It is starting to get a bit chilly out, with beautiful fall weather. We've even switched from iced to hot coffees! We decided this week to take a look again at our favvy Feather, the M4 Express. It's a good dev board, but there's improvements we can make given the years of experience we've had with designing Feathers. First up we swapped the Micro USB to USB C. We bumped the 2MB flash to 8MB, and added a STEMMA QT plug at the end. We also put a MicroSD card slot on the bottom, like our STM32 Feather. Finally, we made a few low-power-friendly improvements! These are often used in microcontrollers as input to a PLL to generate a higher frequency internal clock that is more precise than an RC oscillator. Even tho these are not 'semiconductors' they've been quite hard to source! This weeks' EYE ON NPI is right on time, it's the ST VL53L5CX Time-of-Flight Ranging Sensor, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/vl53l5cx-time-of-flight-ranging-sensor) the latest in a long line of successful and popular ToF ranging sensors. These sensors have gone through many revisions, and each version has improved on the prior one. Starting with the VL6180X (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/VL6180XV0NR-1/4854909?s=N4IgTCBcDaIGoBkBsBGAHABgBogLoF8g), the VL53L0X (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/VL53L0CXV0DH-1/6023691?s=N4IgTCBcDaIG4BsCsBmBAGAxgDxAXQF8g) and VL53L1X (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/VL53L1CXV0FY-1/8258055?s=N4IgTCBcDaIGoBkCsBmBBGAwgDRAXQF8g), these sensors increase the range, speed, accuracy with each generation. Each sensor works the same way: they have a tiny near-IR laser that emits light and is bounced off nearby objects to determine the distance. The sensor has extra-ordinary time sensing, so it can measure the ‘time of flight’ between the photon emitted by the laser, and when it arrives bounced back. Thus, they are called “Time of Flight / ToF” sensors and the series of boards are called ST FlightSense (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/optical-sensors-distance-measuring/542?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANohxwDsATBALqEAOALlCCAC%2BwoA). STMicroelectronics' VL53L5CX is a state of the art, time-of-flight (ToF), laser-ranging sensor enhancing the ST FlightSense product family. Housed in a miniature reflowable package, it integrates a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array, physical infrared filters, and diffractive optical elements (DOE) to achieve the best-ranging performance in various ambient lighting conditions with a range of cover glass materials. The use of a DOE above the vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) allows a square FoV to be projected onto the scene. The reflection of this light is focused by the receiver lens onto a SPAD array. Unlike conventional IR sensors, the VL53L5CX uses ST's latest generation, direct ToF technology, which allows absolute distance measurement whatever the target color and reflectance. It provides accurate ranging up to 400 cm and can work at fast speeds (60 Hz), which makes it the fastest, multizone, miniature ToF sensor currently on the market...the VL53L5CX is able to detect different objects within the FoV with a distance information range up to 60 cm. The Histogram also provides immunity to cover glass crosstalk beyond 60 cm. Multizone distance measurements are possible up to 8x8 zones with a wide 61° diagonal FoV that can be reduced by software. The big updates in the L5 version is a new diffraction element which allows the SPAD to measure an 8x8 zone of distance measurements, which makes it more like a spatial LIDAR than a point-LIDAR. It's not super-fast, but you can use it for gesture recognition and possibly simple robotics-navigation. The price is not much different than before, and you still get 4 meter range. Another nice thing about this sensor is ST is starting to release 'platform agnostic' sensor drivers, including an 'ultra lite driver' for this chip that is easy to port to other platforms (https://www.st.com/en/imaging-and-photonics-solutions/vl53l5cx.html#tools-software) without heavy IDE/toolchain/chipset dependencies. Our OV5640 camera is working great, but we notice it does heat up quite a bit. We want to add a little heatsink option to our breakout so that the camera can be cooled off a little while it's running. Last week when we got some OV5640 camera samples we noticed these modules have a built in voice coil motor for focusing. How neat! We followed the app guide to load in the autofocus firmware over I2C, and then over I2C you can request the camera to try and autofocus. It works very well, you can even hear the little click when it changes focus. Last week we took a look at an OV5640 camera sample that had a voice-coil auto focus motor inside. At the time we didn't get it working, turns out the breakout we were using had some shorted connection to the VM pins. We happened to have a camera breakout PCB we're working on so we put one together and found that with a little wiring we could follow the app note to load a firmware file through I2C and then get I2C working. Now we can redesign our camera breakout to support every camera module type we've seen. This week's EYE ON NPI video is very illuminating! It's the C&K KLS Series Illuminated Pushbutton series. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/ck-components/kls-series-illuminated-pushbutton) These very handsome buttons are clicky, glowy and come in a few different configurations depending on customer needs. The switches come in either SPDT or DPDT type, both momentary and latching on/off type, and with concave, flat or large flat clear tops. All of the ones available for purchase contain both red and green LEDs, so the front can be lit red, yellow or green. Note that there are 3 parallel LED inside, so you need 60mA per LED segment, (https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about-leds) but the front does illuminate nice and evenly which is something cheaper buttons struggle with. The tops are also easily removable, so you can put a label underneath, and they're nice crystal clear, so you'll get nice even illumination with an easy-to-clean cover. These are really high quality buttons with an excellent clicky feel and a durable build, they're perfect for A/V or industrial equipment where a clean user interface is important. Thanks to jeplers intrepid and unyielding efforts, we now have OV5640 camera module support in CircuitPython. This is a snazzy 5 MPixel camera module which can do JPEG encoding on-chip and auto levels. It's a rather nice camera and given you can always use it at lower res like 320x240, we think this is our pick. We got a few samples from the camera manufacturer and interestingly enough, we got one version with a kinda fisheye lens (that works fine) and one version with a pinhole lens and a SECRET! Time flies (or fugit irreparabile tempus as the cool Hellenistic teens might say) when you're enjoying this EYE ON NPI - this week we're featuring the Raltron Crystal Resonators Engineering Design Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raltron/crystal-resonators-engineering-design-kit), a kit of 66 different crystal oscillators in various packages, frequencies and load capacitances. Crystals! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal) They're so cool sounding, who doesn't love sparkly rocks? While we usually associate the word with gems, bedazzling, and new-age healing, crystals made of piezo-electric material (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_oscillator) are great for generating precise sinusoids of a desired frequency. We need these to keep our electronics ticking away at the right frequency. And, somewhat annoyingly, each chip seems to require a totally different frequency. So you end up getting a lot of different crystals in your proto-typing bin. For example, 'timing' crystals tend to be 32.768 KHz, because if you have a 15 bit counter that keeps track of each oscillation, you'll count out one second every overflow. These crystals are super common, used in micro's for low-power or PLL-syncing, also in real-time-clocks that need to run on small coin cell batteries for years. So, 32KHz is maybe the most common value used that we've seen - this kit gives you many pages of them with different sizes. For microcontrollers, especially ones with USB, you'll want 12 or 24 MHz (USB peripherals tend to run on 12MHz or some multiple). Other chips often need 8MHz, 16MHz, 20MHz, 24 MHz or 32MHz. Then, sometimes you get unusual frequency requirements - like for RFID/NFC that uses 13.56 MHz RF frequencies, you'll need 27.12 MHz crystal (it's 2x the RF frequency, not surprisingly!) So this crystal oscillator kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/n5pvt3f9) is quite handy with 5 pieces of each value. Each crystal cut tape strip is in a pocket, looks like a holder for business cards or maybe baseball cards. The pocket is clear, so behind it is the identification information - what the part number is, the frequency, stability, tolerance, load capacitance, ESR, temperature and size. There's also a short URL and QR code for the datasheet from Raltron (big ups to them for getting their own URL shortener rather than leaning on a third party). Of course when you're ready to purchase for production, each part is stocked on Digi-Key as well (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raltron/crystal-resonators-engineering-design-kit) I love this kit for having so many values and options and sizes. Every workshop and lab should have one, so whenever you're designing a new chip, you can verify the crystal size and specifications immediately.
