EYE on NPI – SEN54 Environmental Sensor Node

This week's EYE ON NPI is another banger from Sensirion - who has been really rockin' out with great sensors over the last few years - it's the SEN54 Environmental Sensor Node (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/sensirion/sek-sen5x-evaluation-kit), an all-in-one sensor node that combines all of the Sensirion top hits in one. This sensor looks like your everyday dust sensor - just like the SPS30 particulate sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SPS30/9598990), but combines additional sensors inside! There's a few models planned for the SEN5X series - today we're highlighting the SEN54 which has * Particulate Matter - PM2.5 * Humidity and Temperature via SHT40 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SHT40-AD1B-R3/14322709) * Volatile Organic Compound via SGP41 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SGP41-D-R4/15652788) (There's also a SEN55 which will include an addition NOx sensor, but it has not been released yet) The sensor uses a sub-processor that will act as a single I2C peripheral to receive commands and send sensor data back. It's a great deal if you want a simple-to-install air quality sensor with all the goodies. There's a 3D model available for mechanical installation, and for connectivity you just need a single JST GHR 6 pin (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/GHR-06V-S/807818) cable which has power, and I2C or UART data. Note that the cable is not sold separately so you'll need to acquire the cable from a separate vendor or pick up the full evaluation kit that comes with a couple cables at additional cost. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SEK-SEN5X/15903862) The real success story here is the libraries that are pre-written and supported by Sensirion that makes getting started very very fast. We were able to wire up the SEN54 to an ESP32 board and run the BLE demo (https://github.com/Sensirion/arduino-ble-gadget) within a few minutes! Using the Sensirion MyAmbience app, (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sensirion-myambience/id1529131572) we could see instant data show up on our iOS or Android device. Over-all a slick and easy experience. We must say that we're really impressed with how maker-engineer friendly the sensors and firmware development is. This all-in-one sensor board is going to be a popular environmental sensor from folks who really know environmental sensing! Digi-Key has a whole bunch of the Sensirion SEN54 sensors in stock right now for immediate shipment (https://www.digikey.com/short/pn08ff2w) and with same-day shipping, you can order today and be sensing by tomorrow afternoon!

Let's archive all those old mac floppies, starting with this 1984 biz sim game!

Let's archive all those old mac floppies, starting with this 1984 biz sim game! OK we're making slow but steady progress - now that we've refactored Adafruit Floppy to better handle looooong pulses, identified the best drive for reading mac GCR diskettes, and tested fluxengine's new .dsk format support, we can start reading and archiving mac 400k/800k disk images. first up is this very old, nicely made game called "Make Millions" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Make_Millions by Tom Snyder https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soup2Nuts who not only wrote games but also developed Dr Katz Professional Therapist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Katz,_Professional_Therapist Anyways, wanna play it? we've upload it to the internet archive and by setting a few metadata flags it launches in PCE.js for instant playback in the browser! https://archive.org/details/make-millions-tom-snyder #millions #adafruit #floppy Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Refactor of Adafruit_Floppy for timer support & mac disk success!

OK we were still having some issues with mac 400k/800k floppies and their weirdly long GCR pulses so we decided to refactor our bitbanging code to use a timer capture peripheral and a pwm waveform generator (bit odd because the period is what changes there, but it is possible with most timer peripherals) We also characterized a pile of floppy drives we had - still best results came from the Sony MPF but a few other drives were able to read with 10+ (!) retries. The timer refactor didn't seem to make much difference on the GCR decoding but it seemed like the right thing to do and there's less fudge-factor dependancies on the cpu clock frequency. The Great Search: 26 pin 1mm FPC cable for laptop floppy drive

In order for our floppy accessing project to connect to laptop-style drives, we will need to source FPC (flex printed circuit board PCB) cables that fit the existing drives and can snake on over to our PCB. Unlike most display FPC's, these need to be 1mm pitch, and we need to watch out for whether they are A-A or A-B style. Thankfully Digi-Key stocks every length, style and pitch of FPCs you could possibly want. So let's find it and we'll order it for our prototype testing this week! in the sky! it's a bird? it's a plane? it's the SUPER DUPER FLOPPY FLOOPER!

ok getting back to our floppy project (after we did a bunch of hardware designs last week, stay tuned for some exciting new products!) here's a USB floppy drive that we will use our 'flooper board to turn from a 26-pin FPC into a 34-pin IDC. and...it works! it's a straight conversion, just needs the mechanical adaptation here, and you can use these common USB floppy drives as an everyday standard magnetic-flux device. here we're reading an IBM MFM floppy. the samsung 321 can read mac 800ks, but the teac fb-05 is not as happy with those pulses! #adafruit #floppy #flooper Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Testing out the new Adafruit IO wippersnapper BME280 sensor support

the industrious adafruit.io team did a massive refactor of the way we support i2c sensors in wippersnapper to allow automatic generation of new sensor devices without having to hardcode how they look and are treated in the backend (and dontcha know, we even made the repo where we are keeping all that metadata public over at https://github.com/adafruit/Wippersnapper_Components/tree/main/components/i2c) and to celebrate, we added TWO more sensors - not only the AHT20 but also the DPS310 and ultra-popular BME280. here we show just how fast it is to set up data logging to adafruit.io with NO code, NO soldering, NO command line and NO toolchain. plug in the bme280 sensor in the qt py s2, open up wippersnapper, check the i2c address appeared, then connect to the new device and select which sub-sensors you want to log into a feed. boom, all in one tiktok minute! more plug-n-play i2c sensors coming soon... #adafruitio #adafruit #bme280 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Desk of Ladyada - RETURN OF THE FLOPPY HACKING (time to write!)

ok cats and kittens, we know you missed the floppy hackin' so you should be glad to know we're BACK on the floppy kick, with some timer driven code for capturing and generating flux pulses. we're not 100% sure we need timers to do it but we were having a few issues with writing floppies consistently so figured this could help. today we wrote an ibm mfm floppy and then read it on another floppy drive connected to our computer. being able to write floppy disks also means we may be able to categorize disk drives better since we can test writing and reading pulses. we also put together one of our 'Floopers in order to properly test a laptop drive - successfully! finally, we saw this nifty cut-tape-removal tool on twitter https://twitter.com/dannymodules/status/1490248252465184771 and we're going to try jlcpcb's 3d printing service to get a couple made since they seem super handy The Great Search - 26 pin 1mm FPC cable for laptop floppy drive https://www.digikey.com/short/vbzqw277 In order for our floppy accessing project to connect to laptop-style drives, we will need to source FPC (flex pcb) cables that fit the existing drives and can snake on over to our PCB. EYE on NPI – Authentrend FIDO Biometric Security Keys

This week's EYE ON NPI will be your loyal friend like a pet dog - it's Authentrend FIDO2 Biometric Security Keys (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/authentrend/fido-biometric-security-keys). These FIDO2 compatible USB dongles have an absolutely adorable built-in fingerprint sensor on the end, which means they have an additional layer of security in addition to ownership: you also need to have the matching fingerprints. This is great when you want to secure something with 2 or 3 factors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-factor_authentication) and possibly without having to have folks remember or change passwords. Historically, authentication was done with just a username and password . But, as we've all learned, usernames and passwords can be guessed or stolen or hacked! Some folks have two-factor time-based code cards (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/12/how-enable-two-factor-authentication-paypal), apps (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1066447?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid) or SMS messages which add "something you own" to the list. FIDO/U2F cards have been around as a USB-based authentication system for a bit, and they're slowly gaining traction through an open standard which makes it easy to integrate with web or desktop applications. (https://fidoalliance.org/fido2/) We're huge fans of moving all of your security risk to hardware like these, that abide by open standards - it's very hard to create a secure hardware device. Firmware, storage, even when encrypted, is not often crackable or glitchable (https://blog.securityinnovation.com/glitching-firmware-over-usb-using-facewhisperer). Using an external dongle gives you a hermetically sealed challenge-response system from a company that does only one thing. because the private keys are stored in the hardware, you don't have to store them on device in firmware. These come in a few different mechanical shapes and flavors, including USB A fingerprint key (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/authentrend-technology-inc./ATKEY.PRO-TYPE-A/15761935), USB C fingerprint key (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/authentrend-technology-inc./ATKEY.PRO-TYPE-C/15761936), and a keycard that has NFC, BLE and a USB-A flip-out (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/authentrend-technology-inc./ATKEY.CARD/15761933) We were able to get our fingerprint entered into the dongle using Windows 10's key manager, then used the same dongle to add 3-factor authentication to our Google account. Of course you probably want to use it for non-website projects too! You can interface with the security dongle very easily using the python-fido2 library (https://github.com/Yubico/python-fido2), which means any embedded Linux/single board computer will be able to have trusted authentication added with USB. This could be a very inexpensive and fast way to add trusted authentication for your product without having to hire a cryptographer. There are plenty of Authentrend ATKEY.PRO TYPE-A (https://www.digikey.com/short/p3t50d14) in stock at Digi-Key right now, that's the one we've been using the most, but do check out the other variants as well, such as the USB C, if your computer has type C ports (https://www.digikey.com/short/p3t50d14). Order one for each user today, knowing that the FIDO2 standard will mean easy and trustworthy deployment for many years! See more at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11UfySDn7_I

Some NTSC-input TFT product samples

the silicon shortage has pushed a lot of revisions onto our plates, chips and displays both have gotten a lot of updates. here we are testing a revision of product https://www.adafruit.com/product/911 which is a 2.0" TFT with NTSC input. what better source of stable NTSC signal than a raspberry pi zero? simply solder wires to the TV pins and keep HDMI disconnected for a quick way to verify the screen works as intended. #adafruit #tft #ntsc Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Luxuriously Long Stemma QT cable samples!

Luxuriously Long Stemma QT cable samples! I2C was never meant to go 200, 300 or 400mm but we laugh in the face of death thanks to these samples we got of some looooooooong stemma qt cables. each cable has two JST SH connectors on either end and a PVC sheathed center. we were inspired by this tweet https://twitter.com/lovyan03/status/1480867328783163396 about I2C wire interleaving with power in order to avoid cross-talk for long cables (I2C is not differential so you definitely do not want to use twisted wires!) if you look closely, the cable is flat and has the red power wire between SDA and SCL instead of having them next to each other. we're just trying it out here with our fancy new ESP32 Feather V2 which has an onboard STEMMA QT connector. #adafruit #stemma #cables Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Floppy Interfacing Hack Chat with Adafruit

Adafruit's Limor "Ladyada" Fried and Phillip Torrone will host the Hack Chat on Wednesday, February 2 at noon Pacific / 3pm Eastern. https://hackaday.io/event/183426-floppy-interfacing-hack-chat-with-adafruit When a tiny fleck of plastic-covered silicon can provide enough capacity to store a fair percentage of humanity's collected knowledge, it may seem like a waste of time to be fooling around with archaic storage technology like floppy disks. With several orders of magnitude less storage capacity than something like even the cheapest SD card or thumb drive, and access speeds that clock in somewhere between cold molasses and horse and buggy, floppy drives really don't seem like they have any place on the modern hacker's bench. Or do they? Learning the ins and out of interfacing floppy drives with modern microcontrollers is at least an exercise in hardware hacking that can pay dividends in other projects. A floppy drive is, after all, a pretty complex little device, filled with electromechanical goodies that need to be controlled in a microcontroller environment. And teasing data from a stream of magnetic flux changes ends up needing some neat hacks that might just serve you well down the line. So don't dismiss the humble floppy drive as a source for hacking possibilities. The folks at Adafruit sure haven't, as they've been working diligently to get native floppy disk support built right into CircuitPython. To walk us through how they got where they are now, Ladyada and PT will drop by the Hack Chat. Be sure to come with your burning questions on flux transitions, MFM decoding, interface timing issues, and other arcana of spinning rust drives.

The Great Search: 20 to 30V low current booster for VFD or OLED

This weekend we got to play with a VFD tube. This ancient technology uses a gas tube to light up segments. In order to activate the fluorescence, we need to provide 20 to 30V DC on the segments. Not a lot of current, maybe 1mA each, but definitely needs to be a high voltage. For lower voltages, we could use a switched-cap converter. But for this, we'll need a proper booster! Let's find a small, low cost, simple, and available boost converter that can give us these bias voltages from 3 or 5V DC input. The Desk of Ladyada - Stemma Sunday & VFD Vunday

This weekend we got a LOT done with new and revised stemma boards! For revisions, we got, assembled, and tested the DRV2605 and ADS1x15 QT boards - both work great. we also put together and tested our qt py lipo BFF and it works great, for our final version we added a battery monitor resistor divider. in order to test the BFF we needed a power monitor like the INA219 and realized at like 1am that we didnt have an INA219 on us, so we ended up bringing up the INA228 prototype we had and wrote a quick driver for it. Unfortunately the INA228 is totally unavailable so it won't be in the shop soon. finally, we got a shipment of some samd21e18's in - from an order over 6 months ago! so we can do some more trinkeys - one trinkey that we wanted to put together for a while was an 'ice tube trinkey' - with a single digit VFD display. First up? figure out pinouts and voltages for this cute IV-3 tube! - then we can wrap it up in a circuit board design. reading mac 800k floppies, more complex than you'd think!

part of our floppy quest is we want to read mac 800k floppies - partially because there's a lotta good content out there on 800k floppies, and partially because we are still heading towards imaging the prince floppy (which, being 800k formatted made it a bit of a pain to read). 1.4MB floppies on mac are easily readable because by the time they got to 1.4MB apple stopped being clever with their disk formatting. but 800K floppies are really clever/freaky! unlike ibm pc formatting, there are not a fixed number of sectors per track. there's four groupings of tracks, and there are MORE sectors on the outer tracks (tracks 0 thru 31) than on the innermost sectors (64 thru 79). thats because there's technically more surface area on the outer edges of the disc where the lower number tracks live. mac floppies also rotate at different speeds depending on the track, which is also a joy. given its quite hard to find and control those old floppy drives compared to our bog-standard 'shugart 34 pin' pc types, there's incentive to try to get these to read cleanly on cheap and available hardware. (apple superdrives are...not cheap. no not that superdrive, the OTHER one) but the problem remains: the inner tracks have flux pulses that are significantly longer than the outermost tracks, because if we have a flux-per-inch limit, then we have to spend more time to traverse that distance on the inner tracks. and ibm pc mfm-optimized drives do not like this: they really expect the flux to change on very specific timebases: about 2us, 3us and 4us -ish. and once you start reading those longer pulses they get into 10 or 11us and that is much longer than the drive and media expect. firstly, the HD diskette isn't really meant to encode such long pulses, and secondly the disk drive automatic gain control starts getting amped up after 5 or 6us and thinks it must have lost a pulse, so it ends up reading old/weak flux inversions and 'splits' the longer pulse into 2 or 3 ghost fragments. the flux decoder is getting extra bits where it ought not, and gives up. we're going to order some true DD diskettes to see if that helps with the first issue. for the second issue, we tried setting the DENSITY input low but that didnt help - we're thinking we could try to detect spurious pulses to try and repair the GCR cells during flux read. hopefully we'll figure something out? #adafruit #floppy #apple Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI - TE Board-Mount Reflow Terminal Blocks

This week's EYE ON NPI is gonna be a hit for anyone who has ever had to add terminal blocks to a design, then dealt with the frustrations and costs of having a mixed SMT/THM process. Presenting... TE Connectivity Board-Mount Surface Mount Reflow Terminal Blocks (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/te-connectivity-amp/board-mount-reflow-terminal-blocks). Yes! Almost everyone has created a design that had a raw-wire to board connection. And a super popular way to make a flexible but durable connection with a range of wire thicknesses is to use the tried-and-true Terminal Block (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/terminal-blocks-wire-to-board/371). Digi-Key carries thousands of different terminal blocks in all sizes, pitches and configuration. Multiple rows! Plug type! But they all tend to be through-hole type. Not surprising, because there's a lot of mechanical torque on the connector when twisting, and also a lot of current passes through these connectors - they're often used for power supplies, and motors, that can draw amps. Given that they are through hole, a selective, manual or wave-soldering step is required for manufacture. (https://blog.adafruit.com/2014/03/26/ace-production-selective-solder-kiss-102il-apex-expo-adafruitapex-ipcshow-ipcshow-apexexpo/) And believe us, while these machines are totally awesome - they also require a lot of maintenance and time to run. (https://blog.adafruit.com/2018/07/02/programming-the-crickit-for-selective-soldering-a-deep-dive-part-3-adafruit-crickit-manufacturing-selectivesoldering/) So we try very hard to go with SMT-only processes: it's a lot faster and cheaper to only use one machine than to use two machines where boards have to move through two machines. We've used some "SMT Terminal blocks" before in products like on our buckaroo bonsai (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4534), which only needs 2 wires connected, and low power ones at that. Since hauling all the PCBs to the selective for just two pins is a total pain, we figured its better to go with this 'side insert' type. It works fairly well but doesn't have the adjustability we love with the cage-type terminal blocks. Which is why we are diggin' this series from TE, available in various pitches (3.5mm, 3.81mm or 5mm) and pin counts, from 2 to 7 pins. They look just like your everyday terminal blocks, but with flat rectangular pads that are bend 90 degrees to the back of the package, and mechanical shear/locating dots that will keep the connector from lifting up. They're even packaged in a chunky tape and reel, ready for use in your machine line. Note that even with the locator posts and large pads, you'll still want to make sure that you don't have a lot of force coming in from the front: The posts will protect against torque from the top but probably can't help much if they are lifted up from the front. If you only need a couple terminal blocks in your design and want to save process costs - or if there's a reason you can't go with a through-hole block - these TE Board-Mount Reflow Terminal Blocks (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/te-connectivity-amp/board-mount-reflow-terminal-blocks) will do great. And, they're available and in stock at Digi-Key right now! Order today for immediate delivery, so you can be twistin' and terminatin' by tomorrow afternoon.
