This weekend we dove headfirst into getting fluxengine and our 5.25" disk drive working with the floppy featherwing. good news is that we were able to add support to Adafruit_Floppy and with a little refactoring, add 360K disk MFM decoding. we thought we didn't have any DOS floppies but we did find one in a pile (mouse driver). we then used fluxengine to read the data off to verify before implementing mass storage support. once we got that working we spent a few hours on C64 disk reading, these disks are kinda odd and not formatted like 'normal' diskettes - there is a different encoding scheme and variable sectors per track! we also designed a feather esp32 v2 and a smol handheld game BFF for QT Py. 5.25 inch 360K DOS Floppy drive as a USB key with fluxengine support out of the way, we're on to refactoring our adafruit_floppy library code to support this old-fangled 360K double-density disk http://fileformats.archiveteam.org/wiki/PC-DOS_360K_format this format was pretty common back in ze day. it's not too different from our more common 3.5" 1.44MB in that it has MFM encoding, two sides and FAT12 formatted. but it does have a quarter of the capacity as it has half the tracks (40 not 80) and half the sectors (9 not 18). so, a little refactoring this afternoon and now our USB mass storage example is happy to make this drive appear as a 360KB USB drive. we can access the files just fine - this may be the first time someone's developed a USB MSD controller for these older disks, it's like a really really heavy usb key :) #floppy #usb #retro Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

having converted MFM pulses to sectors, you may be surprised to know its only a couple lines of code to have a microcontroller access the disk and underlying file structure. we use SdFat library, an SD card interface library that is really good, and subclass it to provide new functions for reading (and later, writing) sectors. then you can just treat the drive like a very small SD card. why does this work? turns out SD cards are pretty much the same as extremely large floppy drives: blocks of data are 512 bytes each, and both are formatted with the same kind of filesystem structure called FAT that was invented in 1977 for floppies but persists to this day. This week's EYE ON NPI is FIRST in it's class - it's the Molex FIRST Robotics Components Cable Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/nddt5cvr), designed specifically for the thousands of high school students who are participating in FIRST robotics classes and competitions (https://www.firstinspires.org/). This box comes chock-full of 2 and 3-conductor color coded cables, with different pitches and contacts. If there's one thing we remember from our explorations in robotics (or, heck, even watching robotics shows on TV) it's that mechanical connections are a huge concern. You can have the fastest bot, with the most flawless code, and all will be for naught if your power cable comes loose, or a sensor line is shorted to ground. A lot of folks learn about cable crimping to make custom cables - hey we even have a tutorial video on it (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/04/02/new-video-crimping-connectors-collins-lab-notes-adafruit-collinslabnotes/). But here's the thing - even if you have a great crimping tool, it's extremely hard to do as good a job as a auto-crimping machine. You have to strip the wire perfectly, insert it into the tool, and press down with just the right amount of force. It's hard to get the crimp to be strong enough to grip the wire strands and cable cover but not so tight that it cuts into the housing. As we've gotten older, we've stopped trying to crimp cables, and instead we go with pre-crimped cables or housing + 'raw wire' sets like these (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3142). And that's what Molex has done here. They've chatted with FIRST robotics teams, including ones they sponsor, to figure out what cables are they using. Turns out they like the Molex SL Modular system (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/molex/sl-modular-connectors). Then, they put together a low cost kit with a whole mess of cables and housings that will let you outfit a robot with power, servo, and sensor wires easily. We also need a dual NPN transistor to do the funky reset/boot toggle required to reset the ESP32 into bootloading mode. On our Feathers, we used two SOT-23's but we have so little space, we'd like to find something the same size as our BSS138 duals we use on STEMMA QT sensor boards! This weekend we cranked through 3.5 QT Py designs (we didnt finish routing one, its a toughie!) - we already make SAMD21, RP2040 and ESP32-S2 and we wanted to add some more chips to the mix: ESP32-S3 (dual core version of the S2), ESP32 Pico (OG ESP with built in flash/psram), ESP32-C3 (Risc-V wifi!) and nRF52840 (BLE wonder-chip from Nordic). the last one is what we didn't get to finish routing because its a particularly tough one. The other 3 worked out fine with a 4 layer PCB. We also designed a few 'BFF' boards - that fit onto a QT Py like a shield. Finally, we did get our floppy featherwing and adapter/breakout in, which lets us clean up our floppy wiring - we'll be able to do more floppy stuff with less mess!
