This weekend was super bright and sunny, which made it a great time to test out a whole mess of light sensors. We got in our samples from last weeks' chat, the ultra-low-cost LTR-329 (https://www.digikey.com/short/jvn94ncp). This sensor would make a good digital-only alternative to the ALS-PT19 (https://www.digikey.com/short/n550jdwp) 'analog' light sensor. And 'while we were there' we also picked up the LTR-303 (https://www.digikey.com/short/pmr33330), which is very similar to the 329 but has an IRQ output. Thankfully both use similar packages to the GUVx and LTR-390, respectively, which means we were able to recycle existing prototype PCBs to test em out. And then we also wrapped up a driver for the GUVB-C31SM UV sensor (https://www.digikey.com/short/tfzc9h7t) and tested it outside. The UVI calculation seems off, the datasheet is a lil 'so-so' on details but we are getting data so it's mostly just a matter of figuring out how to do the data scaling. The Great Search - Gas Sensors to replace the CCS811 https://www.digikey.com/short/rnhnfdt7 We've carried the CCS811 as a breakout board (https://www.digikey.com/short/87r2tq3f) for a while now, but the sensor itself is now discontinued! (https://www.digikey.com/short/0n58n301) We checked out the official replacement, ENS160 (https://www.digikey.com/short/db4fqrv3) but it's not in stock right now. We stock a few other gas sensors but it's a good time for us to take a peek at what is new and available in this topic. We've seen a big increase in MOX-based VOC sensors, sometimes with additional add-ins like temperature or humidity. woooooo our reel of TCA8418's https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TCA8418RTWR/2172843 is on the way which means its time to wrap up this board we started designing 2 years ago! this chip can do 8x10 keypad matrices and handles a queue of 10 events over I2C with an IRQ line. It works pretty well once you get a hang of how the GPIO/Keymatrix interrupts work. now that we've got the python library https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-CircuitPython_TCA8418 all sorted out its time to wrap up the Arduino code and get this board into the adafruit shop. Happy Sunday folks! This weekend we spent some time getting back to the camera boards and breakouts we designed a while ago. i wanted to try using cameras with esp32 with the esp32_camera module since we're now using that in circuitpython (https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/pull/6684) for a wide collection of camera chipset support in the espressif family. folks who have used esp32 for big projects in arduino know that the build platform can be a lil slow, so we're trying out platform.io which has 'official' support from espressif. This is our first time using it in a long time but we got a workflow going. On the 'stemma sunday' front, we are also returning to a keypad driver using the TCA8418, as we were able to get a reel of chips. This is a 80-key matrix driver over i2c and it even has linux kernel support! we're starting on a CircuitPython driver and so far have much of the gpio capability written out. This week's EYE ON NPI is making the rainbow connection - it's the ams OSRAM AS7343 Spectral Sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/ams/as7343-spectral-sensor). This is a great update to the AS7341 11-channel sensor (https://www.digikey.com/short/p4vv8b5w) we released a STEMMA QT breakout (https://www.digikey.com/short/n8bv0j9w) for a few years ago. ams OSRAM's AS7343 is a 14-channel, highly versatile, multi-purpose spectral sensor that enables consumer, commercial, industrial, and laboratory applications. It is optimized for reflective, transmissive, and emissive measurements including color matching, fluid or reagent analysis, or general spectral reconstruction. The spectral response is defined by individual channels covering approximately 380 nm to 1,000 nm with 12+2 channels: 12 in the visible spectrum (VIS) to near-infrared (NIR) range, a clear channel, and a flicker channel. The AS7343 is an interesting bird - most light sensors only support RGB and maybe IR / Clear diodes. That means you can often get a fairly good 'human eye spectral response' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectral_sensitivity) of the color that is being detected. However, the sensors cannot determine whether they are seeing something that is truly 'orange wavelength' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectral_color) or if it's a mix of RGB that just looks orange. This doesn't matter too much for if you're trying to detect the color of a Skittle (https://techcrunch.com/2017/02/06/this-candy-sorting-machine-isnt-the-hero-the-world-wants-but-its-the-hero-the-world-needs/) but if you're trying to determine the spectral radiation of a material (https://publiclab.org/notes/homechemist/08-24-2018/diy-high-resolution-spectrometer) - you really want to be able to detect the actual wavelengths. The AS7343 is a remarkably inexpensive sensor for being able to detect 14 channels: 12 wavelengths plus a clear and flicker output channel. That's also 4 more wavelengths than the AS7341! Great for scientific experimentation, LED color calibration, miniature optical spectrometers, etc. Interfacing is pretty simple: you just need I2C and a 1.8V power supply. It even looks like it's pin-compatible with the AS7341 so you could probably use our open source breakout board files (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-AS7341-PCB) and our Arduino/C (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_AS7341) or Python (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_AS7341) libraries to jump-start your design. You can build an IoT telegraph with analog feedback servos, QT Py ESP32 S2 and Circuit Python. Inspired by ship engine telegraphs, this uses analog feedback servos to make a simple yet modern two way communication system. A piece of copper tape is used to detect when it’s being held and released thanks to the magic of capacitive touch. The analog feedback servo keeps track of the handles position and sends it over WiFi using Adafruit IO as the broker. This weekend we've been noodling around with the new ESP32 support for circuitpython. The ESP32 doesn't have mass storage but it does have wifi, so we can use that as a way to connect to the REPL and also transfer files. This stuff is all very very new in circuitpy 8.x but there's a definition for the odroid go, and it's a handy board to use because it's got a screen and battery built in for wireless testing. We also wrote up a driver for the max17048 https://www.digikey.com/short/m5n5n47f a lipo battery gauge much like the LC709 that we use. it's even in stock! scott and dan just merged in Web (WiFi) Workflow for circuitpython and ESP32 (https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/pull/6685) which means that it's incredibly easy to start working with chips like the ESP32 which have excellent WiFi networking but do not have USB mass-storage. we want to have CircuitPython run on these chips but of course we ALSO want to have a great user experience for beginners, and being able to pop open a serial terminal or upload files via a browser's drag-n-drop capabilities would be sweeeeet. we pulled out an odroid go (https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-go/) which was a popular ESP32 WROVER-based game console, and uploaded the code with esp32 loader (https://espressif.github.io/esptool-js/) . then we configured the AP and SSID password (https://docs.circuitpython.org/en/latest/docs/workflows.html) - this will be done more automatically in the future, for now its done manually with some REPL commands. Now when we visit the IP address displayed on the odroid's screen, it will let us immediately go to the built-in serial console that is also web-compatible! any repl commands are echoed on the display as well. next up we will try uploading files.
