Desk of Ladyada - Adafruit Breakout Board Styling
We just posted about a clip from a new movie out this month called "The Suicide Squad" which, for like a tenth of a second, has an Adafruit breakout board visible as part of an explosive prop. What's funny is how when we streamed this I noticed the board immediately. What makes an Adafruit board so adafruity? We'll cover our style and why we do it that way. The Great Search - TPS73101 Ultra-Low Dropout Adjustable Regulator Alternative https://www.digikey.com/short/28j2b28d We just got an update notice of a crowdfunding campaign that is struggling with how to find an alternative for their specified regulator, the TI TPS73101. Join Scott as he answers questions and fixes more bugs for 7.0.0. Other than a bunch of print statements. 24:57 how about that steroids game? 29:15 Actually that prompts a question--are you a developer that needs new challenges constantly? Does that drive the new projects, like the balance board? 37:38 What was the biggest change in 7.0.0? 44:08 speaking of status LED. I noticed the PyPortal, MatrixPortal, and esp32spi_wifimanager have a neopixel status LED for wifi. Curious why the wifi shared-bindings library doesn't do status led. 55:56 This is always interesting to hear a dev explain... What do you typically look for when doing a PR review … 1:01:53 is there any performance to be gained from having many instructions on one line opposed to spreading things out vertically, which most seem to do? 1:05:41 I worked a place that had a really in depth review process and you could spend the time to understand it not only to review the code but so everyone was familiar with the whole system. 1:11:06 oh circuitpython is compiled and not just interpreted ? 1:13:56 Where do hardware drivers (written in C) fit in (like keymap) 1:16:36 Made sense... Thanks. Is it possible to add your own C code drivers? 1:25:55 How do the core devs for circuit python divide up the work/of knowledge base of the core. How do you dive in and learn more/refer to someone else when it's not a problem you're familiar/experienced with, etc? 1:30:53 Other than the saleae, what tools do you use to help during this? 1:54:51 Any recommend arduino compatible RISC-V MCU board? 2:02:25 wrap-up ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI – MAX22530 Self-Powered 4CH Isolated 12-bit ADC MAXSafe™
This week's EYE ON NPI is a great new tool in your data-acquisition toolkit, the new MAX22530 family of isolated ADCs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/maxim-integrated/max22530-self-powered-4ch-isolated-12bit-adc-maxsafe) Maxim’s MAX22530 self-powered isolated analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are galvanically isolated, 4-channel, multiplexed, 12-bit ADCs in the MAXSafe family product line. An integrated, isolated DC/DC converter powers all field-side circuitry, enabling field-side diagnostics even when no input signal is present. It's pretty common to have a built in multiplexed ADC in microcontrollers these days - to the extent that usually folks only wire up an external ADC when there's some particular capability they need - high accuracy, wide range, programmable-gain, etc. This ADC has a lot of great specs going for it - 4 channel so you can monitor a few different points or take some differential measurements if needed, 12-bit is a nice balance that gives good precision (4096 points, which on a 5V measurement scale is about 1.2mV, and 20 kSPS over SPI for easy integration and up to 10KHz signal bandwidth. Most importantly, it's got full 5kVRMS isolation between the measurement side and the ADC/logic side (the ADC is on the isolated side). And not only is the digital side isolated but you also get a isolated DC/DC which powers the ADC half - it's only up to 5V and it's only 10mA or so, so it's not for power, just for reference. Still, that means you can tie the 'field' half whatever ground you like and take your measurements without worrying about connecting the power supplies together. There's also some nice extras for higher-reliability practices. Most ADCs are simple clock-in-data-out devices, but this one has error checks for common mistakes that can occur when doing data capture in electrically-noisy environments: Diagnostic and Fault Reporting Features: The MAX22530–MAX22532 continuously monitor multiple possible fault conditions, and a hardware alert is provided through the open drain pin, which asserts low when an enabled fault is detected. The possible faults are: ADC functionality error, SPI framing error, CRC errors from SPI communications, and loss of internal isolated data stream. This makes the MAX22530 (https://www.digikey.com/short/1q7zpfrr) a super-easy-and-reliable to use ADC for any data acquisition when you are monitoring power systems that may have non-earth-ground references, high side voltage measurements that are out-of-range for a regular ADC's common modes, or when there's a lot of digital noise that you want to make sure doesn't get coupled in. We love these simple and effective parts - they do one thing well, and don't need special treatment to get the job done. And best of all, the MAX22530 (https://www.digikey.com/short/1q7zpfrr) is in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. There's an eval board we picked up as well, (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/maxim-integrated/MAX22530EVKIT-/14115472) which comes with an FT2232 USB-to-SPI interface and Windows software for quick testing to verify it will function in the environment you're working in. Book today and you can be taking fully-isolated ADC measurements by tomorrow morning! See on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/1q7zpfrr

EYE on NPI – Digilent Analog Discovery Pro 3000 Series
This week's EYE ON NPI is ready to be tested - it's a super powerful piece of test equipment from Digilent - we are happy to feature the Digilent Analog Discovery Pro 3000 Series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/d/digilent/analog-discovery-pro-3000-series). The Analog Discovery Pro 3000 (which we will shorten to ADP3000) is a huge upgrade from the EYE ON NPI we had last year with Digilent's Digital Discovery pod (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/09/03/eye-on-npi-digilent-digital-discovery-eyeonnpi-digikey-digikey-digilentinc-adafruit/). That product was a small digital logic analyzer, great for doing firmware debugging with up to 32 channels of 200 MS/s data capture and lots of built-in bus decoding. To match with the Digital Discovery, Digilent also came out with the Analog Discovery 2 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4652) with two analog input channels of 14-bit, 100MS/s, 30MHz ADC and 16-channel logic analyzer. The Analog Discovery 2 is a great student/maker/beginner mixed-signal tool, and compact enough that you can fit it into your laptop bag for analysis anywhere. But if you want something that is comparable to a 'real' scope, you'll find that you'll want something that can take real scope probes and BNC output for those high speed signal generations. That's why there's now the ADP3000 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/d/digilent/analog-discovery-pro-3000-series) - the 3000 means its 1500x 'more extra' than the Analog Discovery 2? Which gives benchtop-ruggedness to a digital USB scope. The ADP3000 series is a 'little bit of everything': Two or four analog inputs with 100MS/s sample rate, 50 MHz bandwidth, 14-bit, +-25V input 16-channel logic analyzer and waveform pattern generator, 1.8 to 5V input, 125 MS/s sample rate Two analog waveform outputs, +-5V, 14-bit, 15MHz bandwidth Now, to be completely fair - this isn't going to replace a benchtop scope. Even my trusty old Tek TDS2014 (https://www.tek.com/oscilloscope/tds2000-digital-storage-oscilloscope), bought 15 years ago, has 1 GS/s and 100 MHz sample rate. And, personally, I still really like twiddling physical knobs when debugging a circuit. So we think that while it could be used as a benchtop toolkit, the ADP3000 isn't designed for that. Instead where we think this tool would really shine is automation or test engineering, where components or setups need to be analyzed or as part of a integration test. That's because Digilent is a wholly-owned subsidiary of National Instruments (https://www.ni.com) who make LabVIEW (https://www.ni.com/en-us/shop/labview.html) an extremely-popular lab/data capture/analysis program. So you know that there's going to be excellent integration, with the Digilent tools getting "First Class" support in LabVIEW. Having seen physicists/biologists/mech e's struggle with how to automate their experiments, this tool would work very nicely in a graduate or company lab. One feature that really stands out for the ADP3000 is that, yes, you can plug it into a computer via USB like you'd expect to capture data on a host PCB, but you can also log in directly into the scope in "Linux Mode". (https://reference.digilentinc.com/test-and-measurement/analog-discovery-pro-3x50/linux-mode) Not surprisingly, this scope runs embedded Linux, that's how it can do stuff like have USB host and Ethernet. But even with Ethernet, there's always the risk of bandwidth or dropped packets. What if you want to get some large data capture going, where you don't want to be restricted by USB? Or if you wanted to connect some additional hardware? We like that Digilent opened up this capability - most test equipment companies would not be excited to let the user log into the device itself and mess around! For scientists and automation and test engineers, this is a very promising tool - and you can pick up one from Digi-Key for immediate shipment right now! There are four 'versions' of this product (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANogCcYADAMwDsIAuoQA4AuUECAC%2BYoA): you can get 2 or 4 analog input and with or without probes. For many uses, ADP3250 2-input version without probes will do a fine job (https://www.digikey.com/short/vmvw4mv3) but check out the other options before checking out. Order today and you can be automating your data acquisition by tomorrow. See on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/vmvw4mv3 See Digilent's video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lMlnb6_Kdw
