eFuses are a nifty way to protect your electronics from over/under powering - handy for maker electronics AND industrial equipment that needs to keep chugging along no matter what happens to the power supply. We had someone ask us to design a board that would take 4xAA input and give USB output - one way to do that is with a buck-boost converter (which we already have) but maybe we could get away with a lower-cost and complexity design. Instead we'll look for an eFuse that will permit no more than about 5.5V and have reverse current, reverse voltage and under/over voltage protection! This week's EYE ON NPI is going with the flow and keepin' everything chill and low pressure with Sensirion's SFM3119 Low-Pressure Drop Flow Meter! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/sensirion/sfm3119-low-pressure-drop-flow-meter) This sensor is designed primarily for medical use cases - ventilators, CPAPs, oxygen masks, etc., but could also be used for industrial setups where non-toxic gas flow needs to be measured. What's interesting about this sensor is it doesn't use a little fan like the turbine sensors (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5066) we've used before for liquid flow measurements. Instead there's a digital (capacitive?) flow sensor that does not impede gas/air flow. This means it can be used for very low flow rates without interference. Like many of the sensors we've been investigating lately, there's an integrated analog front end with I2C controller already inside, so no complex calibration or linearization setup is required. There's a simple 4 pin interface with power, ground, SCL and SDA. On GitHub we found a wide range of libraries (https://github.com/Sensirion/?q=sfm&type=all&language=&sort=) for Arduino, Python, and embedded C, to handle the various I2C commands and checksums required. Data comes out of the libraries as flow rate in slm (standard liter per minute) and temperature. We were able to get our Arduino example with OLED output display working within a few minutes! Given the strong support, low price, and ease-of-use we can recommend this flow rate sensor even for non-medical purposes. While its designed for air or oxygen, it could possibly be calibrated for other non-corrosive gas types. While we were prepping for this EYE ON NPI, the sensor went out of stock at Digi-Key! But according to the lead time estimate system, more Sensirion SFM3119's will be in stock at Digi-Key in the next month or two (https://www.digikey.com/short/2jcff3qp). You can back-order this sensor or sign up to be emailed when they come back into stock for immediate shipment or notification when the next batch of this popular sensor lands in the Digi-Key warehouse!

jepler is working on a Pull Request to FluxEngine to add support for the "a2r" flux format, commonly used in Apple II software archiving. Together with open source passport.py, this can be used to bring a copy-protected floppy disk into an emulator. This video shows "Pow! Zap! Ker-plunk! The Comic Book Maker!" for Apple 2. We were flipping through a cool old book on how computers were made and there was a section on 'core memory'. This is how data was stored dynamically on computers before capacitive-based RAM. Instead of storing a charge on a transistor's gate, the flip of a ferromagnetic core in a grid could store a single bit. Some folks make core memory for fun now - you just need some enameled wire and miniature ferrite cores! This week was massive in the fabrication dept at adafruit with a lots of revisions that we started a few months ago. Check out https://www.adafruit.com/new/ to see check them out. While this week was busy managing those revs, we're checking out some other sensors that caught our eye for turning into STEMMA QT boards: VL53L4CX (6m range ToF!), ENS160 (AQI sensor), DRV8231 (3.7A H-bridge), and LPS28 (4000 hPa barometer). Mr ladyada also picked up a nifty old book on computers. The Great Search - Miniature Ferrite Core Ring (Toroid) https://www.digikey.com/short/3md320f9 We were flipping through a cool old book on how computers were made and there was a section on 'core memory'. This is how data was stored dynamically on computers before capacitive-based RAM. Instead of storing a charge on a transistor's gate, the flip of a ferromagnetic core in a grid could store a single bit. Some folks make core memory for fun now - you just need some enameled wire and miniature ferrite cores! while the ultra-tiny rings of yore are no longer made, you can still get some pretty small toroids. This week's EYE ON NPI can make a big difference in how fast you get temperature and differential pressure data into your next design - it's TDK's AVD Series Low-Profile Pressure Transmitters (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/epcos/avd-series-low-profile-pressure-transmitters). They're all-in-one, ready-to-use temperature and pressure modules with ports, analog management circuit and a simple I2C interface that can quickly integrated into any microcontroller or microcomputer product. These are differential pressure sensor modules: that means they will be able to measure the positive or negative difference between two ports. Very handy when you just need to know how an internal cavity pressure measures up against outside air pressure. A common use case for these sorts of sensors is HVAC systems with filters to keep dust and debris out of the system where it could clog the motors or make air dirty. The filters eventually fill with dirt (https://www.flickr.com/photos/ivydawned/4020166274/) and the HVAC has to spend more and more energy to push the air through the clogged filter. While maintenance staff could check the filters weekly, for a large building that could get very time consuming. Instead, a sensor like this one could measure the differential pressure once a day and notify staff when the change increases past some threshold. We like the small, fully-integrated design of this sensor. There's a nice plastic enclosure, two barbed ports, and dual JST SH 5-pin (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/SHR-05V-S/759884) connectors that can be used for I2C connectivity. These aren't quite STEMMA QT connectors, but we were able to fashion a simple adapter for a demo. The I2C interface is very simple: there's no register map, just read 4 bytes over I2C and perform some simple calculations to determine temperature and pressure. We were able to throw together some Arduino code to read data and display it on an OLED in under an hour. The sensor comes in three varieties: 1.6kPa, 10kPa and 700kPa ranges (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/epcos/avd-series-low-profile-pressure-transmitters). The code and wiring is the same for all three, you can just change the range multiplier depending on which one you've got. Finally, for fast mechanical integration, there's a well-detailed dimensional drawing and a STEP 3D file with all the elements rendered in color. While this module is more expensive than a raw analog differential piezo pressure sensor - having the device packaged, linearized and digitized makes it very easy to integrate and install. And you can tell they did a really great job making this a quality sensor module! Best of all, all three versions of the TDK AVD Series Low-Profile Pressure Transmitters are in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment (https://www.digikey.com/short/90n7wrj5). Take the pressure off of yourself, and order today - you'll be able to add a professional quality, ready-to-install differential pressure sensor by tomorrow afternoon.

This week we've been working on more and more revisions and also trying to get some older designs out the door. For example, we've got some ESP32-S3 feather and QT Py designs that we didn't release due to some errors and also S3 support in the world wasn't quite ready. But with our revised S2 design done, we swapped out a board on the panel with an S3 mini module and there's even Arduino support in espressif's esp32 branch. we spent today working on a ESP32-S3 feather. you may be thinking "hey wait didn't you already design one?" yep! but we had a hardware bug that increased deep-sleep power, and so we wanted to revise the ESP32-S2 feather first to fix it since the PCBs for the two designs are shared. now we have the new ESP32-S2 in the shop with the fix https://www.adafruit.com/product/5303 so we can respin the S3. even better, Espressif has started adding S3 support in a branch so we were able to test the GPIO, I2C, UART, NeoPixel, low power, and WiFi capabilities successfully. We've got a PR open to add this new board - it's very exciting! https://github.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/pull/6450 This board uses the only S3 mini module available right now, with 8 MB of Flash and no PSRAM. however, there's more SRAM on the S3 than S2 so its still very usable. when the PSRAM-containing mini module comes out we'll make a version with that too.
