads, which will be put back into production. 2.8" TFT touchscreen revision with TSC2007 🛠️🖥️🚀
We're finally redoing our 2.8" resistive touch screen shield https://www.adafruit.com/product/1651, which has been out of stock for a looooong time due to parts shortages and then TFT pricing nuttiness. This time, we're revising it to use the TSC2007 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5423 and testing it against the new Metro ESP32-S3 prototypes. We've wired the IRQ pin-up, and the touchscreen responsiveness is excellent. One nice thing about using I2C is that we don't have to share the SPI port, so if you're using something like LVGL, which does TFT drawing or touch screen reading in an interrupt, there's less risk of contention.
