OK we're going to be fabbin the KB2040 board tomorrow! Yay PCBs arrived and we've got all the parts. Last thing I have to do for the team is hand off the tester. Over the weekend I've been doing a few testers over and it started getting annoying how much copypasta we have in our testers. So I wrote a Testbed library that sort of encapsulates a lot of the common code that is reused over and over. This week's EYE ON NPI is clicky-clacky with Johnson Electric’s range of linear DC solenoids (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/j/johnson-electric/linear-dc-solenoids) in various sizes and voltage ratings. Solenoids are a nifty type of motion control element - most folks think of motors or servos when thinking about motion control (and Johnson Electric does make motors too) but motors and servos are best used for rotation motion. You can convert them to linear motion but usually you need to gear them down a lot to get a reasonable torque - force conversion. Some use a rack-and-pinion mechanism (https://learn.adafruit.com/rack-and-pinion-bot/overview) or a drive/lead screw (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadscrew). Solenoids provide a very easy to create a short but powerful linear force that is either on or off - you can't really be 'in the middle' of a solenoid actuation. Solenoids all work in the same basic way: there's a toroidal coil of copper that forms an electromagnet. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solenoid) As current is passed through the coil, it pulls the ferrous slug into the coil with near-instant force. When the power is released, the electromagnet de-powers and the slug can move freely. In this sense, all solenoids are pull-type. Sometimes, there's a return-spring that will pull the slug out to 'reset it' - these are push-pull type (https://www.adafruit.com/product/413) - but most solenoids, including these from Johnson, don't have the spring. Usually, whatever the solenoid is installed in provides the return pressure. Most solenoids we've seen are rectangular style, which tend to be sort of 'candy bar' shaped. The Johnson solenoids are more 'pancake style' - with a flatter and wider design that has less requirements on depth. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/j/johnson-electric/linear-dc-solenoids) Johnson makes a couple dozen of different solenoids with different voltages and sizes, we picked up two and one was about the size of a grape and the other the size of an orange. Common voltage ratings are 12V and 24V - the amount of current will vary with voltage since you still need the same amount of power per coil size. Usually the voltage is whatever the equipment is set up to provide. Note that solenoids require a lot of current, many amps whenever activating! Thankfully the power does not have to be very clean, so you can have a separate regulated supply just for your motion control. Finally, the Johnson Electric YouTube channel has a cool series of videos called "Interviews with Old Timers" where they interview employees that have been there for 50+ years, to hear what it was like when Hong Kong was first beginning to do manufacturing. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyzoR-XtR6M) There's some great historical information in there, we had a lot of fun watching them and looking at the old photos. Oooooh we are SO CLOSE to releasing wippersnapper I2C support! Lots of IoT platforms support analog or digital I/O - but the real stuff is in I2C sensors. We've started adding the scaffolding for I2C sensor support on the staging wippersnapper server. Here I've got a FunHouse board, connected to 'wipper, and when we go to add components there's an AHT20 part available! Next, the server requests an I2C scan to verify a valid address is on the bus, and once we create the component, two new feeds appear: one for temperature and one for humidity. ESP32-S3 mini modules make for an easy 'S3 Feather We just picked up some ESP32-S3 Mini modules from @digikey and, surprise! They are pin compatible with the S2 Mini modules. That means we were able to upgrade our ESP32-S2 Feather to use the newest dual-core+BLE chipset. All the pins have been tested, NeoPixel works and so does I2C. Last week we wrapped up the ESP32-S2 feather, and they're in the shop now. We made two versions, one with and one without a BME280 enviro sensor. Next up we'll do take 2 of this board, the TFT Feather - we've tested Arduino on it so now its time for CircuitPython. Our first attempt at the board definition has slow TFT redraw for bitmaps but we can fix it! Next we're adding some low power tweaks to make folks who want to have small quiescent power happy. There's also a new ESP32-S3 mini module engineering sample available, this chip is going to be the next big release from ESP and it has some nice improvements over the 'S2 The Great Search - LED Driver N-Channel MOSFET replacement https://www.digikey.com/short/qtj8zd4n Silicon shortages have been famous for the STM32 and ASIC droughts, but even simple mosfets have been harder and harder to find. This week's EYE ON NPI is like a good winter coat - waterproof, super rugged and looks great while doing it. This week we're back with another C&K Components product (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/ck-components) : what can we say, they make some great items, and best of all they're not affected by the silicon shortage, so they've got lots of parts in stock! The MPSR series from C&K are ruggedized magnetic proximity sensors, perfect for automotive sensors and indicators, industrial sensors, anti-tampering and other security and factory automation equipment. The MPSR series sensor and magnet are both sealed in a tough aluminum housing combined with stainless steel wire sleeves. This housing protects the sensors from the harsh environments they are commonly used in, whether oil, water, grease, or volatile chemicals and gases. Manufactured for quick and easy installation, the MPSR series also have a long-life cycle – lasting for more than 4 million actions – and a robust 30 V, 3 W rating. This variant of the ESP32-S2 Feather board comes with a TFT on top, it fits perfectly with room for some LEDs and two buttons on the top side. The bottom side has the ESP32-S2 mini with 4 MB flash and 2 MB PSRAM and support circuitry. For example, we have a lipo battery monitor and a BME280 soldered on - the demo here is showing data from those sensors on the TFT. Let's test two products at the same time! The OLED is 128x128 1.1" diagonal monochrom, and we've got it plugged into the other newp - a Feather ESP32-S2 with PSRAM. There's a cute lil vertical STEMMA QT connector in the middle which we can plug into to add more sensors and displays. For the STSPIN stepper breakout board, we need some current sense/limiting resistors. These are special resistors that are very low resistance but very high wattage, so they can dissipate the heat from the Resistance * Current^2. One thing we need to optimize for in this project is space over price - since the board size is fixed. So let's find the smallest current sense resistor we can, we might discover some interesting things! Ahh we are trying to finish some older projects off, this week we put together a KB2040 which we designed earlier this year It's the same size and pinout as a Pro Micro - for use with keyboard projects like this DIY one https://1upkeyboards.com/shop/keyboard-kits/macro-pads/sweet16-macro-pad-white/ We generated a pinout diagram to help us verify the muxing is all right, and we'll maybe try to get it in pink! The Great Search - Current Sense Resistors https://www.digikey.com/short/djch7b70 For the STSPIN stepper breakout board, we need some current sense/limiting resistors. These are special resistors that are very low resistance but very high wattage, so they can dissipate the heat from the Resistance * Current^2. One thing we need to optimize for in this project is space over price - since the board size is fixed.
