The Desk of Ladyada - S3 & Sample Sunday
This weekend we spent most of the days outside, but we did get to one new board! We already make a Feather with an ESP32-S3 8MB module. Espressif recently sent us a few reels of ESP32-S3 mini modules with 4M flash and 2MB PSRAM, so we are spinning a new version of the Feather for this module. It's pin compatible but since the modules look so alike we ran a new PCB with silkscreen to indicate which you have. We also got a big bag of samples we're testing out -we can show you what we got and whether we'll be stocking them! The Great Search - Alternative replacement for our go-to 3.3V regulator https://www.digikey.com/short/vcqct7jj The chip shortage is the gift that keeps not giving! Our next shipment of our go-to 3.3V LDO, the AP2112K-3.3 is delayed and we use a LOT of these chips - over a thousand a day. Not only do we use it for all our dev boards as a regulator to take USB or Lipo input and drop it down to 3.3V, but it's also on almost all of our breakouts as a regulator that can take 3 to 5V and provide 3.3V output no matter which is used. For that reason we need it to have very low drop-out. To keep our items in stock, we could change the lower-power breakouts to use a less-current-output version of the AP2112K (500~600mA) and stretch out our current stock! #deskofladyada #thegreatsearch #adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI - nRF5340 Audio Development Kit
This week's EYE ON NPI is chillin' and listening to some vibin' beats - we're featuring Nordic's jam-packed nRF5340 Audio Development Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf5340-audio-development-kit) that will get you going fast with Bluetooth Low Energy audio development with a lovely kit that has everything you need to build both basic and advanced BTLE audio demos that exercise all the new capabilities of BT 4.x and 5.x's native audio streaming technology Audio was one of the first killer app's for Bluetooth adoption. Who doesn't remember when ubiquitous 'hands-free' headsets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headset_(audio)#Bluetooth_wireless_headsets) started popping up in every business guy's ear. For mobile devices, these headsets turned out be quick to pair, and allowed people to talk, or listen to music, while driving or working without wires. Bluetooth classic audio is still incredibly popular today: not just used in headsets but also in Bluetooth speakers (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/klein-tools-inc/AEPJS2/11570486), hearing aids, wireless mics, home voice agents, and more! When the audio profile was first invented, there were a few, totally reasonable restrictions placed on how it was used. First, it's a point-to-point connection - also called source-sink connection. There's a supplier source of audio - say the MP3 player - and a destination sink like a speaker. Second, the compression codec had to match the processor and battery capabilities of late 90's technology. The first classic codec was called SBC, although recently there are newer codecs that can do a better job with reducing lossyness and, of course, can take advantage of the Moore's-law improvements in memory and processor capabilities. Unfortunately, as one can expect in such a technology space, many of the codecs are patented, licensed, and require per-device fees. Also, unless you know what to look for, it's harder to compare two headsets with different codecs, as another variable that affects audio quality and delay. While many non-audio/non-keyboard devices have thankfully moved from BT classic to BTLE, mostly in order to avoid Apple's MFI program, there's been a bit of a lag in getting audio devices to switch over from classic to LE due to the high inertia of technological laziness. However, in the last few years, a Really Good Reason to move over has been invented: AirPods! (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MME73AM/A/airpods-3rd-generation) Yep, when Apple came out with their new wireless Bluetooth earbuds, they had to come up with a custom BTLE protocol - because there's two sinks and one source, and even if you created two connections (one for left and one for right) the source would have to work hard to synchronize audio. Sure Apple can put the time and money into that kind of development, but what about everyone else who wanted to make similar products? That's why when BTLE audio came 'free' with multi-point transmission and synchronization and an improved free codec, folks' ears started perking up. With Nordic's new nRF5340 ADK (https://www.digikey.com/short/vm7q7fwz), creating advanced BTLE Audio applications is super fast. The nRF5340 is a dual core ARM processor, which means it's easy to have one core dedicated to codec management and DMA audio streaming, and the other core for interfacing and control. The free software examples (https://developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/applications/nrf5340_audio/README.html) come with two main demos right now: a synchronous example for making wireless earbuds, and a broadcast example for sending audio to multiple sinks. Note that for these examples you'll often want two ADKs so you can stream audio to both ADKs as a way to mimic earbuds, for example. And, have you heard the good news? Digi-key has a TON of the nRF5340 Audio Development Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/vm7q7fwz) in stock right now for immediate shipment. Each ADK has all the accessory hardware needed to immediately bootstrap your BTLE example project. (Hint, it's also a great dev board for general nRF5340 development, with SD card, built in debugger, power management, Arduino-esque headers, RGB LEDs, and user interface buttons. Pick up two of these dev kits today and you can be jammin' and boppin' by tomorrow afternoon!

The Great Search - 8 ohm 0.25W, 2" diameter round speaker
This week, we have a request from someone working on a kit with an an audio output - they need to spec out an inexpensive speaker that will play the audio clips in their design and they had a few rough requirements they wanted to hit: the audio driving circuit they're using is 8 ohms 0.25 Watt, so the speaker cant have have a lower power rating or it will blow out. The size is about 2 inches diameter, and it needs to be a round speaker to fit into the PCB. Finally, the audio frequency range is not that wide, we just need to play tones that are about 600 Hz. The Desk of Ladyada - Pocket VNA, Crystals and Minerals and Blood moon
There's a full lunar eclipse tonight that you'll be able to see if you're in the eastern half of N America or in S America (https://moon.nasa.gov/news/172/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-lunar-eclipse/) if it isn't cloudy, go outside and look up! We also went to the NJ Rock, Gem, Mineral and Fossil show (https://nj.show/) yesterday with some Fruit Friends and picked up some really sweet gems - we'll show those off live under the overhead. Finally, we pulled out our pocket VNA we ordered many years ago to try it out - Once calibrated, you can use it to check antenna responsivity, we're also going to try to learn how to use it to tune our pi networks for boards where we DIY the RF section instead of using a module. EYE on NPI - NXP P3S0200GM I3C Switch with Hardware Select and Enable
This week's EYE ON NPI has an extra I bonus feature - we're featuring the NXP P3S0200GM I3C Switch with Hardware Select and Enable. (https://www.digikey.com/short/td77904f) You might be thinking we made a typo there, as you may be familiar with I2C but have you heard of I3C? Yep, that's three I's for ya, and you'll probably start seeing more sensors, devices and microcontrollers that support I3C which is an extension of I2C with many improvements. I2C is a sensor interface you are probably well familiar with, just about every microcontroller has I2C hardware support, and about half of peripheral devices and sensors use I2C for data transfer or configuration. I2C is easy to wire up: you only need two data lines. It's a fairly simple overall communication system: each devices has a 7-bit address, with 1 bit for read/write commands, then data is sent after. You can put multiple devices on one I2C bus as long as the addresses don't collide, (https://learn.adafruit.com/i2c-addresses) great for low-pin-count setups or chaining. And, hey did you know that NXP invented I2C? Philips, which then became NXP, originally published version 1.0 the I2C specification in 1992 in app note UM10204 (https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/user-guide/UM10204.pdf) - and because it was a well-written, open, and royalty/license-free standard, the entire industry joined in. But, there are a few things about I2C that can drive folks a little batty. First up is the speed limitations. I2C uses pull-ups for raising the voltage on the 'open drain' connections, but it takes time to charge and drain the capacitance of lines and gate inputs through a resistor. I3C does not use external resistors, instead there's an active pull-up that transitions between Open-Drain and Push-Pull mode. (https://www.mipi.org/node/2604) This reduces power usage and allows I3C to run at a spicy 12MHz, well in line with SPI speeds. Next up, there's bus contention - woe is the engineer who has to deal with clock stretching on a bus, or missed clocks. I3C thankfully does not permit clock stretching! (https://www.mipi.org/node/1247) peripherals cannot take control of the clock by keeping it pulled down. Instead all devices must respect the clock. "But!" you are saying "what if I'm designing a peripheral and over I3C we get a sensor wakeup or read request, and I'm not ready to immediately answer in time?" Normally you'd have to have to either use polling for a data-ready bit (yuck, uses a lot of power, bandwidth and time) or you can use an IRQ pin. But if you're using IRQ pins then you've just lost the benefits of having a shared 2-wire bus! Well there's another nifty capability in I3C for in-band interruption management where the controller can hand off the bus to peripherals to notify when they are ready to be listened to. There's a great document from NXP showing the high and low level implementation / trace details of I3C vs I2C that we recommend you check out here (https://community.nxp.com/pwmxy87654/attachments/pwmxy87654/tech-days/256/1/AMF-DES-T2686.pdf) As you start adding I3C controllers and targets into your embedded systems, you may still find yourself dealing with address collisions, or maybe you want to have two controllers connect to one peripheral. Since I3C has a stricter timing requirement for dealing with the high speeds it can perform at, you'll want a switching chip that is designed for I3C. That's where the NXP P3S0200GM I3C Switch will come to your rescue. (https://www.digikey.com/short/td77904f) It's from NXP who helped bring I3C to market so you know it's going to work exactly as the specification intends and will also be back-compatible with I2C devices. And, best of all, the NXP P3S0200GM I3C Switch (https://www.digikey.com/short/td77904f) is in stock now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key, perfect for placement into your next design. Even if you're only using I2C right now, you'll be future-proof ready for when sensor and chip revisions start coming out with I3C support. Order today and you'll be switchin' by tomorrow afternoon.

Testing out the CircuitPython Azure library
We have some fun Azure for IoT projects coming up, but before we get to them, we wanted to test out the CircuitPython AzureIot library over at https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_AzureIoT with the new-ish ESP32-S2 TFT Feather. We set up a new device type that would report temperature, humidity, pressure and battery percentage. Then we provisioned a new device and adapted the example to report data from a connected BME280. There's a small fix we need to make to the NTP library to support raw sockets on native wifi devices but otherwise it works very well! The Desk of Ladyada - Sample Sunday & a NAU7802 tester start
This week we did a lot of sample testing! First up is this cool conductive rubber sheet. We sell conductive rubber cord, but we had a recommendation to get some 2D shapes as well. This material is easy to cut and has some changing resistance with movement. We also got a motorized potentiometer sample, which is super fun - we're using a simple H-bridge to send the 10K slider back and forth. Finally we're working on our NAU7802 tester, since our order of NAU7802 chips finally came in. This is a load cell amp chip that has I2C interfacing, but really it's for any precision wheatstone-bridge-like things. Motorized potentiometer goes back and forth and back and forth
we got a motorized pot sample in and wanted to test it out. this is a 10K linear slide pot with a small 5V motor on the bottom that has a small belt to move the slider automatically. some very fancy a/v boards use these so you can quick change presets. we're testing the motor movement with a DRV8830 STEMMA QT breakout we designed before covid and then sorta got distracted from. the pots are on order now, and we'll also try to release this lil breakout! #motorized #pot #adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
