EYE on NPI - Molex FIRST® Robotics Components Cable Kit

This week's EYE ON NPI is FIRST in it's class - it's the Molex FIRST Robotics Components Cable Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/nddt5cvr), designed specifically for the thousands of high school students who are participating in FIRST robotics classes and competitions (https://www.firstinspires.org/). This box comes chock-full of 2 and 3-conductor color coded cables, with different pitches and contacts. If there's one thing we remember from our explorations in robotics (or, heck, even watching robotics shows on TV) it's that mechanical connections are a huge concern. You can have the fastest bot, with the most flawless code, and all will be for naught if your power cable comes loose, or a sensor line is shorted to ground. A lot of folks learn about cable crimping to make custom cables - hey we even have a tutorial video on it (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/04/02/new-video-crimping-connectors-collins-lab-notes-adafruit-collinslabnotes/). But here's the thing - even if you have a great crimping tool, it's extremely hard to do as good a job as a auto-crimping machine. You have to strip the wire perfectly, insert it into the tool, and press down with just the right amount of force. It's hard to get the crimp to be strong enough to grip the wire strands and cable cover but not so tight that it cuts into the housing. As we've gotten older, we've stopped trying to crimp cables, and instead we go with pre-crimped cables or housing + 'raw wire' sets like these (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3142). And that's what Molex has done here. They've chatted with FIRST robotics teams, including ones they sponsor, to figure out what cables are they using. Turns out they like the Molex SL Modular system (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/molex/sl-modular-connectors). Then, they put together a low cost kit with a whole mess of cables and housings that will let you outfit a robot with power, servo, and sensor wires easily. You can check out the unboxing on YouTube, with Jonathan and Alan, where they go through each cable and what it's good for. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwokT0HmnB8) This cable set is good for any FIRST robotics team and it's plenty good for any home or company robotics or mechatronics project. It's also a great deal where you get a bunch of cables made by Molex themselves, at better prices than sketchy knockoffs! Digi-Key has tons of the Molex FIRST Robotics Components Cable Kits in stock right now for immediate shipment (https://www.digikey.com/short/nddt5cvr) - order today and you can be wiring up your robot by tomorrow afternoon.

💾 Real time MFM floppy decoding in arduino 💾

OK more floppy fun, this time with jepler helping out - we're doing some cross-platform code sharing where the mfm decoding C code is going to be the same for arduino and circuitpython. jepler wrote up the mfm-decoding-and-crc-verifying for circuitpython and it was pretty easy to integrate it into arduino so that we can not just read flux data but the actual binary data! here we've got a simple floppy track dumper that goes from track 0 to 80, alternating sides, and prints the hex and ascii output. and, now you can see why we went with text files as a test bed - its very easy to see that our cross-sector reading is correct because the text continues smoothly from one to the other. this means we're getting close to being able to access the file system in arduino which means we are ONE STEP CLOSER to building a project ladyada has wanted since she was a teenager (can you guess what it is?) anyways, code is here for the curious https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Floppy/blob/main/examples/mfm_test/mfm_test.ino #arduino #floppy #retro @Arduino Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

using tinyusb and arduino to make a USB mass storage floppy 💾 drive

woohoo, we got on-the-fly mfm decoding working so we have fluxes converted to bytes, and all the sectors are verifying right. wouldn't it be neat if we could use tinyusb's mass-storage class to make a usb floppy drive? tinyusb is an adafruit-sponsored open source usb stack that lets a microcontroller act like just about any usb device: like a keyboard or mouse or midi or disk drive. the latter is what we're most interested in - and all we have to do is tell USB MSD how many sectors we've got (18 per track, 80 tracks, 2 sides) and supply the 512 byte sectors when we get a SCSI READ10 callback. bam, it 'just works' as windows still recognizes and supports FAT12 devices! we can open up and skim through the text files we've copied over earlier, and look who phrack 49 had an interview with! #phrack #adafruit #floppy Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

native floppy disk support COMING SOON to circuitpython!

jepler just tossed us a build of circuitpython with the new native 'adafruit_floppy' module which implements MFM decoding 'on the fly' to provide python-native filesystem support for floppy drives! yep, you can now store files and code that is read or executed off of a floppy disk. we whipped up a quick demo that lists the files on a disk and pages through any textfiles it finds, and tossed on a copy of phrack 49 http://phrack.org/issues/49/1.html - its a total classic - we were able to page through the whole thing to verify the FAT12 filesystem works as expected! next up, file writes? #adafruit #floppy #textfiles Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: Dual NPN in SOT-363 for ESP32

For the ESP32 Pico QT Py, we will be including a CP2102N (covered a few weeks ago!) to do USB to serial conversion. We also need a dual NPN transistor to do the funky reset/boot toggle required to reset the ESP32 into bootloading mode. On our Feathers, we used two SOT-23's but we have so little space, we'd like to find something the same size as our BSS138 duals we use on STEMMA QT sensor boards! Desk of Ladyada - A Quiver of QT's

This weekend we cranked through 3.5 QT Py designs (we didnt finish routing one, its a toughie!) - we already make SAMD21, RP2040 and ESP32-S2 and we wanted to add some more chips to the mix: ESP32-S3 (dual core version of the S2), ESP32 Pico (OG ESP with built in flash/psram), ESP32-C3 (Risc-V wifi!) and nRF52840 (BLE wonder-chip from Nordic). the last one is what we didn't get to finish routing because its a particularly tough one. The other 3 worked out fine with a 4 layer PCB. We also designed a few 'BFF' boards - that fit onto a QT Py like a shield. Finally, we did get our floppy featherwing and adapter/breakout in, which lets us clean up our floppy wiring - we'll be able to do more floppy stuff with less mess! hey everyone! after taking care of some fruit-biz-stuff and releasing some exciting new products, we're back to fun...FLOPPY FUN! we want to add floppy writing support but our wiring harness was a little unwieldly - thankfully our floppy featherwing we designed last week arrived and after some quick soldering and pin define changes, it works just as well. now we can continue on our floppy journey - expect MORE 💾💾💾 soon as we continue development. Watch and star this github repo to get updates as they happen https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Floppy :) low cost and easily available floppy interface hardware, part 9! pico power https://youtu.be/hcgtolaM_6g https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/low-cost-and-easily-available-floppy-interface-hardware-part-9-pico-power/ Cross-platform interfacing hardware for floppy disks, part 8 - PINK TIME! https://youtu.be/OpAN5FSmPBw https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/cross-platform-interfacing-hardware-for-floppy-disks-part-8-pink-time/ YAY! floppy disk interfacing part 7, a floppy flux milestone! https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/yay-floppy-disk-interfacing-part6-a-floppy-flux-milestone/ https://youtu.be/IrSwMuFk-2c reading floppy disk data part 6, MFM sector decoding https://youtu.be/mE-77nEXbGc https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-6-mfm-sector-decoding/ reading raw floppy disk data part 5, at night the greaseweazles come https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/reading-raw-floppy-disk-data-part-5-at-night-the-greaseweazles-come/ https://youtu.be/e6v7Q4h5JBM interfacing with floppy disks at low level, part 4 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/30/interfacing-with-floppy-disks-at-low-level-part-4/ https://youtu.be/a-zH9wdNwnE Reading floppy disk data, part 3! itsa pulse party https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/29/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-3-itsa-pulse-party/ https://youtu.be/kynoLRQpDnU Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 2 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-2/ https://youtu.be/frnJ7pWr5Zg Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 1… https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-1/ https://youtu.be/ceyM6vYpT74 Adafruit Floppy is a project to make a flexible, full-stack, open source hardware/software device for reading, archiving, accessing and duplicating floppy disk media. EYE on NPI - Jonard Tools’ Technician's Tool Bag Backpack

This week's EYE ON NPI is the first of the year, and we love to celebrate a NEW year with a NEW product - this week it's Jonard Tools’ Technician's Tool Bag Backpack (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/j/jonard-tools/technicians-tool-bag-backpack), an awesome bag that is perfect for technicians or engineers who carry a lot of tools to job sites or back and forth from work. Jonard Tools (https://jonard.com/) is right outside of White Plains, NY, so we can practically call them next-door neighbors! We love to feature new companies and especially ones here in NY state. This backpack is super beefy - it's basically a toolbox but with straps. Instead of throwing stuff into a duffle bag, or courier bag, and then digging through it desperately trying to find the wrench or pliers you need, it's got pockets for everything so you can always locate the tool without sticking your mitts into a bag of sharp and pointy things. Some highlights from this bag: * Durable fabric - the bag is made from really tough fabric that is puncture and weather resistant * Rubberized bottom - it's totally waterproof, and dense which means its both protected no matter what its on top of or if it's used outside AND it sits flat without tilting over * Clip for a measuring tape - this is so genius, there's a metal clip for any kind of tape to securely attach on the outside * Outer front has thick elastic on front with 10 slots for quick tool storage, and a big hook-and-loop (sometimes referred to as Velcro) patch * Detachable webbing loop for electrical tape (or other tape) * Like half a dozen sewn-webbing carabiner-clip points * Top front zipper pocket with hard shell and soft lining for safety glasses (or sunglasses / regular glasses!) * Front pocket for paperwork or a small laptop (or phone) * Big-ass main pack with dozens of pockets and loops including TWO multimeter pockets with a hook-and-loop top to secure the probes * Strong zippers on each pocket with nice rubbery pull tabs * Padded shoulder-blade sections on back with breathable mesh * Padded and curved straps with a chest-clip * Two handles on the top for each side so you can yank or carry even if open * Lots of padding between each pocket so you don't get accidentally poked by a screwdriver! * Free stickers, who doesn't love that? Check out the video which goes through all of these features step by step (https://www.digikey.com/en/videos/j/jonard-tools/jonard-tools-technicians-tool-bag-backpack) This is a really nice backpack - it's really clear that the folks at Jonard use and carry tools all the time and decided to invent the ULTIMATE technician backpack. It's full of little details that I would not have come up with, but once I realize what they are it's like "wow that is so handy!" We're going to give this to our facilities team here at Adafruit so when they travel between floors to fix stuff they can just grab the backpack and have all their tools with them for whatever problem comes up. The Jonard Tools Technician's Tool Bag Backpack ( https://www.digikey.com/short/307z0ftp) is also an excellent deal - at under $100, it's extremely well made, and will last decades. Digi-Key has this in stock right now for immediate shipment. It would make a great gift for a technician you know, either from a friend, family member or of course, a team-mate. Order today (https://www.digikey.com/short/307z0ftp) and Digi-Key will send this pack packin' same day for shipment to your home.

Desk of Ladyada - Full Time Floppy Fun!

The week between Christmas and New Years is usually a time when we get to play with some new technology since a lot of people are out and many meetings are postponed. but this year we played with some *old* technology! we tried hooking up a 3.5" floppy drive to a microcontroller to see if we can read data from it. we learned a lot about floppy interfacing and also made a library that will connect with greaseweazle software to dump disk images using low cost hardware like the rp2040 pico The Great Search - Floppy Disk Drive Power Connectors! https://www.digikey.com/short/f0vp4zzh OK so one challenge we've disk-covered (ha) doing floppy interfacing is that you need to really power them right. low cost and easily available floppy interface hardware, part 9! pico power

time to wrap up today's hacking! we had a goal of finishing today with a raspberry pi pico board being able to read out flux off a floppy disk, and here we are: this is a ultra-low cost dev board, only $4 and 15K in stock at Digi-Key https://www.digikey.com/short/f2d841fn - a little soldering is required to attach header but the wiring is straight forward: start at GP2 and connect all the pins thru to GP14 in a row, skipping over the ground pads (dont forget to connect one of the grounds of course) we just tested dumping our 1.44 HD diskette just fine. in the next week we'll try to add flux writing support (we've only done reading so far), trying out HFS DD (so we can image @anildash's prince floppy), completing a PR to greaseweazle and maybe trying out the disk ii connection. a great way to kick off 2022, happy new year! #adafruit #raspberrypi #rp2040 Cross-platform interfacing hardware for floppy disks, part 8 - PINK TIME! https://youtu.be/OpAN5FSmPBw https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/cross-platform-interfacing-hardware-for-floppy-disks-part-8-pink-time/ YAY! floppy disk interfacing part 7, a floppy flux milestone! https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/yay-floppy-disk-interfacing-part6-a-floppy-flux-milestone/ https://youtu.be/IrSwMuFk-2c reading floppy disk data part 6, MFM sector decoding https://youtu.be/mE-77nEXbGc https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-6-mfm-sector-decoding/ reading raw floppy disk data part 5, at night the greaseweazles come https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/reading-raw-floppy-disk-data-part-5-at-night-the-greaseweazles-come/ https://youtu.be/e6v7Q4h5JBM interfacing with floppy disks at low level, part 4 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/30/interfacing-with-floppy-disks-at-low-level-part-4/ https://youtu.be/a-zH9wdNwnE Reading floppy disk data, part 3! itsa pulse party https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/29/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-3-itsa-pulse-party/ https://youtu.be/kynoLRQpDnU Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 2 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-2/ https://youtu.be/frnJ7pWr5Zg Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 1… https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-1/ https://youtu.be/ceyM6vYpT74 Adafruit Floppy is a project to make a flexible, full-stack, open source hardware/software device for reading, archiving, accessing and duplicating floppy disk media. now that we have successful flux reads, its time to get flexible! we've swapped our SAMD51 feather board out for an RP2040 feather. not only is this feather a lovely pink shade, but it comes with a totally different chipset. oh no, do we need to start over completely with a new toolchain, timer configuration and dma library? nope! our code is hardware agnostic enough that with pin name tweaks and a couple ifdefs, we can use it just fine with greaseweazle again. so now our library has 2 chips it can use, very handy when there's a silicon shortage going round. next up, could we use the $4 raspberry pi pico board??? stay tuned :) YAY! floppy disk interfacing part 7, a floppy flux milestone! https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/yay-floppy-disk-interfacing-part6-a-floppy-flux-milestone/ https://youtu.be/IrSwMuFk-2c reading floppy disk data part 6, MFM sector decoding https://youtu.be/mE-77nEXbGc https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-6-mfm-sector-decoding/ reading raw floppy disk data part 5, at night the greaseweazles come https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/reading-raw-floppy-disk-data-part-5-at-night-the-greaseweazles-come/ https://youtu.be/e6v7Q4h5JBM interfacing with floppy disks at low level, part 4 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/30/interfacing-with-floppy-disks-at-low-level-part-4/ https://youtu.be/a-zH9wdNwnE Reading floppy disk data, part 3! itsa pulse party https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/29/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-3-itsa-pulse-party/ https://youtu.be/kynoLRQpDnU Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 2 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-2/ https://youtu.be/frnJ7pWr5Zg Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 1… https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-1/ https://youtu.be/ceyM6vYpT74 Adafruit Floppy is a project to make a flexible, full-stack, open source hardware/software device for reading, archiving, accessing and duplicating floppy disk media. YAY! floppy disk interfacing part6, a floppy flux milestone! part 7

whew! so, turns out it was an underspec'ed power supply. so now we know, 500mA is not enough for a floppy drive you really need 1A. but with that out of the way, we were able to cleanly read all 160 tracks of flux from a floppy disk! this particular disk is one that our friend hid in that place that one time, and we've been waiting to be able to see what's on it... will we be able to extract the sectors and discover what secrets lie within??!? reading floppy disk data part 6, MFM sector decoding

we fixed some track seeking code errors we had, and now we're able to start getting data from greaseweazle. since the diskette we've got is an ibm pc 1.44MB format we can use the built in ibm pc MFM format decoding module. the good news is that its able to decode *some* tracks...but its not able to decode all of them, like it'll read 10 good sectors in a row, then just cant find any sectors at all - which is a little suspicious. makes us wonder if we got the flux transfer and index pulse encoding right, or if its a formatting thing, because the diskette is readable on a computer with a usb drive connected. reading raw floppy disk data part 5, at night the greaseweazles come https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/01/01/reading-raw-floppy-disk-data-part-5-at-night-the-greaseweazles-come/ https://youtu.be/e6v7Q4h5JBM interfacing with floppy disks at low level, part 4 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/30/interfacing-with-floppy-disks-at-low-level-part-4/ https://youtu.be/a-zH9wdNwnE Reading floppy disk data, part 3! itsa pulse party https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/29/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-3-itsa-pulse-party/ https://youtu.be/kynoLRQpDnU Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 2 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-2/ https://youtu.be/frnJ7pWr5Zg Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 1… https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-1/ https://youtu.be/ceyM6vYpT74 Adafruit Floppy is a project to make a flexible, full-stack, open source hardware/software device for reading, archiving, accessing and duplicating floppy disk media. reading raw floppy disk data part 5, at night the greaseweazles come

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! we're ticking down the new year safe and sound here at home together, with a big mug of cocoa, and a lot of floppy hackin'. tonight we started adding 'greaseweazle' support to our arduino floppy library. this will let us use any fast-enough arduino hardware with a fabulous open source flux parsing tool that is written in python. basically, we send the flux pattern for each track over usb serial for it to be parsed or saved on a computer. we have been adding each command throughout the day: enabling the motor, running a bandwidth check, setting drive parameters, etc. we are halfway through the track reading code - we got the read data arriving safely at the computer, but it seems that there is a way to 'encode' the index pulse into the flux stream and we have to figure out what polarity and data format its expecting. still, feeling really close! hopefully will be able to dump our first disk image this weekend :) code is here while its being worked on https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Floppy/blob/main/examples/greaseweazle/greaseweazle.ino interfacing with floppy disks at low level, part 4 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/30/interfacing-with-floppy-disks-at-low-level-part-4/ https://youtu.be/a-zH9wdNwnE Reading floppy disk data, part 3! itsa pulse party https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/29/reading-floppy-disk-data-part-3-itsa-pulse-party/ https://youtu.be/kynoLRQpDnU Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 2 https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-2/ https://youtu.be/frnJ7pWr5Zg Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 1… https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/12/28/adding-floppy-disk-support-to-circuitpython-step-1/ https://youtu.be/ceyM6vYpT74 #floppy #adafruit #retro Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

interfacing with floppy disks at low level, part 4

we're going to back up a little in this part - we have MFM and index pulse data coming out of our chonky panasonic 3.5" floppy drive and capturing that well. but now we're a little curious of how folks are going to use this if floppy drives arent available. we had to pay a pretty penny for this drive, second hand, and that makes it tougher for more folks to get drives and use them to read floppies. we did have a USB floppy drive (originally ordered to read out our mavica camera images) and now we're curious how it works so we opened it up! inside is a samsung SFD-321S which is we'll take as the "S"MT version of the SFD-321B datasheet we read earlier. (we couldn't find a datasheet for this 'S version tho). Instead of the 34-pin IDC there's a 26-pin 1mm FPC connected to a cheapy adapter board with a single sanded-off 28-tssop chip. the chip is handling the Mass Storage - FDD conversion all on is own. but it's too smart for us! we don't want MSD, we want those delicious flux transitions. thankfully this nice person posted up the pinout for us https://jestineyong.com/examining-and-testing-a-small-universal-fdc-to-usb-adapter/ and when we probed the index and data lines while accessing the disk, we found nice MFM traces coming out. next up we're going to design a quicky adapter from 26-pin FPC to 34-pin IDC pin header & breadboard. (we did find some converter PCBs but all going the opposite way!) part 3: https://youtu.be/kynoLRQpDnU part 2: https://youtu.be/frnJ7pWr5Zg part 1: https://youtu.be/ceyM6vYpT74 #floppy #disk #retro ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Reading floppy disk data, part 3! itsa pulse party

OK so part 1 we got our wiring worked out and found an index pulse. Part 2 is we started getting MFM data coming out. Now we're capturing pulses with gpio bitbanging, and storing all the pulse widths in a large memory array. each track has a 500Khz signal, and outputs data every 5 Hz, so we have a max of 100K samples worst case. since we're using a cortex arm with 192K~256K of RAM (the RP2040 has 264K!), its no biggie to store all the pulses in an array. here we are reading track 1 and binning the pulses: we're seeing three pulse width bins stand out, about 40 count, 62 count and 85 count. but there's also a couple ultra short pulses (25 count) and an ultra long pulse (~200 count). each count is about 48ns-ish so that translates to 2us, 3us and 4us bins, with a few 1us and one or two 10us+. not exactly sure whats up with those outliers. do we ignore them? are they start-of-data markers? We also noticed that track 0 has way more unusually long or unbinned pulses, like almost 100 different values. its a little mysterious, we'll have to investigate if there's something special about track 0!
