Yay our IS31FL3741 PCB is finally fabbed - we made some with two different LEDs to compare. Thankfully our yield was 100% for the 4 panels we manufactured. Next up we're going to test out and bring up our LED glasses design which is basically a mechanically 'deconstructed' version of the same board. Most annoying part? Doing the LED mapping! We actually found its easier to do that in CircuitPython first since we need to do very fast iteration. Special Request! When you start putting a ton of RGB LEDs on a board, the price of 'smart' pixel LEDs like NeoPixels & DotStars starts to add up. That's why we fancy this IS31FL3741 breakout, which has 117 RGB common-anode LEDs, each one controlled with 8-bit-per-channel PWM. This week's EYE ON NPI is moving in the right direction - it's U-Blox's XPLR-AOA Direction Finding and Indoor Positioning Explorer Kit! This NPI tries to solve a well-trod but still not-fully-solved technical challenge of how to perform 3D tracking of low cost/low power 'tags' indoors. Ironically, object tracking is something that humans and animals do very well - we can even track things that have hidden themselves from view! But for robotics, this is an incredibly hard problem. Let's talk about some of the ways that we can do object tracking now, to explain why something that sounds so simple has been a challenge for decades. The way robotics do object tracking now is how the most simplistic organic vision systems work: by looking for a contrasting color or shape. This works best if something is vividly colored - like an Aibo robotic dog tracking a round pink ball (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AIBO_ERS-7_following_pink_ball_held_by_child.jpg#filelinks). Works great if the thing you're trying to track happens to be round and pink, which is not many things on this planet. Also, doesn't work particularly well if the shape is hidden or obscured. The next step up from basic shape tracking is machine learning vision systems that try to recognize objects by using layers of matrix calculations - what we would normally call OpenCV (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCV) or TensorFlow (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Object_detection#/media/File:Detected-with-YOLO--Schreibtisch-mit-Objekten.jpg). This is a little more flexible, but still requires good lighting, unobscured vision, and recognizable shapes. If you don't want to use a camera, and you happen to be outside, you can use GNSS/GPS. A board with a GPS module and a radio transceiver can pretty easily determine location and then relay it back to a central station. GNSS gives you up to 10 meters This is great for cars, people, boats - all sorts of large objects. But that 10 meter precisions makes it tough for smaller items and of course, GNSS does not work indoors. (If you do want better precision, you can get it using RTK - check out our EYE ON NPI from last year https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/06/08/eye-on-npi-u-blox-c099-f9p-application-board-for-zed-f9p-gnss-rtk-module-eyeonnpi-adafruit-digikey-digikey-ublox/) Traditionally, when working indoors to do tracking, folks have relied on a few different technologies. In particular RSSI tracking is quite popular because its so cheap. Basically, radio signal strength falls geometrically with distance from antenna to antenna. Folks can also use time-of-flight technology, which has slowly been making it to WiFi modules (and may also make it into BTLE at some point - we'll do EYE ON NPI on that technology when it filters into the market!) As of Bluetooth 5.1, there's a new Direction Finding capability built into the wireless specification. Bluetooth direction finding makes it possible to determine the direction that radio signals travel from a mobile tag to one or several fixed anchor points. Using angle-of-arrival (AoA) technology, anchor points comprising an antenna array that is connected to a Bluetooth receiver can detect the direction, or angle, to the mobile tag, which transmits a Bluetooth signal. When a constellation of such multi-antenna anchors is deployed, AoA technology can be used to triangulate the precise location of a mobile device or tag. (https://www.u-blox.com/en/press-releases/u-blox-presents-bluetooth-aoa-explorer-kits-high-precision-indoor-positioning) Note that this is not distance measurements, it's angular measurements. But, of course - if you have a few fixed antenna station locations its easy to convert a set of angles into a precise location! The angle calculations seem to give better accuracy than plain RSSI - 1 to 2 meters - and can be used for more than just location sensing. For example, in this demo from U-Blox, a camera can follow a tag just with angular data since we don't care how far away the target is, just that it is in frame (https://www.u-blox.com/en/blogs/tech/how-we-built-our-bluetooth-direction-finding-demo) Direction Finding is included in any U-Blox/Nordic module that supports BLE 5.1, but to make it easy we recommend picking up a XPLR-AOA Direction Finding and Indoor Positioning Explorer Kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/q3dpn32p) that has the antenna configuration needed and laid out. It's a lot easier and faster than routing your own boards - the 'tags' are any BLE module and do not need special design considerations. Liz (BlizCityDIY) wanted a better way to type and send emojis, so she came up with a Circuit Python project that uses the NeoKey 1×4 QT and QT Py RP2040. The code is well documented and the guide features a code walkthrough. Since it’s CircuitPython, it’s super easy to adapt and customize to work with your hardware set up. We just posted about a clip from a new movie out this month called "The Suicide Squad" which, for like a tenth of a second, has an Adafruit breakout board visible as part of an explosive prop. This week's EYE ON NPI is a great new tool in your data-acquisition toolkit, the new MAX22530 family of isolated ADCs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/maxim-integrated/max22530-self-powered-4ch-isolated-12bit-adc-maxsafe) Maxim’s MAX22530 self-powered isolated analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are galvanically isolated, 4-channel, multiplexed, 12-bit ADCs in the MAXSafe family product line. An integrated, isolated DC/DC converter powers all field-side circuitry, enabling field-side diagnostics even when no input signal is present. It's pretty common to have a built in multiplexed ADC in microcontrollers these days - to the extent that usually folks only wire up an external ADC when there's some particular capability they need - high accuracy, wide range, programmable-gain, etc. This ADC has a lot of great specs going for it - 4 channel so you can monitor a few different points or take some differential measurements if needed, 12-bit is a nice balance that gives good precision (4096 points, which on a 5V measurement scale is about 1.2mV, and 20 kSPS over SPI for easy integration and up to 10KHz signal bandwidth. Most importantly, it's got full 5kVRMS isolation between the measurement side and the ADC/logic side (the ADC is on the isolated side). And not only is the digital side isolated but you also get a isolated DC/DC which powers the ADC half - it's only up to 5V and it's only 10mA or so, so it's not for power, just for reference. Still, that means you can tie the 'field' half whatever ground you like and take your measurements without worrying about connecting the power supplies together. There's also some nice extras for higher-reliability practices. Most ADCs are simple clock-in-data-out devices, but this one has error checks for common mistakes that can occur when doing data capture in electrically-noisy environments: Diagnostic and Fault Reporting Features: The MAX22530–MAX22532 continuously monitor multiple possible fault conditions, and a hardware alert is provided through the open drain pin, which asserts low when an enabled fault is detected. The possible faults are: ADC functionality error, SPI framing error, CRC errors from SPI communications, and loss of internal isolated data stream. This makes the MAX22530 (https://www.digikey.com/short/1q7zpfrr) a super-easy-and-reliable to use ADC for any data acquisition when you are monitoring power systems that may have non-earth-ground references, high side voltage measurements that are out-of-range for a regular ADC's common modes, or when there's a lot of digital noise that you want to make sure doesn't get coupled in. We love these simple and effective parts - they do one thing well, and don't need special treatment to get the job done. We finally got our ESP32-S2 mini Modules in, that means we can make the ESP32-S2 Feather. Buuuuut, now two other parts are shortaged. Thankfully, we haven't ordered PCBs yet, so we're gonna do some quick rearrangement to let us ship the board with a working battery monitor and buy us some time.
