The Great Search – a RS-485 transceiver
This week we're continuing on last week's RS-232 FeatherWing and looking at maybe making a multi-use design. We've also had requests for an RS-485 FeatherWing and perhaps we can design something that could be used for either. We've used a 'MAX232'-like before, but for RS-485 we'll need a different kind of chip, one that does a differential transmission. Let's see what's available and how we would wire it up! The Desk of Ladyada - A nifty SONY turntable, and a few chips we're checkin out
We have been on the lookout for a Sony Flamingo - a very retro-futuristic turntable that can play singles or LPs using a funky minimalist design. It is a gorgeous piece of machinery. Meanwhile, we know folks like using a Raspi to make a 'pihole' ad/malware blocking DNS server but pi's are hard to get, so we looked at turning a Feather ESP32-S2 TFT into an 'esphole' and found a great project to fork off and tweak https://github.com/s60sc/ESP32_AdBlocker We've added mass storage config, and a TFT display to show the IP address and status. EYE ON NPI - NXP SC18IM704 UART to I²C-Bus Bridge
This week's EYE ON NPI will woo you like a period romance show - no, we're not talking about Bridgerton, this is a different kind of Bridge! We're highlighting NXP's SC18IM704 UART to I²C-Bus Bridge (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nxp-semi/sc18im704-uart-to-i2c-bus-bridge). This is a chip or module that will let you take an existing system with RS-232 or UART Serial and wedge in I2C support. Handy for desktop computer systems that just need to integrate a single sensor or control in userspace or embedded computers without extra GPIO: having user-space support for I2C, ADC, DAC or SPI is rare if you don't happen to have a BeBox (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeBox) but you can get almost any kind of device connected if you've got I2C! These sorts of bridge devices could also be super useful during the chip shortage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020%E2%80%93present_global_chip_shortage) - which we think will continue through until 2024 - where you have a design that has the right matching peripheral set, and then at the last minute, a part can't be sourced and you end up needing to re-spin the design. You may be able to get a similar spec part but...it doesn't have UART, only I2C, or SPI, or any mix-and-match combination of the three! For that reason, there's actually a couple different bridge chips that NXP makes (https://www.nxp.com/products/peripherals-and-logic/signal-chain/bridges:MC_50962) The SC18IM704 (https://www.digikey.com/short/j242d1nm) has a single UART in and an I2C output, with 8 additional GPIO pins that can be handy for IRQ or busy pin reading, or for resetting pins or changing address selects. Commands are sent as bytes, and the user can initiate I2C start/stop, then read/write as well as setting GPIO direction, pull and value. Since NXP now owns Philips who wrote the I2C specification, (https://www.i2c-bus.org/specification/) you can be sure that this chip will work well with any I2C-standard sensor or expander you could find. If you aren't integrating the chip, like say you have a computer board or other industrial device and you just want to get started fast, you can pick up the NXP SC18IM704-EVB eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc./SC18IM704-EVB/15777144) which provides an RS-232 port and plug and play headers with 3V logic and 5V compliance. Like many new product introductions lately, there were not many chips released in the initial stock and they're currently sold out! However, the NXP SC18IM704 UART to I²C-Bus Bridge (https://www.digikey.com/short/j242d1nm) is a stocking part on Digi-Key and a few thousand will be shipping in 2 months, so you can book an order today and have it send to you as soon as its available!

spaceball 2003 and a bit of pyserial

A QT Py ESP32-S3 is coming soon :)
The ESP32-S3 has native USB like the S2 and adds a dual core Tensilica, Wifi AND BLE plus extra SRAM so its a great upgrade. We worked it into a QT Py format which will make for great lil IoT projects. (check out the Feather we are stocking too https://www.adafruit.com/product/5323) we like our panelization technique for boards, with half route and half v-score, it makes it fun and easy to pop off the boards from the railings and test. The raspi here is uploading code via esptool, checking the GPIO and then verifying the wifi strength is as expected. The Great Search - 3V TTL to RS-232 converter
To get this nifty Spaceball user interface working, we're using a USB to RS-232 adapter cable. But for the next step in this project we'll want to use a Feather board. In order to connect to the DE-9 port safely, we need to convert the TTL serial on a Feather (0-3V logic) to +-6~10V inverted logic. Thankfully, there are chips that make it easy - they even have built in switched-cap converters to create the +6V and -6V logic rails! The Desk of Ladyada - Mailbag & Spaceball 2003!
Mr Ladyada gave me this funky 3D mouse to play with today - it has a DE-9 plus power supply cable on it, so with a little googling and pySerial hacking we were able to get button and motion data out of it. Next up, we want to design a RS-232 Featherwing to make it easy to attach to these sorts of devices and send/receive data. Even though RS-232 is kinda old at this point, we still see a lot of devices that show up with one of these 'universal' ports! We'll also check out a cute Arduino compatible we got in the mail. The Great Search - 3V TTL to RS-232 converter https://www.digikey.com/short/5jrm33hr To get this nifty Spaceball user interface working, we're using a USB to RS-232 adapter cable. But for the next step in this project we'll want to use a Feather board. In order to connect to the DE-9 port safely, we need to convert the TTL serial on a Feather (0-3V logic) to +-6~10V inverted logic. Thankfully, there are chips that make it easy - they even have built in switched-cap converters to create the +6V and -6V logic rails! EYE ON NPI - Bourns MF-LSMF Series High-Power PPTC Resettable Fuses
This week's EYE ON NPI is a fusion of form and functionality - it's the MF-LSMF Series High-Power PPTC Resettable Fuse collection from Bourns! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bourns/mf-lsmf-series-high-power-pptc-resettable-fuses) These are super-fuses, made of a polymeric material that allows them to be small and thin, but pass large amounts of current, at high bias voltages. With current ranges up to 6A hold (12A trip!) and 33 VDC max voltage, these fuses are burly enough to be used in large LED or motor-driving projects that normally would need a more expensive PMIC or eFuse (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/pmic-current-regulation-management/734) or a non-resettable glass/ceramic fuse. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/fuses/139) PPTC stands for polymetric positive temperature coefficient. PTC means that as the temperature rises around the resistor, the resistance also rises. There are linear kinds of PTC's that can be used for temperature measurement (silistors) but these are ones that have a non-linear rise (switching type). The resistance actually starts dipping slowly and then shoots up after reaching a certain, adjustable, temperature called the Curie point. When current starts flowing through a PTC, the resistance dips a little, and its quite low to start, usually in the milli-ohm range. Once the current increases a certain amount, the wattage through the PTC's resistance (P = V*I = R*I^2) sets the dissipating heat, the temperature rises, and the Curie point is reached. Then the resistance shoots up to 'open' the circuit, essentially disconnecting the two sides of the circuit since the resistance is in the 10's or 100's of Kohms. However, now the current has dropped and so the power dissipation goes down to zero. After a few seconds or minutes, the material cools down past the Curie point and the resistance allows current through again. (This is why, if your USB port or random electronics product stops working, it does work to unplug it, wait a few minutes, and then try again.) Compare this with classic 'wire' fuses with ceramic or glass or thermoplastic bodies, and a thin wire inside. When too much current goes through the fuse wire, it gets hotter and hotter and eventually melts, cutting off the load from the source voltage (https://flickr.com/photos/shardayyy/8028645604/) But it doesn't self 'heal' - it's a one time thing only! Bourns has adjusted the Curie point on each fuse to match a different voltage and current limit, and they can be trusted to quickly trip when the current goes over the rated limitation. PPTC's are inexpensive, easy-to-use, and add quick protection to your products - you may have seen them on many of our own designs such as the Adafruit Metro which as a simple 5V 500mA one (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2488). We're checking out a few samples we got last week including this totally adorable traffic light for architectural models. It has a common anode and three cathode wires, that make for easy control. The wires are super skinny but we poked em into a solderless breadboard to make this demo in Arduino. The Great Search: 5V eFuse
eFuses are a nifty way to protect your electronics from over/under powering - handy for maker electronics AND industrial equipment that needs to keep chugging along no matter what happens to the power supply. We had someone ask us to design a board that would take 4xAA input and give USB output - one way to do that is with a buck-boost converter (which we already have) but maybe we could get away with a lower-cost and complexity design. Instead we'll look for an eFuse that will permit no more than about 5.5V and have reverse current, reverse voltage and under/over voltage protection! The Desk of Ladyada - Lets design a Pico to Arduino Shield converter
We got a user request today for a board that would convert a Raspberry Pi Pico $4 microcontroller board to use Arduino shields. An interesting idea! Let's go through what we do at the Desk when a new idea like this is presented to gauge feasibility. The Great Search - 5V eFuse https://www.digikey.com/short/b9c215hd eFuses are a nifty way to protect your electronics from over/under powering - handy for maker electronics AND industrial equipment that needs to keep chugging along no matter what happens to the power supply. We had someone ask us to design a board that would take 4xAA input and give USB output - one way to do that is with a buck-boost converter (which we already have) but maybe we could get away with a lower-cost and complexity design. Instead we'll look for an eFuse that will permit no more than about 5.5V and have reverse current, reverse voltage and under/over voltage protection!
