Last week we showed that the VL53L1X has the same shape and pinout as the VL53L0X, making it an easy addition to our collection of STEMMA QT boards. We ordered new boards with a different silkscreen and now its time to make a tester. This week's EYE ON NPI is a pal that fits right in your pocket, literally! It's the Pokit All-in-One Meter, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/pokit-innovations/pokit-meter) a miniature wireless multimeter, scope and datalogger. We've seen designs like this become more popular lately as many folks have phones on hand, which can act as a display (the display/UI is one of the more difficult and expensive elements of portable test equipment). When this one popped up on https://www.digikey.com/new we thought it would be worth checking out as it does a good job of matching enough desired specifications to be useful to a Maker or engineer. We like the mechanical design - it has got a cute retractable cable kit that you can pull out for use. The design of the probes is such that you can plug in optional and included micro-grabbers if desired, but the tips can be used as is. (We'll note that the micro grabbers don't fit into the body or anything so they need to be carried separately). While it's a tad large for a keychain, it isn't an outlandish size - it definitely could go into a purse or pocket without snagging. There's also a zipper pouch for those who like to keep their tools in a home. To work with any phone, it uses BLE for data transport. Unlikely many products we see, this doesn't use a rechargeable battery. Instead, the battery is an every day CR2032 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jauch-quartz/CR-2032-JAUCH-IB/13540138) which you can get replacements for at any hardware or corner shop. There's pros and cons to going with a primary cell, but we think this was probably a good choice as long as the battery level is well communicated to users. The processor inside is a Silabs EFR32BR13 wireless microcontroller (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/silicon-labs/EFR32BG13P732F512GM32-D/10135841) and a little bit of circuitry. Connecting is easy, after removing the battery tab, download and open the app, it will pair immediately - this went very smoothly. Then from the main screen you can select various functions. Most functions acted just the way you expect: continuity test, DC voltage measurement, temperature and resistance. There is a current measurement capability, which also means there's a fuse. You do get a spare fuse, and as most multimeters go, its something you'll probably mess up once by accidentally measuring in parallel. Thankfully the app warms you before going into current measurement mode. There's only one thing that folks should be aware of: there is an 'oscilloscope' mode but it really is more of a 'data capture' mode - the BLE link isn't fast enough to stream data, even triggered-signal data. Arguably, it's hard to do this reliably over BLE, but I think it is possible to have some data rate streamed, even if just to make it easier to verify that the right spot is probed - and it would be a really awesome feature. I think BLE 5 with large, non-acknowledged packets could do it. (https://www.novelbits.io/bluetooth-5-speed-maximum-throughput/) But perhaps it wouldn't work reliably on every model of phone. Hopefully next revision could do it since it would be such a killer feature! For something so small, it really does pack a good amount of capability, and while it would not replace your desktop scope or multimeter, it is a great addition to a dev kit. I could have really used something like this when traveling or at events! We're working on adding support for the I2C protocol to Adafruit.io WipperSnapper so people can use WipperSnapper to send data from their favorite I2C sensors to the internet, without writing a single line of code. We wanted to show off the first step, which is scanning for connected I2C devices over the I2C bus (over WiFi!). We carry all sorts of accelerometers in the Adafruit shop - for many folks, a +-2/4/8/16 or even 32g accelerometer is good enough for detecting motion and tilt. Sometimes we get super lucky and we can even get devices that are mechanically swappable. For example, the BME280/BMP280/DPS310 environmental sensors all share the same pinout. We also remembered our old friend the VL53L1X which shares the same pinout with the VL53L0X, which we got working this week thanks to ST's library. Finally, Analog Devices has thankfully settled on a pinout for their accelerometers, so we QTified it too! This week's EYE ON NPI is "ne-plus-ultra" (that's French for best-of-the-best) because we're featuring Broadcom's Ultra Violet SMT LEDs. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/broadcom-semi/3w-3535-surface-mount-uv-leds) UV LEDs had their 'day in the sun' this year, due to being used by many companies to perform UV surface sterilization, but they're really useful for many scientific purposes and its great to see these LEDs make it into a binned, surface mount, high current package. UV LEDs, are as you can expect, are LEDs that emit light in the UV band, which ranges from 10 to 400nm. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraviolet) Note that visible light is 400~700nm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light) so the range of the UV band is quite wide. UV light is 'higher power' than visible light - it's what is emitted from the sun that gives us sun burns, it is also mutagenic - so wear that sunscreen! Because there isn't a lot of it on Earth, but it can affect chemical bonds, it's very useful for when we want to control a chemical reaction such as UV curing or disinfection or bleaching, with pinpoint control. For example, 3D resin printers use UV lenses or lasers to selectively cure layers of a print with high precision - called stereolithography (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereolithography). It's also very popular in dentistry where hard composite resins are UV-cured quickly and safely (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dental_curing_light). We first started using UV lamps when doing in-house PCB etching at school - at the time we used a 15W UV fluorescent bulb (https://www.ladyada.net/library/pcb/inhouseetch.html) If you like getting your nails done with a strong and durable polish, you're probably familiar with using a UV lamp to cure a gel manicure in a minute or two (https://learn.adafruit.com/uv-manicure-lamp) and most recently we found that clear UV resins are great for making custom MX keycaps for mechanical keyboards (https://learn.adafruit.com/diy-decorative-resin-keycaps) Now, historically, folks have used UV fluorescent bulbs (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/lamps-cold-cathode-fluorescent-ccfl-uv/104) for getting UV light, but these are becoming less common in many use cases because UV CCFLs are cheap, but are delicate (made of glass), are physically large and hard to focus on a small area, dim over time, are hard to dispose of (they often contain mercury or other metals), require a complex ballast/driver, and can take a while to warm up. In contrast, UV LEDs are a great alternative with better precision, long life, and easy driving. These UV LEDs from Broadcom are 'true' UV LEDs (https://www.broadcom.com/products/leds-and-displays/ultraviolet-leds), and come binned for three different center frequencies: 365nm, 385nm and 395nm. When buying low cost LEDs, they often have some variation which can reduce efficiency in the desired band. And of course, the band has to be aligned with whatever you're curing or disinfecting. These would do the job admirably whenever you want a durable, long-lasting UV source with exactly the right emission spectrum, particularly when small space and high efficiency such as a battery-operated device is concerned.
