EYE on NPI: EnOcean EDK350/EDK350U Developer Kits
This week's EYE ON NPI is a self-starting go-getter, it's the EDK350/EDK350U Developer Kits from EnOcean (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/enocean/edk350-and-edk350u-developer-kits) - containing everything you need to get started with energy-harvesting / self-powered sensors. These kits are a great way to explore and understand the EnOcean series of solar & mechanical energy-harvesting switches and sensors. As engineers, we're often tasked with 'smartening up' existing structures: whether that's machinery, agriculture, buildings, cars, appliances, etc. The last few decades have given us ultra-cheap sensors and radios - which means we are able to gather data from a wide area and store it centrally, the Internet of Things! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_things) That means just about every project and product you will work on is going to have sensors, data storage and wireless - but with great technology comes great complexity: you now have to worry about shuffling that sensor data around, and nothing eats up batteries like constantly having to wake up and transmit radio data. In fact, a lot of the really tough engineering with sensor networks is not in picking the radio or sensor but in how to keep the battery lasting as long as possible. Particularly since folks like products with small, rechargeable batteries - but they don't like having to constantly plug them in. Moreover it's really hard to let people know when something needs to be recharged - there's the problem of "well we need power to blink an LED or sound a buzzer which will drain the power even faster - but if we blink or buzz too rarely it may not be caught in time to change out the battery before it dies". Also known as the 'smoke detector issue' - Americans kind of solved this by starting a campaign to check smoke detector batteries on every daylight savings change (https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/Staying-safe/Safety-equipment/Smoke-alarms/Changing-clocks-and-batteries). Great for individual households with maybe 3 or 4 smoke detectors - not great if you have dozens or hundreds of light switches or soil moisture sensors. EnOcean solved this in a typically engineer-y fashion: what if, instead of having batteries which add cost, maintenance and life-cycle management...we just didn't? Instead, their devices use energy harvesting (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJIlG-KbFzE), which means that - in theory - there is no installation or maintenance costs at all. Once installed, it will forever sip power from motion or ambient light until there's enough power for a transmission. EnOcean even has their own low power 900/868MHz radio modules with integrated 8051's that are specifically designed for quick startup, sensing, transmission and power down. The most famous is their ECO200 mechanical energy harvesting switch, (https://www.enocean.com/en/product/eco-200/) which also made it into the Philips Hue wireless lighting system (https://meethue.co/hacks/convert-hue-tap-to-a-light-switch/), a great fit since the whole system is wireless, and there's a natural inclination to associate pressing a button with changing the light settings. In addition to the classic mechanically-powered switches, there's also a series of micro-solar powered sensors, (https://www.enocean.com/en/product-category/self-powered-sensors/) good when you need to have a slow but continuous measurement of environment. Tuck these near a fluorescent light fixture and you could sip enough power to send data once every few hours or per day - no wiring or installation required. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkynD9FOVxY) If this technology is something you want to look into integrating, you can get started with the EnOcean EDK350/EDK350U Developer Kit, (https://www.digikey.com/short/77dn99q8) a chocolate box assortment containing one of each of EnOcean's sensors and switches. You get radios, USB sticks, mechanical and solar harvesters! Available in both 900MHz for Americans, or 868MHz for Europe / Asia. And both kits are in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key! (https://www.digikey.com/short/77dn99q8) Order today and you will be energy harvesting by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: Very Low Dropout 1A Schottky Diode (MBR120VL replacement)
We use lots of Schottky diodes in our products for power supply circuits. Traditionally we've used the On Semi MBR120VLSFT1G (https://www.digikey.com/short/rd25c3rt) which is 20V forward, 1A current, SOD-123 package, and a slim 340mV forward drop at 1A. You'll be shocked (or is it...Schottk'd?) to hear that it's unobtanium, with a 75 week lead time. We looked at some other parts in the MBR120 base product number family (https://www.digikey.com/short/vjr347bp) but they're also out of stock! However, we will not be deterred - let's use our Great Search Skills to find a good drop-in replacement diode at Digi-Key with matching-or-better specifications! Desk of Ladyada - Use ANY font in EagleCAD with Pinguin
Desk of Ladyada - Use ANY font in EagleCAD with Pinguin We've been doing a ton of revisions lately and as we're re-spinning boards we had a bit of an itch to make some pretty silkscreens. Normally the way nice silks are done at adafruit is we ask PaintYourDragon to do a custom silkscreen after the PCB is laid out. This of course results in the gorgeous designs for the MacroPad and Monster M4sk...but for lil breakouts it's a ton of work to export/design/re-import the top and bottom silks. And it's also hard to tweak the design. So we asked 'drag0n to come up with some automated way to change the font from a servicable-vector-y font. A week later and Pinguin is born, a python script that will swap any font for you, automagically, and even do a pretty darn good job of keeping the size the same. Let's check it out! EYE on NPI: ST Micro's AIS25BA 3-Axis Accelerometer
This week's EYE ON NPI has great vibes, it's ST Micro's AIS25BA 3-Axis Accelerometer (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/ais25ba-3-axis-accelerometer) a unique take on the classic tripe-axis motion sensor where data is streamed out with a TDM interface rather than I2C or SPI! We've never seen this kind of sensor but the idea behind its use case is kinda cool and is a great demonstration of using sensor fusion to cancel out or extract data from two 'directions'. Usually accelerometers we've covered on NPI before are used for tilt or motion sensing, detecting if something is falling or was struck. Another good use for this common sensor is vibration detection. You need very fast sensor reading but any vibration can be detected and sensed as motion and then integrated for displacement. That's pretty much what a microphone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphone) does as well, right? It takes vibrations in the air, then the displacement is converted to a capacitive measurement via MEMS (https://www.digikey.com/short/tt7qnddr) or current/voltage measurement via electret (https://www.digikey.com/short/9vdczd9n). So, what if in addition to measuring the air movement with the microphone, we also got to measure the vibration of a surface with an accelerometer? Dense surfaces will be better at low frequency measurements, and the microphone element will be better at high frequency. With a little filter work, we can combine these two data streams so that we get clear audio without the motion or air noise that often adds crackling, or overwhelms the analog front end. (https://www.st.com/resource/en/flyer/fllis25ba0218_lr.pdf) ST Micro's AIS25BA 3-Axis Accelerometer (https://www.digikey.com/short/3zrr4c8b) is the automotive-qualified version of the LIS25BA (https://www.digikey.com/short/c9bt59c0) but both function basically the same so choose whichever is best for your application. In both sensors, the configuration and test is still done over I2C - setting gains, offset, self-test, etc. Then data is streamed over a TDM audio-interface so it can be quickly funneled into a DSP or microcomputer that performs the high/low-pass filtering and merging. As demo'd by an ST engineer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi4NenlnR-k), the sound quality is greatly improved, kinda like a reverse-noise-cancelling-headphone. Particularly as so many more devices like cars are becoming voice-controlled to allow for advanced uses, and avoid mechanical components that can wear out or get dirty, having good clean audio input (https://www.st.com/resource/en/user_manual/um2824-getting-started-with-the-stm32cube-function-pack-for-acoustic-echo-cancellation-stmicroelectronics.pdf) is key to having a UX that is great versus one that is annoying to use. There's even a driver for the I2C side of things over on GitHub to get you started quickly. (https://github.com/STMicroelectronics/ais25ba-pid.git) Best of all, STMicroelectronics' AIS25BA 3-Axis Accelerometer (https://www.digikey.com/short/3zrr4c8b) is in stock now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment! Order today and your sensors will be shipped immediately so you can be noise-cancelling like a pro by tomorrow morning.

The Great Search – Replacement SPI FRAM
We think FRAM chips are the most underrated storage chips engineers can use - they're excellent for datalogging! They also solve the biggest frustration when people try to stream data to EEPROM, SD card or Flash memory: erase times for blocks can stretch to hundreds of milliseconds, and you often need to write a whole block at a time. SRAM is nice but will erase itself when power is lost. If you need to burst-write data to a reliable storage medium that is OK with having power cut - FRAM is great. We have a few FRAM breakouts (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=fram&sort=BestMatch) but we've found some chips are discontinued/obsolete (https://www.digikey.com/short/wc94tmd2). Let's see what options we have for replacements - a good lesson in how to read and understand PCNs. CircuitPython WiFi support on the Raspberry Pi Pico W - part deux
Last time we checked in on the PicoW CircuitPy progress, we saw the onboard LED blinking - basically proving that the SPI transport and firmware upload was working. This round, we're starting to see the beginnings of integration support, with the ability to read the MAC address, scan for accessible SSIDs, and connect to get an IP address! there's still a lot more to do, like DNS support, LWIP integration and a TLS stack, so it's great to see progress 🥧🐮 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EZ Link Bluefruit with ESP32 Arduino Upload Test
we're trying to revive the old EZ-Link Bluefruit design from many years ago - originally done with a CSR chipset that became very hard for us to get. ESP32 is a lot easier and the original chip has BT classic support - required for BT SPP which is what we're using. This test uses the Arduino IDE, we are uploading code from the IDE 'transparently' to the COM port which the operating system makes when you pair to a BT SPP profile device. Since we pass the baud rate and control lines, we're able to auto-reset and transmit data as if it were connected with a USB cable! here, we're uploading a NeoPixel test sketch and it seems to be working Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Desk of Ladyada - Samples Sunday & Replacement SPI FRAM
We got a whole mess of interesting mechanical samples - from fancy-pants breadboards to encoders and joysticks. We're also doing a lil bit of refactoring of hardware designs, since it was time to re-order 1.8" TFT breakout PCBs we decided to give up a glow-up to add an EYESPI port. Also we've started the tester for the ESP32 ItsyBitsy. EYE on NPI: TDK WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil for Wireless Charging
This week's EYE ON NPI is all about us giving you the skinny on an ultra-thin way to add wireless charging to your next design - it's TDK's WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil for Wireless Charging! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/tdk/ultrathin-pattern-coil-for-wireless-charging) This coil is less than a mm thick, and is designed to work with any and all Qi charging chips so you can add wireless charging without having to also design and manufacture a charging plate. If you have a modern smart phone, you may have noticed that it comes with built in wireless charging capability called 'Qi charging.' Qi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi_%28inductive_power_standard%29) is a trademark name for a thin and smart inductive charging system. Many large gadget companies have standardized on Qi, which means it's easy to find a charging dish - there's even charging plates in many cafe's or waiting rooms. Wireless charging has a few really good benefits (and one or two downsides). Most importantly, it's extremely convenient. Folks are more likely to forgive a design with a smaller battery / battery-life if charging can be done as easily as placing it on a table overnight. Secondly, it allows for a more water-proof design - handy for things like watches and headphones that may use BLE for data transfer. Normally you'd still need to plug in to charge, but now there's no need at all for a USB port! In addition, you get a lot less wear on the power connector, since every insertion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#Durability) adds the chance that the connector will get something jammed inside, or a contact worn out, or strain on the connector mechanics that lifts it off the PCB. Downsides of Wireless Charging is that, yes it adds some cost because you need a Qi chip and the matching antenna, and they both take up space in the build as well. Qi is also traditionally 5W which is good, but relies on having a good inductive link between the base and the device. Before Qi, you also had to design both sides of the link, (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1407) which was often not worth the extra effort when time-to-market is so important. Now with Qi you can use any off-the-shelf charging plate or transmitter module (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/2162/6827104). And this antenna is so thin you can easily fit it between your PCB assembly and the plastic enclosure. You might be surprised how easy it is to add Qi standard wireless charging these days, and with the TDK's WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil (https://www.digikey.com/short/z1r3jtrh) you don't have to make a ton of room. Add in a Qi wireless charging receiver chip (https://www.digikey.com/short/db3rp415) and you can have a magical user experience with no cables. Best of all, the TDK pattern coil (https://www.digikey.com/short/z1r3jtrh) is in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment - order today and you can be charging by tomorrow afternoon!

The Great Search – ESP32 modules in all Shapes and Sizes!
This week's great search is a two-fer as we look for small classic ESP32 modules! Traditionally we've used the big ESP32-WROOM https://www.digikey.com/short/fftf34vt such as seen in the HUZZAH Feather https://www.adafruit.com/product/3405 , OR we've used the u-blox NINA W10 https://www.digikey.com/short/n2d0cwn5 such as on the Airlift Bitsy https://www.adafruit.com/product/4363. We just got notice that the NINA is Last Time Buy, so it's time to find a replacement for AirLift. Likewise, we designed the EZ-Link with ESP32 Pico Modules https://www.digikey.com/short/m853jv84 but perhaps it's a little overkill since we don't need so much Flash and PSRAM? Let's use Digi-Key plus the Espressif part selector https://products.espressif.com/ to find some good alternatives. Desk of Ladyada - Goin' With the Flow Control
This week on the Desk of Ladyada it's been a prototyping bonanza with a lot of work on testers and new designs. First up we wanted to wrap the tester for the CH9102F but found that part of our test is to check the DTR/DTS RTS/CTS pains and the Linux kernel driver for the CH343 family did not have CTS working! Thankfully we found an out-of-tree driver https://github.com/SoldierJazz/ch343ser_linux.git that does the job and allows us to perform the test procedure. Next up we put together prototypes for the EZ-Link ESP32 and tried out some code, like the CH9102F, there were some flow control issues to work out in the BT SPP stack but it works! Finally we test out the latest CircuitPython PicoW WiFi stack work, where there is slow-n-steady progress. The Great Search - ESP32 modules in all Shapes and Sizes! https://www.digikey.com/short/dpd0wdnq This week's great search is a two-fer as we look for small classic ESP32 modules! Traditionally we've used the big ESP32-WROOM https://www.digikey.com/short/fftf34vt such as seen in the HUZZAH Feather https://www.adafruit.com/product/3405 , OR we've used the u-blox NINA W10 https://www.digikey.com/short/n2d0cwn5 such as on the Airlift Bitsy https://www.adafruit.com/product/4363 .
