Desk of Ladyada - TFT's Galore! This week at Ladyada's desk, we focused on a big TFT revision sweep - we have a new TFT supplier that can get us back to the prices we used to get. In addition to the existing TFTs we use, we also got a bunch of samples of new displays such as ones with capacitive touch. While we're at it, we're also redesigning our TFT breakouts to have EYESPI connectors, which will make testing / usage a lot easier. This week's EYE ON NPI has an EYE TO THE SKY, it's a new MAX-M10 series of ultra-low-power GPS modules from u-blox (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/u/u-blox/max-m10-series). u-blox is famous for their high quality GPS modules, they've been making them for about 20 years and they've never stopped iterating on their trusted designs. This new generation of modules, the MAX-M10 series, comes in two flavors for cost vs tracking-sensitivity optimization. The MAX-M10 modules are the same footprint, and both support the four active or soon-to-be-active GNSS constellations: GPS (USA-launched satellite system), GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (Europe) and BeiDou (China) The MAX-M10 is available in S series (https://www.digikey.com/short/r5j974z0) and M series varieties (https://www.digikey.com/short/zp5v73zm). The MAX-M10S-00B S series has a temperature compensated oscillator (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_oscillator#Temperature) a.k.a TCXO for the frequency tuning, so you'll get better sensitivity and tracking: -167dBm sensitivity compared to the M series' -164dBm, but at higher current draw and pricing. The MAX-M10M-00B M series has a regular crystal a.k.a XTAL, for lower cost and power usage, but will take longer to get initial fix and won't have as good sensitivity. Also, the M series can run 1.8-5.5V, where as the S series is 1.8-3.3V max and has a SAW filter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_(signal_processing)#SAW_filters) and LNA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-noise_amplifier). Both modules have UART and I2C support, which is great news because so many microcomputers and 'controllers do not have lots of spare UARTs. I2C has a built in buffer and you can query the current size and then read bytes out of it. Do note that I2C has clock stretching so you will need to either slow down the baud rate or verify your controller can handle the stretching. For UART mode, default baud rate is 9600 but can be configured higher. Unlike some basic all-in-one modules, the MAX M10s require an external antenna. You can use either passive (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2461) or active antennas (https://www.adafruit.com/product/960), active antenna only needs a few passive components. If you want to really have a fancy setup, you can enable an antenna supervisor circuit which can tell you if the antenna is connected, shorted, or even open. A few months ago, we were forced to find a replacement for the FAN5333 constant-current LED driver (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/08/02/the-great-search-white-led-strand-backlight-constant-current-driver-fan5333-replacement-thegreatsearch-digikey-adafruit/). Well, now we have to find a replacement for its sister - the fixed voltage boost converter FAN5331 (https://www.digikey.com/short/bzrmmh08) which has gone "end of life" on us. A real tragedy: we absolutely loved this simple SOT-23-5 chip which could take 3-5VDC in and give up to 20V out with a built in 1A switch, only a small inductor and diode needed! We use this for many of our OLED displays and other devices that need a bias voltage of 12-18VDC. Let's see if we can locate a pin-compatible, functionally-similar equivalent that's in stock. We designed a bunch of boards this week, let's take a look at what got spun up: With Si5351's back in stock and available, we have QTified the breakout board for this popular clock generator. We're also QTifying the ADT7410 and EYESPIifying the 1.8" and 1.54" TFTs. The TPS61040 is a fair replacement for the FAN5333, so there's a mini breakout for that The PiCowbell proto has been patiently awaiting me to look up the default I2C pins for the Pico in Arduino so we could make a rev B with stemma QT port in addition to an SMT right-angle switch Finally, a customer with an IR LED question prompted us to design a breakout board that makes it easy to add high-powered IR LEDs without soldering.
