📻 🍋 🪶 RadioFruit Feathers prep for takeoff! 🚀 Tested w/ RP2040 brains board 🧠📡

To test our upcoming RFM Feathers, we use our RP2040 tester brains board, and load in the GPIO test code which checks the analog and digital pins to verify there's no short circuits - then does a ping-pong test with a second radio breakout of matching type and frequency. so the brains board not only programs but also help perform the test by replying to packet messages. then we verify the RSSI is within range too, so that folks can hit the ground running with this powerful new dev board! Circuit Playground 32u4 Tester is pico-ified!

With many chips finally coming back into stock, we're doing a run of some boards we haven't manufactured in quite a bit! for example this Circuit Playground Classic (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3000), our original Circuit Playground board, is based on the ATmega32u4. since its been a few years we pulled out the tester kit and noticed that only one of the three testers was working. the tester was originally designed to use an Arduino M0 Pro (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/getting-started-guides/ArduinoM0Pro) which was a SAMD21 board with a second USB serial port for programming & debug. but...that board is discontinued! so we might as well 'pico-ify' it by converting the tester to use our RP2040 Tester Brains (https://github.com/adafruit/RP2040-Based-Tester-Brains-PCB) which is combined with our standalone AVR Programming (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_AVRProg) library to perform all the firmware burning, USB enumeration, and testing. The Great Search: NuvoTon audio record & playback chips

While doing a teardown of a toy cactus that mimics people (https://www.google.com/search?q=mimic+cactus) by recording & replaying the last few seconds of audio, we were reminded of ISD audio chips. These record-and-playback chips have been around for decades and are a favorite with makers and engineers who want to quickly add audio prompt playback without big processing capability. These chips don't require battery backup or a flash memory chip, they keep the audio clips stored internally in a compressed format. Originally these were popularized in use cases like "digital greeting cards" that you could record a message onto. Despite being quite old, they're still used a lot and are very simple and often available in large packages, so for many projects they're still the easiest way to do add simple sound effects or audio messages. Digi-Key has a wide range of ISD audio chips available for purchase, let's look at the large range and pick a good one to start with. See the chosen chip on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/pbjf0zrh

EYE on NPI: Nordic Semiconductor's NRF7002 Companion IC

This week's EYE ON NPI is your best buddy for broadband, it's Nordic Semiconductor's NRF7002 Companion IC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf7002-companion-ic), a wireless add-on chipset designed for the Nordic Semi nRF52 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-ics/879?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHIHsBOATAlgYwAQGUCmAtmlgHYBKAYgKwQC6AvkA) and nRF53 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-ics/879?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHYHsBOATAlgYwARyQMwFYBmEAXQF8g) ARM+Bluetooth and nRF91 ARM+Cellular (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-ics/879?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHIHsBOATAlgYwAQGUCmAtmlgHYBKAYgJwCMIAugL5A) to act as a WiFi peripheral. With the addition of the nRF7 series, Nordic now covers the three most popular wireless transports: Bluetooth LE, LTE Cellular, and WiFi! This is a pretty big deal, because it's their first foray into WiFi technology, so we expect that there will be more integration in the future. The nRF7002 is a standalone chip, which requires only a few passives and an antenna, that performs the low-level interfacing to communicate with WiFi networks. Data is transferred back and forth between the nRF7 and host processor using SPI or QSPI - for higher speeds!. At this time, it seems like the driver is only available via the Nordic SDK and using Zephyr RTOS (https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/tree/main/drivers/wifi/nrf700x) - both of which would be good options because the WiFi stack lives on the host chip which means an SSL implementation which can require significant RAM and Flash. You'll also need to store the chip patch firmware blob and transfer it over SPI on boot - again requiring storage or flash memory. So why use this chip instead of an integrated WiFi core? Well, one thing is you may want to connect to 5GHz networks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels#5_GHz_(802.11a/h/j/n/ac/ax)), which the nRF7002 supports in addition to 2.4GHz, and you may need a processor with specific peripherals or quantity of GPIO or speed, or you're already using the nRF53 or nRF91 chipset - that's when the nRF7002 is going to shine. Nordic is also known for really good and complete SDK's for nicely documented and supported peripherals with excellent low-power numbers. For a fast start, grab the NRF7002-DK eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF7002-DK/17748188) that you can pick up with has an nRF53, JLink interface, antenna ports, and other accessories for quick bringup of a dual-BLE-WiFi design. It's still pretty early, but we can expect to see tinned modules come out into the market soon, for example Fanstel products are stocked at Digi-Key (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-transceiver-modules-and-modems/872?s=N4IgTCBcDaIGYEMB2BnALgUwDYgLoF8g) and it looks like they're working on a few nRF7002 options (https://www.fanstel.com/nrf7002wifi6module). For software, it's also pretty early since this is a new chip, but there's lots of examples in the nRF SDK (https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/tree/main/drivers/wifi/nrf700x) and also example code on the Nordic developer blog for MQTT connection (https://github.com/AliNordic/mqtt_over_wifi_nrf7002DK) and friend-of-the-fruit Golioth has a quickstart on how to use the nRF7002 to connect to their cloud for pub-sub and RPC currying. (https://forum.golioth.io/t/nordics-brand-new-nrf7002-wi-fi-chip-already-works-with-golioth/166). You can also use Nordic's free apps for provisioning over BLE or Cellular (https://www.nordicsemi.com/products/development%20tools/nrf%20wi-fi%20provisioner) If you want to add the nRF7002 to your design, now's the time to check it out because Digi-Key has lots of the Nordic nRF7002 in stock (https://www.digikey.com/short/48b0317m) right now for immediate shipment! Order today to get full WiFi 6 support into your next core design by tomorrow afternoon, with a powerful front-end chip that supports dual bands and antenna co-existence.

The Great Search: LoRa 915MHz ISM band antenna

On last week's The Great Search (https://youtu.be/cB32kaMpqI0), we wanted to find a way to connect a whip-style antenna to our 915 MHz ISM Band Feather boards with either RFM69 or LoRa modules. We started by finding uFL to SMA adapter cables, with great success. Now we get onto the antenna part! to do range testing, lets get some nice big 915 MHz antennas with SMA connectors and with tiltable angle so that we can send and receive data from miles away! Digi-Key stocks thousands of antennas, but we can narrow down our search to one that fits our requirements, while also learning about gain and VSWR ratings. feather radiofruit prototypes showed up

these are two RP2040 'bones' boards that have an RFM69 900MHz module soldered in the empty spot, good for making basic wireless networks that have support for addressing and packeted data transmission. they can be transmitters or receivers, here both have the same code on them and when we press the user button on one feather, the opposite ones displays a message on the OLED with the RSSI. this makes it easy for me to verify the antenna quality. theres also a uFL antenna spot so we can connect big antennas using a uFL to SMA adapter - we covered finding these adapters on the Great Search this week! next up we will try RFM9x LoRa modules, those can run a LoRaWAN stack on the roomy RP2040 chip. We just wired up this EPD (eInk / ePaper Display) Feather and it works great! it's our "RP2040 Bones" board with standard 24-pin FPC eInk connector and support circuitry in the empty spot. with the 8 GPIO we've wired up a separate SPI port, 4 control pins, and then set up the NeoPixel to have a separate power pin so it will work better for low power usage. to be clear, the RP2040 isn't really designed for super low power usage, but every lil bit counts! we're going to send some over to tannewt next, so he can maybe test out the 7-color ACeP displays that were recently added to circuitpython and make sure they work with the component selection :) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #eink #epaper

🎉 💻🍎✨ 20th Anniversary Macintosh (TAM)

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh - Limited-edition Apple computer (1997) The Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh (or "TAM") is a limited-edition personal computer released in 1997 to mark Apple's 20th birthday. The TAM was announced almost 20 years to the day after Jobs and Wozniak incorporated the company. The TAM featured a 250 MHz PowerPC 603ev processor and 12.1" active matrix LCD powered by an ATI 3D Rage II video chipset with 2 MB of VRAM capable of displaying up to 16-bit color at either 800x600 or 640x480 pixels. It had a vertically mounted 4x SCSI CD-ROM and an Apple floppy SuperDrive, a 2 GB ATA hard drive, a TV/FM tuner, an S-Video input card, and a custom-made Bose sound system including two "Jewel" speakers and a subwoofer built into the externally located power supply "base unit". A thick "umbilical" cable connects the base unit to the head unit, supplying both power, and communications for the subwoofer. This one was a lot of fun to photo, put together, and check out the video - rare footage! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twentieth_Anniversary_Macintosh https://support.apple.com/kb/SP408?locale=en_US #Marchintosh #apple #history

Apple QuickTake 150 (1995)

📸 Apple's QuickTake 150 (1995 - QuickTake 150 kit with case, cable, booster pack, and close-up lens accessories. Apple improved the file compression technology and released the QuickTake 150 in April 1995, replacing the 100. The 150 uses the same hardware as the 100, and the improved compression enabled the QuickTake 150 to capture 16 best-quality or 32 standard-quality images, with either quality level now stored at the full resolution of 640×480 in the 1MB of built-in storage. At the same time, Kodak introduced its DC40, which used a similar design and hardware as the QuickTake 150, but captured images at an increased resolution to a larger internal storage. The QuickTake 150 sensor was the same as used in the DC40, but masked to a lower resolution; the DC40 used the entire sensor instead. The QuickTake 150 kit also included PhotoFlash software (for Macintosh) or PhotoNow! (for Windows) and a separate close-up lens that changed the focus range to 10 to 14 inches (25 to 36 cm) and diffused the flash appropriately. Apple also offered several different accessories for the QuickTake 150, including a travel case, AC adapter, battery booster pack (using 8×AA batteries), and a connection kit for Microsoft Windows. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_QuickTake#QuickTake_150 #marchintosh #apple #photography Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI: CUI Devices DIN Rail Terminal Block Connectors

This week's EYE ON NPI is a DIN rail accessory that is great looking -- not to be confused with the Mandalorian Din Djarin (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Din_Djarin) -- it's CUI Devices DIN Rail Terminal Block Connectors! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cui-devices/din-rail-terminal-block-connectors) They're a stackable set of feed-through or ground-type termination blocks that are slim and easy to snap onto any standard DIN rail for making quick up-to-4-contact distributions or connections to the grounding rail. DIN rails (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_rail) are a standardized mounting rail that is popular in electrical, server and industrial situations. By having one size rail that everyone agrees on, it's easy to snap-mount on any equipment that needs to be wall or cabinet mounted, without having to drill holes in walls or use 2x4 wood strips that are not rated for weight bearing. DIN rails are inexpensive, available in steel or aluminum, and pre-cut to any length you need - Digi-Key has tons in stock (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/din-rail-channel/580) There are slots for easy mounting to cabinets or walls, that part isn't standardized, so check the specs for the railing you're ordering to make sure it's easy to mount. However, once that's done, you can snap various DIN rail holders and accessories (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgTCBcDaICYEsB2ACATgQwQGxAXQF8g) on very easily. Back to the topic at hand - CUI makes a variety of DIN Rail Terminal Blocks (https://www.digikey.com/short/2rdpm8n0) that snap into a standard rail, each slim device is a single terminal distribution for one contact. They are available in a few different sizes, for example the TBDR-12-25 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-devices/TBDR-12-25-BK/17628393) is 46mm x 68mm and can handle 26 to 12 AWG. The TBDR-06-15 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-devices/TBDR-06-15-GY/17628401) on the other hand is 30 mm x 48mm and goes down to 14 AWG at the max thickness, and the TBDR-08-25 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-devices/TBDR-08-25-GY/17628397) is 35mm x 68mm. Basically, there's a wide range of sizes and configuration that you can mix and match to stack up your customized enclosure needs. These are designed to be able to handle high currents and voltages for power distribution, with CE and UL markings and support for up to 500V and 22A, but of course will also do nicely for data transfer or motor control. They're ideal for your next project where tidy and clean wiring is required. There are 18 different sizes/colors of the CUI DIN Rail Terminal Blocks (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cui-devices/din-rail-terminal-block-connectors) available and all are in stock at Digi-Key right now. Don't forget to also pick up some of the 8 different 'end cap' pieces you can use to protect the last block in a stack. Since we have to feature one product in particular, we'll go with the TBDR-12-25-BK (https://www.digikey.com/short/2rdpm8n0) - all are great but we dig the bi-layer black look of this terminal block - it's also available in gray (https://www.digikey.com/short/vcz3v2r4) but whatever ones you pick, they'll ship instantly from Digi-Key and you'll have them in your hands as early as tomorrow afternoon!

More Test Brains Pico-ification - Product 5303 this time!

We continue our quest to Pico-ify all our testers, moving away from Teensy 3.6 (they're unavailable) or Raspberry Pi's (good but have the overhead and brittleness of a full Linux computer). This time we're doing the 5303 ESP32-S2 Feather with BME280 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5303) which can run through the full program and test in about 20 seconds. It's going to be slow and steady as we redo them all, but it feels great to invest in our test suite and make it easier and faster for our team to get these boards up and running! The Great Search: uFL to SMA cables

Our latest RP2040 Board has an RFM69 or LoRa radio module on it, and to make it easy for folks to use external antennas for good range, we added a uFL connector (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/11/30/the-great-search-ufl-connector-thegreatsearch-digikey-adafruit-rf-wifi-digikey-adafruit/). These common RF antenna connectors are good for up to 6GHz or so, and are nearly universal. However, for larger antennas such as those for 433MHz or 900MHz signals, we may want to have a large stick antenna which is panel mounted. For those situations we'll want to connect a standard SMA-type antenna! SMA connectors can also be on a PCB but they're pretty big and are not SMT so it's common to use a uFL to SMA adapter cable. Where to get those? Why, Digi-Key, of course! INOYDA - RP2040 with DVI output first output test

Our first Feather 'bones' board prototype is ready for testing! This is RP2040 with 8MB Flash, QT, USB C, Lipoly and the standard Feather pinout ... and at the other end a DVI connector that will work with any HDMI monitor or 'sink'! We tested that we can detect and read the sink's EDID EEPROM, the HPD (hot-plug detect) pin goes high when connected, and that we can generate both 640x480 and 800x480. Those are generated in the PicoDVI Arduino library (https://github.com/adafruit/PicoDVI) we have as pixel-doubled 320x240 or 400x240 so we have a full framebuffer in RAM that we can instantly display on output. It's basically like having an Adafruit GFX display but instead of to an OLED or TFT its a full color HDMI monitor! Kudos to PaintYourDragon for the wrangling, this works beautifully and easily with automatic overclocking. What would you want to display on an HDMI monitor using an RP2040 chip? Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/chinese-dragon-puppet-with-motion-reactive-flame-effect/overview Make a Chinese Dragon puppet with a dramatic flame LED effect. The lights are motion-reactive so he lights up when you shake him. This project uses an Adafruit Circuit Playground Express with a built-in motion sensor and NeoPixel LED lights. The code is written in Microsoft MakeCode, an easy-to-use drag and drop code editor. (Or maybe in this case, a dragon-drop code editor.) This is an easy beginner-level project that involves a little bit of soldering. You can download our code sample, or learn to make your own flame effects. This is a fantastic project to do with kids. EYE on NPI: Menda/EasyBraid WickGun Dispenser and Cassettes EYEonNPI DigiKey @DigiKey @adafruit

This week's EYE ON NPI has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, it's the latest installment of the Wick franchise - and dontchaknowit - this movie is all about making rework fast and easy with the Menda/EasyBraid WickGun Dispenser (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/easy-braid/wickgun-dispenser), which will let you dispense de-soldering braid with the same ease and skill that our famous assassin dispenses with the bad guys! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSM_nz6gKOI) Solder wick is awesome for reworking any printed circuit boards. It's made of fine copper braid that often has flux embedded in it, and it 'wicks' up solder cleanly and easily. It's great for SMT, especially bridging on chips pins, and also is helpful for cleaning up through hole parts. Digi-Key has some great tutorials on soldering, including this one that covers fluxing, rework, wick and headers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJH7VLGJ4fs), one from Becky Stern with lots of wire-soldering details (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS4v2hIFp9I) and a video from Shawn Hymel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Rc1s6EpSI) on QFN soldering and rework with hot air. Soldering is a bit of a messy process, especially for beginners, and it's easy to make mistakes where there's too much solder. That's where reworking techniques come in! It's dangerous to operate electronics with short circuits, as somehow it always turns out that the short is connecting some high voltage pin to a sensitive input. For through hole components, we always like to start off with a de-soldering pump, also known as a "solder sucker" (https://www.digikey.com/short/bvrwtzjv). Pumps are great for removing large quantities of solder, but are a 'big hammer' - they're not good for delicate tasks and also because they use the internal suction to pull solder away from the PCB, they're not good for removing the last solder from a through hole pad where the component has been removed because air just flows around the solder. (https://learn.adafruit.com/diet-raspberry-pi) Once you've got the majority of solder removed, use wick to clean it up. Do this by placing the wick over the area with solder, then pressing the widest part of the soldering iron tip against the wick to heat it up and cause the solder to flow into the wick. Finally, cut off the used wick! OK, not too hard - but suffers from requiring both hands which means putting down the iron while you yank some more wick out, then set it up, picking up the iron, doing the actual wicking, then putting down the iron again to cut the used parts. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDdgsjQDsXQ) If you're doing a lot of rework, the Menda/EasyBraid WickGun Dispenser (https://www.digikey.com/short/c4hztd83) makes this task easy by making the dispensing, positioning and cutting a one-handed task. The WickGun takes reels of braid of any width. Once loaded, turn the dial to dispense wick until you have a nice tail. Use the end of the wick against the spot you're reworking, and once done, press the trigger to snip off the used braid: easy-peasy-lemon squeezy! (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/wFx3pvNqeFk) The wicks themselves come with a variety of different solder widths and styles: from lead-free to no-clean and #1 to #5 widths with replacement cassettes available from Digi-Key as well. (https://www.digikey.com/short/vmq4q9vp) And Menda/EasyBraid WickGun Dispensers and Cassettes (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/easy-braid/wickgun-dispenser) are in stock for immediate shipment from Digi-Key, so you can order today and double the speed of your reworking by tomorrow afternoon.
